Further Research Needed

Svedberg Elina, Strömbäck Ulrica and Engström Åsa Women's experiences of unplanned pre-hospital births: A pilot study [Journal] // International Emergency Nursing. - [s.l.] : Elsevier Ltd, 2020. Click here to access abstract, email [email protected] to request fulltext

CONCLUSION: The ambulance nurse has a central role in the care outside the hospital. The advice women suggest to ambulance nurses are remaining calm and safe no matter what the situation looks like, listening to the mother and meeting the woman's wishes. Proposals for further research are to investigate the importance of further education in childbirth care for ambulance nurses and how that affects the care of women and their family. Eaton Georgette [et al.] Contribution of paramedics in primary and urgent care: a systematic review [Journal] // The British journal of general practice : the journal of the Royal College of General Practitioners. - [s.l.] : NLM (Medline), 6 1, 2020. - 695 : Vol. 70. - pp. e421-e426. Click here to access fulltext (open access as of 29/06/2020)

CONCLUSION: Current published research identifies that the role of the paramedic working in primary and urgent care is being advocated and implemented across the UK; however, there is insufficient detail regarding the clinical contribution of paramedics in these clinical settings. More research needs to be done to determine how, why, and in what context paramedics are now working in primary and urgent care, and what their overall contribution is to the primary care workforce. CONCLUSIONS: Establishing a just feedback culture within paramedic practice may reduce a perceived isolation of clinical practice, enabling both individual development and progression of the profession. Carefully designed formal outcome feedback mechanisms should be initiated and subsequently evaluated to establish resultant benefits and costs. Charlton Karl, Limmer Matthew and Moore Hayley Intravenous versus oral paracetamol in a UK ambulance service: a case control study [Journal] // British Paramedic Journal. - [s.l.] : Class Publishing, 5 31, 2020. - 1 : Vol. 5. - pp. 1-6. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that intravenous paracetamol is more effective than oral paracetamol when managing acute pain in the out-of-hospital setting. Our findings support further investigation of the role of paracetamol in paramedic practice using more robust methods. Bell Jack and Horner Daniel BET 1: Prone positioning of awake patients with acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure [Journal] // Emergency medicine journal : EMJ. - [s.l.] : NLM (Medline), 6 1, 2020. - 6 : Vol. 37. - pp. 379-381. – Click here to access fulltext- SWASFT Athens required (register here). A short-cut review of the literature was carried out to examine the potential utility of prone positioning in awake patients with hypoxaemic respiratory failure. Four papers were identified as suitable for inclusion using the reported search strategy. The author, date and country of publication, patient group studied, study type, relevant outcomes, results and study weaknesses of the best papers are tabulated. It is concluded that there is no evidence that regular prone positioning in the awake patient with hypoxaemic respiratory failure impacts on clinically relevant outcomes. Further research is required to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of this intervention, compared with routine mobilisation strategies. Blodgett, J.M., Robertson, D.J., Ratcliffe, D. Despite limited data and a small sample size, there were differences between patients conveyed directly to ED and those who were referred into GP care. Initial evidence suggests that referring individuals to a GP may provide an appropriate and safe alternative path of care. This pilot study demonstrated a need for larger scale, methodologically rigorous study to demonstrate the benefits of alternative conveyance schemes and recommend changes to the current system of urgent and emergency care. Annals of Emergency Medicine, Volume 0, Issue 0 Click here to access fulltext- SWASFT Athens required (register here). Click here to access free abstract We found support that video is considered an enhancement by physicians overseeing a community paramedicine response, but is not associated with a statistically significant difference in transport to the ED compared with telephonic communication in this nonrandom sample. These results have implications for new models of out-of-hospital care that allow patients to be evaluated and treated in the home
