In general it may be noted that the Royal Dublin Society, which managed Glasnevin Botanic Gardens until 1878, was assiduous in not preserving records of staff (even the minutes of the Committee of Botany are not entire). After 1877 there are better (but not perfect) records, in particular an uninterrupted series of workmen’s day books (paybooks) recording the daily attendance of each member of the gardening staff (but not of office staff) and their wages; these paybooks have been extracted, but, of course, this source does not include dates of birth, In addition, It should be noted that during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, at busy seasons, casual labour was often engaged; in scanning the paybooks, it Is possible that some of the temporary gardeners and labourers may have been overlooked inadvertently but it is unlikely that any long—serving gardener or student-apprentice will have been omitted. Thus, the register is more likely to be complete for staff employed after 1877; before that year records are most fragmented.

THEY GARDENED GLASNEVIN: a register of gardeners, labourers, student-apprentices and lady gardeners in the Botanic Gardens at Glasnevin, Dublin 1795-1945

INTRODUCTION

The Dublin Society acquired land in north County Dublin on 25 March 1795 and thereon established the botanical garden which today bears the title National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin (see Nelson & McCracken 1987; Nelson 1987, 1989).

Having undertaken to cultivate a botanical garden, as a patriotic project funded by the Irish parliament, the Dublin Society was obliged to employ gardeners and labourers, and also to establish a directorate; the first person engaged was Dr Walter Wade, who served as Professor of Botany until his death in 1825. In the following register are listed the names, dates of birth, and dates of appointment and departure of all persons known to have been employed or to have been apprenticed In the Glasnevin Botanic Gardens between 25 March 1795 and 25 March 1945, including those who directed the work of the Gardens as curator, keeper, director or professor of botany to the Dublin Society.

In compiling and collating this register, I deliberately chose as the termination date 25 March 1945 because it marked the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Gardens, and moreover It denoted (although not precisely) the end of one keepership (John Besant) and the beginning of a new one (Thomas Walsh).

There is no single, continuous source available from which data about the staff of the Glasnevin Botanic Gardens can be extracted; the sources available are listed below and comments made there on their contents and extent.

THE REGISTER

Each entry is divided into five columns, thus:

Column 1: name, as recorded in the available sources, with surname first, followed by christian name(s).

Column 2: date of birth, If available: all dates conform to the pattern YEAR. MONTH. DAY: (see also below).

Column 3: the date on which the person commenced working at Glasnevin (‘came’).

Column 4: the date on which the person ceased working at Glasnevin (‘left’); some men, who came as apprentices, left to become journeymen in other gardens and then returned to the Glasnevin Botanic Gardens as full gardeners, and thus in many instances there will be more than one date of commencement and departure.

Column 5: ‘notes’ Including manuscript sources of dates [enclosed in square brackets); notes on the later career of student-apprentices, on the positions held in Glasnevin, etc.; reason for resignation (e.g. ‘reached age limit’) or departure if these were discovered during research; notes sometimes include dates of death.

When no source Is quoted the Information published here was extracted from the entire sequence of ‘Paybooks’, and the quarto notebooks labelled ‘Staff Book... 1894 to April 1942’ and ‘Staff Book April 1942...’, and the two other notebooks labelled ‘Came’ and ‘Left’ (see below).

Dates enclosed In square brackets, e.g. [1860], were deduced or calculated by the present compiler. Other standard annotations may be used when Information Is imprecise or dubious.

In general the post occupied by the person is not stipulated because the person was a gardener. However, anyone entering the Botanic Gardens as a teenager, and remaining for two years (at least Initially), will have entered as an apprentice (later termed a student gardener).

A caveat Is required concerning the birth dates of people listed herein. It was not unusual in Ireland during the nineteenth century (and in the early years of the present century) for men and women deliberately to falsify their dates of birth In order to gain employment (age increased) or, contrariwise, to prolong employment beyond the required retirement date (age decreased); in several Instances it is clear that false dates were given and such discrepancies are noted; It has not been possible to verify the dates of birth In civil or parochial registers.
