2018 CONFERENCE BROCHURE 3

Foreword

The times in which we live has been described as the era of postmodernism. This concept which is prevalent in our Colleges and Universities says that all claims to truth are relative to other claims and therefore all ideas and truth must be treated as equal. This kind of thinking is influencing many young enterprising Christians and that is why we need to ensure that we do not allow the world to squeeze the church into its own mould.

Coupled with the challenge of Postmodernism is leadership, and integrity especially in Africa. Many people have climbed to top positions, but task-performance has been abysmal, making economic growth difficult. Some Christian Leaders have also not demonstrated the virtues in Christ Jesus, in their place of work, bringing shame to the name of Christ. Instead of not “being” ashamed of the gospel, the gospel is ashamed of them.

Our foundation, seeks to equip leaders with the right moral, ethical behaviour and proven managerial skills (1 Timothy 3:2 -7). We have positioned ourselves to raise leaders who would also teach and train others for the work of service (Ephesians 4:12) and for the building up the body of Christ. In this connection, we encourage every member of the body of Christ to remain in his or her denomination to impact the household of God. We believe in diversity in multiplicity as such, we appeal to all to remain where they are to strengthen the body of Christ after this conference.

“The Anointing to Lead”, chosen to be the theme for this conference is strategic and on point. With this theme, we aim to teach participants the types of anointing in the Old and New Testaments, hindrances to the anointing, the use of the anointing in our everyday living and to establish an undisputed fact the source of genuine anointing which is the Holy Spirit.

toPiC: AN OVERVIEW OF GOD’S ANOINTING IN THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE NEW TESTAMENT

1.0 intrODUCtiOn: The practice of pouring or smearing olive oil on people and objects well written in the Old Testament, (Genesis 28:18) is the earliest reference; where Jacob anoints a rock to signify its sacredness. Later, not only objects were anointed but Lepers (Lev 14:1 – 18), priests (Exodus 30:26-32) Kings (1 Sam 10:1, 16:12, 13, 1 Kings 19:16) were ritually cleansed and set apart for sacred sacrifices respectively. The anointing of Kings was so special that they were referred to as “the Lord’s anointed” eg. 2 Samuel 1:14, Ps 89: 38). However, there were non ritual anointing commonly used for cosmetic reasons ( 2 Sam 12: 20, Ruth 3:3, Ps 104:15, Amos 6:6, Esther 2:12). “Anointing” was also used as a metaphor for honour, joy because its cosmetic use (Ps 23:5, 45:7, 92:10, Isa 61:3).

Medicinal anointing is also known in Jewish literature (eg. Job 6:9, 11:8, 11- the anointing was with a fish’s gall) and oil was used in some medicine Jer. 51:8, Ezekiel 16:9.

2.0 DEFinitiOn – AnOintinG: The main Hebrew word translated “anoint” in the (NIV) Bible is “Masah” or Mashach, which means to apply oil. In ancient Mediterranean Cultures anointing was the act of pouring or smearing an oil or cream on a person, for cosmetic, medicinal,

magical, honorific or ritual purposes. Literary references to anointing make use of both its literal sense and an extended figurative sense, as one would expect a writing from cultures in which anointing for various purposes was a common practice( reference made in James 5:14… Let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him “anointing” him with oil in the name of the Lord)

2.1.0 This presentation seeks to set the background for various kinds of anointing in the Old and New Testaments and bring the context to the spiritual anointing in the later New Testament and contemporary times, as against the Old Testament era.

2.1.1 anointinG in tHe oLD testaMent: Three distinct anointing’s from the Old Testament have their type in the New Testament

2.1.2 tHe LePers anointinG: The rules which were prescribed by Moses for the priest to declare the leper cured and clean are an Old Testament picture of the New Testament cleansing from sin through Jesus Christ. Leprosy is a picture (or type) of sin and Satan’s true nature (John 10:10). All the elements of our salvation experience are there (Leviticus 14:1-18)

Page 5: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

2018 CONFERENCE BROCHURE 5

- The bird bearing away the guilt of sin, the shedding and application of blood portray Jesus shedding His blood to take away the penalty for our sin.

- Washing His flesh in water typifies water Baptism

- The Lepers anointing with oil typifies the work of the Holy Spirit in our salvation experience

- The application of blood to the ear, hand and foot of the leper is done before the anointing of oil. Symbolically, salvation comes before consecration. We need the blood of Jesus (by faith) upon our confession of faith in Christ to cleanse our ear for hearing, our hand for service and our feet for a walk in the steps of Christ. Both the blood of Jesus and the anointing of the Holy Spirit are necessary part of our great salvation. (Heb 2:3)

3.0 tHE PriESt’S AnOintinG, EXODUS 29 AnD 30 As in the case of the leper’s anointing, the Types and Symbols of the plan to salvation are found in the rules that apply to being set apart (sanctified) to the priestly ministry having been justified, the believer is set apart as priest unto the most High God (1 Peter 2:9, Revelation 1:6) by the Holy Spirit who is “the Anointing”. The priestly anointing teaches us a commitment to righteous and Holy Living after being born-again.

3.1.0 tHe KinG’s anointinG (1 Samuel 10: 1, 16:12) Saul and David were anointed by Samuel to serve as Kings in Israel. The King’s anointing was to impart power and authority of the King’s office. With this anointing God’s power came upon the King so he could rule God’s

people, Israel. - TYPE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT:

The fulfillment of the authority and power which resulted from the King’s anointing is found in Acts 1:8. “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth (NKJV). The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is clearly the New Testament type to the King’s anointing (Acts 2:4, 4:33). Through the hands of the Apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people ( Acts 5:12 NKJV)

4.0 OLD tEStAMEnt AnOintinG OiL COMPOSitiOn PrOHiBitiOnS AnD iMPLiCAtiOnS FOr US tODAY. (EXODUS 30: 22-33) - The anointing oil was meant for the

consecration of Aaron and his sons, the priests( Exodus 30:30)

- The composition was prescribed by God with special spices – 500 Shekels of liquid myrrh, ½ as much sweet-smelling cinnamon (two hundred and fifty (250) shekels, two hundred and fifty (250), shekels of sweet-smelling cane, 500 shekels of cassia according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a vim of olive oil. (Exodus 30: 23-24)

- Upon man’s flesh shall it not be poured neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it. Ex 30:32.

- Whoever makes perfume like it and whoever puts in on anyone other than a priest, might be cut off from his people (Ex 30:33)

CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION 6

The Holy Spirit as already mentioned in this write up has set believers unto the most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church.

4.1.1 The composition or materials needed to do the oil cannot be found in some places on earth and it is impossible to get some of the plants in Africa and some parts of the world.

4.1.2 Upon man’s flesh shall it not be poured: Aaron and his sons were special people as priests, set apart and besides them, no other person’s body must the oil touch.nOtE: “Flesh” represents the unbeliever and cannot receive the things of the Holy Spirit, thus those in the flesh cannot receive the things of the Spirit.

4.1.3 Whoever compounds any like it or whoever puts among of it on an outsider shall be cut off from his people. Ex 30:33, Gen 17:14.nOtE: The warning is forceful and fearful. Even in the Old Testament which these materials were used as symbols and types foreshadowing the coming of Christ, if there were restrictions to the use of the anointing oil except in few cases, how much greater prohibition and punishment is there for the New Testament Leader who compounds all sorts of literal anointing oil for sale and for the worship of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

5.0 AnOintinG in tHE nEW tEStAMEntThe New Testament does not talk about the use of literal anointing with oil in worship or to consecrate people for leadership. It speaks of a spiritual anointing (Gk Chrisma) probably the Holy Spirit. By the

Holy Spirit God consecrates people for leadership and all believers to Himself and empower them to serve Him (2 Cor 1: 21-22, 1 John 2:20, 27) - The early church may not have

anointed people literally with oil to set them apart but did lay hands on them to serve in leadership roles. It could be said that the laying on of hands replaced literal anointing with oil used in the Old Testament. The laying on of hands symbolically represents God Himself pouring His life in the believer’s life as He endows him/her with power.

- It must also be noted that the laying on of hands should not be seen as a magical display, as if God’s power is in the hands of those who lay hands on believers. It is symbolic. The source of power is from God not man.

5.1.0 LiteraL anointinG in neW testaMentActs of anointing are described in the Gospels in contexts of fasting (Matt 6:17) healing (Mark 6:13, Luke 10:34, John 9:6) burial (Mark 16:1, Matt 26:12) and honouring of guests (Luke 7:46). Each context reflects a well-established custom (for healing cf Isaiah 1:6, burial cf Luke 23: 56, John 19:39). Honouring guests by anointing them was a custom associated with wealth (cf Amos 6:6, Micah 6:15). In the case of fasting, Jesus breaks with tradition by instructing those fasting to assume a festive appearance to draw attention away from their act of piety (cf 2 Sam 12:20 -23).

The verb (the doing word) most frequently used for “anointing” is “aleipho”. It refers to the external act of anointing and appears

Page 7: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

2018 CONFERENCE BROCHURE 7

in a variety of contexts (Matt 6:17, Mk 6:13, 16:1, Lk 7:38, 46, John 11:2, 12:3). Thus, literal anointing (aleipho) occurs in the New Testament document only once not for spiritual empowerment but for prayer for the sick in (James 5:14) which likely picks up in the practice referred to in Mark 6:13. Anointing the sick with oil however is not recorded in the healing narratives in Acts.

5.1.1 WHY JaMes states anointinG WitH oiL in tHe HeaLinG oF tHe siCK – James 5:14There are two main suggestions for such recommendation. i. Medicine: It may be done to its medical

properties. Josephus a Jewish historian records that doctors recommended Herod in his final illness, bath in oil and praised the medicinal properties. There were other instances where oil was used for medicinal purposes.

ii. Symbolic: Oil was regarded by the Jews as symbolizing a number of characteristics, that would encourage the one who was being anointed. Therefore the one who was being anointed was encouraged of the presence of the Spirit of God (1 Samuel 10:1, 6, 16:13) and an infusion of God’s strength.

What is clear is that James attributes healing power not to the oil but to the “prayer of faith” and the action of God. This removes the activity from the arena of magic and places it squarely in that of prayer and miracle.

5.1.2 JesUs anD tHe anoinitnG (Luke 4: 181, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me”. Jesus is aware of His anointing (Gk Chrio), in Luke 3:22 and claims to be the Messianic Servant of the Lord.

His mission involves proclaiming good news to the poor(Luke 6:20) and liberty to the captives (In the Old Testament this meant release for those enslaved in exile, but more is included here since “liberty” in Luke and Acts refers to forgiveness of sins. Jesus is “God’s Servant whom you anointed” according to Peter (Acts 4:27) is a reference to His Davidic Messianic role.

In Acts 10:38 Peter describes Jesus as anointed by God with the Holy Spirit. Here the “anointing” refers to the designation of Jesus as Messiah and His empowerment for that task. In both passages the anointing is Christological in that it prepares or inaugurates Jesus into His office.

It is the empowerment for the fulfillment of the Great commission (Christological anointing) which the leader and the believer need.

6.0 SUMMArY/ COnCLUSiOn i. In ancient Mediterranean cultures,

anointing was the act of pouring or smearing an oil or cream on a person, for cosmetic, medical, magical or ritual purposes.

ii. It is first documented in the Old Testament (Gen 28: 18) as the earliest reference.

iii. Later, not only objects were anointed but priests (Ex 30: 26 -32) Kings (1 Sam 10:1) Prophets (1 Kings 19:16) and lepers (LEV 14: 1-18)

iv. Three distinct anointing from the Old Testament have their type in the New Testament. Viz the lepers anointing, priestly anointing and Kings anointing. These are symbolic.

v. Anointing oil in the Old Testament had the prescribed materials for its composition

Page 8: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION 8

and no one was allowed to do it except Moses at that time. Exodus 30: 22-33 - It was not to be poured on ordinary

people except Aaron and his sons the priests nor on man’s flesh (symbolizing a carnal or an unbeliever in the N.T)

- The New Testament church replaced the use of anointing oil in setting men apart for leadership with the laying on of hands, (Acts 6:6, 13:3) and also prayers for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:17, 19:6); thus literal anointing in the OT was replaced by the laying on of hands as a symbol of God’s power infused in the person.

- Reference to the use of anointing oil by James in the New Testament (James 5:14) has both two thoughts – VIZ : the medicinal application, with the Jewish cultural background and he symbolic application which brings in view the presence of the Holy Spirit to heal the sick. However, the healing power is not the literal anointing oil, but the prayer of faith which causes the healing and miracle.

- Jesus is “the anointed “(GK Christ)”often used in the New Testament, The metaphorical sense denotes His Davidic Messianic rule. The anointing refers to the designation of Jesus and empowering for His task.

- The anointing of God is God’s power in the believer on leader for the work of service, not literal anointing. It is God Himself in man using Him to fulfill specific work to His glory. The believer or leader becomes, “the anointed” servant to lead or be at the forefront for the task.

- The anointing to lead in the New Testament church as discussed is no more than the power of the Holy Spirit enduing the leader to operate in his or her gifting and not literal anointing oil poured on a person. The Holy Spirit has come to abide in the believer and the leader need not to source strength from inanimate objects or points of contacts. Strength for God’s work and help should be sort from the throne room of God through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (Hebrews 4:16)

toPiC: INCREASING IN THE ANOINTING FOR DIVINE HEALINGTEXT: Lk.2:22; Lk.4:14-15; Acts4:31-33, Ezek.47, 2Pet.1:5, Is.53; 2Pet.2:24.

intrODUCtiOnThe Christian life is a progressive life. Walking with God and in the things of Spirit Of God are also progressive in nature. The Bible expects and demands growth from all who are disciples as proof of an authentic relationship between them and the Triune God (John 15:1-7)

Every Christian is expected to grow in the grace and knowledge of God, faith in God, obedience to God and His word, grow in holiness, love for God and Neighbours, faithfulness and many other virtues. (2Pet.3:18; 2Pet.1:5)

WHAt iS AnOintinG?In the context of this presentation, the anointing may be defined as the “ empowering of the Spirit Of God for supernatural accomplishments. It is theHoly Spirit at work in the believer, producing extra-ordinary results. It is God’s power that equips His servants to do exploits, the outflow of the Holy Spirit through an ordinary human vessel( 2Cor.3:5). That tangible presence of God’s power upon a believer’s life and ministry (Lk.4:18).

WHAt iS DiVinE HEALinG?Divine healing is the act of God, through the person of Jesus Christ and the prayers of believers. It is where a person is healed physically and/ or delivered from emotional, mental or spiritual affliction through an act of faith or prayer( 1Pet.2:24, Is.53:5, Jam.5:14-

15). Most often it is seen as a physical healing of sicknesses or deformities etc but it is not restricted to the physical.

It is associated with the atoning work of Christ and it is seen as an integral part of our redemption.

The healing in the gospels are referred to as a “sign” to prove Jesus’ divinity and to foster belief in Him as the CHRIST.

JESUS told his followers to heal the sick and stated that such signs as healing are evidenced of faith.

The gift of healings is part of the spiritual gifts under the power gifts.

JESUS CHriSt OUr PErFECt MODEL FOr GrOWtH AnD inCrEASE in AnOintinG (Lk.2:40)Jesus Christ in His earthly ministry had different levels and dimensions of encounters that seem to buttress the fact that He increased in the anointing of God as hundred percent human being. Though he was conceived of the Holy Spirit, yet he needed to be baptized by the Holy Spirit “ come upon Him in the form of a dove”(Matt.4).

A. At water baptism, the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus Christ (Matt.3:13-17)

Page 11: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

B. After his 40day fast, He came down from the mountain FULL OF POWER, AND HIS NAME WAS KNOWN ABROAD( Lk.4:14-15)

C. At the Mount Of Transfiguration, “ his face shown like the sun, and His rain net was as white as light” ( Matt.17:2)

tHE APOStOLiC MODEL OF inCrEASinG in tHE AnOintinGSimilarly the events in the life and ministry of the early Disciples suggests that they encountered the power and anointing of God at different platforms.

1. The breathing of Jesus upon the early Apostles ( John 20:21)

2. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit ( Acts 2:4)3. The Empowerment with boldness, signs

and wonders with earth shaking impact.( Acts 4:31-33)

tHE riVEr OF GOD in tHE BOOK OF EzEKiELIn chapter forty-seven of the book of Ezekiel, we see a graphic description of the different levels in the walk in the RIVER OF GOD- a typology of the Holy Spirit and walking in the different measurements are a type of our walk with the Spirit Of God and His anointing.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE WORD “Again he measured a thousand” at each level. The Ankle Deep - a type of Baptism in the Holy Spirit( Acts 2:4)The Knee Deep - a type of the Great power (Acts 4:31-33)The Loins Deep- exceeding great power (Eph.1:18-20)The Immeasurable Deep - coming to the fullness in stature of Christ. (Is.11:2;Rev.1:4)

PrACtiCAL StEPS tO inCrEASinG tHE AnOintinGBe baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit( Acts.1:8; .2:4 Eph.5:18)Be a Person Of the Word of God( Josh.1:8)Be a person of prayer/fasting.Associate with people who operate in the gift of healings and deliveranceRead the Gospels and the Book Of Acts and model yourself after Jesus and the Early Apostles.Practice and exercise the gift as often as possible.Appreciate that it is one of the ways to perpetuate the ministry of Jesus.

SPECiFiC WAYS tO inCrEASE tHE AnOintinG FOr DiVinE HEALinG1. Be filled with the fruit of love and

compassion for the sick, oppressed. (Matt.9:36; .14:14)

2. Grow in faith and your convictions that healing is for today.(Mal.3:6; Mk.16:15-18; Lk.4:14-18, Lk10:7-10; Heb.13:8)

3. Make your yourself available at places and services where divine healing is needed (Acts 8:35ff)

4. Walk and be involved in evangelistic outreaches( Mk.16:19-20)

5. Exercise your gift at any given opportunity (unless restrained by the Holy Spirit).(Acts3:3-7)

6. Practice the spiritual discipline of Bible reading/memorization ,prayer and fasting as a lifestyle( Mat.17:19;Mk.9:28)

7. Read the gospels and see how Jesus did it.8. Read other books and listen to tapes of

other healing ministries and ministers( Prov. 13:20; 27:17)

9. Share testimonies of healings. They demonstrate God’s goodness and how the Holy Spirit moves in our lives. It gives

Page 12: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

the Holy Spirit rein to show His glory in greater and greater measure, and it encourages the faith of the minister and his audience.

10. Preach the full gospel and teach on Divine healing as part of our redemptive rights. Create the right environment for the move of the Holy Spirit.

PrOGrESSiOn in HEALinGIt must be mentioned that to be divinely healed can be in progression- there is a process of recovery not every healing is the working of miracles.

In the Greek there are three words used for healing – Sozo, therapeuo, and ioamai .

Sozo implies salvation, rescuing, restoration for the three components of a human being- spirit soul and body. This most often translated as “save” but a few times as heal.

Therapeuo is used to mean “cure”. This where we get our word therapy. It speaks of gifts of healings because there are many ways the Lord heals, and there are almost always a process. In the New Testament it is translated “heal”.

Iomai is an instant miracle of healing. It means to heal by one way and one way only- miraculous power. When this word is used it denotes healing that encompasses a release of God’s anointing and authority (especially over the demonic) to perform a miracle of healing. This is primarily how Jesus operated in His earthly ministry (Matt.9;Mk5;Lk8)

COnCLUSiOn “God’s method is man.” Reinhard Bonke made this statement.

God is in the healing business, and the believer is God’s agent of healing. Divine healing has always been part of the New Testament Christianity and will remain so until God’s kingdom is made manifest physically on earth in the millennium.

Page 13: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

intrODUCtiOnThe personal life of a Christian minister/ leader, is very important in the sight of God-why? This is because, it is He who called you to lead His people. As a leader, you have been given the greatest privilege and responsibility in all the world: called by the Sovereign Lord and Majesty of the universe.

Apostle Paul, admonishing young Timothy clearly stated this in 1 Tim. 3:1 – “The saying is true and irrefutable: If any man (eagerly) seeks the office of a bishop (superintendent, overseer), he desires an excellent task(work)”- Amp. Bible.

Consider the following:a. Is 43:10; Jer. 1:5-7; Jn. 1:6 – You are chosen

by God Himself. He has chosen you to be His representative on earth.

b. Jn. 15:16, 1 Tim. 1:12 –You are chosen by the Lord Jesus Christ. He has chosen you to go and bear fruit among others.

c. Acts 20:28 –You are chosen by the Holy Spirit of God. He has chosen you so that, He can live within you –His instrument –His channel –His person through whom He can live and work on this earth, in this dispensation.

In this regard however, Christian leaders must know and understand that, if we are not drawing fresh strength each day from the

Lord, we can easily dry up. But if we want to be fruitful in the ministry, our union with Him is vital (Jn. 15: 1-8,16).

“Leadership is exciting and exacting, and spiritual leaders have to give themselves unstintingly to meet the needs of their people. Unless our inner lives are renewed, and replenished, there will be little depth in our ministry”.1

Remember, God uses His word, people and circumstances to mould leaders. All three are indispensable for character development. God’s word provides the trUtH we need to grow –God’s people provides the sUPPort we need to grow and CirCUMstanCes provide the environment we need to practice Christlikeness.

If you study and apply God’s Word; connect regularly with other believers/ leaders; and learn to trust God in difficult circumstances, I guarantee, you will become more like Jesus. “God is far more interested in what you are than in what you do. He is much more concerned about your character than your career, because you will take your character into eternity, but not your career” 2. (example of 1 Cor. 3:1-3).

Therefore, in this write-up, as we study the personal life of the Christian leader, we will look specifically at his/her body, mind and heart, which make him/her an instrument or vessel, God uses to demonstrate His power and might to humanity.

We will also look at the leader and the ministry of God’s anointing as an “unction to function”. Additionally, we will try to draw some practical experiences from the scriptures and in our personal ministry.

tHE MiniStEr’S / LEADEr’S BODYBefore you accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your saviour, you did what you wanted with your body. You gave it over to such things as; immorality, drunkenness, greed and a host of other evil things.

But now, since you have accepted Him and committed your life to Him, He owns your body and spirit. Your body and spirit belong to Him (1 Cor. 6:19-20). He bought and purchased your body on the cross. Your body now becomes the Temple for God’s presence, for the indwelling of God’s Holy Spirit. You have it, but God owns it. Therefore, consider your body as a living sacrifice as stated in Rom. 12:1-2 –a living sacrifice. What then does a ‘living sacrifice’ mean ?

a. A living sacrifice means; your body sacrifices its own desire and live for God –that means, your body lives a holy, righteous, pure and moral life for God. Your body does not pollute, dirty, nor contaminates itself with the sins and corruptions of the world. Your body is sacrificed and lives for God as He commands.

b. A living sacrifice means; a constant, continuous sacrifice, not just an

occasional dedication of your body. You do not sacrifice your body today, and then take it back into your hands and do your thing tomorrow. You dedicate your body to live for God and keep on living for God, right now and wherever you are.

c. A living sacrifice means; your body lives for God for serving Him. Your body gives itself to the work of proclaiming the love of God and of ministering to a world engulfed in sinful behavior. Therefore, preach Christ and Him crucified.

Additionally, a Christian leader must discipline and subject his/her own body to Christ, lest you become a castaway. Discipline, to my understanding means; as a leader, you give yourself instructions, set for yourself laws and regulations, and control yourself to obey them, without any outside instructions.

As a leader, you must not live a carnal, fleshly life. A carnal, fleshly life demonstrates and proves that you are not genuine, and will be disqualified (1 Cor. 9:24-27). “You must walk the talk”.

Also, you can control your body by refusing to give in, no matter the pain –by doing exactly what the discipline athlete does. “How much energy, effort, time and dedication does an Olympic athlete put into his training? His sport is his life –unequivocally so. So it is with you. How much more work would get done for Christ if ministers would exercise their bodies? The truth is this; we could exercise our spirit to godliness much more if we exercised our bodies on a regular and consistent basis. Begin an exercise program today, be consistent and you will be physically fit –pleasing the lord”.3

tHE MiniStEr’S/LEADEr’S MinDThe Bible says; Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is –His good, pleasing and perfect will –Rom 12:2.A Christian leader’s first step in spiritual growth is to start changing the way you think. Change always start in the mind. “The way you think determines the way you feel, and the way you feel influences the way you act”. 4

Apostle Paul clearly stated this in Philp. 2:5-11 (Amp. Bible). To be a good leader, you must develop the mind of Christ. Reading from 1 Cor. 14:20; Rom. 8:5-8,14, you can describe this change of mind as a ‘mental shift’. What then is a Mental Shift?a. Shift from self-centered thinking to other-

centered thinking –Philp. 2:4-5. Your goal is to figure out where others are in their spiritual journey and then do whatever will bring them a step closer to knowing Christ -1 Cor. 10: 31-33.

b. Shift from local thinking to Global thinking. God is a global God –and has been caring about the entire world –Jn. 3:16-17. The first way to start thinking globally is to begin praying for the world and some specific countries –and then move out with the Gospel message –Acts 1:8.

c. Shift from thinking of excuses to thinking of creative ways to fulfill your commission. If you are willing, there is always a way to do it; ‘where there is a will, there is a way’. Creative thinking, and not excuses has to do with knowing, understanding and obeying God –the one who has called you -Gen 18:9-12; Ex 4:10-17; Jer. 1:4-19. Whether it was Sarah, claiming she was too old to be used by God, Moses, claiming he cannot speak, or Jeremiah, claiming he

was too young, God rejected their excuses. My personal example in the ministry at one of the stations I served, proofed that, negative thinking and excuses, at times create hindrances to God’s work. (Gospel rally in a village where three children of a fetish priest accepted Jesus Christ as their lord and were baptized. Now, they are officers/leaders in a village assembly). Be a creative thinker, allow God to use you. Hear from Him and let Him lead you. Move away from negative thinking to positive thinking, and you will be an excellent Christian leader –Philp 4:8.

nB: You can also be a “second chair” thinking leader – example of Abishai -1 Sam. 26:6, Aaron and Hur – Ex 17:12.

Who are those “second chair” thinking leaders? They are:a. Those who are not looking for

reCoGnition; they only care about being faithful in the ministry. They rejoice for those who are recognized and support them enthusiastically.

b. Those who are not looking for Positions; they are more concerned about being committed. They are loyal to the cause, they are committed to the leaders; they stand in the background assisting and empowering those who are called to be in front.

c. Those who are not looking for CoMPLiMent, thank you and congratulations. Instead, they are full of compliments and thank you for those who are around them and leading.

nB: The church today does not need more gifted people. Instead, we need more humble people who can be faithful from behind,

Page 16: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

and be content –simply by knowing they are serving God and contributing to the cause of the organization. “There is no such thing as superstars in the kingdom of God. There are great leaders, but those leaders are not alone. They are great and do great things because of the great people that support them”. 5

tHE LEADEr AnD A MiniStrY UnDEr OPEn HEAVEn (The Unction to Function)The early church may not have anointed people physically with oil to set them apart for different leadership roles in the church, but they did lay hands on them to do this. It could be said that the laying on of hands in the New Testament replaced anointing with oil in the Old Testament, because they both symbolically represent the impartation of the anointing of God and consecration of the people to Him.

Therefore, a leader in God’s church, without His anointing will be unable to produce any lasting fruit for His kingdom. “It is only as God’s leaders move with the anointing they have received from Him that they can do what He asks them to do. The most important aspect of any leader’s ministry is not how they can flow with the anointing of God that is on their lives”. 6

Example of Apostle Paul as recorded in Acts 9a. Vrs.17 –Ananias, upon God’s instructions

laid hands on Paul as a sign of the Holy Spirit anointing for service.

b. Vrs.18 –Apostle Paul now had this anointing from God (A direct open heaven to start the ministry). Remember the source of his anointing –it was a genuine one. Consider Matt. 25:8-9, about the ten virgins…...the source of a Christian leaders anointing is very, very important.

c. Vrs.19 –Though Paul had the anointing from God, yet he had time to “wait upon God and with His disciples”.

d. Vrs.20-21 –when Paul received the anointing, heaven drops the Good News (Gospel)into his heart. He then understood who Jesus was and proofed to all that, Jesus was Christ and also the son of God –true Gospel indeed. It’s all about Jesus, and no one else.

e. Vrs.22-31 –these verses show that, a Christian leader with the anointing of God must; - Be powerful in preaching the Gospel - Able to bring followers to follow Jesus

Christ - Be fearless and preach in the name of

Jesus - Be bold enough to stand as a leader –

not being swayed - Be a leader who will help build the

kingdom of God - Be a “peace maker” and not a “trouble

maker”

COnCLUSiOnAs Christian leaders, we need to be aware of who or what we really are and how other people perceive us. Self-awareness is a real gift of the Holy Spirit. The reason for this is that some of our personality traits can get in the way of our ministry, e.g. if we are moody and quick tempered. We need to be aware of these problem areas and give them over to God so that, He can help control our temperaments. The practice of our ministry calls for a life of discipline and personal training. This usually starts not in public, but in the deeply personal and private areas of our lives.

A TRUE leader must lead from the body, heart, mind and spirit that are at tuned to his/her creator and is led by the power of the Holy

Page 17: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

Spirit. Also, a sacrificial and selfless nature as well as the wisdom to lead come from Him –Jas. 3:17. “If we want effective, just and qualified leaders in our world today, we must become men and women who are filled with God’s spirit and are led by His will”. 7.

Years back as an elder of the church, I had the opportunity to walk closely with Prophet P.B. Appiah-Adu. He will at times invite me to join him for prayers before any meeting, including open-air gospel programs. After such prayers, you see “fireworks” in our ministrations. I had the opportunity also to start my ministerial work with Apostle R.A. Addison in the eastern region. He has been a coach and a mentor to me all these while. I urge you therefore, brothers and sisters in the Lord, to help restore just, effective, and spirit-led leadership to your churches, and the world by first submitting yourself to the Supreme leader and Creator of leaders –The Lord God Almighty –Amen!

God bless us all.

intrODUCtiOnThe main Theme for this conference “The Anointing to Lead (Raising Spiritual Giants) is very appropriate in our time. Without the anointing of the Spirit, by whom we are quickened and sanctified, we cannot possess eternal life. Quite clearly, without the anointing of the Holy Spirit, we cannot serve God, for it is only from the Spirit that we derive the necessary power. Through the Power of the Holy Spirit we can do greater works, as Jesus assured us in John 14:12,16.

However, the Anointing is driven by Integrity of the Heart. It is by the death of our ‘self ’ and an increasingly closer communion with the Lord that the Spirit can convey to us Power (Ps 51:17, Act 1:8, 41:31, 6:3, Jn 14:26)

If we fully yield ourselves into His hands and are prepared to pay any price required, He will truly show us the way in which He desires us to experience, through the anointing of the Holy Spirit, the Infinite Greatness of His Power and will anoint us afresh for every new task (Isaiah 57:15).

Brethren there is a price to pay for the anointing to flow in our lives and that price boarders around our integrity. Leaders are faced with integrity crises when they lack self-control, common ones, being Pride, Egotism, Jealousy, Popularity, Infallibility, Prosperity and Indispensability issues.

The Holy Ghost Anointing is to be used for the common good. Paul sounds the warning “Least, when I have preached to others I myself should be disapproved (castaway) 1 Cor 9:27

To Paul, all victory is in the cross and if a man is a preacher and a worker of Christ/God and does not look to Christ and the cross and even make the cross the emphasis of his calling he will conclude as a disappointed servant. For all leaders Jesus Christ and Him Crucified should be our basis and focal point, even as anointed servants to drive us in service to Him (1 Cor. 2:2). Christ humbled Himself and became obedient to Death even the death of the cross. Therefore God has exalted Him to the Highest place (Ph. 2:6-11). Anointing with Humility is a mark of Integrity leading to exaltation to the highest level of attainment before God.

For my delivery on the subject ‘Anointing and integrity to Lead’ I will base my submission on David the great King of Israel who through the several anointing preserved his Integrity before God, even though he had his failures. Now let us start with David the Great King of Israel as we examine the topic; Anointing and Integrity to Lead!”

a way they had ignored God. (Ps. 78:32-39, 40-41, 1 Samuel 4:1-22 God took an action by installing David as King, from the tribe of Judah rather than the tribe of Ephraim (which, as a descendant of Joseph might have seemed a more likely candidate, (Gen 49:10, which foretold exactly this).

David the Lord’s Servant was appointed for a special purpose on behalf of his people (Ps 89:20, 132:10, 144:10). He thus received three (3) special anointing (1 Samuel 16:12-13, 2 Samuel 2:1-4, 2 Samuel 5: 1-5) in order to merit that call. He went through several grooming. Before his first anointing he was ‘A nobody’, (1 Samuel 16:11) noticed but Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers who looked in the Eyes of Samuel as more Noble. (1 Samuel 16:12-13).

B. David’s integrityi. His Humility and Honesty

After his anointing as King by Samuel he went back to the sheep. He did not brag about with Kingship styles and say ‘I am the King over you.’ He went back to the sheep and Saul the King recognized it (1 Samuel 16:18-19; 1 Samuel 17:20). His humility merited his Anointing and made him later the greatest king ever in Israel. He was whole so he went back to what he was made off. “Integrity has been described as the state of being whole and undivided or the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.” He was honest to duty of being a shepherd and was humble to return to that course even after receiving the anointing.

“If we are honest, and when we

measure ourselves by the life of our Lord who humbled Himself even to death on the cross, we cannot but be overwhelmed with the tawdriness (poor quality) and shabbiness and even the vileness of our hearts. As we see our pride in boasting excluded, pride I abase; you would say, I’m only a sinner, Saved by Grace.” (Oswald Sunders). (Phil. 2:5-11)

Pride goes before a fall. We are Nobodies, who have been noticed like David by God and let us as leaders sing the tune, ‘Only a Sinner Saved by Grace.’ David went back to the sheep! He remembered where he came from.

ii. submission to saulDavid after slaying Goliath, submitted to Saul, who could not face Goliath. He sent for David; “And Saul took him that day and did not let him return to his father’s house…… so David went wherever Saul sent him…..” (1 Samuel 18:2,5). Here is the champion of champions, the slayer of the giant and he went wherever Saul sent him. He was in loyal submission to his King. He served as sort of an intern-incognito a King in the making (without Saul realizing it). He submitted to Authority.God’s hand was on David (Anointing). The Lord was going to use him as the greatest King in the History of Israel, but in order to do that, he had to break him, Horne him and sharpen him, which included crushing him. David was about to enter the crucible (melting pot) of pain. He did not realize how excruciating the pain will be. He had to start by submission to Saul out of

Page 20: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION 20

his comfort zone of tending the sheep. Leaders must submit to Authority no matter how painful it will be.

Submission to God’s word, submission to power of the Holy Spirit, submission to the Lord Jesus Christ, submission as servants, serving our congregations, submission to the elderly, submission to widows and submission to ordinary people in the Nation will always elevate the Leader. David was elevated to become King via submission to his father (Jesse), Saul and the entire Nation of Israel to whom he laid his life to face Goliath. Submission to God all the time is the key to elevation and David found that key. We as Leaders should be prepared to lay down our lives even to death as anointed servants for Christ sake as Paul did. (Acts 21:10-13)

iii. David’s Total Dependence on God“You came to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the Name of the Lord of Host, the God of the Armies of Israel, whom you have taunted. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands…… that all the Earth may know that there is a God in Israel.” (1 Samuel 17:41-46) When we are intimidated we even forget how to pray. We focus on the odds against us and we forget whom we represent. David, didn’t try to impress Saul, he did not try to impress the Army of Israel, he did not try to impress anybody and he met Goliath with a sling and a stone and killed him because he depended on God.

Through his dependence on God,

David was raised to become a Giant himself, Spiritual giants in our times are trained through the giants, who through the anointing depend on God.” If you try to tackle the giant in the flesh you will lose. But if you have spent sufficient time on your knees you will be stable to face him because your trust is in Him, The Lord God Almighty.

Never, ever forget this: the battle is the Lord’s.He was in layal submission to his King.

C. David’s Leadership skillsDavid’s Leadership succeeded through a two-sided coin of the Heart and hands. (Ps. 78:32-39). David’s heart and hands implies inward integrity and outward skill. He was labeled a Man after God’s own Heart. In our times he will be a super hero.

i. The first quality God saw in David was spirituality from the heart. That is a person whose life is in harmony with God. His heart had been completely taken over by God. A heart that is owned and occupied by God is a Holy Heart and spiritually inclined. It slows that he was spiritual touched even before the actual anointing he received because God knew his Heart. (Ps 51:17, Is 57:15)

“For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the Earth that He strongly support those whose Heart is completely His” (2 Chronicles 16:9). As leaders we need a completely surrendering of our Hearts to the Lord God and that will make us Humble to

Page 21: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

2018 CONFERENCE BROCHURE 21

do His work. “He also chose David His servant and took him from the sheep fold. He chose David in his Low Estate (Ps 78:70), a humble servant of Godly Character in the Heart. God looks at the Heart First.

ii. C.S. Lewis defined Integrity as “Doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” God trained David in solitude away from Houses and crowds of people. So he shepherded the ewes and the suckling lambs according to the Integrity of his heart, and guided them with skillful Hands. His hands were always on the sheep guiding them with skill. His hands were clean and untainted.

If our hands are tainted to do the wrong things on the sheep we have failed the Integrity Test. Example, touching church money or doing Immoral acts. God needs the skillful hands which is right before God, so as not to disturb the anointing. (Act 5:3, Act 7:51, Eph 4:30, and 1 Thes 5:19). David describes his life in solitude in the desert by how he rescued his sheep from Lions and Bears. He was a man with supernatural Spiritual Hands to deliver and offer safety.

Secondly, he was prepared to die for his sheep at any time.

Thirdly he had the focused eyes to see the enemy coming to release its deadly blow on the sheep.

He had the ability to choose the right stone to inflict the deadly blow on Goliath. He had the ability to

stretch the sling and aim rightly to the position of Goliath to hit him on the forehead. He had the strength to use the huge sward to cut off the Head of Goliath. All with his skillful hands because it was untainted. The hands of David played the harp to drive evil Spirits from Saul and to write and create numerous Psalms for the benefit of mankind. He had anointed hands to move the World.

David had good hands to do a proper Handing Over for his son Solomon. Some leaders do not do the proper handing over before they leave the scene.

D. integrity Crises in Contemporary Ministryi. Substituting the Anointing for Money/

Fame/ Possession/ Greed/ Prosperity Ministration and Gluttony. When the anointing is used for personal gains the consequences is Punishment because God cannot be deceived (James 1:12-16). If you think you are standing be careful you do not fall (1 Corr. 10:12, 1 Pet 5: 8-9)

ii. Integrity of the Tongue (Words)James spoke of the tongue being restless Evil full of Deadly poison which is difficult to tame. (James 3:8)David spoke words to Joab for Israel to be counted which was against God’s word and it became poison and on that basis 70,000 souls were lost. Leaders who wade into politics may cause a great Earthquake upon the church, themselves and the entire Nation. (James 3:1-13). Politics is good but remember your membership

Page 22: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION 22

is across all party lines.

iii. David’s Excellent Leadership• His Leadership was a combination of

both Heart and Hands. To have one without the other leads to a failure. It is from the inner self of the heart the hands receive anointing.

• David always consults from within, from God before he goes on all Battles and wars.

• The hall mark of Humility and brokenness of heart led him always to repent of his sins and was restored and sustained on his throne. (2 Samuel 12:13, Gal 6:7-8)

iv. Keys to Excellence in Leadership• Value Excellence – God made you

who you are, do not down grade that value (2 Samuel 22:32-33, 2 Samuel 12:2-3)

• Remaining committed to the cause of your call – (2 Samuel 17:46, Ps 23)

• He was dependent on God – Ps 16:8• Show consistency in your dealings

with others. For the Spirit is given for the common good of all. (1 Corr. 12:7)

• To Jonathan, David never wavered with the Love he had for him, despite the obstacles and threat to his life by Saul, Jonathan’s father. (1 Samuel 20:16-17)

• Value of Faithfulness• Faithfulness is a value of character that

applied to all shades of Leadership. Each of us has talents, but we must be faithful to use them. Faithfulness in our marriage life holds value to our integrity in our leadership.

v. David’s Prayer Life

He considered his integrity as paramount to his general Rulership and constantly prayed to sustain it. “Let Integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait on you” Ps 26:21. “As for me, I will walk in my integrity redeem me, and be merciful unto me” Ps 26:11

“Judge me, O Lord; for I have walked in my integrity; I have trusted also in the Lord; therefore I shall not slide: Ps 26:1

He prayed for divine scrutiny and Redemption in passages of Ps 26.

A leader should not look on himself as complete and in his prayers let God scrutinize his general life as often as possible.

The Hymn of Psalm 139: 23-24 makes the leader sober to reflect on his Integrity.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart today; Try me O Lord and know my thoughts I pray. See if there be some Wicked way in me; cleanse me from every sin and set me free.

vi. Integrity - The Job Factor “Till I die I will not put away my Integrity from me, I hold fast my righteousness and will not let it go, my heart does not approach me for any of my days” Job 27:4-6Job was prepared to hold onto his integrity till he died.May Leaders of this contemporary time say this consistently till they die.

vii. Displaying Integrity and Sound EthicsDisplaying Integrity is the Hall mark to success. Character reflects the very heart and soul of a leader. David Led his people with “Integrity of Heart” is a good description of Godly character which comes from within. Passages such as 1 Tim 3:8-13, 2 Peter 1:3-9, Acts 6:3-5, and Gal 5:22-23 (fruit of the Spirit), provide requirements that characterizes Every Christian behaviour and displays Integrity and sound Ethical values. (Ps 8:72, 1 Tim 3:1-7, Titus 1:6-9, 1 Pet 5:2)

COnCLUSiOnSelf-control is an engineering Integrity tool, “Which is a way of life in which by the Power of the Holy Spirit Anointing the Christian is able to be Temperate in all things because he does not let his desires master his life. It is impossible to permanently defeat the leader who exercises self-control. Integrity is love’s Masterly.

The Christ like leader knows that Self-Control is important because Lack of self-Control by the Power of the Holy Spirit (Anointing) Destroys Leadership” John Haggai

The underlined are my insertion: Now let’s conclude by sound practical experiences in that life of others.• Billy Graham’s simplicity earned such

He died of National Courses even though his Health deteriorated in recent years. He was a man after God’s heart.

• Moses a fugitive from Pharaoh’s justice a murderer – became a great leader a type of Christ and the greatest Lawgiver. He lived a life of integrity of Heart and Died and his body was so precious to God that he took it away. He was a Leader after God’s Heart.

• David, an insignificant shepherd boy who was considered the least in the family, and almost forgotten, became the greatest King the Nation of Israel has ever produced. He lived as a man after God’s heart with skillful hands.

• Gideon, a coward, was threshing wheat for his father when the call came for him to rise and become a deliverer of his Nation. His response to this challenge was, “My clan is the weakest in Israel and my family is poor, and I am the least likely candidate in my family” Judges 6:15. Yet Gideon became one of the greatest leaders in his generation fighting and winning a war over the Medians with touch lights, trumpets and empty Jars. Judges 7:16.His heart was right with God.

• Abraham Lincoln (The 16th President of

intrODUCtiOnIt cannot be overemphasized that God is ever and more willing to give than we can receive, but our iniquities have separated us from God and these have resulted to unsatisfied nature of man. The heart of man is proud and carnal. It always seeks to please itself in any opportunity that will be presented in human life. This leads to self-aggrandizement, projecting and promoting the world rather than focusing on the Master’s task. As a result of this “some men of God” instead of preparing the flock for the kingdom of God they rather gather people for a reward in a hell fire. Our presentation today will center on the distractions to one’s ineffectiveness in ministry hence the hindrances to the anointing and unacceptable worship that permeates into the church of God today.

The word HinDranCe can be defined as a situation or an act of an individual or group of people that serves as an obstacle, barrier, impediment, delay, complication or stoppage to a mission or vision set out within a stipulated period of time.

ANOINTING on the other hand can be seen in two categories.1. Material Anointing- The use of oil, Ruth

3:3, Luke 7:46 and Micah 6:15. 2. Spiritual Anointing - This is with the

Holy Spirit conferred upon Christians by God. (2nd Cor. 1:21). This expresses the sanctifying the influence of the Holy

Spirit upon priest and devoted men and women. Due to man’s unwillingness to abandon sins which prevents his infilling such as a. The Prayerless Spirit -Mark 9:29 b. The Immature spirit –Mark 9:32 c. The self –seeking spirit – Mark 9:34d. The sectarian spirit-Mark 9:38e. The Lazy spirit- Luke 9:32f. The Foolish- Luke 9:33g. The Intolerant- Luke 9:54h. The selfish spirit- Luke 9:59.

rELiGiOUS trADitiOnThis is a situation where one’s religious affiliations, hermeneutical position of the Bible and traditions will not aLLoW for certain practices and operations of the Holy Spirit or power of God. In the early 1970s, an Episcopal pastor who was full of the Holy Spirit in the United States of America became so excited about the visitations of the power of God through faith filled thrilled that his wife had experienced a physical healing. Upon sharing his experience with his Bishop, he was described as someone suffering from mental challenge and was recommended and referred to a psychiatrist .Religious people who are always stacked to one way of doing things might be locking up the potency and power of the Holy Spirit. For one to receive the Spirit infilling, he or she must for go of his or her traditions and always approach the throne of Grace with a new and clean heart expecting a divine visitation of the Holy Spirit.

CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION 26

LACK OF trUtHFULnESS AnD LiVinG tHE WOrD OF GOD Unfortunately, it is very difficult to see truth been preached in our pulpits and practiced in our Christian lives. A lot of us fail avert our minds to what happened to Ananias and his wife in the New Testament (Acts 5:1-10). Today some Ghanaians have lost their Christian values by using mobile phones to betray the blood of Jesus on the Cross of Calvary. Christian homes are now fields to display professional skill of deceit.

Ephesians 4:14-27. Then we no longer are infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15Instead speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. 17 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. 18They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed. 20That ,however , is not the way of life you learned. 21When you heard about Christ and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. 22You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. 25Therefore

each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26“In your anger do not sin”. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27and do not give the devil a foothold.

PriDE tHE LAW Or tHE LEttErS rAtHEr tHAn tHE PrESEnCE OF tHE SPirit OF GODThe world can be said of respected theologians and scholars but only few can be mentioned of the Spirit filled leaders and by extension Christians. Much as it is crucial to study the world of God, it is equally necessary to make time for the effective experience of the Holy Spirit. We need to depend on God’s Grace and His Spirit rather than on our flesh and inadequacies. God’s strength is made perfect when we are weak.

2nd Corinthians 4-6 such confidence we have through Christ before God .5Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. 6He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant –not of the letter but of the spirit; for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life.

LACK OF PrAYErS AnD FAStinG, StUDYinG tHE WOrD AnD USinG OUr SPiritUAL WEAPOnS AnD AMOUrSHow many of 21st century Christians really pray. Most of us talk about prayer but don’t really pray hence the powerless service of some Christians. Are you plugging into the power of liberation, do you have enough in your reservoir to fetch from? Quite number of Christians today only locates their Bible when it is time for church service. Some pastors don’t even read their Bibles frequently. In the physical armies we know when they need to refuel and they make sure that they are properly

Page 27: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

armed same goes for us as Christians, once we give our lives to Christ we are automatically drafted into God’s army. God knows we need to be armed so he has equipped us with all we need but we need to use them or else we will become weak and easy targets for the enemy. The devil is always looking for whom to devour so we need to be vigilant and prayerful.

Ephesians 6:10-18 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.11Put on the full armor of God, so that you can stand against evil schemes.12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with breastplate of righteousness in place,15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.17Take helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.18And pray in the spirit on all occasion with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for the entire Lord’s people.

SKEPtiSM Or intELLECtUAL PriDE In the 1960s a journalist named John Sherrill decided to write a book discrediting the phenomenon of speaking in tongues. But after he interviewed countless people about this experience, his doubts were shattered and he was baptized in the Holy Spirit himself. His book, They speak in other tongues, became a Christian classic. Spiritual experiences cannot

be figured out with the mind. To receive the Spirit’s infilling you must let go of your intellectual argument and display childlike faith (Matt.18:2-4).

UnCOnFESSED SinSAccording to 1st Thes. 5:19, Eph.4:30, we must not quench the Spirit Because He is so holy, our sinful habits and attitudes can cause him to withdraw. It is therefore proper and extremely important for us to walk in constant communion with God, and to be willing to repent quickly when we know we have sinned. Some people “stuff” their secret sins in the closets of their hearts. If you want to be filled with the spirit, you must be willing to open those closets and invite the light of God’s holiness into every dark corner of your life. This is necessary because He cannot dwell in a dark environment.

EMOtiOnAL WOUnDSDue to some psychological challenges that some people suffer from, it is very difficult for the Holy Spirit to really have place in their hearts to work. Some have been abused, others weighted down by anxiety, others grieved or depressed. They need healing first. Like Lazarus on the day he was raised from the dead, they were bound by the grave clothes of the past, and they need to be unwrapped before they can experience God’s full anointing (John 11:44). Healing is often needed before a person can receive the blessing of Holy Spirit. Beloved shall we empty our hearts with pains and allow the Spirit of God to work.

An UnYiELDED SPirit You cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit if you are full of yourself. Some people are too willful. They have not surrendered their plans, finances, relationships or time to God. They have their lives planned out and all they do is

Page 28: Theme: “THE ANOINTING TO LEAD · most High God as priests and we need no literal anointing oil to be set apart for service to God and the Church. 4.1.1 The composition or materials

ask God to do for them is to stamp it. He does not work like. What do we see today about some wedding ceremonies, the would be couple plan their time and all the arrangements and ask the pastor or his church to approve it for them. They don’t want God interrupting their agendas. Yet God is looking to fill hearts that have been emptied and surrendered. Only the fully yielded can experience the fullness of His power. What is God saying in your life and what is your response. Are you Balaam or Balak?

We cannot but notice that the Israelites prepared for worship. Clearly, they did not just fall out of bed and head to service as often happens today. Many Christians never prepare for service but jump to church room for service. No wonder many people leave these activities saying” I didn’t get anything from that church. As has been demonstrated in the parable of the sower in Mathew 13, nothing is wrong with the seed of the word sown in worship; the problem is with the ground of our hearts. Therefore our hearts must be cultivated to worship God. AN UNPREPARED WORSHIP IS UNACCEPTABLE WORSHIP.A. They prepared for worship by

COnCLUSiOnIt is better for us as leaders to be guided and Spirit filled rather than relying on human ideas, procedures and philosophies. Memorization of the Word of God is good but total dependence on the Holy Spirit is equally assuring knowing that we shall one day account for our stewardship.
