3 ¶ And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master ofhis eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the childrenof Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, andunderstanding science, and such as had ability in them tostand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teachthe learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. 5 And theking appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of thewinewhichhe drank: so nourishing them threeyears, that at the end thereof theymight stand before theking.* 6Now among these were of the children of Judah,Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: 7Unto whom theprince of the eunuchs gavenames: for he gaveuntoDanielthe name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach;and toMishael, ofMeshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.

So they came and stoodbefore the king. 3 And the king said unto them, I havedreamed a dream, andmy spirit was troubled to know thedream. 4Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack,O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, andwe will shew the interpretation.* 5 The king answeredand said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me:if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with theinterpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and yourhouses shall be made a dunghill.† 6 But if ye shew thedream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive ofme gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shewme the dream, and the interpretation thereof.‡ 7 Theyanswered again and said, Let the king tell his servants thedream, and we will shew the interpretation of it. 8 Theking answered and said, I know of certainty that ye wouldgain the time, because ye see the thing is gone fromme.§9 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, thereis but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying§§ 1.20 wisdom…: Heb. wisdom of understanding * 2.4 O king…:(Chaldee, to the end of chapter seven) † 2.5 cut…: Chaldee, made pieces‡ 2.6 rewards: or, fee § 2.8 gain: Chaldee, buy

Daniel 2:10 4 Daniel 2:19and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time bechanged: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall knowthat ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.

10¶ The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said,There is not a man upon the earth that can shew theking’s matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, orChaldean. 11And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before theking, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.12 For this cause the king was angry and very furious, andcommanded to destroy all thewisemen of Babylon. 13Andthe decree went forth that the wise men should be slain;and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.

14¶ Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom toArioch the captain of the king’s guard, which was goneforth to slay the wisemen of Babylon:**†† 15He answeredand said to Arioch the king’s captain, Why is the decree sohasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing knownto Daniel. 16 Then Daniel went in, and desired of the kingthat he would give him time, and that he would shewthe king the interpretation. 17 Then Daniel went to hishouse, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: 18 That they would desiremercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; thatDaniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest ofthe wise men of Babylon.‡‡§§

Daniel 2:20 5 Daniel 2:2920 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of Godfor ever and ever: for wisdom andmight are his: 21And hechangeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: 22 Herevealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth whatis in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him. 23 Ithank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast madeknown unto me now what we desired of thee: for thouhast nowmade known unto us the king’s matter.

24 ¶ Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom theking had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon:he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wisemen of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I willshew unto the king the interpretation. 25 Then Ariochbrought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thusunto him, I have found amanof the captives of Judah, thatwill make known unto the king the interpretation.***†††26The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name wasBelteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me thedreamwhich I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said,The secret which the king hath demanded cannot thewisemen, the astrologers, themagicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king; 28 But there is a God in heaventhat revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the kingNebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. 31 ¶ Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stoodbefore thee; and the form thereof was terrible.† 32 Thisimage’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms ofsilver, his belly and his thighs of brass,‡ 33His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. 34 Thou sawest tillthat a stone was cut out without hands, which smote theimage upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brakethem to pieces.§ 35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, andbecame like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; andthe wind carried them away, that no place was found forthem: and the stone that smote the image became a greatmountain, and filled the whole earth.

36¶This is the dream; andwewill tell the interpretationthereof before the king. 37Thou, O king, art a king of kings:for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. 38And wheresoever the childrenof men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of theheaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath madethee ruler over them all. 34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar liftedup mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding re-turned untome, and I blessed themostHigh, and I praisedand honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominionis an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is fromgeneration to generation: 35And all the inhabitants of theearth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according tohis will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitantsof the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him,What doest thou? 36At the same timemy reason returnedunto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honourand brightness returned unto me; and my counsellorsand my lords sought unto me; and I was established inmy kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.37Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour theKing of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his waysjudgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
