■ Benefits your mental health by raising self-esteem andlowering stress, fatigue, anxiety, and depression

■ Helps you connect with your neighbors
■ Increases your exposure to sunlight, which boosts levelsof vitamin D in your body
Some studies have shown that hospital patients with na-ture views may recover more quickly from surgery. It may

Greenspace in Baltimore City
Baltimore City has many parks, water sources, trails,and gardens. Baltimore City Recreation and Parks oper-ates over 4,600 acres of parkland and 1,200 acres of ur-ban wilderness parkland, 11 city farms, and 2.8 milliontrees. Here are some examples of Baltimore’sgreenspaces.

For example, Patterson Park amenities include walking,jogging, and biking paths; swimming pool; lake; athleticfields; basketball and tennis courts; ice rink; dog park;pagoda; picnic areas; pavilions; play-grounds; city farms garden; and Auduboncenter. Visit the Pagoda (Sundays from12-6PM, mid-April through mid-October)to receive a free guide map for the Patter-son Park Tree Walk. The Tree Walk is a self--guided tour where visitors can see thevarious species of trees inside the park. Inaddition, the Patterson Park Audubon Center connectspeople to nature, especially birds and other wildlife, byoffering free and low-cost programs such as volunteer op-portunities, bird walks, and workshops. Trails. Cylburn Arboretum Woodland Walking Trails,Leakin Park Trail, Gwynns Falls Trail, Jones Falls Trail,Herring Run Trail, Stony Run Trail.
For example, The Gwynns Falls Trail is a 15-mile urbanhiking and biking trail through the Gwynns Falls/LeakinPark urban greenway in west and southwest BaltimoreCity. The trail connects several Baltimore neighborhoodswith tributaries, streams, and parklands. Visitors canwalk, jog, bike, or hike the trail. There are several picnicspots, as well as opportunities for birdwatching and fish-ing. Additionally, a free Gwynns Falls Trail App is avail-able on the Apple App store for navigating the trail.
Water. Canton Waterfront Park, Chinquapin Run Park,Fort McHenry, Fredrick Douglass-Isaac My-ers Maritime Park, Harbor Island Walk, In-ner Harbor Amphitheater, Lake Montebello,Lake Roland, Tide Point, Patterson ParkBoat Lake, Waterfront Promenade (paved7-mile walkway along the Inner Harborfrom Fort McHenry to Canton WaterfrontPark), West Shore Park.
For example, Lake Montebello is a short walk from Her-ring Run Park. Amenities in the Lake Montebello andHerring Run area include paved and dirt trails for walk-ing, jogging, and biking; sledding spots; birdwatching andgroup bird walks; playgrounds; basketball court; picnicareas; reservoir loop; and exercise stations. Friends ofHerring Run offers programs such as bike tours (bikes areprovided for trail rides; suggested $5 donation) and groupbirdwatching walks (free). Additionally, there are various

For example, Druid Hill Park is home to theHoward PeterRawlings Conservatory and Botanical Gardens (3100Swann Dr, Baltimore, MD 21217). Rawlings Conservatoryis a great way to experience nature while staying comfort-able indoors. The conservatory has 5 indoor greenhouserooms and a half-acre outdoor garden with flower beds.Public programs for adults exist such as the “Plants andPeople” series and free guided tours. The conservatory isopen year-round; the hours of operation are from10am-4pm Wednesday through Sunday. Admission to theconservatory is a suggested $5 cash donation. How to use greenspace for health
Here are some tips about gaining health benefits fromBaltimore’s outdoor greenspaces.
Aim for 2 hours per week in nature. Any amount of timespent in nature can improve your health. Spending 2hours per week outside can make a difference. Thismeans spending only about 20minutes per day!
Join a walking group.Walking outsideuses more muscle groups than walking ona flat surface or treadmill. Research sug-gests that walking groups improve bloodpressure, cholesterol, heart rate, and physi-cal functioning. Walking with a group fos-ters social connections, which can boost
mood, lower stress, and fight symptoms of depression.Visit a website such as www.meetup.com to find walkingour outdoor fitness groups in your area. If you are unableto join a group, try to walk with a family member, friend,neighbor, or pet.
Try forest bathing. Forest bathing, or Shinrin-yoku in Ja-panese, is a way to connect with nature by using all 5senses. This practice lowers cortisol (a stress hormone),heart rate, and blood pressure. To practice forest bathing,
have two plants per 100 square feet of indoor space. Tryto have at least one plant in every room.
Surround yourself with color.Decorate your homewith nature’s colors, such as blue and green. These col-ors can remind you of the outdoors and promote asense of serenity and calm.
Listen to nature sounds.Use a white noise machinethat mimics the sounds of waves, wind, or birds chirp-ing. Use CDs or music downloads that play naturesounds. Nature sounds, even if they are artificial, areknown to reduce stress.
Plant a window garden.Window views of nature canimprove your sense of well-being and positive mood. Ifthe view from your window does not include any green-ery, you can create your own by placing plants on yourwindowsill or by planting a window garden with sea-sonal flowers or greenery. If you do not have a greenthumb, you can display pictures of nature in your hometo view.
Create an herb garden. If you do not have the spacefor an outdoor garden, a small indoor herb garden is agreat option. You can use small pots on windowsills togrow fresh herbs. Some herbs don’t need soil and potsto grow; basil, oregano, peppermint, sage, and thymeare examples of herbs that grow when a fresh cutting isplaced in a glass of water. This is an excellent way togrow herbs in the colder months. Fresh or dried herbscan be used as a healthy seasoning for your meals.

Participate in community farms and gardens.TheBaltimore City Farms in the Department of Recreation &Parks offers garden beds for rent to city residents. A gar-den manager is available on-site if you need advice orsupport. City Farms also offers educational programsand social activities for participants (cleanups, cook-outs, and potlucks). There are City Farms at Carroll,Clifton, Dewees, Druid Hill, Cimaglia, Leakin, Patterson,Rockrose, Roosevelt, Light Street � Heath Street, andHeath Street � Charles Street. If you have limited access to greenspace in your com-munity or if the weather is uncooperative with outdooractivities, the following suggestions can help you enjoynature’s benefits indoors.
Keep indoor houseplants. Pollutants from contami-nated ventilation systems, building materials, furnish-ings, and even cleaning products affect indoor airquality. Poor indoor air quality can lead to respiratoryirritation and asthma. Houseplants improve air qualityand eliminate toxins. Some of the best air purifyinghouseplants include the Boston fern, peace lily, ficus,English ivy, and golden pothos. It is recommended to

Using our medical research vehicles, we want to study as manypeople with different backgrounds as we can. We want this study tohelp us understand healthy aging by examining the influences ofdifferent backgrounds on changes in health over time.The informa-tion we gather will help improve health and prevent disabilities. Ourgoal is to gather information to improve health and prevent disabili-ties for people of all backgrounds, particularly in minority communi-ties and communities with limited resources.

Balancing enjoying nature with COVID-19 risk
During COVID-19, please enjoy the outdoors responsi-bly. If you decide to spend time outside, please con-sider these precautions to keep yourself healthy:

■ Visit parks or outdoor areas during off-times, whenthey are less likely to be crowded
■ Wash your hands before and after your outdooractivity
■ Bring hand sanitizer with you
■ Note that during COVID-19, many public restroomsat parks may be closed. Be prepared and use therestroom before you visit the park.
