THEWEEK@SAINTBENEDICT Dear parents and carers Welcome to another week at Saint Benedict and I hope you all had a pleasant weekend. We are currently in the process of visiting our partner primary schools in order to meet with students who will be joining us in September. Andy Clare, our Chaplain and Mr Vincent Round are currently on tour with students from Year 7 who are sharing their experiences with current Year 6 students as well as offering lots of reassurance. Over the weeks ahead all of our new Year 7 will be joining us as part of the induction process. With children coming from up to 40 different primary schools there will be lots of opportunities to make new friends as the children get to know us and work out where all of their new classrooms will be. Another group of students with a big change coming up are our current Year 11 and last week we celebrated their Mass prior to the exams where we reflected on our time at Saint Benedict and on the challenge ahead. It was very moving to have the whole year group together at this time and the students I spoke to after the Mass felt very comforted by the experience. We wish them and our Sixth Form students all the very best over the weeks ahead. Our Year 10 prefects are doing a great job around the school. They have taken up their duties and are currently supporting staff around the site looking after the younger students along with teachers who are on duty. Congratulations to all students who were appointed as senior prefects for their houses and who will be organising the prefect team of over 100 students as they move into Year 11. Well done to the Princes Trust students on their successful cake sale last week—they raised money for Cancer Research & Living Paintings and thanks to everyone who supported our Enhanced Resource Base coffee morning last week which raised money for a school in Tanzania to buy items to support multi-sensory learning for the children . For those of you who don’t normally get to see the excellent work that goes on in the ERB, we have around 30 visually or physically impaired students who are part of our school community but who have specialist provision in the ERB. It is rare for this kind of provision to be based at a school so we are par- ticularly proud to have this group of staff and students as part of our community. Can I ask as ever that you remain vigilant in helping your children stay safe online. I have mentioned this before but nationally and locally there are more and more headlines about issues which start from students’ use (or misuse) of social media. We are proac- tive in our work with students, running workshops, assemblies and lessons which all help children learn about staying safe online, however we are not able to police what students are sharing or posting at home. If your child has a mobile phone, have you asked them if they have an Instagram, Facebook or Snapchat account? If they do have any form of social media account, talking to your children about the type of thing they are posting or sharing and checking is important. We always remind students that they are actually more responsible for the things they post from home than the things they say face to face as posts can be photographed and end up in the hands of the Police. We sometimes tend to be a little bolder in the things we say or type when we are not face to face! At the recent end of season awards night for Derby Hockey Club the following Saint Benedict pupils received awards. Men's 5th team Players’ Player Joe Gallagher Year 10; Captain’s Player of the Season, James Tanton (6th form); U18 Men's Player of the Season, joint winners James Tanton, & Jordan Hughes (Year11); Poppy Baxter Women's 4th team Captain Player of the Year, also she was voted U18 Women's Player of the Year. Well done to all students involved. As always we have a busy week ahead with Year 11 and Year 13 Leavers’ Assemblies, and a Year 13 students Leavers’ Mass on Friday. Also just a reminder that the Summer Fayre Is at 1pm on Saturday the 9th July. Thanks as always for your support and have a good week. Kevin Gritton Headteacher ISSUE NO 14 23 May 2016

THEWEEK@SAINTBENEDICT

Dear parents and carers Welcome to another week at Saint Benedict and I hope you all had a pleasant weekend.

Our Year 10 prefects are doing a great job around the school. It is rare for this kind of provision to be based at a school so we are par-ticularly proud to have this group of staff and students as part of our community.
