Type of music video

The type of music that Katy Perry song “Thinking of you” is a narrative(illustrative) music video. This is shown by the fact that the throughout the music video, the lyrics that are said are evident in the song, are illustrated; in the music video. An example of this can be seen when Katy Perry sings “ I can taste your lips when you kiss me” at this moment we then see Katy Perry kissing a man. More evidence that shows that the music video is a narrative (illustrative) music video, is the fact that the music video itself is a flash back of Katy Perry reminiscing on past times. This is shown when she looks out the window and it shows her and her dead husband.

Throughout the duration of the music video there is a strong relation evident between the music and the visuals in the music video. This is seen by the transition of shots and the way in which it matches both the tempo of the music. Whenever the tempo of the music changes so does the rate in which there are cuts and transition in shots. The effect that this has on the viewer of the music video is that it makes the music video feel emotive in a negative way. |It also makes the action that is taking place in the music video more realistic and relatable.

The reason why these shots are quiet frequently evident in the music video is because the record wants to promote the artist her target audience. To a certain degree you could say that it is mainly used for star marketing. Another why this is quiet frequently evident in the music video is because the record label want to promote the brand of the artist also to her target audience.

The notion of looking in the music video is shown via the use of vicarious shots. An example of this shot being used in the music video is when Katy Perry and the man are about to share an interment moment. You could say that by having this shot at this particular time when she is looking attractive, is another form if promoting as a brand and an artist to her male target audience. Anther effect of having the notion of looking evident in the music video has is that it makes the action that is taking place in the music video seem more realistic.

The video has intertextual references to the movie “Dear John” In the same way that the Katy Perry music video is about soldier and the relationship you can have with one, the move “Dear John” is about the relationship you can have with a solider and the barriers and obstacles that can come with it.
