Experience the New Dimension

The revolutionary ion optics and the intuitive user interface make operation of the instrument easy and straightforward.

TechnologySeveral new technologies have been incorporated in into this revolu tionary massspectrometer to provide the most powerfulGC/MS mass spectrometer ever designed.

Novel AnalyzerThe newly designed analyzer is the firstwith virtually no image aberrations. It isperfectly double focusing, employing anultra high precision toroidal electrostaticanalyzer and a carefully refined magneticanalyzer. This directly translates into stability and ruggedness• Tuning for highest sensitivity does not

influence the preset resolution• Fully automatic ion source tuning• Automatic setting of mass resolution• No tuning of other ion optical elements• Mass calibration completely independent

from any scan or tuning parameter• Single universal mass calibration for all

modes of operationThe DFS is forgiving and robust while

delivering the highest sensitivity and selectivity.

Ion SourceThe ion source has been designed with special emphasis on sensi tivity, durabilityand ease of maintenance. Low maintenanceand short downtime increase productivity.• Exchange of ion volume and filament

without venting• Plug-in ion source for easy maintenance• Optimized long lifetime filaments for EI

and CI• New easy-to-use high stability reference

inlet system

ElectronicsThe DFS has completely new, state-of-the-art electronics. It uses dedicated micro-con-trollers on all boards, enabling efficient andfast computer control and read-back of allimportant parameters and voltages througha common inter connect bus. The magneticfield regulator is fast and stable, yet veryenergy efficient, utilizing ‘power-on-demand’ switching power supplies. It fully complies with the EU power factor correction directive. The magnetic field iscontrolled with 20 bit digital reso lution and receives its feedback from a uniquemagnetic field probe, supporting the singleuniversal mass calibration.

Chassis and CabinetThe new small-footprint cabinet is aestheticand functional. It contains the analyzer, theelectronics, and the complete pumping sys-tem, including roughing pumps. No preciousspace is wasted. Through its ingeniousdesign it allows the DFS to be shipped completely assembled with the magnet inplace. This means very short installationtime, no need for a crane, and the securitythat the system arrives exactly the way ithas been tested in the factory. Due to theinnovative technology the mass spectrome-ter weights less than conventional magneticsector instruments, thus minimizing thedemands on the laboratory environment.

Tune SoftwareThermo Scientific TunePlus is the renowneduser interface for ion trap and triple quadrupole MS (Thermo Scientific LCQ, LTQ, LXQ, TSQ Quantum). For the first time,a magnetic sector mass spectrometer usesthe same concept, making tuning, experi-ment and sequence set-up intuitive andsimple. High resolution MID has now beenadded as an integral part of the user interface.

GC/MS ProductivityThe DFS delivers unprecedented flexibilityand productivity for large sample series. Itcan be optionally equipped with twoThermo Scientific TRACE GC Ultra units. The two GC units are simul taneouslyinstalled at the same ion source for separation on two independent GC setups.

It is a system designed for unattendedoperation, in which the Thermo ScientificTriPlus autosampler offers highest samplecapacity and ultimate sampling flexibilitywhile serving one or two TRACE GC Ultraunits from shared sample trays.

GCs can be equipped with a widerange of injectors, from cold on-column andsplit/splitless injectors, to advanced temperature programmed injectors (PTV),and the latest developments in large volume injection techniques (LVI).

Unprecedented Target Compound Performance

PesticidesThe routine confirmation and quantitation of pesticides onthe DFS high resolution GC/MS are demonstrated from a complex biological matrix sample extract measured in highresolution negative CI mode. More than 40 compounds fromthe target list, representing various pesticides and herbicidesfrom multiple chemical compound classes, are monitoredusing high resolution MID and are unambiguously identifiedusing a combination of the retention time and the accuratemass information. Excellent sensitivity and quantitative linearity over a wide concentration range down to the low femtogram level is shown in Figures 1 and 2 for Tolylfluanid,a phenylsulfamide fungicide. Figure 1 presents a measure-ment of ca. 25 fg, analyzed directly from a raw sampleextract. Very little matrix interference is observed. Figure 2shows the excellent lin earity of the method over the investigated concentration range.

Dioxins and FuransThe new DFS high resolution GC/MS is the reference instru-ment for the analysis on polybrominated and polychlorinateddioxins and furans (PCDD/F), delivering reliable results at thelowest detection levels ever achieved. Figure 3 presents atypical measurement of a food sample containing low concentrations of 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/F congeners. The chromato gram presented here on 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin corresponds to an approximate level of 20 fgof the substance injected on-column. Depending on thematrix interferences, detection levels in the single digit femtogram range can be achieved.

The DFS redefines performance

PerformanceThe DFS redefines performance. The inno-vative analyzer design provides the sensitiv-ity to routinely analyze compounds in thelow femtogram range.

Dioxin and furan analysis can be per-formed according to official internationalregulations such as EN 1948, EPA 1613, JIS K 0311/0312.

The unprecedented performance of theDFS will help you gain the largest amountof data from precious samples and lets youcut down on the amount of sample toextract. This is especially important in theultra trace analysis of lipophilic POPs. Thecleanup for these compounds is a lengthyand cost-intensive process employing sever-al chromatographic steps.

In cases where sensitivity is not suffi-cient, a higher amount of sample needs tobe cleaned up, which in certain cases canonly be accomplished by parallelization ofthe process. The sensitivity of DFS allowsthe lowest amount of sample use for quickcleanup. "Going Green" is realized on theDFS by a small footprint, less power con-sumption and minimum air condition load.

DFS Features• Mass Range of 2-6000 Da
