“ This project is an opportunity to explore a city space and to experiment with one. That is, you will engage in the simultaneity of critique and creation. The aim of the project is to define, draw and then continually reconfigure boundaries between textual spaces, representations of space, imagined spaces, senses and concrete physical environments. It is intended that you move fluidly between words and things, and in the process begin to appreciate the rich opportunities of the city. “

“You are in the midst of constructed spaces, everyday spaces engaged in extraordinary ways, and are concerned with the

exploration of experiential qualities of both the existing and the imagined. You are asked to explore the passions of exterior city spaces: the intimate connections that exist between its

concrete material reality and its conceptual construction. This is city sense.”

Description of video:

A speculation beyond what is physically in your realm of sight.

Music: ‘Hey there Delilah’ on Xylophone by ElCabritoFresco (youtube user)

ReflectionOn a whole, this video exercise was successful in terms of

engaging with the exterior spaces. As a group, we struggled to come up with a concept to convey such an ambiguous space.

In the end, we agreed on creating a photo montage which represents ambiguity with some reference to the space as ‘a speculation beyond what is physically in your realm of sight’.

If we had more time in constructing this video, we would have incorporated a more obvious reference to the Melbourne

cityscape as oppose to the Sydney cityscape as captured in this video.

“You are to construct an experimental architecture that can occupy the body. You

are not producing an architectural prosthetic but an architectural occupation.”

Body Occupation: The Ear CanalFor this experimentation, I have focused on the ear canal as I can relate to it personally with my hearing loss. The ear canal plays a strong role in the way sound is transmitted

from external force through the ear canal to be processed. I related this an architectural

space of circulation - tunnel like as shown in sketch 01.

In sketch 02, I have taken this architectural occupation further by playing with the idea

of a bridge, a connection , a stepping stone - ultimately a dynamic journey.

Final experimentation model

“The ear tends to be lazy, craves the familiar and is shocked by the unexpected” W.H Auden

Final Experimentation Model & ReflectionThis final model represents the sketch 02

as above. The model was made out of tiny paddlepop sticks. The platform/staircase represents the architectural occupation in the scale of an ear canal. The model

however, did not do the sketch justice as it was not as provacative and dynamic as the

sketch portrays.

If I had the opportunity to revisit this experimentation, I would have been more experimental in terms of the shape of the

model and be more outrageous as oppose to a simple /elegant shape.

Site Analysis: “interrogated, analysed, annotated”

Precededent Studies & Reflection- drawings courtesy of Adeline Wang

This precedent study of Carriage Works in Sydney was crucial in my design of theatre

of anatomy in terms of the theatre’s section. The raked seating of Carriage Works is similar if not the same as my proposed

theatre of anatomy.

By using this as a precedent, I was sure that the sightlines would work in my theatre of

anatomy.

The first part of this project was important in setting up the foundations for the theatre of anatomy. Through close studies

of precedents, analysis of Prague and understanding the terminology of the anatomy allowed me to understand the brief and the breadth of the project that is required in this semester.

Ultimately the site analysis of Prague and its context

formulated my concept for my theatre of anatomy, linking it to the idea of the ‘heart’ in terms of location and the need to

control the emotional response to live dissections.

Fucking Big Idea- educational purposes? spectacle? to engage with all type of audiences including students, scholars and the general public

- dynamic spaces ; a “psychological experience”

- notion of a journey where the destination is the dissection

- filtering of spaces, dynamic spaces to prepare audience

- importance of circulation

- entrance --> museum/exhibition --> dissection/theatre

Concepts - theatre of anatomy, spaces that expose/hide various function to

slowly desensitize audience’s expectations of the disection

- “beauty in the decay” - using the existing shell of the church as a metaphor for the human skin

- metaphor of the heart; the intricacies of the heart as a central space

- associations of emotions; the capability of feeling love, hate, pain etc.

experimenting with the form and playing with the idea of the heart shape idea, to avoid an arbitary form.

the form had to be something sensible and architecturally pleasing and that it was fitting with the

whole concept of the heart

feedback good concept to be developed in regard to the

feeling intended and to investigate all the plains of the volume and to elaborate the concept of the

heart.

The important aspect of the schematic design was the organic form. This could not be achieved through drawings, but

through actual model making. Through experimentation of the form through model making, I began to understand the

potential of what the spaces of the theatre anatomy could be.

However in the process of experimentation, I steered away from the overall concept and what my intentions are and was

too focused on experimentation as oppose to designing something that does not compromise the concept.

That was the direction for the final submission, to elaborate and refine the concept and to allow the concept to create the

form and experience of the theatre of anatomy.

What is the connection to the emotions?

What is the expression involved?

Are seats held in a particular way?

What is the relationship with the earth?

Going back to the concept? Creating a lively space where the heart pumps out blood

In the short amount of time that was allowed to come up with a design, I am quite happy and satisfied with the final outcome.

In the past 3 years, I have found this project to be quite chal-lenging conceptually and has pushed my creative and design

thinking to its limit. I am proud of my model and the organic form which I have not explored in previous projects.

However like any other university projects, if there were more time given, I would have love to push myself further and to create a stronger concept . I would have liked to refine my

design strategies and to integrate architectural technologies even further.

In saything that, I am proud of this project and cannot wait to see what the future holds.
