Building the zoo!

Part 1 – Building animal enclosures

Zoo keeper Ted needs your team to build different

animal enclosures for his animals. Look at the Zoo

Map to see where each enclosure will go.

This is a big task! Zoo keeper Ted needs you and your partner to work as a team!

Student 1 will design the enclosures for the lions and elephants, and Student 2 will

design the enclosures for the giraffes and monkeys.

Look at the table below to see the space and angles different animals need.

Your team’s mission: Design your enclosures so that zoo keeper Ted’s animals

will be comfortable!

1. Have your Evaluation Page open on the computer so you can constantly

check that you are on the right track.

2. Use the grid paper on the following pages to design a draft of each enclosure.

Student 1 must draw their draft enclosures using a red pencil

Student 2 must draw their draft enclosures using a blue pencil

Confirm the area of the enclosure and the number of angles in the

enclosure in the space provided

Once the draft enclosures have been drawn, swap designs so that you

can check your partners work

Use the Checklist Sheet to make sure your partner’s enclosures meet

all the requirements

If your think your partner has not met all of the requirements, use your

coloured pencil to adjust their enclosure plan so that it is correct

(describe the changes you have made in the space provided)

When you have handed the drafts back to one another, check your

plans to see if any changes were made. If there were, have a look and

see why they were made and if you think it was the right choice

Once you have evaluated that your plans meet all the requirements,

draw your final enclosures on the Final Animal Enclosures Map

using your coloured pencil

You can use either your original draft or a draft that has been edited by

your partner – Use whichever draft YOU think meets all the needs of

the particular animal best

Don’t forget to write your units down the bottom (What does 1 square

equal? Look at your drafts to see how the units were communicated)
