Welcome to my first edition of The Hair Council magazine!

In this issue you’ll be finding out inside information on London’s Hairdresser of the Year, Luke

Benson, as well as stunning collections from the Ken Picton Art Team, the Francesco Group and Jamie Stevens SRH. We also have interesting columns from David Wright, Mike Taylor and Natalie Allen with advice on employment law, training and managing your own business.

Our Student of the Year finals are creeping up and you can see some of the amazing work that our finalists have produced in the first stage of the competition in this issue. It’s safe to say the competition was stiff, and entries proved that we have very talented hairdressers coming into the industry.

As I would like this magazine to be both entertaining and informative for you all, please feel free to get in touch with me on everything that you’re up to and anything that you would like to be seen in the magazine! Hairdressing and barbering news stories are always welcome, as are those beautiful collections that I know many of you do.

I hope you enjoy!

huge congratulations are in order for the Francesco group as they announced they’ve been accepted onto the government Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers. The rigorous application process meant that the Francesco group was assessed on several areas including: meeting the needs of apprentices and employers; quality of training; performance management; resources and staffing; finances and approaches to safeguarding.

Only training providers on this register can deliver and assess apprenticeship training so this new status will be incredibly beneficial for the chain. Director of Operations, Andrea Owen comments: “it’s such a fantastic achievement to be accepted on the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers.

“At Francesco group we love to see our apprentices progress and always provide personal guidance and monitoring throughout all our courses to help them achieve their goals and be successful.”

PATRiCK CAMERON giVEN iNTERNATiONAL hAiRDRESSER OF ThE YEAR AWARD

We were delighted to hear that Patrick Cameron SRh was presented with the 2017 Tocado Award for international hairdresser of the Year at COSMOBEAUTY in Barcelona last month. Admired for his innovative and imaginative long hair work, Patrick had presented his current ‘ goddess’ collection to enthusiastic crowds earlier in the show.

On receiving his award, Patrick comments: “i feel very grateful to have been chosen to receive this award. Providing

inspiration, education in the latest techniques and showcasing stunning photographic collections to hairdressers globally is something i love to do and to be rewarded for that is fantastic.”

Well done Patrick! it’s so important that the message for state registration gets out to as many people as possible, and achievements like this are a brilliant way to promote the craft and our cause overseas.

Lucky members of Rainbow Room international recently won an all-expenses paid photo shoot, run and organised by The hairdressers’ Charity. Suzie

Mcgill, Dylan Brittain and Diane Carson from RRi, worked alongside Darren Ambrose SRh, photographer Jack Eames and stylist Bernard Connolly to create two collections with six breath-taking images in each.

Darren Ambrose SRh comments: “Unforeseen misfortunes can be devastating and it’s so important that hairdressers have somewhere to turn in times of crisis. To be involved in this project was a massive honour – i’m delighted to be of any help within the process and to help raise money, i can’t speak highly enough of this charity.”

Elected by unanimous vote at the AgM, we’re confident Karine will be an incredibly popular President and will bring her plethora of skills and knowledge as both business owner and creative hairdresser to the role. She says: “i’m really look-ing forward to this new role, it’s a real honour for me. i can’t wait to get started, working closely with the team and council to promote the hairdressing industry and our professional standards.”

She formally took office on 8th May at President’s Night and we can’t wait to see what good she does for our industry. go Karine! We’re all behind you…

How did you get into hairdressing?I always wanted to be in the fashion world, and had a real interest in hair having had many “interesting” haircuts myself! Then my Mum took me to a salon instead of my usual barber, and I loved the whole vibe. The people were cool and it didn’t look like anyone was working! Soon after, I started my apprenticeship at Clipso under the guidance of the late, great Terry Calvert. Since then I’ve worked hard, moved only to better myself, and been fortunate to work with great hairdressers! I’ve built my own brand - Luke Benson Hair - focusing on education, shows and seminars, and have got myself an agent for editorial and TV work.

What do you love most about this industry? The diversity and people. There are so many avenues we can pursue, including ones I didn’t even know about when I started my career! We should surround ourselves with good people, be creative, have integ-rity, and the industry will continually improve. The easi-est way to achieve our goals is by supporting each other’s work… No one is better than anyone else in our subjective trade, so help those who are new to grow and continue to look up to industry figureheads.

We met Luke Benson SRH, the current London Hairdresser of the Year, as he looks forward to the future after starting his own brand, Luke Benson Hair.

We talk advice, social media and critically, the #GetRegistered campaign...

Cool hand Luke

How did winning London Hairdresser of the Year 2016 feel? I can’t really remember! It’s surreal to have that many people applauding you in such a huge venue. I’m so grateful to everyone involved in the journey, and to be added to the list of past winners of that incredible category is something I will always cherish.

What else would you say has been a memorable achievement?Getting into the Fellowship for British Hairdressing F.A.M.E Team! It was something that Terry had told me to do when I first started in this industry, and look-ing at the careers that previous members have had afterwards made it a very proud moment for me. I also had an incredibly driven and organized team along-side me, which, combined with our mentors, made it another very memorable year.

How important do you think social media is for hairdressers and salons today? We’re lucky that it’s so easy to instantly share and discover work from all over the world. However it can be relied on too much, and we need to be careful that

work isn’t only portrayed that way…we need live events and quality work that can be produced without edit-ing. If used properly it’s amazing, but if abused, I can see it being damaging long-term.

What would you tell youngsters entering our industry?Go for it! Find someone or somewhere that inspires you and work hard. Take inspiration from every corner you can, and try to learn something new every day with a smile on your face. And like I was told; be humble and have integrity.

What do you do in your spare time? I spend it with family or friends. My sister’s baby is the BEST, so I try to spend as much time with him as possi-ble as he’s growing up so fast. I also think it’s impor-tant to schedule “me time” into your diary.

Why do you think registration and regulation is so important for the hair industry?Sometimes it can still feel like there is a negative stigma around hairdressing, but there definitely shouldn’t be. There are some amazing businesspeople that have achieved great things, and we have so many oppor-tunities. Pushing for state registration is another step towards us being seen the way we should be.

How do you think we could make more hairdress-ers aware of the #GetRegistered campaign?Continue to do what you’re doing…and we, as hair-dressers, must keep inspiring others to register. The more it’s talked about, the more people will register. What’s next?I want to keep pushing my brand and growing, be creative and inspire others. So, anyone who wants to work with me in some way in the future, please get in touch…Email me: [email protected]

Let me emphasise that an appraisal is a two-way

process.

Looking ahead

“As we enter into summer, it’s time to focus on the rest of 2017. It is important to look ahead, be prepared for employment changes and spend some time planning for potential staffing issues. Let’s look at the recent changes:

Minimum Wage Increases“The increase in the Living Wage from £7.20 to £ 7.50 on 1st April was widely publicised. Far less space was given to the fact that the other wage band rates for the minimum wage also increased in April as well as October. In future years all rates will be revised annually in April. However, current employers have faced a rise in October 2016 and April 2017.

“These are the new rates to be aware of, which became effective from April 2017: 21 +: £6.95 to £7.0518 to 21: £5.55 to £5.6016 to 18: £4.00 to £4.05Apprentice: £3.40 to £3.50

“Make sure you are aware of your wage costs, and remember to take into account theses new wage rates and the potential for staff moving age brackets.

Benefits and Allowances Changes“The statutory rates for maternity pay, paternity pay, shared parental pay, adoption pay and sick pay all increased from April 2017. The weekly rate of Statutory Maternity Pay was £139.58 and rose to £140.98. The weekly rate of Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) also increased from £88.45 to £89.35 from April 2017. To be entitled to all the payments above, the employee’s average earnings must be equal to or more than £113 per week before tax, rising from £112.The rises aren’t significant but with the rise in wages might mean some part-timers now become eligible to benefits like SSP.

Tribunal Costs“Since July 2013, employees have been charged a fee to bring a claim to tribunal.

This has led to a 70% fall in the number of cases put forward. Unison, the trade union, have been trying to have employment tribunal fees ruled unlawful and were due to present the case before the Supreme Court at the time of writing. In 2017, it also became possible for any member of the public to search online for tribunal judgments and get a copy for free. Consider the implications of losing a case when the full details are available to the public...

Staff: Your Most Valuable Resource“Think of your best or most valuable staff member - what profit did they bring in in 2016? You quickly realise how valuable some of your human resources actually are.

“So how do you invest in your best staff to retain them? We know pay is important but, having regular appraisals, training and career development opportunities are equally valued by

staff. Let me emphasise that an appraisal is a two-way process. As much as it is an opportunity for the employer to tell the employee how they are performing, your employee can also share any concerns they have with you.

“It is tempting to assume that having a good commission scheme is sufficient to retain your top staff. However, there is no substitute for asking staff how they might like to be rewarded, e.g. extra holidays instead. Though an extra weeks holiday is both a cost and a loss of revenue, compare this to losing your star employee and you can see that it is potentially a better investment.”

Business advisor David Wright BA (Hons) FIPD, knows his employment law inside out. This edition of The Hair Council magazine, he highlights how April wage increases may affect your business:

students. On the days they weren’t using the academy, I would use it for day training courses for the British Barbering Association. My dream continued to grow and I wanted to start training under my own name, so I formed Mike Taylor education. I was keen to go about this properly, and spoke to VTCT about how to become an Approved Training Centre and I now deliver the VTCT qualifications.

“All of my students do at least 200 haircuts when they are on training programme with me, and I am proud to say that so far, everyone I have taught has gone on to work in a barbershop. I will not let my students go until I am confident that they are ready to work in a barbershop; if not, I will keep them on and continue their training until I can ensure that they will gain employment in the industry. To me, teaching barbering is not just a job – it’s my passion and hobby.

“This year, I launched a new company called The great British Barbering Academy with The Bluebeards revenge and Salon Services. We aim to bring affordable training and education to barbers across the whole of the UK with courses that cover every aspect of barbering and are designed to elevate the participant’s skills to the next level; whether this be in hot towel treatments or clipper and scissor techniques or beard shaping.

“Our very strong training team of professional barbers has been carefully selected and will be there to support students every step of the way. educators include gareth Clark SrB, Alan Jones SrB, Luigi Caterino SrB to name just a few. Come and find out more about the academy and the courses available here: www.greatbritishbarberingacademy.com. Then you can learn more about me at www.miketayloreducation.com.”

Striving for success

“A key part of my success is the way I manage my teams. I strive to encourage and help form strong, professional relationships between the teams and managers in each of my salons. Allowing managers to step up and take on responsibility ensures that they feel developed and simultaneously gain respect from their team. In this column, I want to address a few tips that I stand by to ensure a professional, friendly atmosphere in the salons and a successful business.

Management“don’t always look to your busiest staff to take control of the day-to-day running of the salon. Target an employee who communicates well; someone who is dedicated and not first out the door at the end of the day, someone who goes the extra mile without needing instruction or praise to do so. These employees are significant to driving your business and team to success. For the first few months allow them to take FULL responsibility; give them 100% support and praise them when they perform to the standards you set. Additionally, give guidance and coaching in any areas you feel they are weaker in. Make sure you monitor their progress and, as you build up trust and confidence in them, begin to offer less support and continue to delegate more responsibilities.

Targets “This cannot be underestimated. Set staff targets to ensure each staff member is productive and ask your managers to monitor this weekly. They should also try to host monthly team meetings, annual appraisals and quarterly reviews.

“every team member should be set a monthly target; this is commonly calculated by taking two and half times their salary. For example, hours per day x by hourly rate x by 2.5. I suggest creating a spreadsheet

for each individual to fill in on a daily basis, and ensure each member of staff knows what is expected of them. By filling in these sheets daily, both you and they will know if they are meeting the set standards and expectations. equally, it will highlight those who are underachieving and those who are lowering your potential profit levels. Analysing these spreadsheets is a great way to determine if any of your staff need additional training. For example, customer service skills may not be up to standard, which results in a low referral rate. Another employee may need

training with techniques and consultations to ensure 100% customer satisfaction – even if the colour or cut is perfect – if it’s not exactly what the customer requested then it is no longer perfect!

Marketing “research! do as much as possible in every area, this includes other salons in your area, finding your target market, your unique selling point (USP) and setting the correct pricing structure. Look at your competitors, set your own standards and never let the quality slip below your own expectations. Keep things basic in terms of branding. Fancy fonts can be difficult to read. It needs to be memorable and recognisable. Select a colour scheme and stick with it, something that is timeless and won’t go out of fashion. As part of this, it’s imperative that you have an up- to date and mobile-friendly website, which is easy to understand and use. You never get a second opportunity to make a first impression so make it count! I also think including your image on your personal business card is a good move so people can easily identify and remember you if you attend networking events. Lastly, it’s incredibly important to keep track of the success of any promotions you do; to know how much new business the promotion attracted and how successful it was.”

education is the key

“My students often ask me how and why I got into teaching and the reason is plain and simple really – I couldn’t find decent staff for love nor money! I started my first barbershop with a friend at the tender age of 20. The first year was very hard (and I’ve heard that if I did this today I might not of survived) but as time went on the shop got more and more successful. After a few years of trading, and as we continued to grow, I found it hard to employ good quality staff for the barbershop. We had two Polish barbers working for us who were brilliant and, at one point, I did consider going over to Poland to find more staff like them!

“I felt frustrated and went to speak to Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) - where I initially trained – to ask them why they didn’t offer any barbering courses. Fortunately, they were in the process of developing one and so, I started observing their lessons at BCoT. I was curious to see how lessons were delivered, and after a while the lecturers asked me to teach my own barbering class to their hairdressing students. I did it and loved it. I knew I was hooked and I would be able to make a difference in the industry I love.

“By September that year, I began teaching a Barbering nVQ course and started with just four students on the course. even though the numbers were low, BCoT believed in the course, and in me, allowing the class to run. By the following January, I had 11 students on program, and by the following September, we had two full classes of learners - it had really taken off.

“My next dream was to open my own barbering academy. This started slowly, I began working with local training organisations to deliver nVQs for them. These organisations rented my training academy and paid me to teach their

BARBERING

We’re proud to see that Chris Foster SrB and the British Barbers’ Association (BBA) are raising standards in the barbering industry on a worldwide scale. This spring, Chris and his team travelled to New York as part of their efforts to educate barbers internation-ally. Salon owners and educators from across the uS gathered to learn both classic and contemporary techniques from Chris and the BBA.

Chris was keen to share his barbering skills with the American students, stating: “We have the legacy of great British hairdressing, which is respected around the world, and the creative excellence of our hairdresser has always travelled well. As the BBA, it’s important for us to travel and share our knowledge.” We’re thrilled to hear that our SrB members are spreading the high-standards bug in the uS, and can’t wait to hear where they’re headed next.

We’re delighted to hear that robert rix SrB has joined the Great British Barbering Academy (GBBA) training team!

robert has a wealth of experience and expertise to bring to the GBBA; he sits on the Barber Council, holds certifica-tions from the Hairdresser’s registration Council, has been awarded master Barber title for completing 50 years in the industry and owns a Barbershop in Southport with his son, daniel. robert says: “i consider myself fortunate to have worked with some of the greatest names in the craf t including John

Santilli, Vidal Sassoon and personal hairdresser of HrH king Edward Viii, roger poirier.” in this new role, robert will be teaching GBBA courses in both manchester and Liverpool, the first of which will focus on the timeless tradition of wet-shaving.

GBBA head educator mike Taylor said: “We’re very excited to have such an experienced barber join our team. robert is an example of what this industry has to offer and a perfect role model for those participating in our courses.”

The Barber Council was out in force at pro Hair Live in manchester at the end of February with their very own stand at the exhibition. The stand - which was kindly sponsored by Wahl - was a hive of activity and offered visitors the chance to meet chair of the Barber Council, Gary machin, and quiz him on the many benefits of state registration. Questions were encouraged and it proved to be a great way to educate people on what the Barber Council can offer and how they can get involved with the campaign. But it wasn’t all talk! demonstrations from Alison Scattergood SrB, Gary machin SrB, Lynndy rolfe SrB and Simon Shaw SrB kept the crowd engaged and the atmosphere buzzing, and served as a poignant reminder that the Council is still firmly focused on raising standards in the industry, too.

research conducted by mojo and The Bluebeards revenge reveals that 54%* of barbershop customers in the uk would prefer to book services online or via an app rather than walk in. in London, this jumped up to a staggering 66%* of clients. This proves that an online presence is more critical than ever before if barbershops want to keep pace with the ‘modern man. But there are many benefits, too. mike Taylor SrB says: “Technology

isn’t going anywhere so the sooner barbers embrace it the further ahead of the game they will be. i see more and more barbershops moving to appointments as it helps add structure to their day and allows them to prepare for more premium, dedicated services such as a hot towel shave to match the growing demand.”

*The online survey of 1,200 respondents was carried out in march 2017.

Award scoop for Alison Scattergood SRB’s students East durham College barbering lecturer Alison Scattergood SrB had several students win top places in the 2016 Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) awards. Student Lew Colls picked up first place in the men’s Creative designs in Hair category, with his peer penny Brow finishing in second place behind him. Georgia Leadbetter took third place in the men’s Commercial category and Craig Harmen picked up the silver award in the men’s Barbering Cut & Finish category competing against

more than 50 other student barbers from across the uk.

Thrilled by their successes, Alison praised her students, stating: “it’s a really proud moment for both them as students and me as a lecturer. i’m sure they will go on to have great careers in the barbering industry.” Congratulations to Alison for maintaining excellent teaching standards and her talented students, too!
