The Miracle of Esther
The Talmud in Yoma 29a teaches “The sages said:… Esther: When wicked Haman decreed cruel decrees against Israel, she, in her distress, began to cry softly in prayer to the Holy One, and the Holy One answered her. Rav Assi said: As the dawn ends the night, so all miracles [recorded in Scripture] ended with Esther.” I have loved this passage for a long time. What does it mean that all miracles, at least recorded in Scripture, ended with Esther? The Purim story which is built around Esther’s heroics is iconic to the Jewish people and is the reasoning for such a joyous celebration. Esther is different than many of our female heroines in the Bible. She is able to infiltrate power and lead by being the sole voice of her community. Unlike the Sarah and Rachel’s role, Esther is celebrated for being the driving force behind more than their own family but the entire Jewish freedom.
So while recorded miracles in Scripture ended with Esther; what do miracles look like today? It is much harder to see miracles today; of course, the modern State of Israel is the greatest example of a tangible wonder. But the miracle of Esther led to many the miracles of the modern Jewish woman. After Crossriver Kosherfest I try to meet with many of our vendors to get feedback and ideas. I was privileged to meet with Alexa Arndt, who is the sales representative for Alakef and City Girl Coffee Co. They are two brands within the same company. City Girl empowers women coffee farmers throughout the world. Their coffee is organic, sustainable, and gives a portion of their proceeds back to women in the local coffee industry. Not only was I proud to host them at Kosherfest, but I am happy that we are trying to expand our connection with this wonderful brand. The story of Esther is relatable to women trying to make their mark in industry and societies that have been predominately male-driven. On April 2 we will host Rebecca Kanner for our Visions Series on the bimah. Kanner is the author of Esther which she re-envisions the life and story of our heroine. She wraps up a series of speakers discussing the Modern Jewish Woman that included JTS Rabbinical Student Elli Cohn, NCJW’s Beth Gendler and Kveller/TCJewFolk writer Nina Badzin. What a wonderful way to celebrate the miracle that was Esther by hosting these insightful female speakers. I encourage us all to think about ways to open up doors to the young Jewish professional female. How can we be sensitive to issues that were not on the doorsteps of the synagogue long ago? Our new nursing room in Freeman Family Lounge is a start and will serve as a necessary resource for our young parents. We need to continue to think about how we respond to these issues. I want to wish everyone a Chag Purim Sameach, a happy and exciting Purim. I hope you can join us for much of our amazing programming throughout Purim season; Megillah Reading, Carnival, Adult Color Wars, or just read our HaHAronian in the middle of this newsletter. See you in shul! Rabbi Jeremy Fine

Rabbi Fine was thrilled to visit Temple of Aaron members living in Florida, or
just staying there for the winter. He contacted Florida “snowbirds” to
coordinate two wonderful lunches, one in Naples and the other in Boca Raton.
Rabbi Fine enjoyed his time in the warm weather, but enjoyed the time
spent with our members more. Please contact the office if you spend your
winter in Florida and have not updated us on your winter information.

The Meaning Behind Purim and Appreciating Difference
Purim has become known as the holiday of drinking and wild festivities, a holiday in which kids dress up in costumes and grown-ups let loose. But, in all the merriment and silliness, it’s sometimes hard to remember the deeper meaning behind this holiday. Why are we celebrating this day with so much drinking and eating, with joy and laughter?
Megillat Esther tells the story of King Ahasuerus who, led astray by his evil advisor Haman, unwittingly agrees to the destruction and extinction of all of the Jews. Haman tells the King that “there is a certain people, scattered and dispersed among the other peoples in all the provinces of your realm, whose laws are different from those of any other people.” He goes on to say that “it is not in the King’s interest to tolerate them.” Haman’s solution? Extermination. Or, in the words of Megillat Esther, “to destroy, to massacre, and exterminate all Jews” regardless of age and sex. Presented with difference, faced with a people who looked, talked, and acted differently than himself, Haman can see no other solution than the complete elimination of the source of this difference.
Thankfully for the Jewish people and for pluralism everywhere, Mordechai learns of Haman’s plans and encourages Esther to go before the King and beg for the fate of the Jewish people. Initially, Esther is fearful, hesitant to speak out of turn lest she bear the wrath of the King, but ultimately she finds the courage to challenge the decree. Once it is revealed that Haman plans to annihilate the Jewish people, Haman’s fate is sealed and the King reverses his decree, instead threatening the lives of anyone who attacks the Jewish people.
The Jewish people is saved along with their language, their customs, and all of their points of difference. This year, I take from this story a call to work towards a world in which the differences between people are not only tolerated but celebrated. A world in which we are curious about each other and learn to ask questions. A world in which there is no place for Haman and no place for his baseless hatred.
In order to commemorate this reversal, this “transformation from grief and mourning to one of festive joy,” each year we celebrate the 14th of the month of Adar as a day of great feasting and merrymaking. This year, we have an incredible program lined up for Purim at the Temple of Aaron on Wednesday, March 23 at 7pm, an Adult Color Wars Spectacular in which they’ll be games, drinks, and desserts (Bogart’s Doughnuts and Nothing Bundt Cakes!) for adults of all ages. We’ll celebrate the saving of the Jewish people with hula hooping-madness, a whipped cream pie-eating bonanza, name-that-song knockout and more! Please help us make this an awesome night; you can sign up and RSVP to Rabbi Avi as a team of five or more or sign up as an individual and we’ll place you on a team.
This year, as we eat, drink, and be merry, let’s not only enjoy ourselves but remember why we’re doing it.

Purim Points History teaches us to remember (Zachor) the bad guy (Haman). It bothers some modern day thinkers but others say if you do not remember negative parts of our history, then you are part of the danger of repetition.
Rabbis and other leaders have established rules for Purim over the centuries. The reader sings three blessings before the megillah is read: commandment to read megillah, gratitude for miracles done for us, and thanksgiving that we have been kept alive. Historically Rabbis told people to drink to the point they cannot tell the difference between Mordecai and Haman. Some say Purim is a challenge to the inflexible approach to religion.
Rabbis also created two added
commandments:
· Gift sending or Shalach Manot. On Purim day, two portions of gifts ( typically food) are sent to at least
one friend.
· Gifts to the needy or Matanot La’evyonim. It is a separate special mitzvah to give money or food to at
least two poor people.
Purim Color Wars for Adults—March 23rd at 7pm

Chag Purim Sameach! Happy Purim! Here comes an amazing month of celebration for everyone in the family. We are excited about the array of programming for all ages starting with our Pre-Purim Celebration (10:30 am) and annual Purim Carnival (11:00 am-1:00 pm) on March 13. The Pre-Purim celebration will include Purim Trivia, Costume Parade, Music, and more. Parents are invited to join us for this short assembly before our annual Carnival begins at 11:00 am. The Annual Carnival will include games, prizes, auction and raffle, face painting, Hamentashen making, and more. We are looking forward to this fun day to kick off our 10-day Purim celebration here at Temple of Aaron.
Also, mark your calendars for a great night of celebration on Erev Purim beginning at 4:30 pm with Mad Science: The Mystery of Chemistry. See a series of experiments that change, smoke, and spurt! Watch liquid change into a rainbow of
colors. See Styrofoam “melt” before your eyes! Finally, a volunteer will help make a vat of Mad Science Slime!
At 5:15 pm everyone is invited to a FREE dinner with fun the kids including spin art and making superballs with Mad Science.
Following dinner we will read the Megillah in the sanctuary with costume parade, songs and booing Haman’s name over and over! This should be a night of celebration with lots of fun for everyone!

February was filled with TUSY play rehearsals, World Wide Wrap, Drive-in movie night, Wii Games, Treat Yoself Lounge, and so much more! We had relaxing and fun lounge nights as well as intense and silly play rehearsals. Our USY vs. TAXY basketball game was a huge success! We had fans from all over Sunday school to cheer on both teams. Our TAXY Shabbat included over 20 TAXY members leading services, reading Torah, taking Aliyot, and more. We’re so excited for all that March has to offer! We can’t wait to continue learning, giving back, and having the best time ever together!
Sam Berenson Moves to East Coast “Minnesnowta” has been my home for the past six years. From college at the University of Minnesota to my first job at the Sabes JCC to Temple of Aaron, it has been six years of friends becoming family. What originally seemed like huge (Twin) cities has become a much smaller place for exploration and community.
Although this has been my “home away from home,” I am now ready for the next part of my journey while moving closer to my immediate family on the East Coast. I have learned a tremendous amount from many people in our community and will continue acquiring expertise as I conclude my work as Engagement Director at Temple of Aaron. Thank you for welcoming me into the community and helping me grow. I’ve loved all of my adventures at Temple of Aaron and am excited about my future.

through the country in the 1960s, services have
not been reinvented quite like this.
Now each pew will be equipped with a canvas,
brushes and a variety of paint colors. Each
congregant will be asked to paint what they see or
feel. Congregant Bob Kaufman stated, “This is
exactly the kind of crea!vity we need at ToA. Just
please do not look at my pain!ngs.” President
Rosalyn Segal added “We encourage our rabbis to
think outside the box, but not outside the canvas.”
The program is planned to launch July 1st 2016,
just in !me for President Segal to leave office.

Men’s Club Mistake Pancakes for Latkes
In what can only be described as complete turmoil, the Men’s Club showed up to the Latke Bash to flip Pancakes? That is right. In a story originally seen in the online version of AJW, the ToA Men’s Club mixed up their flipping assignments. People were furious! Said long time flipper Terry Zien “I just don’t know what to say. We are sorry. It was our mistake.” Like Blair Walsh, Zien took the fall. “I’ll take the blame for this one. I thought Latkes but produced Pancakes. But we will recover from this and come back even stronger.”
Sisterhood to Feature Four-Cornered Hamantaschen
In shocking news Temple of Aaron’s Sisterhood has decided to release a four-cornered Hamantaschen. The news comes after a surprising mishap in the kitchen. Said Sisterhood President Roxanne Portnoy, “The baking was going good and all of the sudden a 4th corner appeared. We knew we were onto something.” Rabbi Strausberg added, “I can only compare it to the
candles burning for 8 days. This is going to be a big seller. I couldn’t be more excited.” Sisterhood plans on releasing the 4th corner to the public soon.

Writes Arianna Gavzy: “It’s a great compilation of feel-good pics/updates and also very informative on the realities of military engagements going on in Israel.” Also followed on Facebook: AIPAC, Birthright, The Israel Project and others including Israel Lacrosse! Eric Lipman recommends Commentary Magazine’s “all digital access” for the best analysis of events in Israel. He also follows over 50 reporters, analysts and NGO’s on Twit ter and recommends the Jerusalem Post’s Lahav Harkov (@LahavHarkov) and the Times of I s r a e l ’ s D a v i d H o r o v i t z (@davidhorovitz) as providing the most useful detail on the news of Israel.
The Israel Committee aims “To Make Israel Internal.” If interested, please contact Susan Tervola, who can direct you to Co-Chairs Jen Roberts, Jay Baldinger or Yoav Segal. In keeping with this month’s update theme, we are always interested in your contributions of new Israel content.

2016 Election
Judges Needed
Temple of Aaron will again be a polling place this year on
August 9 and November 8. Hundreds of our neighbors will be coming here to vote – you can help them have a good
day by working as an election judge. Ramsey County is expecting a
record number of voters this year, and they have a great need for new
election judges.
Call Ramsey County Elections Office, 651-266-2214, to help.
Enroll your 4th, 5th, and 6th graders in ToA religious school and get 50% off approved
4-week summer camp. Judaism 365 helps everyone; it is not tied to merit or need. For details, contact Rabbi Fine at 651-698-8874 or [email protected]

Planning for Cemetery Is Difficult & Easy
It is very difficult to make the decision to schedule an appointment to select a grave at our we l l -ma inta ined Roseville Cemetery. It is wise to do so in advance where you have time to make
a decision, time to make payments, and time to organize a location near family members. It is easy to meet with Executive Director Ken Agranoff who will show map with available locations, identify graves for people at cemetery, and answer all questions about fees, flowers, benches, and perpetual care. Planning in advance is wise and comforting for many. Act now and call Ken at 651-698-8874 ext. 106 to schedule your selection meeting.
