INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this study is for them to be aware of what will be the effect of
their bad habits in segregating wastes and to improve their way of living.
Waste Management, also called solid waste management, this refers to the discipline
associated with the control of generation, storage, collection, transfer and transport,
processing, and disposal of solid wastes in a manner that is in accord with the best
principles of public health, economics, engineering, conservation, aesthetics, and other
environmental considerations, and that is also responsive to public attitudes (Republic
Act. No. 9003 ‘Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000”)
Inefficient waste collection and the lack of disposal facilities are the common
problems in developing countries. Due to the lack of resources to purchase advanced
and expensive technologies to support waste management activities, developing
countries are more affected than developed countries. In most developing countries,
the municipal solid waste stream is ‘dominated by organics’. That means that the use
of incineration is difficult, that the use of composting is necessary. There are also a
huge of people in informal sector who are actively involved in waste collection,
separation and recycling. There is often a shortage of capital and human resource to
manage the waste; and there is a lack of physical infrastructure in urban areas to make
the waste collection more efficient, and therefore the situation calls for “low-tech”
solutions (UNEP-IETC 1996).

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study aims to aware the citizens in Halang, Calamba regarding the “Proper
Segregation of Waste Materials”
1. What is the perception of the residents of Halang, Calamba City on implementation
of common practices?
2. What is the perception of selected residents of Halang, Calamba City towards the
effectiveness of waste management?
METHOD
The researcher used quantitative research design. The information was
gathered using a self made questionnaire to determine the common practices and
effectiveness of the proper waste management. The researcher’s respondents consisted
of 30 respondents in Barangay Halang Calamba City, within the area.

RESEARCH DESIGN
The researcher used quantitative research design. The information was
gathered using a self made questionnaire to determine the common practices and
effectiveness of the proper waste management.
RESPONDENTS
The researcher’s respondents considered of 30 local resident respondents in
Barangay Halang Calamba City, within the area. They answered the survey
questionnaire that the researchers gave them which supplies the information the
researchers need.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
The data for this research were collected using a survey questionnaire. The
survey was created using suitable questions modified from related research and
individual question formed by the researcher. The survey was comprised of 10
questions, which were related to the participants’ perception regarding on local waste
management.

The researchers assured confidentiality of their survey sheets since the
identities are not important. The researchers also understood that people’s
consciousness may also affect their honesty and effectiveness in answering the survey,
and so, the researchers gave people the option of being anonymous.
DATA ANALYSIS
The responses of the respondents to the survey questionnaire were carefully tallied,
tabulated and organized. The data presented, analyzed and interpreted with the used of
weighted mean, frequency counts, percentage and ranking system.
The presentation, analysis and interpretation of the data will be based on the
weighted mean as shown by the scale ranges as follows.
FORMULA:
W =SA x 4 + A x 3 + D x 2 + SD x 1
N = 30
Where: Scale:
3.5 – 4.0 = SA
2.5 – 3.40 = A
1.5 – 2.49 = D
1.0 – 1.49 = SD

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
The result of the study shows that all of the respondents strongly agree that one of
their common practices is segregating biodegradable and non biodegradable. They
strictly follows no plastic policy, they also reuse scrap materials for other purposes and
brings eco bags when shopping, travelling or packing lunches. The respondents
strongly agree that the current use of eco bags is an effective way to avoid using
plastic bags that can be the cause in the clogged drainage problem. But the respondents
disagree that there is an overall improvement of cleanliness in their community and
that there is a proper disposal and treatment of waste that reduce land pollution in their
barangay.
CONCLUSION
Based on the interpretation above, the researcher conclude that some of the
surroundings at Brgy. Halang Calamba City needs an improvement on proper disposal
of their waste and should take consideration by the Barangay to improve the safety of
the community. The residents of this Barangay should focus on how to reduce waste,
and the officials should implement a plan to reduce pollution and developed a basic
sustainable waste management system in the community. The barangay officials
should focus on where they can properly dispose all their waste that can’t also harm
any other person.
