FROM THE PASTOR

2

Hebrews 10:23-25Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

The days of summer are truly coming. Since the days of our youth we have associated summer with vacations and holidays; at least I have. Summer time is not just about going away, it’s about a break from our routine. Many of us, myself included enjoy breaks from our routine and need breaks from our routine. It serves as rest, relaxation as well as the rejuvenation needed for September. This is almost a sabbatical. I recently heard a school teacher say that the summer break is her small sabbatical. In September she is restored, rejuvenated and recharged, ready for the new year.

While taking a break from the routines of life is helpful we ought not take a break from everything. We don’t stop eating or drinking. We ought not stop exercising though maybe exercise in a different way. We also should not stop going to worship or to “church”. It is not helpful to take a break from coming together as the people of God. Keeping up with our relationship with God and God’s people is essential to our being.

We are fortunate as members of First Lutheran. We can take a break from our worship routine and still keep up with our worship since we have three different worship opportunities each week. If you go to Sunday worship every week, try the Wednesday night service. Always go to Saturday night service, go on Sunday. All three of our services are different.

Sunday is more traditional, Saturday is more intimate, meeting in the chapel, and Wednesday is even more casual, meeting this summer in the garden with camp songs, guitars and s’mores.

If you go out of town why not try something different by attending a church where you are?

I am provoking you not to neglect worship. As your pastor I care about you and your spiritual health. Worship is essential to your spiritual health.

Have a great summer!Pastor Arte

S’MORE WORSHIPWednesdays this summer.....bring your camping chair to the Gustafson Garden.....Dinner at 5:30....Worship at 6.....with s’mores.

NEWS & EVENTS

3

TEAM MEETINGS Teams will meet again on Tuesday, June 6th at 7:00 p.m. The Property Team will meet at 4 pm, and Youth Team will meet at 6:00 p.m.

CIRCLE BIBLE STUDIESEve Circle will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20th at Pat Swanson’s home.

Martha Circle meets Wednesday, June 21st at 9:30 a.m. at Barb Siewert’s cabin.

Mary Circle meets Wednesday, June 21st at 10:00 a.m. in the Conference Room.

QUILTING GROUPFirst Lutheran’s Quilting Group will meet the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month, June 14 & 28 at 1:00 p.m. in the Music Room downstairs. Everyone is welcome to join in making quilts to help keep less fortunate people warm and to present to babies baptized at First. If you can tie or sew, you are welcome to join this group.

MEN’S BIBLE STUDYAll men are invited to join the First Lutheran Men’s Bible Study group every Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. in the Conference Room. The “current attendees” meet with coffee, pastry, and fellowship while discussing the upcoming service readings. This is a good way to listen and contribute your thoughts on various books of the Bible.

MEALSFirst Lutheran has a ministry team that will provide a meal for individuals/families in need due to health issues, a surgery, a new baby, or other circumstances. If you know of a member whose family could use a meal, call Julie at the office. She will contact the ministry team that coordinates meals for a couple weeks. We want to help when we can.

SUMMER MUSICEach year from September through May our services are full of music provided by the choir, handbells, children, Praise team but during the summer these groups take a hiatus from weekly rehearsals and Sunday commitments. During the summer we like people to provide some different types of special music like solos, duets, etc which are both sung and played. Now we know that many of these people are already in a group who may provide some special musical selection and that is great. We also welcome those who are not in a regular group. This is a chance to perhaps sing or play something of your choosing. Let Marilee know what you would like to do. I do not know your summer schedule so you need to give me possible dates. I look forward to working with you.

HANDBELL RINGING ExPLORATIONS All of the events below are open to the community and surrounding area of Red Wing. When you come, be sure to invite others to come with you.

Handbell Boot CampWant to learn what bells are all about? Ever wanted to try them and see if you can be a ringer? A two week session for youth and adults will be offered on Wednesdays, August 9 and 16 from 5:00 - 6:00. You will learn the basics of bell ringing, what do you to make all those sounds, and lots of other neat things. Think about signing up for this fun class. E-mail Marilee at [email protected]

Bells of the Bluffs AuditionsBells of the Bluffs will be holding auditions for our next season. The date is Thursday, August at 5:30 at First Lutheran. If you are or know anyone you know is interested in the “next” level of challenging ringing, have them contact us more more information. Our website is bellsofthebluffs.org . We can be reached at [email protected] or 651-808-4589.

SUMMER 2017 OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH

Join us for Super Hero Vacation Bible School June 11th -15th from 6 - 8 p.m. VBS is for students ages 3 years old through completed 4th grade.

MN Nice is a daytime activity for students who have completed grades 5-7. We will be doing service projects, having devotional time, and of course some games and fun too!

Registration forms for both of these great events are available in the Narthex, in the May Spire, and online at www.firstlutheranrw.com.

Wait, what? You want to help? That would be great, we have lots of different things we need volunteers to help with for VBS and MN Nice, contact Tina to find out more, and add your name to the list of wonderful volunteers! All of our great children and youth programming are able to take place because we’ve got the volunteers that make time for our kids!
