Calling all culture vultures …

Hannover’s State Opera House and Playhouse (Schauspielhaus) occupy leading posi-tions in international league tables. Their repertoires include both new interpretations of established classics and the world premieres of new works. The Opera House Ball is a social event par excellence, celebrated under a new thematic motto every year.

The Cupola Hall of Hannover Congress Centrum (HCC), which is Germany’s biggest concert hall, regularly serves as the venue for appearance by leading stars of classical music. A further major draw for visitors is the “TANZtheater iNTerNATiONAL” dance drama festival, at which top-ranking dance companies appear year after year. And the numerous independent theatres, which attract loyal audiences with their high standards of performance, add colour and diversity to the cultural scene. The “Theatre Night” is an annual opportunity to make an eventful tour of over 20 theatrical venues in the city.

The GOP Varieté, a variety theatre that has achieved a world-wide reputation, serves up artistry, comedy and magic, garnished with music and cabaret. MiMuSe, the biggest festival of cabaret and small-scale performance in northern Germany, takes place in Langenhagen twice a year, in the spring and the autumn. Lovers of musicals are delighted by the shows put on at the Theater am Aegi or in the baroque Garden Theatre in Herrenhausen Gardens. Highlight events of incredible diversity take place throughout the entire region, some of them in the most unexpected venues. The Garbsen Blues Matinee, for example, is a high-calibre attraction and a place of rendezvous for lovers of soul, blues and rock.

Hannover region’s “Summer of the Arts” is a series of events organised jointly by more than 30 institutions, and offers both small, intimate concerts and performances by great names of the international music scene. These take place in the charming settings provided by abbeys, churches, country houses, palaces, gardens and barns.

Lower Saxon State Theatre Hannover

Hannover State Opera 1House

The magnificent opera house, which was built by Georg Friedrich Laves in 1852 and seats 1202, is located right in the heart of Hannover.

its artistic programme has shaped the cultural image of the state capital of Lower Saxony far beyond the boundaries of the city and region. Hannover State Opera House has one of the largest permanent ensembles in the German-speaking area, with more than 30 singers and 30 dancers on permanent contracts. Lower Saxony State Orchestra and the State Opera chorus guarantee unbeatable musical quality each and every night.

every year, audiences can enjoy numerous opera and ballet premieres, as well as a broad repertoire and first-rate concerts in the Laves building in the eponymous Opernplatz. Junge Oper Hannover was established in 2010 and performs on the two studio stages of the “Ballhof” theatre in the Old Town. it is the youth section of the State Opera House and performs musical theatre for children and young adults.

The Opera Ball resonates far beyond Hannover region and every year, more than 4,000 guests flock to the ballroom on the two evenings. A dif-ferent motto is chosen each year, which shapes the décor of the opera hall and foyers. After the opening dance by the debutantes, guests can enjoy a glittering night at the ball and escape to a different world that changes from year to year. This unique event is always a complete sellout.
