  • Westinghouse, Perma-Fix and Campoverde are establishing the BPU Thermal Treatment Technology and associated Services for European customers at the Westinghouse Clean Energy Technology Park, Springfields.

The Perma-Fix BPU technology has been selected by Westinghouse to be deployed at the Westinghouse Clean Energy Technology Park. This market-leading Thermal Treatment

Technology is well-established in the USA operating for over 25-years, treating waste from sites across the USA at their Richland Facility in Washington State. Siting an additional BPU facility in the UK provides access to this technology for European customers looking for cost effective Thermal Treatment Solutions.

The BPU is able to accept a wide envelope of waste types including problematic wastes to produce a stable final wasteform whilst also achieving a volume reduction factor of between 30 to 100:1 which meets the waste acceptance criteria of European disposal facilities.

    Westinghouse Clean Energy Technology Park

Locating the Perma-Fix BPU technology at the Westinghouse Clean Energy Technology Park provides customers with access to the full range of existing infrastructure and capabilities available at Springfields site from Waste Characterisation, Packaging, Consignment and Transport, through to Receipt, Storage, Sort and Segregation, Treatment and Final Disposal.

The site already houses a variety of Uranium Recovery Facilities as well as Acid Decontamination Facilities for the treatment of Metallic Wastes. Sharing these facilities will allow the development of bespoke nuclear materials management solutions to enable cost effective benefits to a wide range of customers in the UK and around Europe.

COST EFFECTIVE THERMAL TREATMENT FOR THE EUROPEAN MARKET

  • BPU TECHNOLOGY

The Batch Processing Unit (BPU) is a refractory lined vessel designed to treat a wide range of radioactive wastes. Key features and capability include:

    • Two-stage system with primary and secondary chambers• Secondary chamber operating at 1200oC with 2 sec residence time in full compliance

with directive 2010/75/EU• Throughput capacity of 2 - 3 metric tonnes / day• Can be operated 24-hours per day • 99.99% destruction of organic materials• Typical volume reduction factors of 30 to 100:1• Off-gas system to deal with NOx, SOx and acid gases• Batch process facility can be turned on and off for flexible and economic waste

    treatment

The BPU Technology is unique and able to treat the primary waste and return the emanating / conditioned secondary waste back to the Client (where necessary) in full compliance with the Client’s WAC.

The primary advantages of the BPU Thermal Treatment Technology are:

    • Capability to accept & treat problematic, LLW & ILW boundary wastes• Batch processing eliminates risk of cross-contamination of customer wastes• No requirement to segregate combustible / non-combustible waste prior to

treatment• Due to its size, the BPU is able to accept large components / multiple packages with

minimal prior size reduction / handling requirements• Capability to independently treat solids and liquids• Capability to process a wide variety of radioactive and hazardous materials• Capability to treat solids and liquids, oils, resins, sludges, slurries and wastewater

    COMPANY PROFILES

    Westinghouse Electric Company

Westinghouse Electric Company is the world’s leading supplier of safe and innovative nuclear technology. Westinghouse’s waste management experience combines design, engineering, technology development, manufacturing and delivery, installation, testing, commissioning, training, documentation, licensing and operation of waste treatment systems for dry active wastes, liquids, sludge, concentrates, spent resins and other types of radioactive waste.

The Westinghouse Springfields site in the UK has been at the heart of the UK nuclear industry for over 75 years. The first site in the world to produce fuel for a commercial nuclear power station, the site today employs more than 800 highly skilled workers and is home to the Westinghouse Clean Energy Technology Park.

    Perma-Fix Environmental Services

Perma-Fix was established in 1990 and has more than €54 million invested in existing radioactive treatment facilities and technologies. Perma-Fix owns and operates four nuclear licensed and authorised radioactive waste treatment facilities in the U.S. that currently treat more than 50,000 metric tonnes per annum from international waste generators, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the U.S. Department of Defence (DOD), nuclear reactors, and nuclear research facilities. Perma-Fix, as a global nuclear services company, ensures customer wastes are treated in full compliance with all international environmental regulations.

    Campoverde srl

Campoverde have operated in Italy since 1985 and offers over 30-years of experience in the management, handling, sampling and analysis of radioactive materials and wastes. Campoverde provides the advantage of local Italian and European experience and knowledge of the radioactive waste market, generated by medical research, industrial users and by the decommissioning of Italian nuclear sites.
