Because we are also factoring in the academic scores there will not be a UKCAT score (or decile) that correlates with receiving an offer. We provide some guidance in the GCSE section but this is limited by the fact that we are using UKCAT for the first time.

The band score for the Situational Judgement Test (SJT) component of UKCAT will be used at the interview stage (see: Outcome of Interview)

Dundee Medical School is supportive of the introduction of situational judgement tests within the UKCAT. We are aware that a number of evaluations are currently underway which we hope will inform our use of the SJT scores within the 2014-2015 admissions cycle. As the findings will not be available in the immediate future and because the attributes tested by the SJT broadly parallel elements of our multiple mini interview process we will NOT be using this score to select for interview. If the evidence suggests it is appropriate, we shall include the SJT score as an element of our interview process. If not, we shall not use it until further information on reliability and validity is available. More information on the UKCAT tests can be found at www.ukcat.ac.uk

A100 Medicine Use of UKCAT to identify those for interview For the A100 programme Newcastle and Durham use the same UKCAT thresholds to identify applicants for interview. This threshold may differ in each admission cycle as it is dependent on the scores achieved by those applicants who apply to our Medical School in the current cycle. UKCAT All applicants will be required to complete the UKCAT. The definition of ‘current UKCAT Score’; UKCAT scores can only be used to support an application made in the year in which it is achieved (e.g. UKCAT sat between July – October 2015 can only be used to support an application through UCAS by the UCAS closing date of 15 October 2015). More information is available at www.ukcat.ac.uk The UKCAT scores will be used to identify those we wish to interview. The UKCAT threshold may differ in each admissions cycle as it is dependent on the scores achieved by those applicants who apply to our Medical School in the current cycle. A100 Medicine We do not set a minimum cut-off score for the UKCAT, but consider the component scores within the academic screening processes. Whilst a high UKCAT score may be advantageous, a low score in an otherwise strong application will not automatically disqualify an applicant from consideration. From our experience, it is unusual for an applicant with a UKCAT score of less than 2400 to be invited to interview.

We have not set a cut-off score for the UKCAT test. We will consider scores from the test within the academic screening processes in the School. Whilst a high UKCAT score could be advantageous a low score will not automatically disqualify a candidate from consideration. If the rest of the application is strong then the applicant could still be short-listed for interview with a lower UKCAT test score.

A100 Medicine The Selection Committee uses your UKCAT score to make a more informed decision about your application. Once all the scores are received we rank them, divide the groups into octiles and allocate a score. The points are then added to your total score to contribute towards your final ranking. Due to the introduction of the Situational Judgement section of the test, we will be assessing this as part of our non-academic requirements and not alongside your overall UKCAT score. We will consider all scores and no applicant will be excluded from selection based on the score achieved in their UKCAT test (although applicants will be excluded if they have failed to take the test and not gained an exemption). The score an applicant achieved may be looked at again when final decisions are being made and there is a number of applicants with the same ranked score and limited places left to offer.

When considering those students which will be shortlisted for interview the selectors consider the following; GCSE (or equivalent performance), predicted or achieved A-level grades (or equivalent), the personal statement, the reference and the score in the UKCAT. All of these contribute to the shortlisting of candidates, but examination performance and the UKCAT score are perhaps the most important. These are highlighted as they provide us with the fairest and most consistent method of comparing applicants. The university does not have a threshold UKCAT score in any particular year, but in order to provide candidates with a method of assessing their likely competitiveness we provide some guideline scores which are indicative of the competitive score required in the past years. Please note that some students with scores above this may not have been interviewed and indeed some with scores below this may have been interviewed, as this is a guideline. The guideline scores for the past four cycles were as follows: 2015 entry 630 2014 entry 735 2013 entry 695 2012 entry 685 The value varies due to three key factors; the number of applicants per place varies slightly each year, the average quality of the applicant field varies slightly each year and finally the average performance in the UKCAT varies slightly each year. Applicants should therefore think very carefully before placing too much emphasis on the precise UKCAT score in any one year. It may be useful to compare this information with the actual UKCAT data at http://www.ukcat.ac.uk/our-research/downloads/

A100 Medicine In considering your application, we will calculate a score for your academic ability, up to a maximum of 34 points, based on your UCAS form. We will take into account your GCSE grades and any confirmed (not predicted) AS Level or A Level results. We will also consider predicted or confirmed IBacc results. This score will be combined with a score based on your UKCAT results, again up to 34 points, giving a maximum possible score of 68 points. Your combined score for your academic achievement and UKCAT will determine whether you are invited for interview. In order to distinguish between 'borderline' applicants, we may also take into account your 'personal qualities' based on your personal statement and reference. Because applications are ranked, there is no set score which guarantees an interview. The threshold will depend on the quality and quantity of applications we receive. We reserve the right to change our scoring systems at any time in order to rank applicants appropriately. Your score for the UKCAT (or UKCATSEN) will be obtained by simply dividing the total score you achieved in the test by 100, as follows:

If you scored 3,400 or above, you will score 34 points

If you scored 3,350 or above, you will score 33.5 points.

If you scored 3,300 or above, you will score 33 points ...and so on. The Situational Judgement Test (SJT) may be used as a virtual multiple mini-interview station, should you reach that stage of the process.

Aptitude Test Requirements All applicants are required to sit the UKCAT before their application to study Dentistry. The UKCAT is a timed computer-based aptitude test. It is split into the following sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Decision Analysis, Abstract Reasoning and Situational Judgement Test. The test is taken at various test centres in most countries in the world. Each candidate is scored on their performance in the test. The actual raw score is not particularly important but each candidate is also given a percentile score which shows how they performed in relation to other candidates. It is this percentile score that is examined as part of the assessment of the UCAS application. Manchester Dental School does not operate a cut-off score for UKCAT results. It is this percentile score that is examined as part of the assessment of the UCAS application. Manchester Dental School does not operate a cut-off score for UKCAT results. It is merely one element of the assessment of the application. Therefore, just because you have a low UKCAT percentile score does not mean you would be automatically rejected. Similarly just because you have a high UKCAT percentile score does not mean you will be successful either. How your application is considered The selection process takes place in three stages:

Selection of those candidates who meet the basic academic requirements

More detailed assessment of candidates' UCAS form in which the personal statement and school/college reference are carefully considered. The UKCAT score is also considered at this stage. Manchester does not have a cut-off score for the UKCAT however, we will be ranking candidates according to the results of the Situational Judgement Tests as part of the UKCAT assessment.

Candidates whose applications are highly rated will be invited for interview

Use of UKCAT to identify those for interview In relation to the standard 5-year programme (A100) and the 4 year programme (A101), applications fulfilling the academic thresholds will then be assessed on their UKCAT scores. The UKCAT threshold may vary depending upon the competition to each programme or the route of entry. For the A100 programme Newcastle and Durham use the same UKCAT thresholds to identify applicants for interview. A100 Medicine For school-leavers/gap year students, you must achieve at least 2400 overall in the UKCAT.

We are not able to give you advice on the minimum score we require, since it varies from year to year; however, it is unlikely that you would be offered an interview if you obtained a TOTAL UKCAT score below 2400; although there is no guarantee you will be offered an interview if you score above this.

Graduates who apply for the 5 year programme will be assessed to ensure they meet our minimum academic criteria. Applicants who meet these criteria will then be ranked against the other graduate applicants applying in that year according to their overall UKCAT score to determine which applicants to short-list for interview.

A100 Medicine We have a limited number of interview places (around 400). To be called to interview applicants must have a strong reference and relevant, medically related work experience (see Qualities and Experience). Following assessment of personal statement and reference, suitable applicants will be ranked for interview on the basis of their academic performance and their UKCAT global score. Those ranked in the top 400 or so will be given an interview. Decisions to make offers will be based on the interview score and the global UKCAT score. The UKCAT test can vary each year. We cannot judge what the UKCAT scores for our applicants will be for 2016 entry. In November 2015 we will be given the results of those who have applied to St Andrews and at that time the overall average for all who sat the test in 2015 will be published. Only once we have assessed our applications will we know what the likely UKCAT scores will be for those to be called for interview. This may well be quite a long time into the admissions cycle. We are not able to advise a likely UKCAT score for interview at this stage.

For example, a downward shift in overall UKCAT score could result in a lower UKCAT score needed to achieve a place at Selection Centre, compared to previous years. Please bear this in mind when making your decision to apply. The lowest UKCAT score for an applicant with an undergraduate degree who was invited to selection centre was 2,800 for 2015 entry; 2,940 for 2014 entry and 2,810 for 2013.
