Adventists in Poso, CentralSulawesi, Indonesia, alerted policeafter discovering a bomb at theirchurch entrance on January 13. Anexplosives specialist deactivated thebomb, which police say could havebeen detonated by a cellular phone.Officials added that leads point to aMuslim extremist group.

The Poso Adventist Church, thesecond one to be built, has a mem-bership of 100, down significantlyfrom the 200 original members whenthe feud between Muslims and

Christians flared up six years ago. Theprevious Poso church was amongfour other Adventist churches in thearea burned down by extremists inthe past few years. Church leaders inthe area say the attacks do not specifi-cally target Adventist churches, butChristian churches in general.

“Members of that church are

again on red alert,” said ErenstSahensolar, president of the AdventistChurch in Central Sulawesi. “It is notsafe and easy now worshipping Godin any place.”

“This [isn’t] the only bomb incidentthat happened [in that area],” addedMoldy Mambu, associate treasurer ofthe Southern Asia-Pacific Division. Five

For Those Who Lead“Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken theword of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the out-come of their conduct” (Hebrews 13:7).

It’s the most common of human signs, and in the church,one of the most troubling.We shrug our shoulders, roll our eyes, and say with

gentle sarcasm, “But what can you expect of leadership?”It’s a line good for a momentary laugh as we forge a fleet-ing bond with some other believer by diminishing thosewho have been called to lead God’s church. “We,” who pre-tend to be the great unvoiced, unheard congregation,describe ourselves as helpless to overcome the faults andfoibles in those we have elected.

Whether the leaders we are criticizing are in our localcongregation, our region, or the General Conference, wefind it tempting to catalog their mistakes and inefficienciesas though we had no more responsibility toward them than

we do toward the mail carrier or the market owner. Indeed,in many instances, we speak more kindly of the nonbeliev-ers, hoping they may yet turn to faith. In some way, aleader has failed to meet our expectations, and in our dis-appointment, we turn to the closest words at hand—usual-ly words that someone once used about us. “Arrogant,” wesay, or “foolish”; “wasteful,” or “unapproachable.” Ourwords become the painful and costly leveler of the churchby which we “bring our leaders down to earth”—and thusreduce our claim upon the promises of heaven.

There is another way, one filled with grace and innerquietness. The love of Christ can train our hearts andtongues to speak well of even things we don’t fully under-stand, to be patient until we know more than our frac-tional share of truth. The apostle urged us to “rememberthose who rule over you”—not because they are in dangerof being forgotten as leaders, but because believers are indanger of forgetting to pray for them. Christ can set Hischurch straight and make all things right when He findshumble hearts in both followers and leaders.

This month, remember to pray for the leaders whoserve and speak the Word of God to you. Your followingof Jesus will be all the better for it.

ZAMBIA: Fifteen Baptized in RemoteDistrict

Some 200 people attended evangel-istic meetings and 15 were baptized inZambia’s remote Chisomo Valley thispast summer.

Located in the Serenje District,Chisomo Valley presents transporta-tion challenges to those wishing tovisit the area. Motor vehicles arescarce, so most people travel there onfoot, covering a distance of about 90kilometers (56 miles) from the near-est towns and villages. Residents ofChisomo walk three days one way tosell reed mats, chickens, and otheritems to earn a living. Because ofextremes in weather that cause flood-ing and drought, food production islow, so hunger is rampant.

The Adventist Church had longbeen planning ways to take the gospelmessage to Chisomo, but many barri-ers deterred those efforts. Then DavidHanzala, a worker for the area’sDepartment of Health, district pastorRichard Chiluya, and retired pastorEdward Tuyu Mpolamaunga decidedto meet the challenge.

Organizing a series of meetingsusing the theme “The Bible Speaks,”Hanzala, Chiluya, and Mpolamaunga

visited the local tribal chief, who wel-comed the meetings to the area. Wordof the series spread, and some 200people came to the first meeting.

“The attendance was impressive,and the number kept increasing,”said Chiluya.

By the end of the series, 15 peoplewere baptized in the nearbyLukusashi River.—Zambia Union/AR.

VIETNAM: State Grants AdventistsCertificate of Religious Practice

After more than 30 years of seekingofficial recognition of religious activi-ty, Adventists in Vietnam are nowworshipping freely.

In late December 2006, Vietnam’sCommittee for Religious Affairs offi-cially granted certificates of religiouspractice to Adventists, Baptists, andother religious groups, reportsVietnam’s Thanh Nien News. The certi-fication guarantees religious groups the right to favorable conditionsfor religious practice, freedom toprint and distribute literature, theright to build and upgrade placesof worship, and the legal leewayto organize meetings, seminars,and other religious events.

WALES: New Company Organized inWest Wales

Adventist church leaders and localmembers in Pontargothi, Wales,United Kingdom, officially organizeda new church company on January 20.Some 27 people were present for theevent, and Welsh Mission presidentJohn C. Surridge and district pastorMichael Logan led out in the service.

The number of Adventist membersin this isolated region of western Waleshas steadily increased during the past15 years. A local facility that seatsmore than 100 people, PontargothiMemorial Hall, was rented to accom-modate the growing congregation.

Although Pontargothi is centrallylocated for the members, for some itstill means a two-hour journey toattend church.

“It’s not too bad,” says LibbyGoodman, who serves as treasurer for thecompany.“Unless you get behind traffic,that is; then it can take a bit longer.”

Elisabeth Williams, leader of thenewly formed group, says she is grate-ful for how the Lord has blessed thenew company, and looks forward towhen it will become a “fully-fledgedchurch.”—British Union ConferenceCommunication Department/AR.

During the drama’s finale on Sabbath evening, 6,000Pathfinders crossed the threshold on stage through TheTwelfth Gate, and were greeted by angels and “Jesus Himself.”

During the closing ceremony, keynote speaker José V.Rojas, director of Adventist Volunteer Ministries in NorthAmerica, urged Pathfinders to “testify to everyone whatyou have learned and seen at this camporee.”

“My favorite part of the camporee was attending theworship at night,” said Fern Napwatt of the PortorokiPathfinder Club in Vanuatu. “Pastor Rojas was funny andspoke straight to the point. I have learned about Jesusmore and gotten closer to Him at this camporee.”

Fourteen countries throughout the South Pacific wererepresented at the camporee, including Australia, NewZealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Vanuatu, and theSolomon Islands.

More than 6,000 Pathfinders throughout the South Pacificgathered in Australia to attend the first-ever South

Pacific Division (SPD) Pathfinder Camporee in early January.An initiative of the division’s Adventist Youth Ministries, thecamporee took place at the Seventh-day Adventist ConventionCentre in Stuarts Point, New South Wales, Australia.

“This is the first time we have organized something onsuch a grand scale for our Pathfinders,” says Gilbert R.Cangy, director of SPD’s Adventist Youth Ministries. “Andit [was] an unforgettable experience that will remain in thememories of all the campers for a long time to come.”

Themed “The Twelfth Gate,” camporee activities werebased on heaven. Pathfinders entered “heaven” when theyfirst crossed the gates into the campground, and a groupof “angels” welcomed them. They were divided into 10separate sub-camps identified by gems found in heaven,and campground streets took on names such asRedemption’s Walk and Love Street.

Pathfinders participated in a variety of activities on thebeach, in the lake, and in bush areas. These included obsta-cle courses and games constructed largely on site by volun-teers and youth workers during a grueling two weeks.

“My favourite activity was The Lost Gate because itallowed me to work with other people,” said PathfinderMichael Tunai from Samoa.

The Lost Gate, an obstacle course, was the biggest con-struction project completed for the camporee. It consistedof six circuits and 80 different elements.

The centerpiece of the camporee was the evening pro-gram, during which actors treated Pathfinders to a dramatitled Threshold. Based on an original script written byAustralian Union Conference Youth Ministries directorAnthony W. Knight, the six-act drama was performed on asplit-level stage 16 meters (52 feet) high and 30 meters (98feet) wide. Threshold focused on both the heavenly andearthly realms, depicting five children who met an angelsent to minister to them at a playground.

Pausing a moment before applyingthe surgical instrument to his

patient, 39-year-old GuillaumeMulenga bows his head in prayer,asking God to bless the eye proce-dure he is about to perform.Assistants stand nearby, ready to aidMulenga at a moment’s notice. Thedelicate operation to remove anolder man’s cataracts begins, and bythe next day the patient exclaims, “Ican see! I can see again.”

Cataract and other eye surgeriesare commonplace in many regions inthe world, but in Djibouti, a smallcountry of some 800,000 people inthe Horn of eastern Africa, qualifieddoctors and other health profession-als are scarce. The poor are especiallyvulnerable to disease and otherhealth risks because of the lack ofquality care available to them. But itis here, in the poorest area ofDjibouti’s capital, the city ofDjibouti, that the Adventist Churchhas established a health clinic thatoffers eye and dental care. It alsooperates an English language schoolwithin the same facility.

What makes the eye clinic heredifferent from most is that Mulenga,who has successfully performed hun-dreds of surgical procedures during

the past 10 years, is notactually a trained sur-geon—but an ophthal-mologist nurse who is licensed in Djibouti to perform eye surgeries.Many say he “has the gift of healing”and that “God is using him” in theabsence of specialized medical doc-tors. His assistants have no educationpast the secondary level, but Mulengahas trained them. And his surgicalsuccess rate has been exemplary.

In 1994 the local governmentprovided land in the poorest regionof the city on which the AdventistChurch could open a health clinic.The government is now urging thechurch to launch another clinic inan affluent section of the communi-ty. They have offered to provide theland for free.

During a recent visit to theDjibouti clinic, I scrubbed up,donned a hospital gown, andobserved Mulenga at work. It was alife-changing experience to seepatients who had been completelyblind for two or more years beingled into the operating theater, andthen rejoicing the next day becausethey are able to see again.

The guard who monitors theclients crowding the facility and

keeps a watchful eye on the premiseswas once himself totally blind untilMulenga operated on him. Now heexpresses his gratitude by serving ina security position at the clinic.

Mulenga, a Congolese, and histeam have frequently been featuredon national television transportingequipment to refugee camps andother poverty-stricken areas to pro-vide free surgeries and other treat-ments. He allocates one or two daysa week for such outreach activities.As the son of a pastor, Mulenga alsoserves as head elder of theDjiboutian Adventist congregation.He and his wife, Alphonize, havethree young children.

Mulenga says his greatest desireis to attend medical school tobecome a fully qualified ophthal-mologist, but with a monthlyincome of less than US$500 and afamily to support, his chances ofrealizing that dream appear bleak.But he trusts God for his future, andin the meantime he helps those hecan and continues to make a differ-ence in the lives of the poor inDjibouti.

Considered by many to be the birthplace of civiliza-tion, Egypt was one of the most sophisticated cul-tures of the ancient world. For more than 2,000

years Egyptians ruled the Nile River Valley, making theirsone of the world’s longest-lived dynasties. Egypt is hometo some of history’s greatest marvels, including the pyra-mids and Great Sphinx of Giza and the Valley of the Kings.

Egypt is situated along the Mediterranean Sea on thenortheast corner of Africa, and extends to the SinaiPeninsula. Egypt’s strategic location, along with control ofthe Suez Canal, the 100-mile waterway between theMediterranean and the Red Sea, affords it control of landand water traffic between two continents.

Known in the ancient world as “black land” for the black,rich soil deposited by the annual flooding of the Nile River,Egypt has survived because of the river. Today nearly 99 per-cent of Egyptians live along the Nile Valley Delta or the SuezCanal, an area of only 4 percent of the country’s geography.Most of the rest of the nation is dry, desolate desert.

Egypt was a cultural and intellectual center of theancient world. Egyptian hieroglyphics exhibit early forms ofwriting and mathematics. During the Hellenistic era, Jewishscholars in Alexandria produced the Greek translation ofthe Old Testament, known as the Septuagint. Alexandrianastronomers developed the 365-day calendar used today.

Most Egyptians consider themselves Arabs. Howeverover the centuries other nations have invaded Egypt, andtheir peoples have intermarried. Many Egyptians are ableto trace their roots back to Persians, Turks, Ethiopians,Greeks, and Europeans.

According to tradition, Mark, the writer of the Gospel thatbears his name, brought Christianity to the country in the firstcentury A.D. The Coptic Orthodox Christian Church, alsoknown as the Church of Egypt, survives to this day, practicedby 9 percent of the population. Nearly 50 million peopleworldwide consider themselves Coptic Christians. In A.D. 639Islam came to Egypt, carried by invading Sunni Arabs. Today

sent the French paper Signes des Temps (Signs of the Times)to some Italian friends in Alexandria. This became the firstAdventist contact in the Middle East. A year laterRomualdo Bartola, a self-supporting missionary and trav-eling businessman, visited Alexandria. His efforts resultedin seven baptisms, and a small Adventist group startedmeeting. The church grew slowly. At the beginning of 1912there were only 18 known Adventists in Egypt. But laterthat year George Keough, an Irish missionary, learned thata group of 24 Sabbathkeepers were worshipping in south-ern Egypt. He visited them and organized the firstAdventist Church made up of Egyptians. Other congrega-tions at the time were made up mostly of Europeans livingin Egypt. Today some 800 Adventists live in Egypt.Although Adventists are free to practice their faith inEgypt, local laws make it hard for the church to grow.

Maran: Many estimates sug-gest that 70 percent of themembership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church isfemale. Do you think theworld church adequatelyacknowledges the contribu-tions of women in its overallmission?Paulsen: No, I don’t thinkso. The \work of women inour church is more exten-

sive in some cultures and in someparts of our world than in others. Itmay surprise many, but in Africa, forexample, there is a huge engagementof women in ministry. They runevangelistic series and are publiclyengaged on a large scale—in commu-nity services, in the teaching profes-sion, and in proclaiming the Word.

Would you say the traditional rolesassigned to women have at times rele-gated them to bystander status? And if so,what would you see as a more egalitari-an approach in church?

You know, none of us can stepfully out of our culture. And it isn’tvery helpful for me, from a Westernperspective, to look at another cul-ture and to prescribe how theyshould address these issues. In thechurch, everyone has to ask himselfor herself, “How can I most faithfullyserve God where I am? How can thatbest be expressed here?”

I accept there are some culturesin which women are not trustedwith the same responsibilities as inother parts of the world. It’s a cul-tural issue, and it will also affect thechurch. But I think the churchshould be a mover—even in theseplaces—to lift the value of women.The church can and should be at theforefront of encouraging society totrust women with greater responsi-bilities and leadership.

That leads me to the next question.Should the church consider some methodto ensure that women are more propor-tionally represented in church structureand leadership in ministry?

I understand what you are asking,and I want to remind you that someof these processes are slow. As youknow, at the 2005 GeneralConference session in St. Louis webrought three women into officerpositions here at the GeneralConference. It was done deliberately,with the intention to make a state-ment. But at the same time we madesure that the ones who were broughtin weren’t merely symbolic individu-als. They are professionals who areevery bit as competent as a malecounterpart would be for the tasksthey are entrusted with.

On the boards of our education-al and health care institutions wehave, generally speaking, a goodrepresentation of women. Where weare very short of female representa-tion is on boards and committees ofthe church structures: the GeneralConference Executive Committeeand the conference and divisionexecutive committees.

Improvement will come only ifwe are proactive. It’s not always easyto find available individuals—womenwho have had some experience in aleadership role in a decision-makingforum of the church and who alsohave the time available to attendmeetings. I have said many times tomy colleagues in leadership aroundthe world that we have to make aspecial effort. There are women,probably a considerable number ofthem, who are saying, “Look, I’m aprofessional person. I have my work,but I also want to do this. I’m pre-pared to make that personal sacrificein order to be involved in a forum

that makes key decisions for thechurch.” We need to be focused aboutfinding these people. It’s not going tohappen by itself.

Your recent conversation with women—“Time to Talk”—which was broadcast onthe Hope Channel, has prompted a num-ber of responses from our readers. Onereader from Nigeria, for example, isexcited about the possibilities openingup in his church for women in ministry.

I’m delighted when I hear thatmind-sets are changing and newopportunities are opening up forwomen. Many years ago while I waspresident of Newbold College, awoman—a staff member—preachedat the college church. She preached awonderful message. One of the menwho shook my hand at the door as Iwent out, said, “How could you sitthere and let her, as a woman,preach?”

This mind-set is changing in ourchurch. Women are gifted and havecapabilities that should flow into thevarious ministries of the church. Let usdiscover how the Spirit is leading them.

A second letter describes an experiencethat saddened our reader. He recounts arecent decision at his church in NorthAmerica to exclude women from sayingprayer during the worship service.

That is unacceptable. It does notreflect the view held by the widerchurch. You don’t have to be electedto a position to lead out, or to pray,or to announce the hymn, or toreceive the offering. There is also noteaching of the church that shouldprevent a woman from being electedinto a leadership role in the localchurch. In many churches, as youknow, we have women who are elect-ed elders. They do a wonderful job,and why should they not? This goesback many years. In the small churchin north Norway where I grew up, 50

to 60 years ago, we had a woman aselder at the local church, and we hada woman as the only elder in the localchurch. It works. It works well.

What should the church be saying to itsfemale members, particularly about theopportunities to serve in leadershiproles, for which the Spirit has givenwomen gifts?

The church shouldencourage women tomake professional ch-oices that will lead theminto some areas of serviceor ministry. I know thefullest kind of recogni-tion to pastoral min-istry—ordination—is adirection the church hassaid, on at least two dif-ferent occasions when wehave met together as aworld body, “This is notthe way we can go now.”But I would still encour-age women to train forministry. There is a wide spec-trum of ministries open towomen: in the local churchpastorate, in evangelism, andin a variety of educationaland institutional services.

In many cultureswomen are alreadyemployed to a considerable extent in local pastoral ministry.And when they are employed in thiscapacity, we don’t intend to differen-tiate in pay—they carry the responsi-bility of the church pastor and theyare to be paid as the church pastor.

As a college teacher, 30 to 35 yearsago, I was privileged to teach womenwho were preparing for the ministry.My own niece trained as a minister.She has a young family now and that,in some ways, impacts how she is ableto function. But for several years she

was the pastor of a local church. Ihave heard her preach and have beenblessed by the wonderful way inwhich she communicates.

So I would say to women, get pro-fessional qualification, let the Spiritflow through you and your talents,energies, and creative initiatives, andlet the church benefit from your call-ing and your skills.

What is the best exercise, and howmuch should I do?

The best exercise is the one you actu-ally do on a regular basis! There are

three general types of exercise:Aerobic or enduranceFlexibility or stretchingStrength-building (weights and

resistance)Although all forms are important,

aerobic exercise is highly recommend-ed. Walking is an excellent form ofexercise, and one should walk brisklyfor 30-45 minutes most days of theweek. For the best health benefits, up to90 minutes per day is recommended.

The exercise time can be dividedup into two or three sessions over the24-hour period. A simple way ofmeasuring the amount of walkingyou do each day is to use a pedometer(a small measuring device worn onthe belt/waist). One should strive towalk 10,000 steps per day to enjoy thebest health. Don’t be frightened bythese goals. Press on!

“But those who wait on the Lordshall renew their strength;…they shallrun and not be weary, they shall walkand not faint” (Isa. 40:31).

changes are continued. Any changesin medications should be made by thetreating physician.

Regular exercise appears todecrease the risk for certain cancers.The evidence is most convincing forbreast and colon cancer; it is thoughtthat exercise may also decrease theoccurrence of prostate, lung, and uter-ine (womb) cancers. This benefit ofexercise may be partly because physi-cal activity helps to reduce weight, andexcess weight is a risk for cancer.

Regular exercise is good for you onlyif you do it! It is never too late to start.

It is difficult to stay motivated andexercise regularly. I know of thephysical benefits; are there perhapsany advantages other than physicalthat may encourage me to continueexercising?

Regular exercise not only energizesthe body, but also gives one a feeling

of well-being. This is associated with agenerally better quality of life both phys-ically and mentally. Exercise helps toreduce stress, anxiety, and depression.Some of these effects are due to certainchemicals produced by the body (withexercise) called endorphins. These sub-stances help to elevate the mood.

Exercise improves mental func-tion. Exercise may delay the onset ofAlzheimer’s disease in individualswho may be prone to this disease, andalso decrease the worsening symp-toms of Alzheimer’s. Measurableimprovements in memory have beendemonstrated after 9 to 10 weeks ofregular aerobic exercise.

These additional benefits of regu-lar exercise should help keep youmotivated. Keep at it—it’s worth it!

I am 55 years old and have never had aregular exercise program. What are thebenefits of exercise, and will I benefitstarting at this later stage of my life?

Exercise has been shown to be ben-eficial at all ages. It is important to

seek advice from your health-careprovider (physician) regarding thekind of exercise suited to your presenthealth condition. You will need direc-tion as to what is the best exercise foryou and how much you should do asyou start out on such a program.

Regular exercise helps keep usenergized, and is also important inhelping to prevent and aid in thetreatment of certain diseases. Exercisecan help to lower hypertension (highblood pressure). This is especially trueof aerobic exercise (such as walking,running, jogging, and swimming).Individuals who have moderatehypertension may additionally needmedications in order to achieve thebest blood pressure control.

Regular exercise helps to strength-en bones. Exercise can help toincrease the healthy or high densitylipoprotein cholesterol (HDL).Individuals who exercise regularlyhave less chance of developing type 2diabetes in adult life. In those patientswho already have this disease, exercisecan help control or even reverse thediabetes, as long as the lifestyle

As we near the end of the world,should we as members of the

remnant talk about spiritualrevival? Is spiritual revival somethingneeded among church leaders, work-ers, and members? Is it relevant orirrelevant to focus our energies andresources on how to bring about spir-itual revival?

In the book of Ezra there is a callfor revival. Why? What was the setting?

The Israelites were in Babyloniancaptivity. They were there becausethey had transgressed God’s law.Obedient to God’s law, they werestronger than the other nations; butas soon as they forsook God, thereverse happened. They becameweaker than the surrounding nations,were taken by King Nebuchadnezzarinto Babylonian captivity, andbecame exposed to the evil teachingsand practices of Babylon.

During their 70 years of captivity,most of the Israelites came to accept thelifestyle of Babylon as normal, and for-got the life of devotion and strict obedi-ence to the God of their fathers. Theystarted building houses and even mar-rying the daughters of Babylon. “Whenthese things were done,” Ezra says, “the

leaders came to me, saying, ‘The peopleof Israel and the priests and the Leviteshave not separated themselves from thepeoples of the lands, with respect to theabominations of the Canaanites, theHittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites,the Ammonites, the Moabites, theEgyptians, and the Amorites. For theyhave taken some of their daughters aswives for themselves and their sons, sothat the holy seed is mixed with thepeoples of those lands. Indeed, thehand of the leaders and rulers has beenforemost in this trespass’” (Ezra 9:1, 2).

Ezra’s time is distant, but the prac-tices of his day are close to us. Howmany of us Christians still supportour children marrying outside thechurch, despite Paul’s counsel that we“not be unequally yoked together withunbelievers” (2 Cor. 6:14)? How manyof us leaders still pose ourselves as ifwe are rulers of this world? Howmany of us still fight for positions inthe church as if this was the mostimportant thing to have in this world?We have somehow been “mixed withthe peoples of the lands,” just as dur-ing the time of the prophet Ezra.

It is interesting to note thataccording to the last part of Ezra 9:2,

“the hand of the leaders and rulers[had] been foremost in this trespass.”Could this be true of church leaderstoday? Are we not immune to suchevil practices?

Jesus said in Matthew 7:21-23:“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord,Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom ofheaven, but he who does the will ofMy Father in heaven. Many will say toMe in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have wenot prophesied in Your name, castout demons in Your name…?’ And

then I will declare to them, ‘I neverknew you; depart from Me, you whopractice lawlessness!’”

Many Had Settled DownEzra was astonished by the unwill-

ingness of the majority of the peopleto return to Jerusalem. The time hadcome to return as God had said, butmost of the Israelites had becomecomfortable in their captivity. Ezra9:5, 6 shows the spiritual strugglesEzra went through in trying to correctthe situation: “At the evening sacrificeI arose from my fasting; and having

torn my garment and my robe, I fellon my knees and spread out my handsto the Lord my God. And I said: ‘Omy God, I am too ashamed andhumiliated to lift up my face to You,my God; for our iniquities have risenhigher than our heads, and our guilthas grown up to the heavens.’”

Ezra prayed to God not only for theforgiveness of his own sins, but also forthe sins of his people. We should learnto pray like Ezra—not only for our-selves, but for the flocks assigned to us.

As a result of Ezra’s spiritualstruggles and commitment to God,some people decided to follow him—a small group decided to return toJerusalem with him. And we find evi-dence of repentance and revival. Ezra9:8 says: “And now for a little whilegrace has been shown from the Lordour God, to leave us a remnant toescape, and to give us a peg in Hisholy place, that our God may enlight-en our eyes and give us a measure ofrevival in our bondage.”

Donald A. McGavran, regarded bysome as the father of the church

growth movement in contemporaryChristianity, says that “two principalpreconditions of revival … are prayerand feeding on God’s Word.”1 Let usbriefly consider these two.

1. Prayer. How does prayer bringabout revival? According toMcGavran, “Revival is God’s gift.Human beings can neither commandit nor make God grant it. God sover-eignly gives revival when and whereHe wills. It ‘breaks out,’ ‘strikes,’‘quickens a church,’ ‘comes with thesuddenness of a summer storm,’‘makes its appearances,’ ‘inaugurates a

work of grace,’ and ‘blesses his peo-ple.’ But God responds to sincere con-tinued prayer…. ‘Ask and it will begiven to you, seek and you will find,knock and it will be opened to you.’”2

God is willing to bring about revivalin our church—in both members andleaders, if we earnestly pray for it.

2. God’s Word. Feeding on God’sWord is the second precondition ofrevival. According to McGavran,knowledge of the Bible does notalways lead to revival. But without it,revival in the classic sense does notusually occur. Historically, he says, acareful study of the Word has alwayspreceded revival, as, for example, inEurope and America. The Koreanrevival of the twentieth century owedmuch of its power, he says, “to thethorough Bible study that formed anintegral part of the PresbyterianChurch’s regimen from the days of itsinception in 1895.”3

We should not minimize thepower a person can derive from theproper and consistent study ofGod’s Word. The Bible student does

not remain the same. The Word ofGod impacts the life. Jesus said: “Thewords that I speak to you are spirit,and they are life” (John 6:63).

The OutcomesWhat about the outcomes of

revival—on the individual, on thegroup, on the entire church or com-munity? McGavran lists, among oth-ers, holy living, “the restoration ofNew Testament Christianity.”

Another outcome, he says, ispower—“tremendous spiritual powerto do Christ’s will.” It affects our con-duct as Christians, he says. The infill-ing of the Holy Spirit leads to theconfession and renunciation of previ-ously hidden sins. “Evil habits ofmind and body—covetousness, …lust, addiction to drink, idolatry, raceprejudice—that had for yearsenslaved women and men—are bro-ken. The Holy Spirit gives new stan-dards of justice and mercy to therevived, and they begin to advocateadvanced social righteousness.”4

Finally revival drives Christians toproclaim the gospel. The believers,once revived, become coworkers withGod. They take up the work of Jesus astheir own. They are no longer forced towitness for Christ. Instead, witnessingbecomes their second nature.

We are living at a time when thisworld is about to come to an end, andrevival is more needed today than ever.Ellen G. White reminds us that “Bibleconversion and sanctification—a radi-cal change of heart and transforma-tion of character—is the great need ofthe churches of today”5

It’s an empirical fact that prayer meetings in manyAdventist congregations are losing their vibrancy. Thetotal number of attendees has rapidly declined in

recent years. Prayer meetings seem to have lost their fervor,and are almost dead. This decline is, of course, the result ofmany factors. It could result from the mood and style ofthe organization that fosters a lifeless atmosphere. Anotherreason could be that the leadership for prayer meetingsfeels frustrated.

But the question remains, “What can be done to reviveinterest and attendance in prayer meeting and boost thedesire of our members to have meaningful prayer lives?”The following steps could help make for more effectiveand vibrant prayer meetings:

1. The need for prayer. The apostle Paul says, “Praywithout ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17).* Prayer must be a lifepartner of the Christian. It is the means by which we com-municate with God and make our requests known to Him.We must talk to God. He bids us to come to Him. He says,“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, andI will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). This rest is from every-thing, including a hard-day’s work. We must remind ourmembers of this promise and, hence, encourage theirgrowth from mere formality to service with understanding.

2. Time management. Time for prayer meetings mustneither be rushed, nor should it be prolonged beyond itsscheduled time. Many people need to prepare reports andother materials for the next day’s activity. Others travel agreat deal. Still others prefer to attend the prayer serviceafter work before going home to see their family. Whenlong prayer meetings become the norm, it will preventmany people from attending prayer meetings. Leaders mustmanage prayer meeting time for maximum effectiveness.

3. Leadership in prayer meetings. Much preparationmust be taken to offer a well-organized presentation. Thesermon or devotional talk must be thoughtful but short,and the rest of the time given to prayer. Many forget that itis not the sermon that must be heated in the oven. Spiritual

gifts have been given to all members, and each member’sgifts must be sharpened and used to edify the church.Pastors and elders must also be careful in choosing personsto lead the prayer meeting who are of upright character.

4. Diversities and dynamism. While we should becareful not to cross over from Adventism toPentecostalism, prayer meetings must have life and holdthe interest of those in attendance. In too many placesthey have become boring services.

Prayer meetings may be organized into small groups sothat group discussion can take place. In this setting theleader can also lead participants through particular prayerpoints. Prayers may begin right away, along with thesinging of hymns. A short Bible presentation given beforethe prayer time will encourage a mindset of prayer andworship. In whatever way, let vibrancy be seen and experi-enced in the prayer meetings. God has given us abundantknowledge in these last days (Dan. 12:4), and the churchshould experience the new understandings God is givingto His people. Let our divinely inspired knowledge be cou-pled with innovation.

5. The pastor’s part. Prior to the prayer meeting, thepastor can—when possible—contact members to inquireas to whether they have a particular problem that thechurch can help them pray about. Members want to heartheir pastor pray for them. When members see their pas-tor in this way, they will trust the pastor more. The pas-

tor’s relationships with members through the prayer meet-ing will energize wider church participation.

Pastors and elders who want to add flavor to theirprayer meetings must allow the church to hear people theyhave never heard before. There is no rule against invitinganother Adventist pastor to help in the prayer meetingservice. We all like meeting new people, and new peoplefrequently have fresh ideas and guidance to share. Invitinga pastor or elder from outside the district will add new fla-vor to the prayer meeting.

6. Time for testimonies and thanksgiving. Planningfor member testimonies is another way to turn hearts inthe church. Our Christian lives have been watered, madestronger, and we can face various situations in life becauseof the testimonies of other believers. Sadly, many prayermeetings are dropping testimony times. Testimony timegives members an opportunity to tell how God has beenlistening to their prayers. These times also allow us to listento the miracles that God has been doing in the lives ofchurch members as a result of their faith in Christ.

7. Music appreciation. The purpose of prayer meetingsshould not be that of entertainment. It should be for time totalk with the Lord. We need to lay our cares and concernsaside, and bow before the throne of God to receive strengthfor our lives. Music is another effective method we can useto elevate the minds of our members to the ultimate Sourceof power. Music has the potential to encourage more than

sermons. Hearing therhythms and voices of fellowbelievers is an inspiringmeans of leading listeners topraise, thanksgiving, andprayer. Music can also relaxthe body and elevate alert-ness. However, music forprayer meetings should besolemn in nature. Hymnsshould be selected carefully.

8. Members’ suggestions. After each prayer meeting,the pastor should ask members how they felt about theexperience and what they would like in the next week’sprayer meeting. Pastors and elders should not presumethey know the best way to lead a prayer meeting. Membershave constructive criticisms that can make prayer meetingan encouraging and uplifting time.

9. Program outline. A printed program lists the orderof service, as well as how members are involved. It is goodfor participants to know the order of service ahead of timeso that no one is surprised about what role they are to playin the program. Those having duties in the service shouldalso be reminded of their responsibilities. If possible, leteach member have a personal copy of the program.Having a printed program also allows members to seethemselves playing a part in the program; it may encour-age them to participate more.

10. A time for fellowship. Prayer meetings can be aneffective means of reuniting the church to Christ and toeach other in fellowship. In groups of two or three, theparticipants may want to come together to pray for oneanother. They could then each choose a prayer partner andcontinue to pray for one another throughout the week.“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren todwell together in unity!” (Ps. 133:1).

Warm FellowshipThese steps can be reviewed yearly in order to keep

your church’s prayer meeting on fire. Make every effort tohelp your church prayer meetings stay alive. A prayingchurch is a growing church. Allow the gospel commissionto be the central theme of your church. Thus, all the activi-ties in the life of your congregation, such as witnessing andevangelism, will be energized by the power of prayer.

Keep church members alive through a livingprayer meeting.

for four years and a prosecutor’s investigator for five years.Surely with my training and experience I could find atleast one flaw in Peter’s Bible. But where to begin? I decid-ed to start from the beginning and work my way back-wards, confident it wouldn’t take long.

Using a Bible Peter had given me a few years before, Ibegan the task of proving the Bible wrong. Little did Iknow at that time the profound impact this innocentundertaking would have on my life.

Now where is that place about Saturday? Peter said itwould be in Genesis 2. H’mmm, it sure doesn’t say anythingabout not going to work on Saturday, only that God rested

and blessed the day. Peter must have misinterpreted thisverse! That was easy! I can’t wait until tomorrow.

But Peter had an answer for that one: Exodus 20. GuessI’ll have to do a better job of investigation next time. ThisBible thing might not be as easy as I thought!

And so it went, day after day, for three months.Questions, questions, questions, but always Peter had theright answer to satisfy me that that was the truth. Thegospel according to Peter came fast and furious, but it wasalways mixed with a Christ-like spirit.

Turmoil and ChangeMy heart and mind were really going through turmoil

now as I began questioning everything I read and every-thing around and about me. What’s wrong and what’sright? Where does this all lead? How is this going to end?Can it be true that my great-grandparents are asleep andnot watching over me? Can it be true that the miracles theyperformed were Satan’s deceptions? Nothing made senseanymore. But I needed to find the truth!

For two more months I struggled with myself as themessages from Peter worked on my heart. Conversioncame slowly, almost imperceptively, but a definite changewas taking place. Fellow workers commented on how Iwasn’t as obnoxious as before, and when I used a swearword, I would quickly apologize. I also noticed a change inmyself. The name Jesus took on a new meaning for me,and hearing people use it callously to express anger orfrustration made me feel curiously uneasy. My beer drink-ing gradually slowed and eventually stopped. I couldn’texplain what was happening to me, but it felt good. Icould see a commitment coming soon but how could I besure I was making the right decision?

Great-grandfather was a Buddhist priest, blessedwith the power to heal through prayer. For 36years I had heard of his remarkable magical gifts

and the miraculous healings he performed. From remov-ing snake curses to the exorcising of dead centipedes froma man’s ear, Great-grandfather could do it all.

Great-grandmother was “samurai” (warrior class) andversed in the healing arts of moxa, acupuncture, and mas-sage. She had healed people of cancer with acupuncturetreatments long before the Western world knew what can-cer was. She was a healer in her own right.

Such was my upbringing, steeped in ancestral prideand worship. I was proud of my heritage and comforted inknowing I had powerful ancestors to watch over me.Comfortable, that is, until I met Peter.

Peter was Hawaiian, and he was a Christian. At 5 foot11 and 235 pounds, he was a big man with a big Christianheart. Peter was the kind of guy who would buy you luncheven though he needed the money for groceries. Peter wasalways ready with a hug and with encouraging words ofgracious aloha. Peter was kind and gentle, never harsh orcrass. He was always at peace.

But Peter had one fault. He agitated my mind!Peter said that when we die our spirit returns to God

and there is no more consciousness. But I knew different-ly. I had lived with spiritualism. I had seen spirits. I hadbeen attacked by spirits. How could he say there was nolife after death? I needed to set him straight. But everytime I tried, he would quote something from his Bible toexplain his Christian belief. Peter told me story after storyafter story out of the Bible. I knew it must be a mistake,but how could I make him see that?

One day as we were discussing his religion, it hit me.The way to prove Peter wrong was to prove the Biblewrong. If his authority was no longer valid, then all of hisarguments were also invalid. Maybe then I could interesthim in meditation methods and spirit worship.

“I’ll prove to you that you’re wrong,” I said.“Please,” he replied, “if you can lead me into further

truth, I’ll gladly change.”

To Prove the Black Book WrongThe challenge was on.I didn’t know much about Christianity or the Bible,

but I was a trained investigator. I had been a police officer

A Strange Prayer and God’s Strange AnswerThe answer came a few weeks later in, of all places, Las

Vegas. In “Sin City” for four nights and five days of “train-ing,” the glitter and glamour sure looked inviting. I arrivedon a Sunday afternoon with $350 burning a hole in mypocket. I was eager to get out onto the craps table. ByTuesday afternoon I was broke, except for $40 and my air-line ticket that I had prudently tucked away in a safedeposit box for the return trip home. But what would I donow? We didn’t leave until Thursday. I hated to borrowmoney, especially when it was to be used for gambling,but the thought of just sitting around for the next two

days was too much for the gambler in me. Within min-utes, I was back at the tables with $100 borrowed from myroommate David. By evening I had lost another $60 anddecided to retire for the night. Since it was still relativelyearly, I decided to read the hotel’s Gideon Bible.

A nagging thought kept intruding into my alreadymixed-up mind. “Gambling is a sin,” the voice said. “Butwhy?” I protested. I’ve always participated in gambling ofone form or another ever since childhood. Everyone I knewgambled, either with cards, on ball games, bowling, bingo,the outcome of political races—it was in my blood! I triedto rationalize, but the nagging feeling could not be denied.

As the weight of this new burden forced me to myknees, I cried out: “Lord, I feel as though I’m doing some-

thing wrong, and it’s bothering me. I guess my familycould have used the $400 I just blew, but You know howmuch pleasure I get from gambling. You also know howmuch I hate to owe people money, yet I actually borrowedmoney to gamble with. I must need help. Lord, if You arereally up there and listening to my prayer, You’ll have toshow me. I need to know You truly exist! This is what Ipropose. Tomorrow morning I’m going to play a game ofKeno. I’ll bet $3 on three numbers: 46, 69, and 80. At 42:1odds, I’ll win $126. Now here’s the deal. If You let me win,I’ll tip the Keno runner, repay David the $100 I borrowed,I’ll quit gambling, and whatever monies I return home

with, I’ll donate it to the church. Amen.”When I awoke the next morning, I had all

but forgotten about my prayer until I satdown for breakfast and saw the Keno board.Taking out a Keno card, I nervously markedthe numbers 46, 69, and 80. As the Kenorunner passed by, I gave her my card and $3.I don’t remember my breakfast much, northe conversation that David tried to getgoing. All I could think of was the upcomingKeno game. When the betting closed I imag-ined it was only a matter of minutes beforemy life would be drastically changed.

The numbers began appearing on theKeno board. Random numbers, 20 inall, were mechanically chosen from apool of 80 numbers. The combinationsone could expect were unlimited, and Iknew my chances were slim. After all, Ihad played the game a number of timesbefore and had never won. I had been toFBI classes and learned that Keno was the“sucker’s game,” with winners coming fewand far between. Yet I felt that, somehow,something was different this time.

I tried to remain calm and detachedfrom the game, but my eyes remained glued to the Kenoboard. When “46” lit the screen, my heart skipped a beat.After about 10 more numbers, “80” blinked on, and Istopped chewing.

I wasn’t excited because I had won $126, nor was I excit-ed because I had the money to repay my roommate. I wasexcited because God in heaven had listened and respondedto my prayer. The God Peter had told me about—the Godhe assured me loved me and was interested in me—reallyexisted! This is what I got excited about, and it all beganwith the Gospel According to Peter.

You referred to “my family” in connection with the Vegas incident. Were you already married? And with children?Yes, I’d been married 13 years, with three children:Gregg was 12, Pamela 9, and Bradd 7.

And what was your work at that time?I was chief investigator for the Hawaii County prose-cuting attorney’s office. The fellow from whom I bor-rowed the $100 was my victims’ witness counselor,David Yamada.

Were you still in touch with Peter at the time? Did he have the joy of seeing you baptized?Yes. Peter was working as one of my special investi-gators. And there was a Glenn Taka, also one of myspecial investigators, who happened to be Peter’scousin, a former police officer and a Seventh-dayAdventist. Both Glenn and Peter “worked” on me andgave me Bible studies.

Where is Peter now? Peter died in January 2005.

How soon after that Vegas incident were you baptized?The Vegas incident occurred in September, 1982. Mywife, eldest son Gregg, and I were baptizedNovember 6, 1982.

And your wife, Sandra—how did she come to be interested in the church?As Peter shared with me I shared with Sandra. Whenshe noticed the changes in me, she took an interestin what was changing me. As she studied with meand later with the pastor of the Seventh-dayAdventist Church in Hilo (Pastor Ralph Neidigh), weall decided to follow Christ.

Did you ever become a minister? And are you now an ordained minister?This is another long story, but the short version isyes. I pastored the Mount View Japanese AdventistChurch after returning from the mission field in 1992.I was ordained in 1996, and pastored until 1997.

How did you come to be at the Northern California Conference (NCC)? And how long have you been there?This is another long story, with ample examples ofhow God leads. I left pastoring when I was offered aposition with the Central California Conference as aplanned giving consultant. Three years later, in 2000,I was called to the NCC as associate director of trustservices. In December 2005 I was voted codirector;and when my predecessor retired in June 2006, Itook on full responsibility as director.

It’s considered one of the mostmoving, shocking, and at the

same time wonderful films evermade—The Elephant Man, byDavid Lynch. The film depicts theplight of Joseph Merrick, brandedthe “Elephant Man” because of theabnormal growths that deformedhis body since childhood.

In 1884 Frederick Treves, surgeonand lecturer on human anatomy,discovered Merrick at a freak showin London; and partly out of curios-ity, partly out of pity gave him a bedin his hospital. “The most strikingfeature about him was his enormousand misshapen head,” Treves saidlater. “From the brow there project-ed a huge bony mass like a loaf,while from the back of the headhung a bag of spongy, fungous-look-ing skin. From the upper jaw thereprojected another mass of bone. Itprotruded from the mouth like apink stump, turning the upper lip

inside out and making the mouth amere slobbering aperture.”

Dr. Treves’ report gives us anidea of the pain and shame thatsuch a disfigured creature had tobear. He was kept like an animaland put on display before gapingcrowds. The deformations coveredhis whole body.

Surprisingly, however, Dr. Trevesdiscovered that the creature behindthe grotesque sideshow exhibit wasnot an apathetic imbecile, but anintelligent, sensitive, and friendlybeing. That news soon made the“Elephant Man” famous, with evenQueen Victoria sending a personalexpression of sympathy. Oneevening—by then it was the year1890—a theater performance washeld in his honor. Upon returningfrom the play to his room in theattic, the 28-year-old removed fromhis bed the pillows meant to prophim up while sleeping, and placedhimself flat on his bed, so that theweight of his massive skull slowlycaused him to suffocate.

What Are We? Who Are We?The story of the Elephant Man

is a poignant example of humansuffering and the longing for com-fort in a brutal world. Joseph

Merrick had no greater wish thanto be loved just as he was, and weare no different. Can we discover aJoseph Merrick within ourselves?Who are we anyway? Cultivatedanimals, lonesome and disfiguredcreatures? Or maybe more?

The Bible gives an astonishinganswer—sobering and encouragingat the same time. On the one hand,it doesn’t hesitate to point out thecause of our deeply ingraineddeformities. But on the other hand,it paints us in a completely differ-ent light, a portrait full of beautyand dignity. (This picture isdescribed in Adventist FundamentalBelief, No. 7.)

Nothing illustrates the destinyand dignity of humans more strik-ingly than the biblical expression“the image of God” (Gen. 1:26, 27).The emphasis here is more on per-sonality than appearance. The abilityto think creatively and independent-ly, to understand the feelings of oth-ers, to interact with others, toassume responsibility—these are allqualities that identify free andmature personalities. Moreover, theyare divine qualities. “For You havemade him a little lower than theangels, and You have crowned himwith glory and honor” (Ps. 8:5).

But what has become of the“image of God”? What about thosewith exploited bodies and withoutrights? Or those who have been tor-tured and murdered by maraudinggangs and brutal soldiers? What aboutthe captives, stripped of all clothesand with a leash tied around theirneck, reduced to mere pawns in thehands of their captors? Or the 850million suffering from undernourish-ment and the 100,000 of them thatdie every day of starvation? Whatabout the sick, whose bodies are con-sumed by incurable diseases? Or thecountless abused children and mis-treated women and all those who haveno prospect or hope of a humaneexistence? What are their lives actuallyworth? What has happened to theirinalienable human dignity, to theirhigh position under God?

What virus could deform theimage of God so profoundly? Whatdisease could cause such terriblemutilation? We may not like to hearit, but the Bible bluntly reveals thename of the cause: SIN.

Sin—the Unpardonable WordSin is the situation in which we

all find ourselves from birth—sepa-rated from the God of life andcaught in the clutches of evil thatbrings us death. You may deny thissobering diagnosis, thinking it onlyapplies to others. But we have allbeen affected. Sin distorts the image

of God into the grimace of the devil.The almost unbelievable message

of the Bible is that in Jesus Christ Godcame down into the midst of thisworld of sin and identified Himselfcompletely with our fate. In the wordsof Isaiah’s prophecy, “His visage wasmarred more than any man, and Hisform more than the sons of men” (Isa.52:14). “He has no form or comeli-ness; and when we see Him, there isno beauty that we should desire Him.He is despised and rejected by men, aMan of sorrows and acquainted withgrief…. He was despised, and we didnot esteem Him…. But He waswounded for our transgressions, Hewas bruised for our iniquities; thechastisement for our peace was uponHim, and by His stripes we arehealed” (Isa. 53:2-5; cf. 24:25-27).

Paul was referring to this astonish-ing truth when he said that God sent“His own Son in the likeness of sinfulflesh, on account of sin: [and that] Hecondemned sin in the flesh” (Rom.8:3). Christ “made Himself of no rep-utation, taking the form of a bondser-vant, and coming in the likeness ofmen…. He humbled Himself andbecame obedient to the point ofdeath, even the death of the cross”(Phil. 2:7, 8).

Instead of pointing fingers at ussinners and leaving us to the fate wedeserved, Jesus became one of us andtook upon Himself what we alsomust bear.

Lifted UpGod’s compassion for our human

predicament doesn’t exhaust itself inHis personal participation in our suf-fering (see Heb. 2:17; 4:15). It isGod’s will, in addition, that weregain our original dignity lostthrough sin, the dignity of His sonsand daughters. The reason He cameall the way down was to lift us all theway up again to Himself. He over-came sin that He might one dayeliminate it for eternity. His goal isnothing less than the “restoration ofall things” (Acts 3:21). That’s why Hehas reconciled us to Himself inChrist and is now working to restoreHis divine image in us.

All those who accept this call toreconciliation may know that theyhave become a “new creation” inChrist (2 Cor. 5:17-21) and are pre-destined to be conformed to Hisimage—that is, to become like Him(Rom. 8:29; Eph. 4:24; 2 Peter 1:3, 4;1 John 3:2). To reflect His righteous-ness and mercy, to love Him back andgive His love to our fellow humanbeings—indeed, to all creatures—iswhat we were created for. So that wemight live “for the praise of hisglory,” and honor Him with ourwhole existence (Eph. 1:12).

Man and woman were made in the image of God with individuality, the power andfreedom to think and to do. Though created free beings, each is an indivisible unity ofbody, mind, and spirit, dependent upon God for life and breath and all else. When our

first parents disobeyed God, they denied their dependence upon Him and fell from theirhigh position under God. The image of God in them was marred and they became sub-

ject to death. Their descendants share this fallen nature and its consequences. They are born with weaknesses and tendencies toevil. But God in Christ reconciled the world to Himself and by His Spirit restores in penitent mortals the image of their Maker. Created

for the glory of God, they are called to love Him and one another, and to care for their environment. (Gen. 1:26-28; 2:7; Ps. 8:4-8; Acts17:24-28; Gen. 3; Ps. 51:5; Rom. 5:12-17; 2 Cor. 5:19, 20; Ps. 51:10; 1 John 4:7, 8, 11, 20; Gen. 2:15.)

In every land there are thousands of souls in darkness,without the knowledge of the truth—souls who havenever heard the last message of mercy to a perishing

world. They know not that the end of all things is at hand.“Peace and safety” is the cry that is sounded from the popu-lar pulpits. And yet how many of God’s professed people areat ease in Zion. The churches in general are weak anddependent. They think that some one must be with themevery Sabbath to spread for them a gospel feast. They do notrealize that they must individually appropriate to themselvesthe truth that has been unfolded to them, and communicateits light to those who know it not; and they are doing com-paratively nothing, either in home missions or in the“regions beyond.” Can you, dear brethren and sisters, bedoers of the Word of God while indifferent to the souls thatare perishing around you? Can you listen to the truth,Sabbath after Sabbath, and not impart its light to others?

The church must not depend so fully as she has donein the past upon the ordained minister alone to carry thegospel to the world. God has given to every man his work.For many years He has been bidding His people, “Go worktoday in my vineyard.” He calls upon men who understandthe Scriptures to go into places where the message of truthhas never penetrated, and there work, imparting to otherswhat God has imparted to them. They can be as the salt,communicating saving properties to those with whomthey come in contact.

The standard of truth may be raised by humble men andwomen; and the youth, and even children, may be a blessingto others, by revealing what the truth has done for them.God will use the most feeble instruments if they are whollysubmitted to Him. He can work through them to reachsouls to whom the minister could not obtain access. Thereare the highways and byways to be searched. With yourBible in your hand, with your heart warm and glowing withthe love of God, you may go out and tell others your experi-ence; you may make known to them the truth that hasimpressed your heart, praying with faith that God will makeyour efforts successful in their salvation. Communicatelight, and you will have more light to communicate. Thusyou may become laborers together with God.

God desires that His children shall make use of all their

powers, that in working to bless others, they may growstrong in the strength of Jesus. You may not be learned;you may not be thought capable of doing a great work forGod; but there are things which you can do. You can letyour light shine forth to others. Through the prophetIsaiah, Christ has said: “Is not this the fast that I have cho-sen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavyburdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye breakevery yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, andthat thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house?when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and thatthou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thylight break forth as the morning, and thine health shallspring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go beforethee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rereward…. And ifthou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy theafflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thydarkness be as the noon day: and the Lord shall guide theecontinually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fatthy bones; and thou shalt be like a watered garden, andlike a spring of water, whose waters fail not.”

Every one may have an understanding of the truth, andexert an influence for good. Then go to work, my brethren

and sisters. Gain an experience by working for others. Youmay make mistakes; but this is not more than the mostintelligent, and those in positions of trust, have done againand again. You will not always meet with success; but youcan never know the result of humble, disinterested effort tohelp those who are in darkness. Through the agency of theHoly Spirit, you may win souls from error to truth, and inso doing your own souls will be filled with the love of God.Unaccustomed paths will open before you in your work ofministry. You will often have to step out of the beaten track,and, under the Holy Spirit’s guidance, do special work forGod; but if you make Him your dependence, He will giveyou wisdom and strength according to your need.

I pray that church members may see the peril ofdeparting from God’s expressed commandment, andrepent of their lifelong neglect of the service of Christwhile professing to be His followers. If they would go forthas pilgrims and strangers, and make for themselves homeswhere there is work to be done, letting their light shineforth to those who are in darkness and error, they wouldthen be able to say, “And of his fulness have all we received,and grace for grace.” We shall receive fresh supplies ofgrace, as we impart to others that which we already have.

The Holy Spirit will impress upon the mind the truththat the religion of the Bible is a grand and precious reality.You need not only to assent to the truth, but to put it intopractise. Let every ray of light which shines from the Wordbe heeded as the eternal truth of God. Then as you placeyour will on the Lord’s side, look around for some work todo for the Master. Set to work at whatever your hand findsto do; for it is in practising truth, in blessing others, thatyou work out your own salvation. If God works in you towill and to do of His good pleasure, you will cultivate thosetraits of character that every heir of heaven must possess.

The reason many have so superficial an experience isthat they do so much for themselves and so little forJesus. Intercourse with those who are in need of help,with the purpose of saving their souls, will lead us topray for wisdom, and look to Jesus as our helper. Byunselfish labor for others, we shall establish ourselves inthe faith far more firmly than by listening to so many ser-mons. The Holy Spirit will be our helper, giving us argu-ments with which to meet opposition, and in all ourwork giving us steadfast faith and unshaken confidence.Thus we shall gain an experience of more value thangold, silver, or precious stones.

Seventh-day Adventist understanding of Scripture grew out ofan intensive dialogue between believers gathered around theWord of God, a faithful habit to which the modern church iscontinually called. In this article an Adventist historian tracesthe ways in which God led men and women to focus on long-neglected Bible truths, especially the truth about Christ’s min-istry in the heavenly sanctuary.—Editors.

The year 1844 is intriguing, as it marks the close of the2300 years of Daniel 8:14. It also signals the time ofthe take-off of the Third Angel’s flight. The about-to-

be-discovered Third Angel’s Message must, in the verynature of the case, develop an entity and an emphasis of itsown. To this end there came the individual discovery andthen the merging of three distinctive, foundational truths—the Sanctuary, Sabbath, and Spirit of Prophecy. And out ofthe convergence of these three would develop a Heaven-bornmessage and mission that would carry God’s final EverlastingGospel appeal to all mankind. These three basic doctrineswould form the nucleus. All other structural truths would beclustered about them and be united with them.

Within a few years a unified system of doctrine would bewell on its way to fruition, lifting up truths that entrenchederror and hoary traditions had long “trodden underfoot.”

The dominant apostasy of the Middle Ages had in verity“cast down the truth to the ground” (Daniel 8:12), and hadtragically and dominantly “practised, and prospered.”

It had struck at the very heart of all three of these fun-damentals by substituting the sacrifice of the mass daily,on 10,000 altars, for the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross; ahuman priesthood with auricular confessions, and theintercession of “saints,” for Christ’s ministry in theHeavenly Sanctuary; a spurious festival in place of the trueSabbath; and the alleged infallibility of the pope and thecontinuing inspiration and inerrancy of the church for theHoly Spirit’s unerring guidance.

These were all involved as background subversions. Thedivine provisions and relationships had been “cast down.”Now they were to be lifted up, and restored. That is trulythe heart of it all—the essence of the great spiritual con-troversy of the centuries.

This recovery involved the truth of the once-for-all Actof Atonement on the Cross and subsequent mediatorialPriesthood of Christ in the Heavenly Sanctuary, togetherwith the eternal moral law and its enshrined Sabbath. Andalong with that was the awesome transaction that we havecome to call the “Investigative Judgment”—and thence onto the final events.

Such a simultaneous revival of these specific truths, justat this time, came not through the foresight and planningof man. Rather, the appointed hour had come in the planand provision of God for the discovery—or, more accu-rately, the recovery—and establishment of these neglectedbut latent truths.

The hour on the prophetic clock had struck. And so,with the coming of the hour, men obviously called of Godwere impelled to search out and proclaim the special truths

now due the world—truths that were fundamental to theemergence and development of God’s distinctive Churchand Message for the last days. It was an epochal hour.

These pioneer searchers were men sedulously seekingfor foundational lost truths—the “hidden treasure” of theparable of Matthew 13:44. To this end they combed thefield of Holy Scripture to find that “treasure” that had longbeen trodden underfoot, covered over, and well-nigh for-gotten. And they were not disappointed. Note the uniquecharacter of that search, and its epochal results.

The principal doctrinal truths of the early SabbatarianAdventists unfolded gradually, as well as independentlyand separately, to earnest minds in different places.Immediately after the October, 1844, Disappointment, theearliest group to engage in such study began at once tomeet in Port Gibson (or nearby Canandaigua), New York[United States]. There Hiram Edson, O. R. L. Crosier, andDr. F. B. Hahn came jointly upon certain basic factsregarding the distinctive Sanctuary question.

Its structural importance had been indicated by theparamount place of the Sanctuary types and ceremonialsystem of the Old Testament Church. The findings of theNew York State trio came as a result of intensive Bible studyand candid historical search and review—this unique studygroup evidently continuing together and searching forweeks, possibly months. Here was to be found the Biblicalkey unlocking their recent Disappointment. Here was lighton the baffling future. For them it was paramount presenttruth, undergirding all others.

Their joint findings were first published in the autumn of1845 in the Day-Dawn, a paper edited by Crosier and issuedat Canandaigua, New York. But it had only a small andrather local circulation. So the conclusions were then pub-

lished in fuller form in the larger Day-Star of Cincinnati,Ohio [United States], in an “Extra” dated February 7, 1846.This had a fairly wide distribution and so reached nearly allof our pioneer leaders. It exerted quite an influence.

The fundamental point coming out of this intensivegroup study was that there are definitely two grand divi-sions, or phases, of Christ’s High-Priestly Ministry in theheavenly sanctuary, just as was indicated in the ancientearthly type. Christ’s ministry does not consist simply of asingle unit of service in heaven, as had inaccurately beenconceived in the Millerite Seventh-Month Movement.Then there was the further point that, according to type,Christ had only just entered upon this second phase of Hisheavenly ministry on October 22, 1844. That now seemedclear, and Biblically sound.

October 22 was, of course, the day that to the greatMillerite host was so bitterly disappointing, because Christhad failed to come out of the heaven of heavens—or “holyof holies,” as they had envisioned it—to “bless His waitingpeople” on the anticipated “day of atonement.” This com-ing out they had equated with His Second Advent in glory,and which they had, in the Seventh-Month Movement,taken for granted as being merely a twenty-four-hour day.

Crosier and his associates were persuaded that ourheavenly High Priest was even then engaged in the final, orJudgment, phase of His ministry—which they thoughtwould doubtless continue for a period of years. That wasthe heart of the study and the findings on the Sanctuaryemanating from Port Gibson and Canandaigua—alongwith lesser features, such as the fact that the “scapegoat”represented Satan, and was not merely another figure ofChrist, as commonly held.

As to the Sanctuary light, this was clearly Bible truththat explained the very things that those who had passedthrough the Great Disappointment most needed to know.It revealed the nature of the mistake involved in their 1844misconception. It likewise illuminated their current pre-carious position. And in bold strokes it outlined the des-tined future events—on to the Great Consummation.

Thus, starting with the Sanctuary group study at PortGibson-Canandaigua, in time the 1844 Disappointmentexperience became “clear as noonday” to our foundingfathers. The unfolding Sanctuary light had provided thekey, explaining their past confusion and bringing under-standing, hope, and certainty as to the future. (And it alsoenfolded the Sabbath light, as they were soon to see.)

Thus the Sanctuary truth, so long “cast down” andtrodden underfoot throughout much of the ChristianEra—until the prophesied end of the 2300 years—beganto be recovered in 1844. That was the demand of Bibleprophecy. That was the significant fulfillment of history. It istremendously impressive. With the coming of the timecame the people called of God, and the recovered messageof the Sanctuary truth foretold in Holy Writ.

Q U E S T I O N : How did Adventists arrive at the identification of the kingdoms repre-sented by the symbols in the books ofDaniel and Revelation?

In some cases this has not been difficult; but in others,much more so. It is important to be aware of the limita-

tions and risks involved in interpreting those symbols. Wemust begin by establishing a proper method of interpreta-tion, then discuss how to use it.

1. Proper Method: Christians have used different meth-ods to interpret the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation.Adventists have adhered towhat is called a historicistsystem of interpretation. Acc-ording to this understanding,prophecies cover a broad out-line of the history of God’speople from the time of theprophet to the establishmentof God’s kingdom on earth.This is the methodology pro-vided to Daniel by an angelsent to interpret the vision ofDaniel 7. The prophecy had todo with events that covered the historical period from the Babylon Empire to the time ofthe end (Dan. 7:38, 44). This approach was confirmed byJesus, who indicated that the last part of the prophecy ofDaniel 9 was going to be fulfilled in the destruction ofJerusalem (Matt. 24:15). Paul also understood the comingof the antichrist as a future event (2 Thess. 2:7-9). We havesimply followed the biblical system of interpretation.

2. Kingdoms Clearly Identified: The book of Daniel pro-vides the historical application of the symbols. The angelinterpreter told Daniel that four kingdoms were to rise onearth and the fifth one was going to be the kingdom of God.The angel identified by name three of the historical king-doms: Babylon (Dan. 2:38), Medo-Persia (5:28; 8:20), andGreece (8:21). The fourth kingdom is not identified, but adetailed description of its nature and actions is provided(7:19-26). Jesus implied that it was Rome (Matt. 24:15, 16;Luke 21:20, 21). As long as we follow the biblical materialswe are on safe ground. But many other symbols were notinterpreted by the angel (e.g., the 10 horns, the little horn,two other beasts in Revelation 13, Babylon, etc.). How do weidentify the prophetic fulfillment of those symbols?

3. Kingdoms Not Clearly Identified: What controlsshould we use to identify the broad outline of historyfound in the visions? We have to move from what is

clearly revealed in the prophecies themselves to what isleft historically undefined.

First, we have to realize that in Daniel 2 and 7 wehave the most important outline of apocalyptic prophecyin both Daniel and Revelation. This prophetic backboneprovides the indispensable historical outline to be usedin fitting other apocalyptic prophecies and their fulfill-ments within history. We know that the fourth kingdomis Rome, according to the prophecy, that it would bedivided, and that one of the small kingdoms—a politi-cal-religious power—would dominate the others. Byabout A.D. 200 Hippolytus interpreted the fourth beast

as the Romans and the littlehorn as the antichrist.Christian interpreters early inthe Christian era continuedto use the system of interpre-tation used by the angel inter-preter to identify the histori-cal fulfillment of apocalypticprophecies.

Second, we pay attentionto the chronology of eventslocated in the prophecy itself.For instance, Revelation 12moves from an attack against

the Child (Christ), to an attack against the woman (Hischurch), and finally against the remnant (those alive whenJesus returns). Notice the historical progression.

Third, we examine historical events, taking into con-sideration the prophetic line of thought. History indicatesthat Satan attempted to destroy Jesus and persecuted thechurch. The remnant is located between Satan’s failure todestroy the woman after 1,260 years and the end-timeattack against it. The eschatological role of the beast fromthe sea and the other from the earth (Rev. 13) takes placeduring the time of the remnant.

Finally, we should consider that history tends to reveala self-correcting process that reaches its climax when theprophecies find their historical fulfillment.

Moving from the known to the unknown could easilytake us into the dangerous zone of human speculation. Weshould use the same procedure employed by the angelinterpreter, keeping in mind that prophecy only provides ageneral outline of what will take place as we approach thefinal days of earth’s history.

(Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 84).It is our aim that we will make

the very best use of each and everyteaching opportunity with our chil-dren, especially where spiritual thingsare concerned. Communion is no different. As Seventh-day Adventistspractice open Communion that per-mits nonmembers to partake ofthe emblems, we see no reason to forbid our children who believe the very same.

Our sons asked us aboutCommunion around age 3. We toldthem about Jesus’ Last Supper withHis disciple friends, how He washedtheir feet and shared special grapejuice and bread with them. Weexplained that washing someone else’sfeet shows you love them, and drink-ing the grape juice and eating thebread shows that we remember thatJesus lived a perfect life and died forus so that we can be with Him inheaven when His work there is done.When they then asked if they couldtake part, we responded by first askingthem if they love Jesus and believe Helived and died to save them (the juve-nile counterpart of the introspectionthat should take place in adults).When they responded positively, welet them help wash our feet and gavethem sips of our grape juice and bitesof our bread.

The cold went right through me as I stood in the predawn light at the snow-covered resting places of James and Ellen White. A business trip had madepossible a long-held hope to visit the burial site of some of the Adventist

pioneers at Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek, Michigan. I hurried to spend a fewminutes alone at the cemetery before catching a flight in Detroit that morning.

I stayed up late the night before reading about Oak Hill Cemetery—whowas buried there, what they went through at their passing, who attended thefuneral services, and what was said. It was a melancholy study. That morningthe mercury hovered at 7 degrees Fahrenheit.

Many thoughts ran through my mind as I braced myself against the cold.James and Ellen White rest from their labors. Only a blink of an eye separatestheir last conscious moment and their future, joyful meeting with Jesus. They aresecure; no one can steal away their precious treasure in heaven. What would theworld trade for such security, such eternal riches? I thought of all their labors,sacrifices, sorrows, and joys. They fought the good fight; they finished the race.

I also thought of the countless hours, late nights, early mornings, long jour-neys, agonizing prayers, and strenuous labors the Whites invested in publishingthe many volumes of inspired pages. How much effort do I invest studying thecounsels, testimonies, and inspiration found in those pages? I knew the answer.

The cold was numbing. I brushed off the snow from their markers. On bend-ed knee, Ellen tended this family plot—planting flowers on her precious baby’sresting place; young Henry White next to him. She held on to the blessed hope.

I looked around at the numerous grave markers dotting the 50 acres of thecemetery. How many will awake on that morning? How many in the secondresurrection? What about me? How is it with God and me?

I longed for a closer walk with my Savior. A warm tear fell to the snow-cov-ered ground where those saints sleep in Jesus. Before God and those silent wit-nesses, I renewed my commitment to take more time to feed my soul withGod’s Word and the inspiration that came from Ellen White’s prolific pen. Sheknew Jesus, conversed with angels, visited the Promised Land. As I turnedtoward the waiting warmth of the car, the brilliant rays of the emerging sunbrightened my face. It was a new day.

M E E T Y O U R N E I G H B O RMeet Clyde Gale and his wife Helen

(Smith) Gale, who live in Fullerton,California, U.S.A. (see photo below). Clydeis 92 years old and grew up in an Adventistfamily in Wisconsin. He and Helen aregreeters at their local church where Clyde, a retired cabinetmaker, built the Fullerton church’s pulpit.

His family spans six generations of Adventism. Hisgrandparents on both sides (Mr. and Mrs. George Galeand Mr. and Mrs. George Samson) were all convertedpioneer Seventh-day Adventists—the first generation ofAdventists to ever exist!

While Clyde is a third-generation Adventist, his wifeHelen is a convert. Their two daughters, Karen Rigbyand Beverly Farley, have remained Adventists, and each

married Adventists. Clyde’s andHelen’s grandchildren are fifth-generation Adventists. Clydeand Helen also have six great-grandchildren who are sixth-generation Adventists.

Clyde prays that his familywill continue to remain true totheir Lord and their faith, andwonders if a seventh genera-tion of his family will beAdventists or if Jesus willcome first!
