Section 1: Crosswinds Counseling & Therapy Crosswinds exists to help bring about lasting change in the lives of our clients. We’ll help you honestly assess yourself and your family, set goals, and achieve those goals. Crosswinds’ Counseling

Approach

Crosswinds’ counseling approach is attachment-informed. This means we look at the relationships our clients have had throughout their lives and try to understand the beliefs they have created about themselves, others, and the world. We then look at how those beliefs are impacting their current relationships, and work with them to shift any beliefs that are unhealthy and/or creating unhealthy relationships.

Section 2: When to Seek Help We all go through hardships in life, and most days have their ups and downs. But there are times we may need some extra help to overcome a tough season. Let’s take a look at some common struggles that show it’s time to pursue counseling.

Healthy vs. Unhealthy Struggles

Struggles come and go, even with the healthiest lives and family dynamics. Healthy people find a way to move forward through their struggles, and there’s a natural process of personal growth that takes place in their lives when they do so.

When problems don’t go away, it may be a sign of something unhealthy in the person or family situation. When people sweep their struggles under a rug and pretend like they aren’t there, it’s a sign that resolution can’t be found – as a result people often end up being disconnected from others. If you find yourself with struggles that don’t go away or seem to snowball into greater conflict, it may be time to seek counseling.

Is Counseling For You? A Quick Self-Assessment There are many reasons why people come to counseling. You don’t need to be at the end of your rope before seeking help. It’s better to come into counseling early before a problem escalates and builds. The same is true for your physical health; the earlier a health concern is treated, the quicker the healing process. You may be asking, “do I really need counseling?” To help determine if counseling is for you, consider your answers to the following questions:

• Are your struggles impacting your day-to-day life?

• Do they negatively impact your work, relationships, or daily functioning? • Have your struggles continued for a long time with no improvement?

• Is the issue or conflict getting worse?

• Have you self-harmed or had suicidal or homicidal thoughts within the last six months? • Have you experienced a severe trauma?

Crosswinds offers several different options for our counseling and coaching services. From traditional counseling to a text-based option, we provide different forms of communication with your counselor so you can get the help you need when and where you need it.

Counseling vs. Coaching

At Crosswinds, you can choose from either counseling or coaching. But what’s the difference between the two? Counselors usually help their clients look backward, into the past, and heal from past trauma’s or hurts in order to help improve the future. Coaches, on the other hand, generally help people to look ahead and move forward intentionally. Coaches usually assist clients in achieving their own personal goals, such as increasing personal skills, enhancing relationships, or developing a career.

Forms of Communication Available for Counseling and Coaching

Traditional, In-Office Counseling and Coaching

Traditional counseling and coaching takes place in our offices across the state of Indiana. This is the most common therapy option that our clients choose. Our therapists and coaches will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, work with you to create a plan, and help you to move forward in healthy living. In-Home Counseling and Coaching

Crosswinds also gives clients the unique option of meeting with their counselors or coaches in their own home. This helps eliminate the commute to our office, allows our therapists to get to know you in a new way, and allows for more privacy - you won’t have to sit in a waiting room, but can instead sit in the comfort of your own home.

While anyone can benefit from in-home counseling and coaching, it has especially helped our clients who struggle with something in their house. For example, it can be beneficial for people who struggle with an eating disorder, hoarding, agoraphobia, or disability. Online Counseling and Coaching

Our online counselors and coaches meet with their clients face-to-face through video calls. Many people have benefitted from this mode of therapy. It eliminates the commute to a counseling office, saving time and money, but still includes face-to-face interaction. Another advantage is that online sessions can cater to the needs of people who struggle with things like frequent panic attacks or leaving the house.

Text Counseling and Coaching

We offer our text counseling and coaching services through an app that you can download on your phone, tablet, or computer. Once you download the app, you can send messages to your therapist throughout the day. Your therapist will reply to your texts at two different times each day, five days a week, as needed. This style of counseling and coaching can be very beneficial for some but is not a good fit for everyone.

• Who is a Good Fit?

Our texting program is a good fit for people who struggle to find an hour or more to come into the office for counseling. Our clients are able to remain anonymous and this often gives them the courage to open up more fully. Because clients have more frequent access to their counselor or coach, they are able to get intervention sooner than the more traditional forms of counseling.

• Who is Not a Good Fit?

Our text counseling service is currently only offered for individual clients and cannot be offered to minors. We generally try to avoid high risk clients participating in our text counseling, as we believe in-person counseling is a better fit for those who may be having intense suicidal or homicidal thoughts, frequent self-harm, psychotic behavior, or severely intense trauma.

• Text Counseling Packages

We offer several different packages alongside the text-based counseling option. You can choose to add a weekly or monthly 30-minute video call to your texting plan. If you prefer, you can elect to replace the video call with live texting, where your therapist or coach will be immediately available to answer questions.

There are many ways Crosswinds counseling stands out from other counseling programs in our region and state. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of receiving professional coaching or counseling through Crosswinds.

1. 24/7 Admissions Team and Quick

Turnaround Time

At Crosswinds, we pride ourselves on getting our clients into counseling quickly. Our admissions team is available 24/7, to help people determine if counseling is right for them. We are also able to enroll someone in our counseling programs quickly if needed, usually scheduling a session within 24 hours. Our text counseling requires our clients to fill out some additional paperwork, but once that’s completed, we can start counseling within 24 hours of applying. And, we are usually able to start in-home counseling within 24 to 48 hours.

2. Flexible Scheduling & Ways to Meet We book appointments around your schedule, in whatever form works best for you. Each of our services cater to the different needs of our clients and help to eliminate the barriers – like sitting in a waiting room, a long commute, privacy concerns, or difficult schedules – that

can sometimes keep people from getting the help they deserve. Crosswinds counseling and coaching is designed to meet you where you are, when you need us, whatever that looks like in your life.

3. Qualified Providers

At Crosswinds, we have a highly-trained staff across three regions in Indiana ready to meet with

you in person, as well as an e-counseling team skilled in video conferencing therapy. All of our

therapists are licensed and hold at least a master’s degree in their field. Our staff is made up of

both male and female therapists, so you can meet with whichever would make you most

comfortable. Every Crosswinds therapist is here to help support you and address your mental

health struggles or other concerns.

We also have several coaches on staff who are available for accountability and support. Each

staff coach holds at least a bachelor’s degree in a mental health or social work field. Coaching is

a good fit for those who are already functional but want help to grow and move forward in a

specific area such as career development, spiritual growth, relationship enhancement, or life

changes.

4. Faith

We are a Christian counseling center, so we are able to integrate biblical truth and Christian principles into our counseling sessions when appropriate. Faith is important to us. Not only are our therapists and coaches mental-health experts, they are also strong spiritually. This is one of the things we hear the most positive feedback from our clients about. When a client is open to it, we integrate biblical truths in various ways, such as:

• Incorporating prayer • Reading Scripture together

• Encouraging involvement with a church group • Giving biblical answers to purpose of life questions

• Giving biblical strategies and scriptures that are helpful for clients coping with depression, anxiety, stress, family conflict, etc.

5. Integrating Others into Counseling Sessions

When most people think of counseling, they imagine a person sitting one-on-one with a therapist, or sitting with their spouse for relationship counseling. But at Crosswinds, we believe that healing often includes more than just one or two people. It includes your support system – however you define family. If our clients are open and willing, we encourage them to invite a friend, loved one or multiple family members to their session. For example, a client can bring in a loved one to disclose past trauma, share how they can be best supported, help set up boundaries, walk through forgiveness, or get relationship help At times, if a client signs release forms, a counselor can reach out to their client’s support person through phone or email to learn more. This insight can help healing to happen more quickly.

Section 7: Counseling Onboarding Process

If you’re interested in signing up for counseling, there are many ways to start the process. You can send a text to 260-238-8939, call 877-328-5067, fill out an online form here, or send an email to [email protected]. You’ll be put in contact with an admissions coordinator, who will answer your questions and help fit you with the right counselor or coach. You’ll be asked questions about: why you want counseling, what you need from counseling, what your provider preferences are (male/female, older/younger), your location, and your availability. You’ll also get to choose between in-person and online counseling. We have counselors that are available to meet you in your home, in our office, online, or through text. Once you’ve answered these questions, you’ll be sent some electronic paperwork to return. We will then match you with the provider that is the best fit for you. Once you are matched with a provider, they will contact you and set up your first appointment. If you are in need of immediate counseling, we are generally able to set up your first session within 24 hours of your call.

First Few Counseling Sessions

During your first counseling session, your therapist will go over general paperwork such as privacy and confidentiality information. Your counselor or coach may also have you fill out a self-assessment to help provide them with background information on you and to let them know your areas of concern. Your therapist will use this guidance along with the first few sessions to get to know you. They will then create a treatment plan for you which they will bring to your 3rd or 4th session to discuss with you. Our treatment plans are goal-oriented and include both long- and short-term goals, so you will always know what you’re working towards. Once you and your therapist agree on a plan, your ongoing treatment and counseling sessions will begin.

Ongoing Treatment The length of treatment depends on how well you respond to counseling and the struggles you’re working through. A lot of people start showing good progress after 3 months of counseling. A fair amount of people need 6 months in counseling – sometimes they need years depending on what they’re working on. During this time, you’ll be working on the goals that were set in your treatment plan. The treatment plan may get revised from time to time depending on what comes up during your sessions. Usually people start with weekly counseling sessions and as they progress, they move to biweekly sessions, monthly sessions, and then they “graduate.”

Completion of Counseling

Once you have reached your goals, your counselor will spend at least one session talking about the growth you’ve experienced and will help you create an aftercare plan. This plan will help you continue to practice the good habits you’ve put in place while in counseling. They will also let you know the red flags to look for if you ever need support again. Finally, it’s time for goodbyes. You’ve done the hard work of counseling and now it’s time to continue the positive changes you’ve started.
