Watco Team attends hazmat trainingby Tracie VanBecelaereManaging Editor

When most people head to Colorado in August they go to enjoy the scenery, raft down the rivers or visit one of the many ranches; but a group from Watco had a different objective - safety. They were busy patching tank cars leaking streams of di-hydrogen monoxide which was under pressure as part of a three day Security and Emergency Response train-ing course outside of Pueblo, Colo., from August 3rd until the 6th. The course was sponsored by BNSF to provide

expert training to short line and regional railroad-ers in responding to hazmat incidents and accidents. The training was offered through the Transportation Technology Center, Inc.Watco team mem-

bers attending were: Gary Vaughn, vice president of safety; Mike Pollard, South Kansas and Okla-homa Railroad general manager; Brad Hayes, Kan-sas and Oklahoma Railroad assistant general manager; Ja-son Stutzman, West Region safety manager; Travis Herod, Central Region safety manager, Rob Thrall, West Region director of railroad operations and Bill Brown, Great Northwest Railroad general manager. The National Incident Management System (NIMS)

property. Pat Brady, BNSF instructor, was the

main instructor for the class. He covered hazmat topics such as tank car reviews, damage assessments, tank car valves, chemical protective clothing, and respira-tory protection. He then took the class out in the field with other instructors from BNSF and Specialized Response Services (SRS) to do field activities such as damage assessments, plugging and patching tank cars, field transfers with liquids from car to car, car to a flare. When in the field all students had to work safe and be aware of their surroundings because the activi-ties they took part in were hands-on and

overseen by the instructors, so a lot could have gone wrong if someone didn’t pay attention. All the classroom training and outside

activities lead up for the final task that was about a 30 car derailment scene with live explosions, fires, smoke, hazmat spills that the students had to respond to. They had to set up an incident command away from the scene, decide what level of suits to use, make initial assessments of leak-ing commodities, and perform evacua-tions. The safety teams also had to make sure field teams did not run out of air and monitored the air quality.Bill Brown, GRNW general manager

said of the class, “The class that our Watco team attended in Pueblo in my opinion, was one of the better training seminars I have ever had the pleasure of attending.”“The instructors where very knowledge-

able and took as much time as needed to go over all questions and procedures . I believe it would be a good training tool for anyone who is in contact with hazard-ous materials on a daily basis to attend. The hands on exercises that we performed such as burning off cars, patching car bodies and fixing valves is very valuable knowledge to have and although we all hope we never have to use it, it’s good to know what needs to be done should the situation arrive. Many thanks to the BNSF and their instructors for all they did.”As with most training classes there are

light moments mixed with all the learn-ing, one thing the students learned is that di-hydrogen monoxide is more common-ly known as H2O or water, so the tank cars that they were patching as practice weren’t quite as hazardous as they sounded.

The Anderson’s feed grain to “elk”

Brad Hayes, KO assistant general manager re-views his notes during the hazmat simulation.

Cars are staged outside of Pueblo, Colo., to simulate a hazmat derailment.

The “elk” that The Andersons feeds takes more than just a handful of grain, it takes several railcars full. The Grand Elk Railroad (GDLK) began serving The Anderson’s facility in White Pigeon, Mich., in March upon the start-up of the GDLK and deliv-ers outbound unit trains to Norfolk Southern.

When facility opened in 1981 it had concrete storage space for approximately 450,00 bushels of grain. Since then they have added 900,000 bushels of outdoor cov-ered storage , 1.1 millions bushels of steel storage and have added a grain drying sys-tem with additional storage in the works. In addition to serving corn and soybean needs of the farmers in southwest Michigan and north-central Indiana, The Ander-sons receive inbound cars of agricultural lime into the facility for local fertilization.

Harold Anderson started his business with the help of his family in 1947 with the goal of making it as easy as possible for regional farmers to take their product to market. That dream came true as they now handle approximately 250 million bush-els of grain annually. The company has diversified into five separate groups: grain & ethanol, rail, plant nutrients, turf & speciality group and the retail group.

“The Grand Elk Railroad couldn’t ask for a better relationship than what we have with our partner The Andersons. By communicating each shipment in and out of the White Pigeon facility along with exploring new opportunities we are certain to continue finding success,” said Shasta Stump, vice president of marketing and sales. The Anderson’s facility in White Pigeon, Michigan.

BIGGEST LOSER

CONTEST

WATCO’S

Many of the Watco Team members are hard at work trying to rid some excess weight but what happens after? Not to be discouraging but statics show that even in the best medically supervised programs, nearly two-thirds of participants are back where they started within three years.

Why is it so difficult to avoid putting those pounds back on? Biology, environment and the pressures of everyday life all play a role.

Biology - The body's metabolism, programmed for survival in times of food shortage, works against dieters. Your metabolism slows down because it's trying to conserve energy and your body doesn’t ex-pend as many calories so you have to reduce calorie intake even more.

Environment - In today’s world the cheapest foods are often the unhealthiest. Plus, activity is reduced by labor-saving devices, sit-down entertain-ment, and the growing number of desk jobs.

Life pressures - If life gets in the way, the dispos-able energy that you have for any project, including weight control, gets diverted so you go back to old habits, and you regain weight. There’s hope

Is it possible to lose weight and keep it off for a long time? Plenty of highly motivated people have succeeded. Now, research is starting to provide a clearer picture of how they do it. Those who keep it off have several things in common.

Exercise - People in the National Weight Control research registry, on average, burn up about 2,700 calories a week in physical activity. That's equal to about one hour of moderately intense activity every day - for example, five miles of walking.

Self-Monitoring - People in the weight-control registry are highly disciplined about weighing them-selves and adjusting their diets as needed. Sustainable, Healthy Diet- Although people in

the registry originally lost weight using a variety of diets, the vast majority kept the weight off by fol-lowing a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet. Another important rule is to control portion size. Breakfast - This is another important element for

people in the National Weight Control Registry. They eat breakfast, so they're spreading out their calories over the day. This pattern is important to reduce hunger and bingeing. Support - It's difficult to keep weight off, but

research indicates that it helps to have some outside support. This should be easy for the Watco Team as staying healthy is a benefit to the entire team: fewer sick days and lower insurance costs, So if you see a fellow team member making healthy

choices join in or cheer them on and we’ll all be winners.

There are so many interesting things going on with the Watco Team, we have an amazing, talented group of people who are out making great things happen across the country everyday. If you have an idea for a story that you would like to see in the Dispatch send an e-mail to [email protected]. Photographs are also a great storyteller so make sure to send any photos that you have of things going on at your locations.

Birth announcements should have the baby’s parents names, what they do and where they are located as well as the baby’s name, weight, height, date of birth and any siblings names and ages.

Many of Watco’s friends in the banking industry gathered at the Grand Elk Railroad’s Kalamazoo, Mich., location for Watco’s semi-annual lenders meeting in late July. The group was treated to a 3 1/2 hour train ride which took off from the historic Arcus depot, formerly known as the Whistle Stop Depot, in Kalamazoo. Also riding the excursion train were two members

of the Kalamazoo Regional Chamber of Commerce (KRC), Martin Dodge, senior vice president and Andy Wenzel of the Hinman Company who is the KRC transportation council chairperson.Rick Baden, Watco chief financial officer said, “Just

like our foundation principles, we value the relation-ships that we have developed over the long-term with our syndicated bank group.”The purpose of the bank meeting is to keep all

of our banks informed by giving them a detailed business overview for the previous 6 months of the year and what the outlook is for the next 6 months. Topics covered in the meeting include; the state of the industry as a whole and Watco’s business state, an operations overview for Watco’s business seg-ments (transportation, mechanical and transload), a business development overview, organic marketing opportunities, and a financial overview. The meet-ing is generally held at one of our new locations when possible. Bill Thomson, Vice President at BMO Capital Mar-

kets said “Watco continues to differentiate them-

selves in comparison to other companies. Today, most Companies will host bank meetings when they have an immediate financing need. Watco’s bi-annual bank meetings provide the bankers with the details that are behind the numbers. The meetings provide the bankers with information as to what is going on at Watco, provides an opportunity to catch up with Watco’s senior management team, and get to visit a new rail line or mechanical facility. This has provided the bankers with a better understanding as

to how Watco does business.”“It was a great opportunity to talk to the bankers

and share with them what type of customers and the commodities that we handle on the Grand Elk,” said Shasta Stump, vice president of sales and marketing. “We had a great time hosting the bankers and hope that they make it this way again.”

Carloads

Frank Riedl, general manager at the Great Bend Coop in Great Bend, Kan., was worried at the beginning of the sum-mer. There was a lot of grain to move and a short time frame in which to move it.

“We had 10 short weeks to move 3 1/2 million bushels,” said Riedl. “But the KO (Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad) did an excellent job of getting cars in and out and making space for the fall harvest.”

The ability to get cars delivered quickly helped the KO hit record harvest numbers for the month of July. The KO moved over 1,000 more grain cars this year in the month of July than what they did in 2008. The total number of bushels moved by rail was 11.68 million vs. 7.8 million in 2008. Considering each bushel is equal to 60 pounds of potatoes, that’s a lot of grain.

Trey Shafer, KO general manager, said, “This year we were able to create an operating plan that was instrumental in achieving these numbers. We placed crews in key areas to re-duce turn times significantly. Our biggest assets were the hard work of our crews and key communication. It was a team coming together that really made the difference.”

“The availability of cars this year was another key factor in reaching the efficiency level that we did. The grain traffic on the Class 1 railroads was slower which benefited us because we were storing their cars on the KO and were able to use the cars to help move grain from local elevators,” said Shafer.

The interchange partners at Wichita, Burlington Northern

and Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) and the Wichita Transit Authority (WTA) were also instrumental in reducing the turn times and getting cars in and out of the Cus-tomers facilities. Horizon Milling, Cereal Foods and Bartlett Grain all saw improvements in how quickly cars were moved. DeBruce Grain in Wichita is served directly by the KO and also saw an improvement in the amount of time it took for cars to get to and from the local elevators to the Wichita location.

Jeff Lipp, merchandiser for Farmers Coop Union in Sterling, Kan., and Ed Taylor, general manager with Golden Valley, Inc. in Rozel, Kan., both agreed that the ser-vice level this year was the best it’s ever been. Taylor said that his elevator had a close to record harvest and, if not for some hail damage to area crops, they might have exceeded it.

“We had a great harvest,” said Taylor. “Everything ran very smooth and there weren’t any problems at all.”

“Next to 2003 this has been our best year,” said Lipp. “We were having a tough time trying to get the cars loaded fast enough, that’s how quickly they were turning the cars, but that’s a good problem to have.”
