Water Garden Tips There are 4 key factors in maintaining a clean, clear and healthy pond ecosystem. 1. The DefensePAC®: The products included in the DefensePAC ® provide benefi- cial bacteria, trace minerals, and fish and plant safe pond cleaner. These are essential to maintaining a clean, clear and healthy ecosystem. 2. Fish Load: When calculating your fish load think of it in pounds of fish or total inches. For example, one 6” fish can weigh as much as four 4” fish. The number of fish will affect the overall fish load, although ten small fish may only produce the waste of one large fish. With this said, remember that your fish are growing and in many cases multiplying. Always plan for the future and be careful not to overstock your pond. 3. Proper Filtration: The size and type of your filtration system will depend on your total fish load. If your filter is not properly sized for maximum potential, your fish will outgrow the filter. In most cases filters on the market are rated for ponds containing no fish or a minimal fish load. It is always best to use a filter that is rated for at least 2x the water volume of your pond. 4. Aquatic Plants: A simple rule of thumb is to have 60% plant coverage. This should consist of submerged, floating and marginal plants. Floating plants, such as Water Hyacinths, pull their nutri- ents directly from the water. Rooted plants, such as water lilies and marginal plants, create a great place for your fish to hide from predators. Please note when aquatic plants are not present, algae will take their place. Water Garden TipsThere are 4 key factors in maintaining a

clean, clear and healthy pond ecosystem.

1. The DefensePAC®:The products included in the DefensePAC® provide benefi-cial bacteria, trace minerals, and fish and plant safe pond cleaner. These are essential to maintaining a clean, clear and healthy ecosystem.

2. Fish Load:When calculating your fish load think of it in pounds of fish or total inches.

3. Proper Filtration:The size and type of your filtration system will depend on your total fish load. If your filter is not properly sized for maximum potential, your fish will outgrow the filter. In most cases filters on the market are rated for ponds containing no fish or a minimal fish load. It is always best to use a filter that is rated for at least 2x the water volume of your pond.

4. Aquatic Plants:A simple rule of thumb is to have 60% plant coverage. This should consist of submerged, floating and marginal plants. Floating plants, such as Water Hyacinths, pull their nutri-ents directly from the water. Rooted plants, such as water lilies and marginal plants, create a great place for your fish to hide from predators. Please note when aquatic plants are not present, algae will take their place.

USEFUL FORMULAS:• Pond Size:

Length x Width = Square Feet

• Gallons of Water: Square Feet x Average Depth x 7.5 = Gallons of Water Note: Average Depth = MAX Depth / 2

• Proper Pump Size for Waterfalls: Width of Waterfall (in feet) x 1500 GPH (gallons per hour) @ feet of head. Note: Head is calculated by measuring how many feet the water will drop from the top of the waterfall to the water’s surface. Also, add one foot of head for every 10’ of tubing.

Oxy-Lift™ Defense®

Pond CleanerUse to simply “lift” debris from waterfalls, streams, rocks and/or anywhere debris accumulates. Great for ponds that have fish and plants.

Oxy-Lift™ Defense® should be used whenever debris accumulate on rocks, gravel, waterfalls or streams. Water temperature has no effect on Oxy-Lift™ Defense®.

Turn off pump(s) and filtration system(s) – sprinkle Oxy-Lift™ Defense® over affected area. Wait 10 minutes before turning your system back on. Any additional square footage requires 1-2 scoops per 25 sq. ft. (1 scoop = 1 oz.)

Nature’s Defense®

Pond BalanCeNature’s Defense® naturally improves water clarity by reducing nutrients and suspended organic waste. Nature’s Defense® also reduces toxic ammonia levels by seeding and maintaining biological filters.

Nature’s Defense® is used throughout the spring, summer & fall when water temperatures are above 50°F. Apply every two weeks.

Apply water soluble packets directly to water (do not open). For best results, remove excess debris or use Oxy-Lift™ 24 hours before treatment. (1 packet = 1 oz.)

Clarity Defense®

Pond ClarifierClears pond water of suspended particulates, locks up excess nutrients, buffers pH, stimulates bacteria growth and makes regular maintenance a breeze.

Use Clarity Defense® with your first application of Nature’s Defense® and continue weekly thereafter. Clarity Defense® is not temperature sensitive and may be used anytime water becomes cloudy or murky.

Powder may be applied directly to the water or dissolved in a container of pond water. Pour evenly over the pond’s surface. May be dosed 2-3x the recommended dose with no adverse effects. (1 scoop = 1 oz.)

Muck Defense®

MuCk reduCerAccelerates the decomposition of organic matter caused from fish waste, dead leaves and dead algae. This product is a must for ponds with rocks and gravel that are difficult to vacuum.

Muck Defense® is used throughout the spring, summer & fall when water temperatures are above 50°F. Apply every four weeks.

Simply toss tablet(s) into the pond allowing them to settle and dissolve at the pond’s bottom. (1 tablet = 1 oz.)

Seasonal Defense®

SPrinG & fall PrePSpecially formulated to accelerate the decomposition of leaves, scum and sediment that builds up during the cooler fall and winter months. In the spring, it replenishes winter bacteria loss to jump start biological filters.

Seasonal Defense® works best when applied in late autumn and early spring or when water temperatures are below 50°F. Apply weekly. In areas where ice occurs, treatments may be discontinued while your pond is frozen over.
