welcome one and all!We are delighted you have chosen to spend your afternoon with us at the symphony. mirroring your many voices we have crafted a season that, following the ancient practice of counterpoint, guides the individual voices towards a more perfect harmony. a harmony that serves as our community's beacon of strength and hope. We all need to just sit still long enough to listen with a hearing heart.
the inner and outer worlds found within the space of an octave are dizzying, frightening, and inspiring at once. We want you to find your way to the symphony through friends, through great music, and most of all through the spirit of fun and adventure that anticipates the new and untried. It is our fervent hope you will find resonance between your song and ours.
We open with star violinist yevgeny kutik performing the brooding and dramatic Sibelius Violin Concerto before we present Brahms's passionate and tender Second Symphony. our candy cane concert features the old chestnuts and musical candy canes, with my old friend Frank Babbitt, who comes to us courtesy of the chicago Lyric opera, with his charming and original reading of Dickens's A Christmas Carol.
the new year finds Dr. richard kogan taking our popular "Deconstructing" series to a new level as he applies his psychiatric acumen to the psyche andmusic of rachmaninoff before treating us to the his thundering rendition of the Second Piano Concerto. Dear friends connie evingson and composer/arranger Lynn hutchinson take us to a bygone era of innocence and wonder with sesame street's muppets. here's an opportunity to use music to connect with your own children and grandchildren, and to reconnect with your own childhood.
We bring the season to a rousing close with the imaginative and lush music of argentina, mexico, Brazil, and the Basque country in our very own cinco de mayo celebration.
each concert features music that will draw you closer to the song in your own heart and the music running through our community. Which is precisely why we at the mankato symphony do what we do! Join us as we all "sing out loud, sing out strong!"
musically yours,Ken

Lose yourself in the sweeping music of two of the world’s greatest composers. Both Brahms and sibelius are classicists at heart who will shake your very soul with soaring melodies, gorgeous dialogue, and dramatic gestures. hailed for his dazzling command of the violin, russian-american violinist yevgeny kutik has become a highly sought-after artist on the concert stage worldwide and will lay bare the tempestuous soul of Finland. Brahms’ sense of evolving harmony and melody has made the second symphony a timeless favorite of audiences and players since it was written in 1877. A traditional concert experience.

harvard trained practicing psychiatrist and world-renowned concert pianist richard kogan, mD gives insights into how composer sergei rachmaninoff battled depression and a mental breakdown, yet survived to write the glorious Piano Concerto No. 2, dedicated to his psychiatrist. For the intellectually curious who long for the story behind the music, the first part of this concert involves a lecture before performing the entire piece.
