Theodore Roosevelt Middle School Welcomes Mr. Turry Flucker and Mrs. Leona Tate January 21, 2011 Theodore Roosevelt Middle School In Partnership With Louisiana Center for Civil Rights and Social Justice On January 21, 2011, Mr. Turry Flucker, Project Director, Louisiana Center for Civil Rights and Social Justice, Louisiana State Museum, and Ms. Leona Tate, one of the first four African American children to integrate Louisiana Schools in 1960, visited Roosevelt Middle School to discuss the Civil Rights Movement in New Orleans. Louisiana Center for Civil Rights and Social Justice OUR MISSION To achieve our vision, The Center's mission is to use the Louisiana civil rights experience to heal, educate, celebrate and engage for social justice. On November 14, 1960, I innocently entered into the civil rights movement at the tender age of six, along with two other courageous young girls. We were escorted to school by our brave parents and federal marshals. My classmates and I were going to be the first black students to enter McDonough #19 Elementary Public School (later renamed Louis Armstrong).
