IN JESUS WE HAVE BEEN RECONCILED TO YOU...

Moderation DayAs families would be aware Wednesday last week was Moderation Day, a professional development day for staff at Gleeson College. Taking a day out of the academic year is not taken lightly at Gleeson College but the value of the staff professional development and learning for all stakeholders at the College cannot be underestimated.

The major foci of the day were the Australian Curriculum, BYOD pedagogies and supporting Year 12 students in achieving A+ standard in their chosen subjects. As you may know, at Gleeson College we are teaching the Australian Curriculum in all subjects in Years 8 to 10 this year. Some time on Wednesday was dedicated to finalising the implementation of a few subjects that are still in the process of being fully endorsed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).

Our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program has been a great success this year and we dedicated some time on Wednesday learning from each other the various ways that digital devices have been incorporated into the curriculum.

We are very fortunate at Gleeson College to have a number of staff who have experience in marking and moderating Year 12 subjects for the SACE. These staff shared their experiences with all teachers of Year 12 in order to fine tune teaching and assessment to assist our brightest students in achieving at the very highest level in the SACE.

There is a great staff learning culture at Gleeson College and it is especially rewarding when staff learn from each other.

Year 12 RetreatsOur Year 12 students attended their retreat Wednesday to Friday this week. This is arguably the highlight of the year for most Year 12 students. Many of them have journeyed together at Gleeson for four and a half years and they are now in their final leg. The Retreat experience tends to further cement those friendships and leaves lasting memories which will be recalled in times to come.

This year the class was separated by distance with one group at Victor Harbour and the other at Nunyara, Belair. We did bring them together however for a celebration of the Eucharist and a session together on the beach at Victor. By all accounts the Retreat experience this year was one of the best for both students and staff. Thank you very much to Mr Richard Sellers and the Retreat staff for the work they did in preparing and running the Retreats and thank you to the students who entered into the experience with such a wonderful spirit.

National Reconciliation WeekNational Reconciliation Week is celebrated each year from May 27 to June 3. The week is preceded by National Sorry Day on May 26. The dates commemorate two significant milestones - the anniversary of the successful 1967 referendum (where over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census).

The second commemorates the High Court Mabo decision which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land - that existed prior to colonalisation and still exists today. This decision paved the way for land rights called Native Title.

I would like to share the following prayer with our community:

Prayer for Australia

God of holy Dreaming, Great Creator Spirit, from the dawn of creation

you have given your children the good things of Mother Earth.

You spoke and the gum tree grew.In the vast desert and dense forest,

and in cities at the water’s edge,Creation sings your praise.

Your presence endures as the rockat the heart of our Land.

When Jesus hung on the treeyou heard the cries of all your peopleand became one with your wounded

ones: the convicts, the hunted, and the dispossessed.

The sunrise of your Son coloured the earth anew, and bathed it in glorious

hope. In Jesus we have been reconciled to you, to each other and to your whole

creation.

Lead us on, Great Spirit,As we gather from the four corners

of the earth; Enable us to walk together in trust from the hurt of the past

into the full day which has dawned in Jesus Christ.

Amen. (© Lenore Parker 2002)

TEACHERS ARE LEARNERS TOO!

Kogakuin Junior High School are once again visiting

Gleeson College for their English Study Program.

12 students, (Boys & Girls, aged 14-15 yrs) will be arriving from Japan on Friday 24 July,

then departing Monday 10 August 2015.

CAN YOU HELP? Students are in need of a Host Family!

If you are able to provide homestay for a student or

would like to find out more about our Homestay program at Gleeson College, please contact Ms Mary Hennessy at the College via email: [email protected]

Gleeson College Teaching staff were involved in the first Moderation Day of the year last Wednesday 20 May.

The day commenced with an informative presentation by Mrs Kirsty Jeffree on the conditions of assessment, validity, reliability and accessibility. Kirsty is currently completing the Certified Assessors course which is designed for teachers to strengthen their expertise in knowledge and practice in assessment.

We are fortunate to have a number of staff who have undertaken Stage 2 moderation at the SACE Board of SA. These staff ran small group discussions with other Stage 2 teachers on the Moderation process and what markers look for when deciding whether student work is worthy of an A+.

The remainder of the day was spent in Learning Area groups where staff reviewed current and new Australian Curriculum embedded programs. Staff shared their experiences of using technology in the classroom, including engaging educational activities and tools accessible on students’ BYOD.

STAGE 2 FOOD & HOSPITALITY: A CULINARY TREAT @ CULTURAL CAFES

Both our Stage 2 Food and Hospitality Classes have successfully hosted culturally-themed lunchtime cafés for invited family members, friends and staff in the Golden Grove Rec Centre Dining Room recently.

Working in groups of 3-5, students were required to plan, prepare and host a culturally-themed dining experience as part of their assessment. Students invited paying guests to the event, created the atmosphere of their culture through table decorations and served their guests freshly prepared cultural foods. The lunch was a two-course meal for guests, with some groups choosing to serve entree and a main meal, while others offered a main meal and dessert.

Overall the students did a fantastic job preparing the food, looking after their guests and completing the clean up afterwards! Congratulations to all our Year 12 Food and Hospitality students on a great Cultural Café group task!

YEAR 9 ENGLISH/HaSS: INTERNATIONAL PAPER PLANE DAY

Our Year 9 English and HaSS Class has been working on a learning and research process throughout the year called ‘Solution Fluency’. Students are encouraged to Define, Discover, Dream, Design, Deliver and Debrief.

During class on Tuesday, their challenge was to create a paper plane that could be flown a distance of 20 metres or stay aloft for eight seconds!

Students were required to first DEFINE the parameters of the task, including the conditions and expectations. They were then required to DISCOVER through research how other people have constructed paper planes. Students were expected to DREAM about their paper plane and wonder if perhaps they could improve on what others have achieved. DESIGN was relatively easy once this had been achieved. On International Paper Plane Day we launched our planes and DELIVERED before moving back to the class room to DEBRIEF on our successes and failures!

Congratulations to Tyler Dunlop (9 HMTOU) and Shannon Paech (9 FMCAR) on their successful flights.

FLEXIBLE LEARNING, CAREERS & VET @ GLEESON COLLEGEAt Gleeson College, we have a strong commitment to Vocational Education and Training (VET). We engage in flexible modes of learning and innovative pedagogies that assist students to achieve workplace knowledge and experiences, as well as industry standard competencies in a variety of trades and professions.

In 2015, we have 28 students enrolled in nationally accredited training courses. We have students enrolled at Certificate II and Certificate III levels in Carpentry, Construction, Plumbing Pathways, Shop-fitting and Cabinet-making, Business Administration, Hairdressing, Retail Make Up and Skin Care, Fitness, Early Childhood Learning, Fashion and Design Technology, Game Development, Animal Studies, Information and Communication Technology, Meat Processing, Electro-technology and Community Services Work.

Our VET students travel to different parts of Adelaide to access their training and attend TAFE SA campuses at Tea Tree Gully, Elizabeth, Regency Park, Adelaide and Gilles Plains. In addition, we have students who attend the Grand Junction Trade Training Centre (Gilles Plains), Kildare College (Holden Hill), PEER VEET (Alberton) and Clip Joint Education (Adelaide).

While they are completing their SACE, our VET students are also gaining competencies in nationally recognised qualifications. Many of our students will complete one or two full or partial certificates in addition to their SACE, thereby leaving school with qualifications and competencies at industry standard. With the current levels and soft projections of youth employment, any training that develops industry knowledge

and skills will benefit our students to get a foothold in the labour market.

Another benefit of completing VET during Stage 1 or Stage 2 is that our students can begin to complete qualifications that count towards apprenticeships, traineeships or that can lead to university courses. For example, Flinders University now has a range of courses that offer guaranteed entry to students who have completed a qualification at Certificate IV level or above.

The other major advantage is that our students are able to receive excellent pastoral care at Gleeson and remain with their peer group. This is particularly important for Year 12 students who can participate in all of the final year events, such as Athletics and Swimming Carnivals, Year 12 Formal, Retreat and Graduation, which will strengthen the friendships developed in the last five years and create memories that will stay with them long after they graduate from Gleeson College.

Subject selections and course nominations will begin in early Term 3, so if you are thinking about a VET pathway, now is the time to start researching the

occupation you are interested in, the training required and where it is available. TAFE SA has a great deal of information on their website and the same is true for the other training organisations mentioned above. Look for ‘VET for schools’ in your web searches to find courses that are tailored for students in Stage 1 and Stage 2.

Please email me or see me in FLC should you like some guidance.

Remember that careers are about change, so you don’t have to have your whole career mapped out at this stage. It’s valuable to have an idea of where you are heading and what the first steps should be.

STAGE 2 COMMUNITY STUDIES: ‘ARE YOU AN ADELAIDE UNITED FAN?’

Well here’s your chance to win a signed

Adelaide United ball!!I will be raffling off a major prize - an Adelaide United ball signed by ALL of the 2014-2015 season players.

The raffle will be drawn on Gleeson Day and tickets will be on sale in the coming weeks. All money collected will go towards the children’s charity Novita. Novita is a charity that works with children who have a physical or mental disability. Novita assists children from infants up to 18 year olds. This fundraising initiative also forms part of my Stage 2 Community Studies work. Novita has been supporting me and my family ever since I was born with Epilepsy and Cerebral Palsy. Without their support I would not be where I am today. Now it is my turn to give something back to them. Please buy a ticket/s and help this worthy cause.

YEAR 9/10 SPECIALIST NETBALLERS REACHING NEW GOALS!

The Netball SA Specialist Program at Gleeson College provides a number of opportunities for our girls to not only

develop their skills on court as players, but also develop their knowledge on a

range of concepts across netball.

In Week 3, the Year 9/10 Specialist Netball students participated in a ‘Nutrition for Sports Performance’

session presented by Dominique Condo, a registered sports dietician. Students learnt the importance of healthy food

and beverage choices and how this can impact on overall health and their

performance in netball, a timely session with many of our players currently

involved in Saturday Morning Sport, Knockout and Club competition, as well

as the upcoming Melbourne Netball competition.

Last Friday the girls completed the accredited ‘Foundation Coaching’ course

run by Netball SA, which was a whole day course focussing on how players

learn, error detection and correction and how to present a range of netball skills

to young players.

The girls completed a theory component presented by Roz Fraser (Netball SA) and were then required to plan and implement a skills session for their

peers. At the conclusion of the course all students achieved their accreditation

which is the first step in becoming a recognised netball coach.

We hope that by completing these courses students will not only

understand the game better but also be able to give back to their netball

communities, assist our Partner Primary schools and the College in the future.
