IMPORTANT NOTICE: BALING TWINE IN CERTIFIED FEED

Organic certifiers recently identified cases of twine-contaminated feed as part of the National Organic Program residue testing program. Both silage and dry hay crops were contaminated by o-phenylphenol, a preservative used in jute twine. Contamination can occur when twine is chopped into feed or its residue leaches into organic hay.

There is currently no clear alternative on the market. Without clear industry guidance, it is important to discuss with your certifier how you use baling twine and to develop a plan to keep contaminants out of your organic feed.

Questions? Contact CROPP’s Certification team through the Farmer Hotline, 888-809-9297.
