Book Nook – Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins This book combines counting with a funny storyline that children love!

Introducing the book: Hide a red apple in a bag and pass it around, allowing each child to reach inside, feel the object, describe what they feel and guess what it is. Unveil the apple - did anyone guess correctly?

Use apples for transition: “One little apple, round and red, fell kerplunk on Aarons head” as Aaron transitions to the next activity.

Playdough: Red playdough, twigs, small leaves and seeds. What can you create with this? Suggest an apple. Try green apples as well.

Investigating an apple: Cut an apple in half and place into two bowls. What does the inside of an apple look like? Cover one half with lemon juice and leave the other exposed to air. Predict what will happen. Leave them for an hour. How are they different?

Graphing our favourite apples: Provide different kinds of apples. Sit at the table with the children and involve them in selecting, slicing and eating the apples. What colours are they? How do they taste? Prepare a graph about the children’s favourites. If you have an apple slinky machine, you could also slinky some apples for the children.

Healthy habits start at a young age! Children who develop

healthy habits early are more likely to continue these into

adulthood.

If any of the families at your service are wanting a little bit

extra help around healthy eating, getting their kids active

or sleep behaviours there is a FREE program that may

help.

Time for Healthy Habits offers online modules, telephone

support calls or printed resources to help support families.

Visit www.timeforhealthyhabitsnsw.com/ or more

information.

We’ve also included a flyer with your parent newsletter

snippets for this term.

Festive Food and Activities! Use the Christmas period to introduce children to Festive Foods and activities. Take

advantage of children’s interests in everything festive and explore what people in other

countries eat and how they celebrate Christmas, or make your own festive creations.

Try some Reindeer Rolls, fruit or vegie Christmas trees, banana and strawberry candy

canes, or Santa’s Vegie Platter. If your service usually gives the children or families

festive treats, think of non-food related gifts.

You can even use food for Christmas craft… think snowflake, baubles or Christmas tree

potato prints!

Let us know how you plan to celebrate!

Active Advent Countdown – the 12 days of Christmas

Advent calendars are usually full of chocolate. We challenge you to work with the kids at your service to develop a “12 days of Fitmas” count down. Get the children to come up with 12 different activities or exercises they can do and use the 12 days of Christmas song to put them together… For example, On the first day of Christmas: 1 Spiderman crawl On the second day of Christmas: 2 kangaroo jumps and 1 Spiderman crawl On the third day of Christmas: 3 sumo squats, 2 kangaroo jumps and 1 Spiderman crawl On the fourth day of Christmas: 4 jumping jacks, 3 sumo squats, 2 kangaroo jumps and 1 Spiderman crawl On the fifth day of Christmas: 5 high fives, 4 jumping jacks, 3 sumo squats, 2 kangaroo jumps and 1 Spiderman crawl Encourage families to get involved in this active advent countdown! Take pictures as you go to post on social media, add to daily diaries, or put into a little book for a great Christmas keepsake for your families.

Case Study: Wollongbar Community Preschool Shop

We have a preschool shop and sell fresh produce from our garden and the gardens of our families. Popular items we sell include citrus fruit, flowers and herbs. We even sell worm juice from our worm farm, eggs and second hand books!

We’ve always had a garden linked to the learning program, however it wasn’t until a staff member had the idea to sell our produce in addition to using it for nutrition learning experiences and cooking in the preschool, that we thought what a great initiative! Children have been involved in writing the signs, interacting with customers and learning the language and roles in buying and selling items.

The profits are put back into the preschool and we involve the children in deciding on what to buy with them. Previously we have bought tools for the garden, more seedlings and food for our five quails. It’s a really nice community interaction and the children love being a part of it!

Crunch Time School Transition

This time of year is a great chance to consider integrating a Crunch Time (a vegie snack time) into your transition to school activities. This may be by having a “Crunch” opportunity in the preschool room each day, or simply encouraging children to eat their Crunch snack first.

Remember to focus on vegetables because less than 1 in 10 kids eat enough vegies each day. If children don’t bring their own, they may be able to pick some from your garden.

We have developed a snippet you can share with your families to encourage them to join in. It can be found at https://nnswlhd.health.nsw.gov.au/health-promotion/files/2019/09/Crunch-Time.png .

Kids in the Kitchen: Pizza Pops

Use basil and cherry tomatoes from your garden to create these fresh pizza pops. Encourage children to make their own.

Ingredients: (serves 10 pops) 10 cherry tomatoes 10 bocconcini balls 10 basil leaves 1 pita bread 10 paddle pop sticks Method:

1. Cut pita into 10 triangles 2. Make a small cut into

cherry tomato for paddle pop stick to go in to

3. Push paddle pop stick through pita, tomato, basil leaf and then bocconcini ball

4. Serve Vary ingredients and colours depending on what is available and child preferences. Explore the following questions: - Where bocconcini (baby mozzarella) comes from? - What other types of cheese the children have tried? - Did they like it?
