TRANSCRIPT
There are few things that make me prouder of RMTC than work like Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. This powerful piece won a Tony Award on Broadway and resounds in a mighty way right here in the ‘Ham. To me, Billie Holiday’s music and story transcend her generation with a lot to say to us in 2017.
Join us in just a few weeks for another piece I’m proud to produce, a brand new work, called The Green Book. We’re partnering with the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center to bring this powerful story of historical fiction to life. Many people don’t realize that during the days of Jim Crow laws and segregation, The Negro Motorist Green Book was published as a resource for travelers to identify safe places for African Americans to eat, purchase gas, spend the night, and access other services across the U.S. The play uses this book as the centerpiece to explore the injustices faced during this critical period of U.S. history. The story takes a fascinating twist as a Jewish concentration camp survivor encounters a salesman for The Green Book while passing through town on his way to honor the African American veteran who saved his life. Don’t miss this one!

Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill
About the Show
Allow the music to whisk you back in time to a seedy 1959 Philadelphia bar, where Billie Holiday is performing a mere four months before her death. This is one of her very last performances. She’ll interlace more than a dozen musical numbers with her salty, often humorous, reminiscences, projecting a riveting portrait of the
lady and her music.

Phil Richardson (Production Stage Manager) joined the Red Mountain Theatre Company production team at the start of the 2015/16 season. He is a native of Madison, WI, and studied Technical Theatre at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Madison. His professional theatre career includes Design and Production work in Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago, Atlanta, New Haven, Phoenix, and Minneapolis where he spent six years with the Children’s Theatre Company. While at CTC, his contribution to the production department helped CTC earn the 2003 Regional Theatre Tony Award, a first for a theatre dedicated to a young audience. Prior to relocating to Birmingham, Phil served as the Production Manager of the Madison Repertory Theatre, The Rialto Center for the Arts in Atlanta, GA, Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, CT, The Arizona Broadway Theatre, and most recently Scenic Industries in AZ. Scenic and lighting design credits include: Orpheus and Eurydice, Green Sneakers; Opera Birmingham, Hair, Equus, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Rumplestiltskin; Barnett Theatre, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady; Crossman Players (Minn.), Don’t Leave Me Baby, Signor Deluso; Pillsbury House (Minn.), Into the Woods; Mercury Theatre (Chicago), Foreigner, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead; In the Basement Productions (Minn.) and A Moon for the Misbegotten for the Madison Repertory Theatre.
Brad Cozby (Resident Lighting Designer) has been a lighting/scenic designer and technical director for the last 12 years. He has worked across the United States as well as a short stint in Hong Kong. He has a M.F.A. in Lighting Design from University of South Carolina and a B.A. in Theatre from Grand Canyon University. Some of his notable designs include, The Little Mermaid, A Streetcar Named Desire, Macbeth, Stars in the Morning Sky, and Bloody, Bloody, Andrew Jackson.
Stephen Fister (Technical Director and Resident Scenic Designer) is originally from St. Louis, Missouri. Stephen has been working in theatre since his freshman year of high school. He began his professional career at Southeast Missouri State University, where he worked on a BFA’s in
Design/Tech and Acting/Directing with a musical theatre emphasis. After moving to Birmingham in fall of 2009, Stephen initially joined the RMTC team as an over hire painter before moving to his current role.
James Gibbs (Props Master) Jim is thrilled to be back at home in Birmingham, serving as Resident Production Stage Manager for RMTC. In his 20+ years in professional theatre, he has worked on Broadway, Off- Broadway and London’s West End as well as numerous national and international tours of North America, United Kingdom, Australia, China, and New Zealand. His first Broadway show Dame Edna-The Royal Tour received a 2000 TONY award. Regional credits include the California Shakespeare Festival, San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater, Magic Theater, Theater on the Square, and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. He received a BFA in Theatre Design at the University of Montevallo and an MFA in Stage Management at the American Conservatory Theater.
Amy Rankin (Costume Designer). I started sewing because everything I bought I had to alter. I continued to design clothing while working in corporate America, in accounting. I was offered a job to tour with an R&B artist. This led to 20+ years working in Wardrobe, touring the United States and internationally; affording me the opportunity to visit some great places and work with some awesome talent. In 2007, wanting to come off the road, I took on the challenge to costume Beauty and the Beast for Red Mountain Theatre Company. Over the ensuing years, I have cultivated my talents to evolve into the resident costume designer.
