Many of the sites are very popular for cherry blossom viewing. A “Best 30” Cherry Blossom View Sukagawa As many as 350 cherry trees have been planted along both sides of the “Fureai Road,” which runs alongside the Shakadō River. A Cherry Blossom Festival is held between early and late April, along with night-time illuminations of the cherry trees. A “Best 30” Cherry Blossom View MAP C-4 Sukagawa The Former Site of Naganuma Castle has been planted with as many as 300 cherry trees of varying types, and when they are in full bloom, they dye the entire mountain pink, as though competing with each other to entertain the eyes of visitors. Kaiseizan Park Koriyama One of the premier cherry blossom-viewing sites in the prefecture, the park is home to 1,300 blossoming trees, including Somei Yoshino cherry, wild Yamazakura cherry and Kanzan cherry trees. When the trees are in full bloom, the blossoms are also illuminated after dark. Natsui Senbonzakura MAP E-4 Ono (Tamura District) In spring, this stretch of 5 km along the banks of the Natsui River boasts around 1,000 blooming cherry trees. Visitors can stroll along the walking path while gazing at the cherry blossoms, as well as enjoy the contrast between the cherry blossoms and the glittering surface of the river. Miharu Takizakura MAP E-3 Miharu (Tamura District) These pink weeping cherry trees have been counted as one of Japan’s top three cherry-blossom viewing sites. The way they bloom has been likened to a waterfall, earning them the name takizakura, “cascade of cherry blossoms.” Koriyama This stretch of Somei Yoshino cherries blooms for 3 km along both sides of the Fujita River, centering on the Horinouchi Bridge. The cherry blossom festival held when the trees are in full bloom bustles with singing, dancing, and busy concession stands. MAP D-3 Koshidai-no-Sakura MAP E-5 Furudono (Ishikawa District) This giant wild Yamazakura cherry was selected by the Forestry Agency to be one of the “Top 100 Giants of the Forest.” Measuring about 20m in height, the tree is over 400 years old, with a vitality that only seems to be increasing. The tree has also been designated by the prefecture as a Natural Monument. Kasumiga-jo Park MAP D-2 Nihonmatsu This park, once the site of Nihonmatsu Castle, also known as Kasumigajo (“the Castle of the Mists”), is well-known as cherry-blossom viewing site. With almost 2,500 blooming cherry trees of various sizes, including Somei Yoshino cherries, visitors can take pleasure in the park’s eponymous mist-covered beauty. Nihonmatsu The name derives from the fact that this was an old battlefield from the Former Nine Years' War, which took place in the early eleventh century. These two weeping cherry trees are about 180 years old, but they are also known as the “husband-and-wife cherry blossoms” from the way they stand so close together. MAP E-2 Hanamiyama Park MAP E-1 Fukushima A famous site for cherry-blossom viewing that would make one think that Fukushima is home to the fabled Peach Blossom Land of Chinese legend. Various types of flower, including Tokai-zakura, Higan-zakura, Somei Yoshino cherry, and Hana Peach, bloom all at once, competing with one another in a rampant profusion of color. Nanko Park Shirakawa Built in 1801 by Matsudaira Sadanobu, Nanko Park, said to be the oldest public park in Japan, encircles the verge of a lake measuring about 2 km in circumference. The neighboring Japanese garden Suirakuen is also a popular spot from which to enjoy the autumn colors. MAP C-5 MAP C-4 Nishigo (Nishishirakawa District) This arched rail bridge spans the upper reaches of the Abukuma River. Its legs are about 50m long, and the views from above the bridge afford visitors a chance to enjoy the splendid autumn colors and locally characteristic cliffs that have developed with unique columnar formations. The distinct colorings of the beech and the Japanese rowan make for a stunning contrast. The lookout on the Nishi-no-Sato Walking Path offers a wonderful vista encompassing Yukiwari Bridge and the valley beneath. Bandai-Azuma Lake Line MAP C-1 Inawashiro (Yama District) The Nakatsugawa Valley which flows into Akimoto Lake is famous as a site to enjoy autumn colors. Visitors can descend to the valley in about 15 minutes on foot from the rest house that sits along the Bandai Azuma Lake line. There is also a hiking course of the Akimoto Lakeside Road that follows a mountain stream. ■SukagawaThe Former Site of Naganuma Castle has been planted with as many as 300 cherry trees of varying types, and when they are in full bloom, they dye the entire mountain pink, as though competing with each other to entertain the eyes of visitors.

Kaiseizan Park

■Koriyama One of the premier cherry blossom-viewing sites in the prefecture, the park is home to 1,300 blossoming trees, including Somei Yoshino cherry, wild Yamazakura cherry and Kanzan cherry trees. When the trees are in full bloom, the blossoms are also illuminated after dark.

Natsui SenbonzakuraMAPE-4

■ Ono (Tamura District)In spring, this stretch of 5 km along the banks of the Natsui River boasts around 1,000 blooming cherry trees. Visitors can stroll along the walking path while gazing at the cherry blossoms, as well as enjoy the contrast between the cherry blossoms and the glittering surface of the river.

■Miharu (Tamura District)These pink weeping cherry trees have been c o u n t e d a s o n e o f J a p a n ’ s t o p t h r e e cherry-blossom viewing sites. The way they bloom has been likened to a waterfall, earning them the name takizakura, “cascade of cherry blossoms.”

■KoriyamaThis stretch of Somei Yoshino cherries blooms for 3 km along both sides of the Fujita River, centering on the Horinouchi Bridge. The cherry blossom festival held when the trees are in full bloom bustles with singing, dancing, and busy concession stands.

■Furudono (Ishikawa District) This giant wild Yamazakura cherry was selected by the Forestry Agency to be one of the “Top 100 Giants of the Forest.” Measuring about 20m in height, the tree is over 400 years old, with a vitality that only seems to be increasing. The tree has also been designated by the prefecture as a Natural Monument.

Kasumiga-jo ParkMAPD-2

■Nihonmatsu This park, once the site of Nihonmatsu Castle, also known as Kasumigajo (“the Castle of the Mists”), is well-known as cherry-blossom viewing site. With almost 2,500 blooming cherry trees of various sizes, including Somei Yoshino cherries, visitors can take pleasure in the park’s eponymous mist-covered beauty.

■Nihonmatsu The name derives from the fact that this was an old battlefield from the Former Nine Years' War, which took place in the early eleventh century. These two weeping cherry trees are about 180 years old, but they are also known as the “husband-and-wife cherry blossoms” from the way they stand so close together.

Nanko Park

■ShirakawaBuilt in 1801 by Matsudaira Sadanobu, Nanko Park, said to be the oldest public park in Japan, encircles the verge of a lake measuring about 2 km in circumference. The neighboring Japanese garden Suirakuen is also a popular spot from which to enjoy the autumn colors.
