It’s Better OFF @ Easter Easter to many of us signifies a new beginning, so why not make this Easter the start of something new… The Chocolate eggs - think Fairtrade, think organic, think less packaging, and yes still just as yummy! • Did you know… nestlè have removed all non recyclable plastic

packaging from their eggs, so you can now recycle the whole lot. How much do you know about the chocolate you buy, why not have a go at this quick chocolate quiz… you’ll be surprised! http://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/quiz/easter-chocolate-quiz-ethical-chocolate Think outside the box… instead of mountains of chocolate eggs, or plastic toys, why not so something different? • Bake a cake – using Fairtrade / organic

ingredients of course – not only is this tasty, it’ll probably last longer than a chocolate egg!

• Go somewhere - Why not visit a farm? Rather than chocolate chicks go and see some real ones… (and pick up a yummy home made cake whilst you are there!)

• And for the Easter Egg hunt, swap the plastic Easter baskets for wicker baskets or re-usable material bags, and you could always use the hardboiled eggs for the sandwiches for lunch– Love food, hate waste!

The Easter Sunday lunch, why not take a trip to your local farm shop and pick up something a little different and some super fresh veggies.

This Month’s Seasonal Foods This Month’s BEST…

Summer Cycling = Summer body! Now the weather is improving and the clocks have changed why not wheel out your bike and get some exercise on the way to work? You can easily cycle 4-5 miles in around 30-40 minutes and burn around 800-1000 calorie, great for that summer body Why not plan your route here, you can also see the profile of your route and the calories you can burn… http://www.walkjogrun.net

Workshop/ Training changes Due to low uptake on the bite-size training sessions we have opted to schedule a single session, over a lunchtime with lunch provide. It’s Better OFF @ Easter Easter is fast approaching, the university is closed from Friday 18th April to Tuesday 22nd April (inclusive) These 5 days are an opportunity for the university to make big energy savings. Last Easter the university used £9,500 of electricity, that’s nearly £2k per day! – if we can reduce this by 5% that’s nearly £500 in energy along, excluding all the other additional charges we have to pay including CCL, CRC and EUETS.

Cycle to work Scheme Don’t forget the Cycle2Work scheme is still running. Why not purchase your new bike from a selection at Cogz, with monthly payments taken from your pre tax wages. Find out more online… http://www.lboro.ac.uk/sustainability/travel/cycling/cycle2work.html

What can you do? • Plan ahead! – who will be in the

department on the last day? • Give people a responsibility to switch

something off. • Highlight what can and can’t be switched

off. • Remind, remind, remind – don’t let

anyone forget. • Rewards, why not leave a sweetie or a

nice sticker on everyone desk who has switched off their PC and Monitor.

Stationery Amnesty We are having a stationery Amnesty over Easter If you are having a departmental tidy or clear out please let us know. We would love to take your unwanted stationery off your hands. We will find it a new home with students at our recycling stand in the library which was received tremendously well this term. Contact us at [email protected]

British Heart Foundation Banks We now have a number of British Heart Foundation donation banks on campus. These are mainly located in and around the halls of residence, though we are awaiting the arrival of one to go next to car park 5 for staff. However feel free to use the ones already one campus if you have a clear out over the Easter period. They are located near … • Falkner Eggington games room, • John Philips bottle bank, • Bakewell court • Car park, next to the Granby, • David Collett waste enclosure • Telford + Faraday dining hall waste enclosures • and at the bottom of Cayley on Margret Keay Road. • For more information contact us at [email protected]

E&E Week Summary

E&E Week was a huge success, 7 teams took part in the ‘Trashion show’ and really enjoyed it; it was a great start to the week which enticed people down for

the other events such as Eco-action games where over 70 people attended throughout

the day. The famous E&E Treasure Hunt, there were 10

environmental themed locations on campus, 12 teams, 60 people and lots of prizes were won.

111 people headed down to JCs for the pub quiz with a Fairtrade and environment twist coming because of E&E

Week. FND&E saw halls doing blackouts, Fairtrade punch parties

and recycling themed socials. We had neatly 300 photos with people and the Fairtrade

bananas. And Finally Sunday was the CANnes film festival where those that brought 10 empty cans down to the FLIX cinema gained

free entry. Unfortunately we think the nice weather and the

weekend put people off, but all in all it was a very positive week.
