Dear Madam,

My father Nikolai Kalmen Kaplan was born in Tartu on February 16 (old calendar

February 4) 1898. The following details are what my father told me about his life in Estonia.

He was the third child, and second son of Sussman Kaplan and Rachel Movsch. The other children of the couple were elder son Joseph and daughter Mascha, and

younger son and daughter David and Anna. Anna the youngest child was born in 1901

Their mother passed away not long after. I don i know the date of Rachel Movsch-

Kaplan' s death. The three younger children were reared by their elder sister Mascha.

The language spoken at home was German.

The property of the family consisted of a shop on Alexander street and some

woodland which provided the logs they burned in the tile stoves that kept the house

warm. My father attended primary and secondary school in Tartu. Secondary education

was received in uniform (!) and through Russian. Nikolai Kalmen s school results were so high as to enable him to enter the Medical School at Tartu University, access to which was restricted by the numerus clausus. He studied médecine there, through German, and passed his final exams in mai 1922

qualifying as arsti astme.

He was recruited in the Estonian army and served as a medical officer in the Estonian war of independence.
