The beginning of school this year brought a whole lot more than the traditional “back to school”. Cavelero seemed to have gone from a school no one was thrilled over, to a place that we were excited to go. And now that we are back, it seems like this year is a lot better than the one we had last year. School spirit is on the rise, and the students seem happier about coming to school. Now that the school seems more exciting, kids want to get involved more. And the news-paper is no exception. It’s a new year, and we want to transform just as much as the school did. Superhero Day By Karissa Jones

The students at Cavelero really know how to dress up! On Friday, October 17th, Cavelero held Superhero Day, a spirit day in which students were given the op-portunity to come to school dressed as their favorite superheroes. There were all kinds of heroes, from Mermaidman to Super Penguin, and they all looked amazing. According to Super Penguin (Reeno Booth) it was “outrageously awesome, although it got a little hot in my costume and I had to take off my hood a few times.” During lunch, they all went on the stage and told everybody which Superhero they were and the rest of the students clapped and cheered for their favorite participant.

WORLD CELEBRATING HISTORY IN THE MAKING by Sarah Ruiz

P A G E 3 V O L U M E 2 , I S S U E 2

- Jennifer Hudson is mourning the loss of her brother, her mother and her nephew. Her mother and brother were found murdered in their home and three days later the body of her nephew was found in a white SUV. It is believed the triple homicide was the result of a do-mestic argument.

IN THE NEWS: NOVEMBER

-California revoked the gay marriage right. Previously, gay couples could be-come legally married in the state of Cali-fornia, but the right was voted against following elections. Many gay citizens are furious, and some are not paying taxes saying ‘why should we have to pay taxes if our state isn’t recognizing us as first class citizens. Why should our right to be happy be taken away?’

Whether you know the ins and outs of politics or not, you know about the win of president elect Barack Obama. Around the world people are celebrating the win of the United State’s first African American presi-dent. For some, the win came as a disappointment (persons of the Repub-lican party). Republicans, Democrats, Independents and any other party, please put away your preferences for a moment. THIS IS HISTORY IN THE MAKING! All of you who are bitter over Obama’s win, you should stop for a moment to think about how lucky you are. Years ago, this would have never even been possible. We are a part of a generation that gets to see how far Civil Rights have truly come. Like Obama, or not, but he deserves to be admired. The African American community is overcome with happiness to see someone of African descent become the president. Many have been quoted saying things such as “He shows us that anything is possible.”

Obama has become an inspiration for thousands, perhaps even millions. People are the world are celebrat-ing Obama’s win. Kenya (Obama’s home town) is incredibly proud of how far he has come. London also held celebrations, and the United States was full of people celebrating at the news of his victory. If that many people are happy he won, isn’t that saying something?

As a nation there will always be disappointment over who wins the presidential election, but even the disappointed should realize how truly amazing this is. The United States has led the way for mil-lions of people, and now history is being made. To be able to be part of this history is a true gift for our gen-eration.

Southern California is burn-ing up! Three wildfires have swept the area burning more than 44,000 acres and de-stroyed 1,000 homes. Gover-nor Schwarzenegger has de-clared the four counties in a state of emergency and more than 50,000 residents have been evacuated.

Did you get a letter? By: Shayla Lerner

One day you are getting the mail and you come across a letter that says “For the parent’s of –your name-“It ends up being an opportunity to go to Australia, Fiji, and New Zealand for 22 days! You can’t believe your luck, but then you start to have questions. “Why did I get this? What did I do to deserve this? Is this a scam?” Well the truth is that it is an amazing opportunity, a once or twice in a life time thing. The organization that is responsible for it is called People to People. It was started by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Ever since then multiple presidents have been chairmen for it.

Though this program cost about $9,000, it is supposed to be very rewarding. You are taught native languages, dances, go to school in New Zealand, and stay with a Fijian family. Also you get to go to the opera house in Australia, and get to interact with koalas, kangaroos, and more. Not to mention learning to surf, oh yeah!

People to People do this every year in multiple age group going different places in the world. It is not a scam and you have an overall great experience. They also give you high school and college credits if you go. They do this to spread worldwide understanding of different cultures; if you decided to go this year, next year, or any years to come you will never forget it. Fiction Spotlight

Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series became a fast growing obsession in the U.S., and now the first movie of the series has hit theatres. So what hap-pened when one of the most anticipated films of the year came out? Mass hysteria and people flocking to the theatres to go see it. Already many of the students at our school have gone to see the movie. Jennifer Morrison says “I want a love like Edward and Bella. Twilight was the cutest movie, I cried.” It seems that overall the movie has been a major success and has already grossed around $7 million within the first few hours. Seems that the movie has two big thumbs up, but we still think we will wait for the crowds to die down before we go see it.

JOKE:

A man with a peg leg, hook hand and an eye patch went to apply to be a pirate.

Interviewer: How did you get that peg leg?

Pirate: Arrr. I got me leg shot off during the first world war.

Interviewer: How did you get that hook?

Pirate: I got me hand cut off by a big knife.

Interviewer: What about your eye patch?

Pirate: It was a rainy afternoon and I looked up into the sky and a bird pooped in

me eye.

Interviewer: And that put your eye out?

Pirate: No, it was the day after I got me hook.

Rick Larson Britney B On October 13, 2008 Rick Larson, running for congress, came to Cavelero. He came and talked with students and answered questions. Everyone had outstanding questions, from the Bailout, to what he wants to do in the future when he is congress. Background information on Rick Larson is that he is a democrat and in 2001 he came into office as a congressman. Ever since 2001, he has been re-elected every two years. He is trying to make it a 6th term in office. Rick Larson was kind to the 8th and 9th grade students. He listened thoughtfully, and answered them the best he could. One question said by McKenzie Simon was: “What are your political views on the No Child Left Behind Act?” Larson was in awe of the question. He an-swered that the No Child Left Behind Act has not helped students the way it thought it would. He is trying to make it so students can graduate on improvement from one year to the other. Rick Larson said he voted ‘yes’ on the bail out for many reasons. He got 2500 phone calls and e-mails telling him to vote ‘no.’ Why? He voted yes because he needed to look at the whole picture and what each one could do.

Tell me, what do you see? I want to know

The blatant truth. Be frank with me.

No more secrets please.

You say it doesn’t matter. Does it really have to matter?

I am asking you to tell me. How is that so hard?

So…

Look at me.

Really look at me. What do you see?

Tell me, what do you see? I want to know

The blatant truth. Be frank with me.

No more secrets, please.

A Punk and A Jock

by Ashley Bilyeu

“BEEP, BEEP, BEEP.”

“SHUT UP!”

“ I’m getting up ok?”

“It’s too cold for a skirt today, maybe I should wear pants.” This happens everyday I get up and I can’t figure out what to wear. I usually end up just making it down to the bus stop just in time for the bus. I go quickly to the back and wait for my friends to get on. When we get to the next stop I see my friend Jasmine waiting to get on. She’s all bundled up. It’s just beginning to get to winter, so the days get colder and shorter. She gets on and immediately comes to sit by me. She asks me “how was your weekend?” I tell her “nothing really happened, and you?” She tells me that she just got a new sweater. Just as we stop that conversation our other friend Shelby walks on. She asks us what we did and we tell her. She tells us that she got into a big fight with her mother about differences, we didn’t mind to ask what the differences were. As we pull into school, I see Jake the guy who has had my heart since 6th grade.

I haven’t really introduced myself yet. I’m Chrystal, I grew up in New York but now I live in Forks, Washington. Let me tell you New York and Washington have nothing in common. I’m about 5’6’, I have blonde hair, and I dress punk. As for Jake, he’s our schools starting quarter back and a skate boarder. He has the kind of hair that when he shakes his head his hair sways, but it’s not too long. He and I are total opposites he’s a star football player and I’m a punk rock girl with brains. I think in all the time we’ve seen each other in the hall he hasn’t said two words to me. The thing is I wish we would have a class together. We currently attend Forks High School, he and I are juniors. So I only have two years left to make him notice me.

skills. Tory placed 3rd and Joe placed 8th in districts. The two Hannahs are the next power houses. They are not twins, but cyborgs from planet Zolar. They are not human they are machines. The Hueser series of Hannah was a scorer in every race she ran, but was un-able to place in districts because she had not finished computing a test. The Haegeland series also was a scorer in every race she ran and placed 15th in districts. James is the sleeping sprinter. He has done well all year, but his district run, made his other runs look slow. It was awesome to see him hit the turbo bust button and haul for his 5th place win in districts. Alex Masse is a juggernaut. He had one of the most amazing increases in speed throughout the year. He improved by 1:21 from the beginning to the end of the year and became one of our scorers in districts. The juggernaut starts slow but when his speed picks up, he is unstoppable. Brooke Busch is part deer. She gallops her way into the lead and into our hearts. She rocks. Leighton, Beau and Keenan are some of the hardest working runners on the planet. They run hard every practice. Leighton never stops break dancing and will even sometimes spin his way over the finish line. Beau makes Forest Gump look slow and Keenan is a centaur sprinting until the end. Javon was able to make it into our top five and become one of the scor-ers in districts. Mild mannered student by day, super fast runner by the afternoon. Keith started running a little later, and was not part of the first races. He is so fast that when he kicks it into high gear, he passes people like they are standing still. He more than likely has the power to fold space or stop time. Caitlin came from the heart of Texas. She is a great addition to our team, and when she found her pace, she had some amazing races. Ben and Ryan were two more runners that joined after the start of the season and helped our team out. Ben was there to bring the jokes, and Ryan was there dazzling us with his heat vision. Alex ran each race with determination of a tiger. Grrrr Cole, Dodge, and Jacob ran like hungry titans in a race for the last Twin-kie at the 7-11. Jacob had nearly a 2 min improvement from being to end of the year. Dallas, Wesley, Devon and Christian rounded out our team with quickness and power of gazelles. The boys took first in every race they ran this year and had 2 perfect scores. The girls also did great. They took 1st in 4 out of 6 races they were in. Apollo started using his team of new horses and we have to apologize, they are too fast. The days are getting shorter. We have faxed a memo to Apollo that he needs to add more weight to his chariot to slow them down enough so that the earth doesn’t freeze.

Myths and Legends: The story of the 8th grade cross country team BY MR. MILLER It all started innocent enough. Apollo notices that his horses that pull his sun chariot were getting older. Their 401 k’s were doing real well and it looked like they were going to be able to retire pretty soon. It was time for Apollo to find some new horses. He grabbed Tinkerbell and as he passed by Lake Stevens, he shook her over the side of the chariot in hopes that the magic will pass to the next generation of horses. If you have paid attention at all in history class, you know that it has been fabled that a team of young horses would form the speed of which the world has never seen. This team would be coached by a Fabio look alike that has an obsession with the smurfs. Well it looks like the stars are aliened and that team is here. Dakota found himself hanging out eating hay out in a field when pow! He got hit with a fist full of powder. From that moment on his speed could only be described as blazing. He took first in any race that he ran. Unfor-tunately he didn’t run more than 2 races. Kiaya was the next to get slammed with fairy dust. Her speed was also blinding. Apollo knew that these two runners got too much of magic. He was pleased. Deme-ter however, was upset. He is the god of agriculture and he knows that his plants would not get enough sun, because the chariot would be moving too fast. 4 hour days would make farming difficult. He sent plagues, snakes, and tripping vines out to stop them. Unfortu-nately, Demeter’s jealousy finally won. Neither speed demon was able to finish the season. Lucky for Apollo, he spilled enough fairy dust to choke a herd of baby horses. Caleb was next in a long line of fast runners. He started the year placing 7th in a race with over 100 runners. He improved by 20 seconds over the course of season and ended up placing 1st in Districts. The Twins, what myth is complete without twins. The Pahukoas, they got faster and faster as the year pro-gressed. Every race they ran in this year they placed within 2 seconds of each other. No one ever came be-tween them in those races. Their sprints at the end were legendary and brought fear into the hearts of the other runners. Brooke always seemed to push that little extra at the end to get ahead by a second. Tory and Joe are your giants. Towering over the com-petition, scaring them with their tremendous basketball

Have You Found This Surprise In Your Grapes? P A G E 1 1 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 1

The most brave of us might freak out a little if we found a spider in our grapes, especially if that spider was a black widow. Black widow bites are deadly (but no one in the United States has died from a bite since the 1960’s). The thought of finding a black widow at

the bottom of your grapes might send a shiver up your spine, and it certainly did just that to Nancy Pitts, a local woman who found the spider in a car-ton of grapes she had pur-chased at Costco.

Before you swear off grapes, relax a little. It’s rare to find this dan-

gerous creepy crawling making a home in the new grapes your mom just bought. Just wait to eat them till someone else has them washed!

Even if you think spiders are no big deal, we think this one might make you squirm a little.

CAVELERO’S VETERN’S DAY ASSEMBLY Monday, November 10th Cavelero honored the many United State’s

veterans by holding an assembly. Our own leadership class (taught by Ms. Poirier) put on the assembly and it turned out very well.

Choir The choir also had quite a performance. Kelly Grif-fith, Kristin Austin and Sam Murdock all sang and did wonderfully. The choir also sounded beautiful singing “Amazing Grace”.

Speaker Mrs. Fredrickson’s hus-band, Mr. Fredrickson gave a heartwarming speech to the students.

Blog Wars

By: Joseph (Josh) Williams With Veterans Day finished up there are three main wars

that come to mind. World War Two, Vietnam and Iraq. These wars have affected America most recently. WW2 being our latest (hopefully also the last) World War, Vietnam andthe trauma that the troops went through, and Iraq because it is happening now to our brother, sisters, parents, friends and all of these people, right now. But we might get to know what’s going on better now. The war is being blogged about by quite a few people over there. People of all ranks, well mainly recruits, or in this case machine gunner Colby Buzzel. Of course they don’t seem to always tell people that they are blogging. They usually have usernames that few (if anyone) know, because it’s considered giving away sensitive information and is thus prohibited. But Colby was discovered when he wrote the blog Men In Black (no not the movie or alien superstition we hear about), about the ambush on his platoon by terrorist extremists, where he saw someone survive a shot to the head! The superiors realized it was him, and the cat was out of the bag.

Now Colby’s wife (Sadly now, ex-wife) didn’t even know

the secret that he’s a milbogger (military officer bloggers). He’s been forced to stop blogging. He’s made a book called My War: Killing time in Iraq. The war has given him some fame, from his newfound skills as a writer. But it has cost him a few (but very important) things. It has cost him his mind due to post-traumatic stress disorder and it has cost him his marriage.

But of course there’s other people blogging over there.

Sometimes to keep in touch, sometimes to help with processing trau-matic parts of the war and some times just to let everyone know what’s going on over there. Thanks to people like him, we can under-stand how some of the most dangerous parts of Iraq are. Then we have a better idea of how our friends and family are doing over there. We may even learn about some of the quiet areas we rarely ever hear about on the news. Now thousands of milblogs are doing this stuff under odd names. Thanks to these people we understand the war, and all of the things happening to our heroes over seas. Now, let us re-member not just them though. Let us also remember all the infamous and even nameless heroes of war. They also deserve praise, and I suggest we all take a moment of silence for them today and every other day. God bless America!

As the election comes to a close, and we have a new president in place we must consider what will come about next time. Most people here at Cavelero will vote for the next leader of our country.

The mock election held earlier this month should have given all the future voters the experience they will need in four years. Our school’s results were the same as our country’s; just barely Obama. According to Ms. Ormsby, our election was definitely successful, “There was a lot of excitement” she said, after all about one thousand students voted out of around thirteen hundred.

As to next election when the majority of Cavelero’s students will be over eighteen, the thousand who voted may or may not vote for the next president. Those who do will “be more enthusiastic” as said by Ms. Ormsby. Sarah Ruiz mentioned “Knowing I had to prepare to vote made me want to learn about the presidential campaigns, which is how I will prepare for the real elections.” Researching each candidate and “looking at how each candidate feels about the issues” is what Ms. Ormsby says is important in deciding who to vote for.

Earlier this year as the candidates were decided, peopled seemed to refer to the choices as “a black” (Obama), “a woman” (Clinton), and “a Mormon” (Romni). It’s odd to determine our opinion of each candidate according to their race, gender or religion, because those things aren’t going to determine the defini-tion of marriage, or whether or not abortion should be legal. When asked if she thought having an African American president would decrease racism, Ms. Ormsby replied “Yes, because people will have a chance to look beyond this race.”

Ultimately voting is up the individual next time. Same thing as to whether or no those who do vote will be informed, and how they look at each candidate. All I can say is, choose well.
