Just Do It!
With another awesome Adventure Summer Camp come and
gone, students were able to fully enjoy themselves in Just Do
It club! All groups were able to choose between two games
each gym class and a group vote was conducted to determine
what game they would want to play for their final “gym
class”.
In groups 1-4 the students got the opportunity to vote
between the game of capture the flag, kickball, dodgeball or
soccer with an oversized soccer ball (pictured in the article).
The younger groups were an energetic and cooperative group
of students that exemplified great teamwork throughout the
course of camp!
Groups 5-8 were able to choose between the game of “war”
that combines dodgeball and capture the flag or soccer with
the oversized soccer ball! The students had a wonderful
summer working well with the other group members and
giving it their all in participation of all Just Do It games!
Thank you for an amazing summer and we look forward to
the upcoming school year!

Counselor’s Corner
It is crazy to think that August is here and we are wrapping up
our summer program! This week in the Social-Emotional
Learning block our younger students went on a scavenger
hunt – working together as a team to search for different
animals and help them find their way home to their correct
habitat. Animals ranged from forest creatures, to ocean life,
and farm animals! Students then had the opportunity to
create their own animal to add to the habitats.
Older students played a fun game called, “Evolution.” In this
game, everyone starts as an egg and must find a partner to
play a classic game of “Rock, Paper, Scissor, Shoot!” The
winner of the round advances to the next stage. The stages
are: egg, chicken, dinosaur, rock star, and finally – super
hero! We worked to ensure our whole group became a strong
team of super heroes which meant, super heroes jumped
back in the game to help all friends evolve.
All groups participated in a share out called, “Summer in
Review.” Each student shared their favorite parts of the
summer program. It was so great to hear how much fun
everyone had. Some highlights include, Wingaersheek Beach,
HEAT class, Just Do It class, Post Camp – specifically art and
gym, swimming, making new friends, and of course Canobie
Lake Park. We were so thrilled to be able to pilot the SEL
block this summer and hope to see it return next year.
C.I.T.’s!
This week CIT’s continue to learn new things each week. This
week they learned about leadership and responsibility, and
had an opportunity to be judges at the heat classes and also
an opportunity to run activities for the younger campers by
using the lesson plans that they created the week before.
They worked as a team putting together a motivational
campaign which helped display positivity for the younger
campers. This week we will be attending JP Lick’s and can’t
wait for our final beach trip to Wingaersheek and Legoland.
Have a safe remaining summer see you next year!

Book Worms!
It is incredible what groups 1-8 have accomplished in Book Worms this summer. Can you believe Week 6 has come and gone? Students have been exposed to so many genres, styles and lengths of books. It’s been a pleasure to share my stories with all of them. This week students were read “Flying High” by Julian Edelman. In this story, animals come together to play the greatest game of football you’ve ever seen. Students also revisited some of their favorite Disney Shorts from past week and were able to watch those short stories come alive once more. Groups 1-3 wrote and illustrated their own stories. They gave them a title and remembered to add their names so that readers would know who the author was. After adding details in pencil, they completed the project by adding color. Groups 4-8 finished off the week by adding additional artwork to their sketchbooks. They created artistic renditions of Simba and Pluto. Students were so ecstatic to take their sketchbooks home at the end of the week!
Destination Imagination!
Wow! It is week six already and Adventure Camp is ending. It has been a busy, fun and hot summer for sure! We had a great time in Destination Imagination being little artists and really embracing our creative side. We were able to use a variety of different art mediums to open up a bunch of possibilities in six short weeks. We experimented with different dimensional art projects. We explored, marble art, canvas art, watercolors, clay, fabrics, recyclables and more! Are all time favorite was of course getting messy with slime! It is always a big hit! I was truly proud of the all hard worker these campers put into each class. However, the best part of it was seeing how proud they were of themselves! It has been such a pleasure to work with an amazing group of campers this summer. I wish you all nothing but the best for this upcoming school year! Stay cool and enjoy the rest of your summer with family and friends!

Summer Abroad!
Summer goes just a little too fast at Community Schools! It was a pleasure doing Summer Abroad for another summer program with all the wonderful kiddos! During our Animal Kingdom week, we focused on playing games, doing art activities and educational pieces on animals in our vast kingdom. We learned about blue whales and sharks! For our animal art activity, we created frog art by tracing our hands and assembling all the froggy parts to go “ribbit!” As the week went on, it wouldn’t be Summer Abroad if we didn’t end with trivia. It was a staple that students have loved for the past two years. It really supports students engaging their brains and teamwork to compete with one another. This trivia game requested that students put a staff member in their team name! Some funny names included Juicy Jane’s, Lucky Lucy’s, Fredfrys, MightyCaseys and Noelle Crushers. It was a great way to engage staff and have a laugh! End of summer program trivia categories included, summer staff, field trips, around the U.S, Music and Logos. The students enjoyed reflecting on their summer through fun trivia questions. Summer Abroad will await the next trivia escapade next summer. But for now, it is time to cool off into the school year. Good luck to everyone and Summer Abroad will miss you!
Hollywood!
For the last week of Destination Disney, campers put
on a big show for Family Night. Each group worked
hard rehearsing their best dance from the summer.
Ms. Kelsey had them on stage practicing their
entrances and exits while the CIT, Ms. Angi wrote the
script for the night. Moments before family and
friends walked through the door, Angi and kids from
group 7 and 8 decorated the sides of the stage with
pinwheels and pompoms, reused from the third week
of Destination Disney. In fact, the whole design of the
stage had reuse, and recycle as a theme. The giant
castle was outlined by Ms. Woods and filled in by the
campers using recycled paper from all previous
camps shows.
The performance itself was a hit. Campers were
excited to put on an awesome show after three days
of rehearsing.

Mr. Fred displayed a fantastic slideshow of the camp,
followed by the group performances: Group 1 & 2
sang and swayed to It’s A Small World, with flags,
they colored in art, taped to their backs. Groups 3 & 4
dance to a hopping beat from Coco, the pixar movie,
with guitar backpacks and maracas. To shake things
up, Group 5 turned the lights down low and
performed a glow stick dance to dance remix of A
Whole New World. Group 6 showed their cat claws to
Everybody Wants to be a Cat. Group 7 did a balloon
dance to I’m On Top of the World, by Imagine
Dragons and Group 8 danced to a swinging beat, I
Wanna Be Like You. At the very end the Camp
Counselors surprised the audience with a special free
style dance to Fireball, by Pitbul. Somerville has a lot
of young talent to be proud of!
Got Dirt!
This week students we continued learning about primates. We started the week off by breaking into stations. One group watched a video about monkeys and did ethnography (the scientific description of the customs of individual peoples and cultures, in this case Capuchin monkeys). Specifically we were looking to see how many times they were eating, sleeping, jumping, fighting, and grooming each other. Students were really involved and interested in how similar monkeys are to us. The other station was an activity that explored how primates used tools; students had to find their way to a scented cotton ball, in a bag, in a box. The trick was that they only had one pen (tool) per person. Students figured out pretty quickly that they needed to work together in order to find a way to the cotton ball. It was a lot of fun to watch them try. The last station was one only a couple groups got to, but in that one they had to color and cut out different animals and then glue them to either Madagascar or mainland Africa depending on where they live. The second class of the week, students went on a scavenger hunt around the school each clue was based on previous knowledge from the class. Students had to first find a map of Madagascar (the only home of lemurs) they then had to play four corners with their deer ears. Then they had to use their nose to find a lemon scented cotton ball in the hallway. Then hop like lemurs, remember the layers of the rainforest (forest floor, understory, canopy, and emergent) then hop like frogs, find all of the things that a plant needs to live (air, water, soil, sun). Finally students were given little packets of bean seeds to take home. They have directions: 1. place seen in soil 2. make sure they get enough sun 3. water twice a week It was a pleasure to have your children this summer, thank you for sharing them with me!

High Tech!
This week we have been busy trying our best to cram in as much STEM as possible in our last few days of camp! Our days have been filled with coding on the computer, making slime (always a favorite!), and making marshmallow launchers from popsicle sticks and rubber bands. We made several different kinds of launchers and tested them down the hallway to see which worked the best. Summer camp has been a whirlwind of STEM and we have learned so much because of it. We absolutely can't wait to see what next summer has in store!

H.E.A.T.!
This week’s lesson focuses on the Food Network’s hit show, Chopped Junior. Junior Chefs are given miscellaneous ingredients that do not seem to cook well together, but are asked to create a tasty dish. The class was presented a clip of what the show entails; they pick teams, and then are asked to brainstorm together! Our students in HEAT are prompted do this task within twenty minutes! They will work amongst their peers and staff to create an appetizing dish. Students have a pantry filled with spices and other ingredients they could add to their dish. Taste-testers (staff and CIT) are asked to try each dish and pick the best one. The dishes are judged by presentation, teamwork, and taste. This lesson focuses on creativity, math (measuring ingredients), ELA(reading ingredients) , and team building (working collaboratively with peers). Most of the dishes did not look great, but most of them tasted good. Perhaps, we enjoyed this week the most. Our students and staff look forward to this week because of the fun competition and creativity. They get to be the master chefs and create…… Bon appetite!
