The Cracow DragonIf you visit wawel castle you can't miss the flame-blowing dragon in front of it, or the cave it's guarding. But how did Krakow get this most magical of mascots? Read the whole story of a deadly dragon and the brave young man who vanquished him.

It was some hundred years ago in the time of Prince Crac - the

legendary founder of the city of Cracow

Dawno, dawno temu, za czasów panowania Księcia

Kraka - legendarnego założyciela miasta Krakowa.

Page 3: Then many courageous knights had lost their lifes

Virgins permanently disappeared from Cracow and really nobody knew

exactly what had happened with them.

Nieustannie znikały młode dziewczynę, a nikt z Krakowian nie

wiedział, co się z nimi stało

But one day the Cracow inhabitants found out

that a fire-breathing and dangerous dragon lived

under the Wawel Hill in a dark den

And as you can imagine Prince Crac said: "Whoever kills this dragon, will marry

my beautiful daughter!„

Książę Krak zatem ogłosił: "Kto zabije smoka, dostanie ode mnie pół

królestwa i moja córkę za żonę".

Wielu dzielnych rycerzy stawało do walki z smokiem. Żadnemu jednak nie

udało się mu pokonać.

Page 7: Then many courageous knights had lost their lifes

Up to the time a young shoemaker came along, and he had a good idea.

W końcu młody szewczyk wpadł na wspaniały pomysł!

Page 8: Then many courageous knights had lost their lifes

He took a sheep fur, filled it with pitch and sulphur,

sewed it up and laid this false sheep in front of the

dragon's cave.

Wypchał skórę owcy siarką i podrzucił pod pieczarę smoka.

The dragon was hungry, rushed immediately at it and devoured it greedily.

Głodny potwór zobaczywszy smakowitą owieczkę nie zastanawiał się długo - pożarł ją jednym tchem.

Page 10: Then many courageous knights had lost their lifes

Very soon the dragon became incredibly thirsty because of the pitch and

sulphur burning in his throat and belly. For this

reason the dragon ran fast to the Vistula shore and began to drink a lot of

Vistula water. Zaraz potem poczuł pieczenie w

brzuchu. Z każdą chwilą piekło go coraz bardziej. Spragniony pobiegł na

brzeg Wisły i począł łapczywie pić wodę z rzeki. Wypił jeden łyk, drugi,

trzeci, ale ciągle nie mógł ugasić pragnienia.

Page 11: Then many courageous knights had lost their lifes

And the dragon drank so much water that he finally burst with a loud bang. In

this way the city of Cracow was freed from the evil

Wawel Dragon.

Pił więc dalej, pił, aż pękł! Miasto zostało uwolnione od straszliwego

smoka.

And as you can imagine the shoemaker got his

promised reward - he married the daughter of

Prince Crac.

Szewczyk otrzymał od króla obiecaną nagrodę i poślubił jego córkę
