PONDERINGS OF A PAROCHIAL ADMINISTRATOR

My Dear Parishioners:

This week I will answer a ques on I was asked about Fish on Fridays.

Dear Fr. - As I understand it, ea ng fish on Friday was originally used to help out the folks in that indus-try but it later was used to show a sign of penance (not ea ng meat). So folks were not ea ng meat to help the fishing industry but rather to show some sign or appearance of penance.

Ah, yes, the old fish-monger story. An oldie but a goodie! This story is a complete falsehood having no basis in fact. The closest fact you can get to this is that in 1541 (8 years a er he married Ann Boleyn and broke with Rome) King Henry VIII proclaimed that eggs, cheese, and milk could all now be included in fast-day diets; total Lenten abs nence was abandoned, and the number of holy days was reduced by three-quarters. During the reign of the Catholic queen Mary, a middle ground was reached which al-lowed the ea ng of fish on days of abs nence and fas ng. So, as we can see, the prac ce of ea ng fish on days of abs nence came from a temporal monarch not a Pope, a protestant, not a Catholic and was a relaxa on, not an imposi on, of a law. Let me explain further.

From the earliest of mes, fas ng was considered a sacrifice for God and a way of penance for man. We find fas ng throughout the Old testament (Levi cus 16:29; Judges 20:26; Judith 6:20; Joel 1:14 and 2:15; Jeremiah 52:6, 52:12 and 41:2; 2 Kings 25:1; just to name a few). Further, we find that the early Chris ans prac ced fas ng on Fridays in commemora on of the Crucifixion of Christ (look at Acts as well as 1 and 2 Corinthians).

What about abs nence from meat? We must realize that the ea ng of red meat on a regular basis is a recent innova on (Last 100-150 years). Prior to that, the common man simply did not have the means to consume red meat regularly. This is why in the bible it is such a big deal on feasts to “kill the fa ed calf”. Therefore, it would be inappropriate to eat something reserved for feasts and rich people on days set aside for fas ng. It kind of negates the idea of penance. This is addressed directly on point by St. Thomas in the Summa (ST II-II, Q. 147, ad 8).

In addi on, the Church has never required one to eat fish on Friday, it says not to eat meat. Peanut bu er or all vegetables is just fine. If this were enacted to save the fish industry the Church would have required the ea ng of fish rather than the prohibi on against meat.

In the 1966 the Apostolic Cons tu on of Pope Paul VI, Paenitemini, stated that abs nence is required throughout the year on all Fridays, though the Bishops' Conferences in some areas allow other peniten-

al acts (e.g., prayer, abs nence from another food, giving up an unhealthy or unnecessary habit, mor -fica on, etc.). This is the case for the USCCB. They allow the subs tu on of another penance during the year except for Lent. This requirement was codified in the 1983 Code of Canon Law. (see Canons 1250-1253; Fas ng - See also CCC 2043, 1434, 1438, 2043, ).

Remember, if you have any ques ons about our faith, history or the Church, please feel free to send your ques ons to me at [email protected].

Your servant in Christ, Fr. John

Note from Bishop Sheridan Dear Parishoners, Recently I received a request for clarifica on from one of our priests regarding the Masonic sect. The Code of Canon Law of 1917 forbade Catholics from having membership in the Masons. The current Code of 1983, in speaking of organiza ons that are opposed to the Catholic faith, does not men on the Masons, as such. However, following the promulga on of the 1983 Code, then-Cardinal Ratzinger, Prefect of the Congrega on for the Doc-trine of the Faith, issued a statement that said that the Church’s nega-

ve judgment on Masonry remains unchanged because the Masonic principles are irreconcilable with the Church’s teaching. Furthermore, Catholics who join the Masons are in the state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion.

Every individual who has reasonable cause to know or suspect child abuse or neglect should report it to local law enforcement or to the Colorado Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 1-844-CO-4-KIDS (1-844-264-5437). Instances involving clergy, or parish/school employees or volunteers must also be reported to the Diocesan Office of Child and Youth Protec on at 719-636-2345, or in emergency situa on, to the Diocesan Repor ng Hot-line at 719-866-6505.
