THE KITE IS RULED OUT. Stockton People Can Sec the Races Better on the Regulation Track. LUCK IfTBH THE . SHOKT-ESDERS.. There Was a Falling of the Favorites, and the Men Who Tike Long Uianm Made Plenly of floney. Special to Tite Morxixci Call. Stockton, Sept. 20.— The second day's racing of the fair was poorly attended, and it is evident that the people are not thor- oughly warmed up for the annual carnival. The day was beautifully sunny, with a cool breeze blowing, and the track hard and fast. The racing was somewhat tame, being very one-sided and confined chieily to dis- trict horses in the slower classes. The short-enders' luck seemed to have come with them from Sacramento, and those of them who were induced to make books had ample opportunities for doing so and making sure winnings. The district yearling trot was won by the Mount Vernon nlly Sadie Me, driven in the best time of 3:05%. First rate for a young- ster. Speculation ruled very lively all the after- noon. Tlia directors have wisely retained the services of t tie First Artillery band from Sacramento, and they played selections be- tween the races in their well-Known artistic style. First Race. The opening race was the special trot for local horses, and four came up for the score Lulu, John L. Sullivan, Maude and Amerutn. John L was favorite at £25, Maude brought $7 aud the field $4. There was au even start at tbu fifth attempt, Maude with the poie trotting ahead, a half- length lead of the favorite. This pair led all around to the stretch in the same posi- tion. Douathan r.iade a drive on John ten yards from the wire, and the mare tangled up, finishing first under the wire on a break, an open length in front of John L. Time, 2:40. Lulu was distanced. la the second heat Maude won in a jng, John L breaking at three different stages in the heat. Time, 2:38%. '1 here was a race in the third heat, Billy; Donalhan driving John L right upio Maude, when he broke on tho kstretch and it looked like Maude's race. The Boston boy came very fast in the stretch aeatn and was at Maude's wheels 100 yards froru home, but broke and swerved, frightening the marc, and she mixed it up, too. John Lcaught the quickest, and coining on took the heat by a length in 2:37%. The short-enders were jubilant, as Mauda had been selling at $100 against 525 in the field. The fourth heat foroisbed some excite- ment, the field now selling first choice. John L went out in front and stayed there to the drawgales. Maude broke on the first turn and again on (ha back stretch, but came at a lively rate, gaining on the mieil- Istic equine every second. Just then the latter made a terrible mix up of it and Maude, trotting squarely, passed him and won the heat and race iv a walk. Time, 2:37& SVMMAKY. Stocktov, Sept. 20.— Special trotting race. Five youugsters were driven out for the yearling district trot, Sadie Me, Cham- pionet. KingDent, Lucky Ticket and Mor- ris. The first named was first choice at $25, Lucky Ticket sold out at S8 and the field for $11. King Dent showed the way to the quarter, where he was passed by the favorite, behind whom MillarJ Sauders drove a nice steady beat and won in 3:07%. Lucky Ticket was driven up to him in the lower turn, but broke, and came fast in the stretcn when he got bis gait, but tangled again nearing the wire. Ch&ui- pionet and Morris got the flag. The favorite won the second heat and race from wire to wire In3:05%, going very nicely. Lucky Ticket and Kuijj Deut broke badly at the first turn and wero both shut out. SUMMARY. VOTING GOES MERRILY ON. The Colton Kesidence Now in the Lead. Thirteen Oat cf the Twenty Votes Recorded. Six Private Residences on the List. Which Will Win "Which is the most artistic private resi- dence in .*>an FrancUco?" The vote keep 3 broadening oat. giving in- creased zest to the artistic contest. It is a matter for congratulation that our leading artists differ in their estimate of which is the most artistic private residence. It shows that San Francisco has many wealthy residents who are possessed of a keen appreciation of the beautiiul in archi- tecture. Four more artists have been heard from, S. Lando, Nellie A. Steam?, Carl yon P^r- bandt and James Kahler. Thirteen artists have now sent in their vt.tes and two more residences have been added to the list already published. The vote at present stands as follows: The Colton reaidence : .T Ttip Totfne residence 4 Colonel A. Q. Jlatres' residence 1 The nnc Croclier residence 1 W, 11. Crocker's residence 1 The Flood residence 1 S. Lando brings a new competitor into tbe field. He says: "Trie most artistic private residence in San Franci>co according to my taste Is the \V. 11. Crocker building at the coruor of California and Jones streets." Nellie A. Steams says: "I should point without hesitation to the Colton house. "There are other homes much more pre- tentious more demonstrative, if one may use the term, but for simplicity, grace and refinement of outline it seems tome to be vastly auperior to the many architectural jumbles about our city that are thrown, to- gether with little apparent regard for pro- portion. "This is my impression only, for I have no knowledge of architecture." Carl yon Perbandi differs from the others. Hoft»ys: •'Flood's palace is tnv choice. The buill- ing la monumental. Grand and strong iv tbe idea, it is modeled In its details by a thoroughly artistic mind. "I miss something though. The woik of the sculptor, whose genius would brighten and animate the strong features of the architecture. "Figures or groups in bronze, what col- oristic effects they would add to the great lines of the structure." _ t James Kahler is an admirer cf the Colton residence. "Fur many year?," he says, "I have ad- mired the wonderful proportions of the Colton house on California street, next to Flood's rosidence. "Classic simplicity, purity of style I have always preferred to the brilliancy of richly ornamented modern structures, whosearchl- tectural idea is so often more odd than im- posing. "Of al! the many elaborate residences San Francisco has been beautified with within the last eight years, none seemed to mo excellent enough to overcome the im- pression I have got of the Colton bnildins. "Some small ornaments may be rather weak and so arf, undoubtedly, the lions in lront of the home. But I vote for it ju*t the same." The Colton residence now leads by one vole. It received two out of the four addi- tional votes and the Townereslder.ee, wt)ic;i was in the van, now takes second place. The seven votes yet to come in may bring some of the others more prominently for- ward, but it would seem as if the final de- cision would rest with either tne Coltou ie>iience or Towne residence. LUCK IfTBH THE . SHOKT-ESDERS..

There Was a Falling of the Favorites, and theMen Who Tike Long Uianm Made

Plenly of floney.

Special to Tite MorxixciCall.

Stockton, Sept. 20.—The second day'sracing of the fair was poorly attended, anditis evident that the people are not thor-oughly warmed up for the annual carnival.

The day was beautifully sunny, with acool breeze blowing, and the track hard andfast.

The racing was somewhat tame, beingvery one-sided and confined chieily to dis-trict horses in the slower classes.

The short-enders' luck seemed to havecome with them from Sacramento, andthose of them who were induced to makebooks had ample opportunities for doing soand making sure winnings.

The district yearling trot was won by theMount Vernon nlly Sadie Me, driven in thebest time of 3:05%. First rate for a young-ster.

Speculation ruled very livelyall the after-noon. Tlia directors have wisely retainedthe services of t tie First Artilleryband fromSacramento, and they played selections be-tween the races in their well-Known artisticstyle.

First Race. The opening race was the special trot for

local horses, and four came up for thescore Lulu, John L.Sullivan, Maude andAmerutn. John L was favorite at £25,Maude brought $7 aud the field $4. Therewas au even start at tbu fifth attempt,Maude with the poie trotting ahead, a half-length lead of the favorite. This pair ledall around to the stretch in the same posi-tion. Douathan r.iade a drive on Johnten yards from the wire, and the maretangled up, finishing first under the wire ona break, an open length in front of John L.Time, 2:40. Lulu was distanced.la the second heat Maude won ina jng,

John Lbreaking at three different stages inthe heat. Time, 2:38%.

'1 here was a race in the third heat, Billy;Donalhan drivingJohn L right upioMaude, when he broke on tho kstretch and itlooked like Maude's race. The Boston boycame very fast in the stretch aeatn and wasat Maude's wheels 100 yards froru home, butbroke and swerved, frightening the marc, and she mixed it up, too. John Lcaughtthe quickest, and coining on took the heatby a length in 2:37%. The short-enderswere jubilant, as Mauda had been selling at$100 against 525 in the field.

The fourth heat foroisbed some excite-ment, the field now selling first choice.John L went out in front and stayed thereto the drawgales. Maude broke on thefirst turn and again on (ha back stretch, butcame at a lively rate, gaining on the mieil-Istic equine every second. Just then thelatter made a terrible mix up of it andMaude, trotting squarely, passed him andwon the heat and race iv a walk. Time,2:37&

yearling district trot, Sadie Me, Cham-pionet. KingDent, Lucky Ticket and Mor-ris. The first named was first choice at$25, Lucky Ticket sold out at S8 and thefield for $11. King Dent showed the wayto the quarter, where he was passed by thefavorite, behind whom MillarJ Saudersdrove a nice steady beat and won in 3:07%.Lucky Ticket was driven up to him in thelower turn, but broke, and came fast inthe stretcn when he got bis gait, buttangled again nearing the wire. Ch&ui-pionet and Morris got the flag.

The favorite won the second heat andrace from wire to wire In3:05%, going verynicely. Lucky Ticket and KuijjDeut brokebadly at the first turn and wero both shutout.

Thero were only a couple of starters inthe three-minute class trot, Antioch sellingat 523 to £18 for Cora S. The bett >r» now paid £30 foi Cora S andSIG for Aiitioch. The latter took a slightlead to the quarter, where he broke, movingveiy sorely, and the mare captured thesecond heat in 2:30.

VOTING GOES MERRILY ON.

The Colton Kesidence Nowin the Lead.

Thirteen Oat cf the Twenty Votes Recorded.

Six Private Residences on the List.Which Will Win

"Which is the most artistic private resi-dence in .*>an FrancUco?"

The vote keep 3broadening oat. giving in-creased zest to the artistic contest.Itis a matter for congratulation that our

leading artists differ in their estimate ofwhich is the most artistic private residence.Itshows that San Francisco has many

wealthy residents who are possessed ofakeen appreciation of the beautiiul in archi-tecture.

Four more artists have been heard from,S. Lando, Nellie A. Steam?, Carl yon P^r-bandt and James Kahler.

Thirteen artists have now sent in theirvt.tes and two more residences have beenadded to the list already published.

The vote at present stands as follows:The Colton reaidence : .TTtip Totfne residence 4Colonel A. Q. Jlatres' residence 1The nnc Croclier residence 1W, 11. Crocker's residence 1The Flood residence 1

S. Lando brings a new competitor intotbe field. He says:

"Trie most artistic private residence inSan Franci>co according to my taste Is the\V. 11. Crocker building at the coruor ofCalifornia and Jones streets."

Nellie A. Steams says:"Ishould point without hesitation to the

Colton house."There are other homes much more pre-

tentious more demonstrative, if one mayuse the term, but for simplicity, grace andrefinement of outline itseems tome to bevastly auperior to the many architecturaljumbles about our city that are thrown, to-gether with little apparent regard for pro-portion.

"This is my impression only, forIhave noknowledge of architecture."

Carl yon Perbandi differs from the others.Hoft»ys:

•'Flood's palace is tnv choice. The buill-ing la monumental. Grand and strong ivtbe idea, it is modeled Inits details by athoroughly artistic mind."Imiss something though. The woik of

the sculptor, whose genius would brightenand animate the strong features of thearchitecture.

"Figures orgroups in bronze, what col-oristic effects they would add to the greatlines of the structure."

_t

James Kahler is an admirer cf the Coltonresidence.

"Fur many year?," he says, "Ihave ad-mired the wonderful proportions of theColton house on California street, next toFlood's rosidence.

"Classic simplicity, purity of style Ihavealways preferred to the brilliancy of richlyornamented modern structures, whosearchl-tectural idea is so often more odd than im-posing.

"Of al! the many elaborate residencesSan Francisco has been beautified withwithin the last eight years, none seemed tomo excellent enough to overcome the im-pression Ihave got of the Colton bnildins.

"Some small ornaments may be ratherweak and so arf, undoubtedly, the lions inlront of the home. But Ivote for it ju*tthe same."

The Colton residence now leads by onevole. Itreceived twoout of the four addi-tional votes and the Townereslder.ee, wt)ic;iwas in the van, now takes second place.

The seven votes yet to come inmay bringsome of the others more prominently for-ward, but it would seem as ifthe final de-cision would rest with either tne Coltouie>iience or Towne residence.
