Joint Session Committee Reports

Report of The Committee on Patriotism and Civic Activates

To: The Grand York Rite Bodies of South Carolina: Companions and Sir Knights, your committee on Patriotism and Civic Activities in South Carolina is pleased to make the following report: Companions and Sir Knights, again we did not have any York Rite Bodies that reported to the Committee that they held a Patriotic Night or a Civic program during the past year. Again, this year we had a few Sir Knights that said they wore their Knight Templar uniforms and helped with the “Massing of the Colors” in the Sottish Rite Valley which they belong to. These Sir Knights that are also Scottish Rite Brothers are to be commended on the dual work you do in each of our Masonic Bodies. Companions and Sir Knights, we encourage you this coming year to put together a program in your local York Rite Bodies, to show our support to our Military and local Civil Servants. Please keep the committee informed if you have a meeting, so we can show our appreciation in our report. Let’s HONOR these men and women daily with a thank you and in our prayers.

GOD BLESS AMERICA AND SOUTH CAROLINA Fraternally submitted: Michael E Copeland, PGHP, Chairman; O Walt Sealy, PMIGM, James J “Jack” Holmes, PGC Perpetual life Committee minutes

March 12, 2017 Glenn Greene opened the meeting and passed out minutes from the last meeting. Minutes for last year were approved.

Return for the fund was 8.8%, from the CRE fund that Bill Logan had spearheaded years ago.

Checking account for last year was at Bank of America but Chairman Greene moved to Anderson Brothers bank, where he works.

A few members asked to be replaced. Phillip Russel rotates off, as does Johnnie Morris. Gary Sowell was elected to the Board as Commandery representative, Dean Tollison as Council representative to replace Russell.

Carl asked us to sell this membership harder, especially the bodies with only five or so members. Bill Martin spoke about the reasons he cannot support them now, since the per capita is not being covered. He has had to ask perpetual members to make donations to cover per capita. James Lyle said that at Clemson, the financial strain is because of old life memberships from $75 or $200. Carl Truesdale recommended that when men die we make honorary contributions for those men.

Each of the three bodies needs to pay in per capita on each member, with the caveat of 40 year members in Chapter and Council. Discussions of how to get rid of the per capita exemptions for 40 year members, possibly with a grandfathering of some. This will be sensitive, especially for local secretaries. Positive and negatives were discussed.

Glenn asked us to focus on this long term, not just in a committee meeting. Some discussion was on the essential elements of the Christian and scriptural components of the York Rite and masonry. Meeting was closed at 2:30. A Glenn Greene III

Address of the Right Eminent Grand Commander

William F. Martin, II, KCT

To the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar of The United States of America, The Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of South Carolina distinguished out of state guest, and to all Sir Knights present, I welcome you to the 111th Annual Concave of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of South Carolina being held here in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Please do not hesitate to call me or any member of the local committee if we can do anything to make your stay here more enjoyable.

I extend a special welcome to Most Excellent Companion James W. Lyle, the Most Excellent Grand High Priest of the Most Excellent Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of South Carolina, Most Illustrious Companion James W. Barr the Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of South Carolina, Sir Knight Henry A. Adam, Right Eminent Southeastern Department Commander, Sir Knight Bobby B. Simmons, Right Eminent Grand Treasurer, of the Grand Encampment, Official Representatives of Sir Knight Duane L. Vaught Most Eminent Grand Master of Grand Encampment.

I would take this opportunity to thank all the Past Grand Commanders for their help, advice, and shared wisdom as I have tried to accomplish my duties as your Grand Commander this year. Most of all I thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for being with my Companions and myself as we traveled this year and for giving us protection, and safety; also, for bringing us to this point today as we open our Grand Conclave.

STATE OF THE ORDER

Sir Knights, I am saddened to report we lost 1 Commandery to merger this year. I approved the merger of Easley Commandery #21 in Pickens with S Maner Martin Commandery #17 in Clemson. However, I am pleased to announce that Peace and Harmony prevails within this Grand Jurisdiction and this Grand Commandery. The three Grand Bodies have worked closely with each other this year and unity is strong between all three bodies. We are trying to attract Brethren from all walks of life and put their individual talents to work for the good of our great fraternity. There are a few Commanderies that are not quite functioning as prescribed by the Grand Encampment. I want to encourage each constituent Commandery to open and close in the manner that the Grand Encampment ritual prescribes.

MEMBERSHIP

Although the NPD’s and deaths are more numerous than the new members coming in I am encouraged with the new commitment I see in our local bodies. I encourage each Commandery to take the time to contact those who are going NPD. If a member is going NPD, then there must be a reason he is doing this. I feel that we must have failed them in some way for them to go NPD.

GRAND REPRESENTATIVES

I Approved recommendations for Grand Representatives from the Grand Commanderies of Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Connecticut.

Page 13: The York Rite of Freemasonry Of South Carolina Annual ... · 01/01/2017  · The York Rite of Freemasonry Of South Carolina Annual Proceedings . Two Hundred Seventh Annual Convocation

13

DISPENSATIONS

I approved twelve dispensations to receive, refer and ballot on petitions this year,

BY LAWS CHANGE

I encourage each Commandery to review their by-laws on an annual basis and submit changes. The following Commandery requested by-law changes and I was pleased to approve them:

Anderson #11 Rock Hill #15 Newberry #6 Greenwood #5 Winyah #24

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE

I would like to express my thanks for all the donations made to the Holy Land Pilgrimage program. I feel that the Holy Land Pilgrimage is one of the best programs we have for showing Masonry in a positive light to non-masons. I also commend Sir Knight Dean Strickland Eminent Grand Prelate and his committee for the work they do in support of this program.

CHRISTMAS DAY OBSERVANCE

I had the pleasure of visiting several Commanderies for their Christmas Observances. Thank you for the invitations. I encourage all Commanderies to hold these observances annually and open them to the public. This is another positive way to let non-masons see the true picture of our fraternity. We as Christian Masons should take advantage of this opportunity to put Christ before the public and let them know who it is we serve.

KNIGHTS TEMPLAR EYE FOUNDATION

I am promoting 100% participation in this program. The Knights Templar Eye Foundation has changed somewhat over the past several years with our contributions going totally toward research. This is a worthy Philanthropy. I thank each Commandery for your support and look forward to seeing all bodies at 100% participation soon. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Sir Knight Richard W. Sealy, PREGC and his committee for the work they do in support of this wonderful philanthropy.

EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE

My wife and I had the pleasure of traveling to Washington D.C. to attend the Easter Sunrise Services at the George Washington Masonic Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia. As I marched up Shooters Hill on a sunny Easter morning, it made a terrific impression on me. It was really a great experience for me to be a part of this service. I would encourage each Sir Knight to make the trip to Washington D.C. and participate in the Easter Sunrise Service. It is an experience you will never forget. Also, like to thank Sir Knights Jamie Barron, Eminent Commander of Hampton Commandery #23 for attending and joining in the march up Shooters Hill with me.

SOUTHEASTERN YORK RITE CONFERENCE

The Southeastern York Rite Conference was held in Melbourne, Fl this past year. This was the fifth of these that I have attended. Also attending were VEDGC, EGG, EGGC. These meeting provide an opportunity to many leaders of York Rite in the Southeast and in the Grand Encampment. This meeting is very educational, informative and provides an opportunity to exchange ideas on way to improve York Rite Masonry. I would encourage all Sir Knights to attend this meeting and to learn ways to improve yourself to lead your local bodies and your State.

AWARDS PRESENTED

KNIGHTS TEMPLAR CROSS OF HONOR

The Grand Encampment of Knights Templar of the United States of America awards this singular Honor to one Sir Knight each year. Every Commandery is responsible to nominate one Sir Knight for this honor each year. This year I received no nominations for this great honor.

RECOMMENDATIONS

I make the following recommendations:

1. That the Grand Recorder and the elected line of all three Grand York Rite Bodies continue to hold quarterly meeting and look at ways to improve the way business is conducted. The meetings this year were very informative and resulted in several changes being made.

Page 15: The York Rite of Freemasonry Of South Carolina Annual ... · 01/01/2017  · The York Rite of Freemasonry Of South Carolina Annual Proceedings . Two Hundred Seventh Annual Convocation

15

2. That the Elected line of all three bodies continue to work on consolidating the Official Visits. A consolidated Official Visit for District 3 was held in Clemson and District 4 was held in York this year and it was very successful and they plan to schedule again this year.

4. That we continue to contact those Sir Knights that are in danger of suspension for NPD. We need to find out why they are not paying their dues and what we can do to help or keep their interest in York Rite alive.

5. That each Eminent Commander try to conduct an education program for the commandery.

6. That each Eminent Commander try have their elected and appointed officers in the uniform.

7. That each Eminent Commander open their Commandery in full form.

CONCLUSION

I would like to thank you for giving me the honor and privilege to serve as your Right Eminent Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of South Carolina for 2017 – 2018. It has truly been an experience I will never forget, and it is one of the highlights of my Masonic career. I want to thank all the Sir Knights for the friendship and brotherly love that they showed me during my visits.

To Most Excellent Companion James W. Lyle and Most Illustrious Companion James W. Barr, I have enjoyed our travels this year and look forward to our continued friendship through the coming years.

To Sir Knight Gary “Buck” Jolley, I want to thank you for all your hard work and help this year. The three meetings you have held with the elected line of the three Grand elected officers is helping to bring unity and a common vision for the Three Grand Bodies for the years to come.

To all the elected and appointed officers of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of South Carolina who served with me this year, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the support and guidance you have provided me during the year. Also, to the new Right Eminent Grand Commander and his officers may God Bless you and keep you safe on your journey this year.

To South Carolina Commandery #1, I am grateful to you for your support throughout my year as Grand Commander and for your support of the Grand Commandery Charities.

To my Lady Karen, thank you for your love, encouragement, and help this year and throughout my Masonic Career.

God Bless the United State of America.

God Bless This Grand Commandery

Respectfully Submitted

Report of Committee on Christian Relations

To: The Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of South Carolina: As a Knight Templar, we vow to defend the Christian religion. With our swords by our sides, we stand ready as soldiers of Christ. We visualize being on the battlefield, shoulder to shoulder with our brothers. Ready to give all we have to fight, even to death. RIGHT? The enemies of Christ come at us in many shapes and forms. The enemy is not always a visual foe that you can see and wield your sword against. He is often stealth and in disguise. We must be prepared to meet him on all fronts. The best way to be prepared for battle, to sharpen your sword, strengthen your faith and to keep yourself fit is to be an active member of your local church. Training and practice are vital components in becoming a mighty warrior for Christ. I want to thank all Sir Knights for their work within our Asylums; especially our Christmas Observances. I was blessed to be able to attend many across the state. The turnouts were wonderful. It was great to not only see fellow Sir Knights, but their wives, family and friends come to celebrate the birth of our Savior. I encourage each Commandery to put forth an effort to improve their observances and to make Christ the center of your programs Respectfully Submitted, Rev. Report of Committee on Necrology To: The Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of South Carolina: This past year 135 of our fellow Knights has answered that call home and left our ranks. As we recall the memories of each of them we are saddened, realizing they are no longer with us and serving alongside us in our great fraternity. Their swords are in their scabbards never to be drawn again. But let us pause and remember those encouraging words that our Blessed Savior spoke to his followers before he departed this earth to return to his heavenly home, “Let not your hearts be troubled…and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” We can rejoice that this is not the end of the story; this is not the final Chapter. We have that Great Hope, that Blessed Assurance of a heavenly home. Hallelujah!! What a wonderful thought!! To know that our brothers have answered that call, their labors are over and are now resting with our savior. And that we to, shall see them again!!

It would be remising if I didn’t make a special mention of Most Excellent Carl R Truesdale and Most Illustrious Larry Dempsey These great companions served our Grand York Rite honorably for many years. You will surely be missed but your memory will remain with us forever!

I close with this prayer by Rev. Bob Blackwell (Past Grand Prelate) once prayed:

“Almighty God, with whom the Spirits of faithful soldiers of the cross are in joy and felicity, we give you our humble and grateful thanks for their service among us. We put them in your

everlasting care and pray that they may continue to go from strength to strength in the world of light, life and love where you forever reign. Amen.”

Report of Committee on Holy Land Pilgrimage

To: The Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of South Carolina: One of the most exciting things we do as Knight Templars is send a worthy clergyman on a mission to the Holy Land; to allow him, without financial worries, to travel and study where our Savior walked and taught. Our prayer is that he will be inspired and bring back home an improved perspective to inspire his congregation. Sir Knights, we can rejoice in this mission, understanding, just as our original “Poor Fellow Soldiers” did, the importance of Christians to be able to make this pilgrimage.

We received no applicants this year for the pilgrimage. However, we continue to collect donations for this fund from individuals and local York Rite Bodies. Please remember that we need all applications in before the first day of September. There are also certain qualifications the minister must meet to be considered. These are found out on the Grand York Rite Webpage.

We thank each one who contributed this past year. We ask that you continue to keep our mission in mind and lend your support and funds for this most important project as Knight Templars.

Report of Committee on Knights Templar Eye Foundation To: The Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of South Carolina Your Committee on the Knights Templar Eye Foundation submits the following report: Based on the latest information from the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, South Carolina has donated a total of $7,146.00 which ranks us 25th in the nation. With 2,816 active members this amount equals $.254 average per member which places us 47thth in the nation. Sir Knights, this report is considerably less than last year. Please make every effort to return to our previous point. The cost to become a life sponsor remains at $30.00 per member. Our goal is to have 100% life sponsors. Most constituent commanderies add the $30 to the fees for a candidate to become a York Rite Mason. My suggestion would be if your commandery is not at 100% and you usually donate, you could include the names of Sir Knights who are not currently listed as sponsors. Thank you for your continued support of this worthwhile philanthropy. Respectfully submitted, Richard W. Sealy, PGC, Chairman, Ted Burgess, PGC, Dick Wesner, PGC

State of the Craft Companions, I am saddened to report we lost 2 Chapters to merger this year. I approved the merger of Excelsior Chapter #23 in Cheraw with Keystone #19 in Lancaster effective April 18, 2017; Pickens Chapter #47 in Pickens with Living Arch #21 in Clemson effective December 31, 2017. However, as I have traveled through the state I am pleased to announce that York Rite Masonry is still alive and growing in some Chapters. Although there are still obstacles yet to overcome, I feel very optimistic about what I see.

General Grand Chapter Award Each year the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of South Carolina presents the General Grand Chapter Award issued by General Grand Chapter International to one companion who has been recognized for this outstanding service to his chapter in South Carolina. Recommendations are received by the committee, this year the committee consisted of myself, R.E. Tony Bizakis, R.E. Acy Flora, and R.E. Ricky Freeman. Grand Chapter Education Program

With the future leadership of this program, I am optimistic education will get better and better over the years.

Royal Arch Research Assistance The Royal Arch Research Assistance is a nonprofit 501 (C) (3) tax exempt foundation incorporated in the state of Kentucky in 1974. The R.A.R.A board of directors are committed to identifying and supporting the scientists who are searching for the treatment regiments and eventually a cure for C.A.P.D. Central Auditory Processing Disorder is a hearing deficiency that does not allow those effected to distinguish sound that can be heard by those with regular hearing. This year the passing of the pot of fraternal giving “the P pot” during our official visits and the generous donations of the chapters in South Carolina, we were able to make a substantial donation to this worthy cause. I would like to thank M.E. Bob Bean Sr. for his hard work with the R.A.R.A. foundation.

Necrology Companions, I am saddened to report that 116 companions have laid down their working tools and joined our savior, Jesus Christ, in that House not made with hands eternal in the Heavens. Many of us this year, have lost members of our families, and Masonic brothers and sisters that were dear to us. My condolences and prayers are with each of you and your families, and I ask that each of you pray for each other.

Dispensations I approved twelve dispensations to receive, refer and ballot on petitions this year.

Decisions of the Grand High Priest

I am pleased to announce that peace and harmony reigned throughout this Grand Chapter this year and all decisions were of routine matters.

2. I recommend that each chapter of South Carolina, try to have at least one fundraiser per year to support their charities.

3. I recommend that each chapter open in full form as often as possible. 4. I recommend that we try to find a financial solution to lessen the burden that the 40-year

exempt program has created. 5. I recommend that local chapters address their dues structure to cover future per capita

increases. 6. I recommend that the companions of the Grand Chapter develop innovative methods to enhance

education. 7. I recommend that we continue to encourage unity between all appendant Masonic bodies,

especially with Grand Lodge. 8. I recommend that we continue to support the Youth Organizations, DeMolay and Rainbow Girls. 9. I recommend we continue to support the York Rite Magazine.

Jurisprudence Committee report on the above Motion Your Committee on Jurisprudence offers the following: Although Masonic Law requires investigations of candidates and a layover of petitions, Capitular law does not. There have been many instances where good Royal Arch Masons have been exalted when they have not been balloted on at a stated Convocation nor has their petition been held over for one lunar month. Therefore, it is the committee’s recommendation that based on precedence set by previous Grand High Priests,

The Motion Dated 3/14/2016 Most Excellent Grand High Priest and Distinguished East

For years I have been hearing talk about getting out of the General Grand Chapter. Today I will be the bad guy and put a end of the talk. I make a motion that we remove our self from the General Grand Chapter, and that this motion lay-over to next year so everyone has time to discuss and make up their mind.

After comments from those wishing to speak a secret ballot was spread and the motion did not receive a majority and was not approved.

Report of Committee on Necrology To: The Most Excellent Grand Royal Arch Chapter of South Carolina: During the past 12 months, God in His divine plan has chosen to call from this transitory life to the Celestial life above 128 of our companions. We mourn the passing of our brothers and companions, and our sympathies are extended to their families and friends as we consider our loss. We pray that they look to our heavenly Father for strength, guidance, and comfort in times of need. We give thanks to God for the work they have accomplished, the influenced they have exerted, and the contributions they made to the world as they served God and man. For those of us who remain, let us carefully improve the various scenes of life through which we pass. Let us humbly ask for guidance to improve the time remaining to us, so that when our labors on earth are ended that we shall have cause to thank God, that grace which has enabled us to do His blessed will. Let us earnestly seek that spiritual life, which cannot be destroyed by death. Let us remember that the man, who is spiritually alive, may look at death with boldness, and bid defiance to its utmost rage. He has nothing to fear for God is with him. Angels wait to conduct him to regions of immortality. And even this perishing body will rise again, to die no more. So, Companions with a strong faith, let us stand together to remember our brothers and call upon the Name that is above every name. Love one another. Fraternally submitted, Haywood Fowler, Excellent Grand Chaplain, Chairman, Robert A Nix, Right Illustrious Grand Chaplain, Dean Strickland, Eminent Grand Prelate

Address of the Most Illustrious Grand Master of South Carolina

M.I. James Whitney Barr To the Most Illustrious Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of South Carolina, Welcome to the One Hundred Fifty-Eighth Grand Assembly of the Most Illustrious Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of South Carolina. To each of you I extend a hearty welcome. To our distinguished out of state guests, thank you for joining us here in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We hope you are enjoying your visit, and we thank you for attending this Grand Assembly. To our distinguished in-state guests it is an honor to have you here, and I also hope you are enjoying your stay with us at this Grand Assembly. To the General Grand Council Officers and Grand Representatives, I am personally grateful for your continued support. I welcome you on behalf of this Assembly and assure you that we continue to strive to once again unite. To the Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in South Carolina, Most Worshipful Master Michael D. Smith, you honor us with your presence, and we and thank you for your continued support of York Rite Masonry. Companions, I continue to be humbled by you electing me last year as the Most Illustrious Grand Master, and it is a pleasure to have served alongside Most Excellent Grand High Priest James Lyle and Right Eminent Grand Commander William Martin the second. Their companionship has been rewarding, educational, and supportive. This past year was exciting and fulfilling to me as I served as your Most Illustrious Grand Master. It is now my duty to deliver you an account of my actions for the past year.

STATE OF THE CRAFT Companions, I am saddened to report we lost 2 Councils to merger this year. I approved the merger of Excelsior Council #9 in Cheraw with Witherspoon Council #33 in Lancaster effective April 18, 2017; Pickens Council #34 in Pickens with Living Arch #32 in Clemson effective December 31, 2017. However, the mergers were received positively by the involved bodies, and they anticipate greater strength in this unity. Throughout the rest of the state, I found peace and harmony prevailing in our York Rite Bodies. To all Councils, thank you for the hospitality extended to my officers and to me, and thank you for all the honorary memberships that my counterparts and I received. They mean more to me than words can express. Following our predecessors’ recommendations, we continued to hold quarterly planning meetings. These meetings were generally attended by all elected officers from all three bodies providing four years of forward-looking vision. This provided not only a forum to discuss and plan immediate needs, but to brainstorm and envision the long-term future of the South Carolina Grand York Rite. I encourage our successors to continue these vital meetings. One fruit that came from these meetings, along with the assistance of Past Most Worshipful Master Gerald Carver, was writing a Mission Statement for the Grand York Rite. This Mission Statement, which is posted on the Grand York Rite website, reads as follows:

“The Mission of the South Carolina Grand York Rite is to support The Grand Lodge AFM of South Carolina, to adapt and develop leadership and education; Inspire charity, fellowship and quality of

the craft.”

Page 60: The York Rite of Freemasonry Of South Carolina Annual ... · 01/01/2017  · The York Rite of Freemasonry Of South Carolina Annual Proceedings . Two Hundred Seventh Annual Convocation

60

One goal in writing this Mission Statement was to encourage unity within the York Rite, and unity with other Masonic organizations, particularly the Grand Lodge. Since the Grand Lodge is our only source of new members, it is essential that we work together with common goals. Over the several years as an elected officer, and through many discussions about our organization with my traveling companions, I continually found myself asking questions about why we do the various things we do. From esoteric points in rituals to administrative matters, I was always asking “Why?” So, this ultimately became my theme, “Why are we doing what we are doing?” My intent was to encourage our leaders and members to step back and look at what we are doing in the York Rite, and ask why. The South Carolina York Rite has a deep history with its tradition and ritual, and we must preserve those foundational elements of our organization. But Companions, over the past several years, I observed many administrative and logistical issues that caused me to simply ask “Why?” My focus this year has been on the business meetings and on education. Too often, many members fail to come to business meetings or remain inactive because they see them as stagnant and boring. I encouraged all members, new and seasoned alike, to try to bring something to each meeting. Even a simple question asked can spark discussion that can breathe life into a meeting.

BROKEN TRIANGLE We are saddened by the passing of 112 Companions. We are especially saddened by the passing of Most Illustrious Companion Larry Dempsey, Past Most Illustrious Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters South Carolina, and Carl Truesdale, Past Most Excellent Grand High Priest, who served this Grand Council as the Grand Representative to Ohio.

DISPENSATIONS I approved twelve dispensations to receive, refer and ballot on petitions this year.

BY-LAWS The following Council By-Law Changes were approved: Wynne #4 Absolom Cody #8 Oriental #17 Maxwell #21 Winyah #24

GRAND REPRESENTATIVES Approved recommendations for Grand Reps from Tennessee, Alabama, and Louisiana

EDUCATION Regrettably, planning and conducting educational programs this year fell short of the goal of holding district-wide education in lieu of a statewide educational meeting. So, at our official visits, I encouraged local bodies to think about ways to introduce education into business meetings, even if in small ways. I hope this will help lay the groundwork for our successors who have a more formal approach to York Rite education. One district stood out this year: District 1, which organized and held the York Rite District 1 Council Instructional meeting. This meeting was a four-hour roundtable discussion of various points in the Council degrees. This forum provided many insights, everyone contributed, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. I can honestly say that every minute of those four hours were well worth the long trip across the state. I recommended that the organizers refine their agenda, and expand to other districts, or state-wide. I also recommended that they distill the discussion points down to several bullet points that could be used in local York Rite body meetings.

SUPER EXCELLENT MASTER’S DEGREE The Super Excellent Master’s Degree was once again conferred at Aiken Lodge No. 156 to a packed hall. The degree was performed in an excellent manner, and as always, the meal was exceptional.

IN-STATE VISITS Companions, I had the opportunity to travel across this fine state, and I enjoyed great personal diversity and corporate unity at the various bodies. In keeping with our focus on unity, two districts coordinated their official visits as unified events, and the results were very successful. Attendance was high, and we received very positive feedback. Unified visits are intended to promote inter-body communication, fellowship, and education specifically to help local bodies to connect with one another. However, while it is our collective goal to promote unified events, we certainly understand that geographical variances across the state make it impractical for every District to hold unified meetings. I am pleased to have been able to visit the following Councils within the state:

March 13-15 South Carolina Grand York Rite April 17 District 4 - Gaffney, Richburg, Spartanburg, Union, York April 27,28 South Carolina Grand Lodge May 9 Orangeburg May 16 Charleston June 12 Florence June 19 OES 110th Grand Session June 19 District 3 - Anderson, Clemson. Greenville, Laurens,

I am honored to have received Honorary Memberships and Chapter Pennies from the various York Rite Bodies across the State. I will cherish the memories of those visits, and the fellowship offered by the various Bodies.

OUT-OF-STATE VISITS It was an honor to represent South Carolina at several regional Grand York Rite Assemblies at which outstanding courtesy and hospitality were extended. South Carolina should be very proud of its sustained unity among the three York Rite Bodies throughout the state.

March 19-21 North Carolina Grand York Rite May 21-24 Florida Grand York Rite February 23-25 Alabama Grand York Rite

Regrettably, I was unable to attend the Georgia Grand York Rite due to a family illness.

SOUTHEASTERN YORK RITE CONFERENCE Regrettably work commitments prevented me from attending this conference, however South Carolina was otherwise well represented.

AWARDS PRESENTED Ish Sodi This year, I present the Ish Sodi awards to: Grand Elected Officer: Jerry Willard Grand Appointed Officer: Judson Seay Hidden Work: Robert Elsner

RECOMMENDATIONS Companions, I have listened to your comments, suggestions, and concerns about our future as I traveled across this Grand Jurisdiction. Taking those into consideration I make the following recommendations:

1. I recommend that our Grand Council continues to support the CMMRF. 2. I recommend that our Grand Council commits itself to affiliate again with the General Grand

Council to help to promote the York Rite beyond our state and country borders. 3. I recommend that the four Elected Officers of the Grand Council continue to organize

quarterly planning meetings with the four Elected Officers of each of the other Grand Bodies. 4. I recommend that we review the administration of Grand Representatives to encourage and

improve inter-jurisdictional communication. 5. I recommend that each subordinate Council open and close in full form at least once each

quarter. 6. I recommend that our Grand Council considers requiring new 40-year members to pay per

capita to the Grand Council. Sixty-one percent of our membership pays per capita for both themselves and the 39% who are exempt. Within two years this is expected to shrink to 50%, further increasing the financial burden of dues-paying members.

CONCLUSIONS

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters as your Most Illustrious Grand Master. I hope that I have served you well. To my traveling companions, especially James Lyle and Robert Elsner, thank you for deepening our friendship and solving the world’s problems. To the Anderson York Rite, thank you for your support and encouragement. I am blessed to have many past Grand Heads as mentors in Anderson. Joe Parnell, Marcus Burdette, Mike Copeland, and Ted Burgess, you provided invaluable guidance, support, advice...and correction as needed. You truly made this year much easier than I anticipated. To my wife, Stephanie, thank you for your love, your encouragement, and your patience throughout my journey this past year. And finally, to God in whom I put my trust, thank you for your strength, endurance, and unwavering guidance. Thank you to each of you, and may God bless you. Report of Committee on Broken Triangle To: The Most Illustrious Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of South Carolina: Let us take a moment to pause during these proceedings of our great fraternity and remember our 147 companions who have answered that heavenly call by their Great Creator. They have laid down the tools of their profession. We rejoice with all their families and keep them in our prayers as they pass on to their eternal award. Let us especially remember Companion William R Logan Jr and J Frank Gilliland, Past Illustrious Grand Masters of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of South Carolina. Let each of us remember them and continue praying for their families as well as each other as we press on with our labors. That we may also enter the joys of our heavenly father and hear those affirming words, “Well done thy good and faithful servants.” I leave you with these wonderful words from Reverend Suggs: “For we know full well that, while autumn brings the storm and fallen leaves and winter strikes the killing frost, as certainly in spring the branch buds, leaf out and brings forth fruit, only to make their memories sweeter to us.” Fraternally submitted, Rev. Dr. A Robert Nix, Grand Chaplain

Amos 7 (KJV)

by Rob Elsner, VEDGC 1 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings. 2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord God, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. 3 The Lord repented for this: It shall not be, saith the Lord. 4 Thus hath the Lord God shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord God called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part. 5 Then said I, O Lord God, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small. 6 The Lord repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord God. 7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. 8 And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: 9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

The beginning of this section reminds us that Israel has been devastated in many ways. Israel had been a sinful nation and broken God’s Covenant. Step by step, however, God tries to bring His people back through lessons of mercy, in spite of how evil the people have been.

The image of locusts taking all that is left of the grass so that there will be no more good growth for livestock, meaning that people will also starve. When fire burns up all of the roots and remaining grass, famine will be spreading soon. God used these natural forces as His instruments of justice, just as He used the King of Assyria to punish the nation of Israel. The entirety of Israel had been diminished, and there were real questions if God would continue to allow the people to live in heresy and evil.

In verse seven we get to the main point. God threatens Israel with a plumb line. While the plumb line is not a weapon to be feared, it is an indicator of how upright something is. Walls and houses were built with plumb lines, but they were also torn down after being measured with a plumb line. If the house was not true and plumb, it should be torn down and a new one built in its place. Similarly, if people are not true and upright, they will not see a lot of mercy. Great examples of the plumb line being used as a judgement exist, such as in 2 Kings 21:13, Isaiah 28:17, Isaiah 34:11, and Lamentations 2:8. Each of these is worth reading and seeing how God uses the plumb line to show when people are not upright, and what happens to them.

Luckily for Israel, Amos was a great prophet and prayed for the people of Israel that god might be merciful and not judge them too harshly. God is always merciful and loving, so only teaches Israel another lesson. This should remind readers of Revelation 9. There, locusts are used to punish and warn, and remind people that it could have been much worse if God was not so very merciful. God could have wiped out Israel in Amos 7, or all of humanity in Revelation 9, but instead was stopped, was merciful and kind, and simply gave a lesson that allowed a lot of people to learn and be saved by His unending grace. Those who sin against God are not worthy of mercy, but God so

loved the world that He gives many opportunities. Remember that God does not delight in suffering, and does not want the death of a sinner, but that the sinner might be saved.

The question for us today is how we learn from this lesson. In Masonry we are taught to use the builder’s tools in an allegorical sense. We consider the uprightness of our lives and try to live more just and noble lives, avoiding selfishness and greed, and trying to measure up to the expectations of our faith and our families and communities.

As Masons, we are to consider our actions and measure ourselves by the Volume of Sacred Law upon our altars. The Bible is that book for most masons, and in its pages, we see the errors of our ways of greed and lust, of gluttony and arrogance. Scriptures remind us that we are Fallen and completely dependent upon God’s grace. In scripture and older prayers, the word miserable is used often. Many people hate hearing that word and get mad when people in the church tell them that they are miserable. This word did not mean wretchedly unhappy or uncomfortable, not did it mean something pitiably small or inadequate. Rather, from the Latin root miseriae, meaning in need of mercy, we get another picture. We are all miserable, as we are all in need of God’s mercy. As masons, we recognize that we need the mercy of God, and that we are empowered to do something about our rectitude. We can walk uprightly, doing good and promoting peace and freedom. Every time we right wrongs and fight oppression, we are doing good work, not for its own merit, but as an expression of our faith and love, caused by our faith and love.

In and out of Lodge, we should also help each other in brotherly love by being plumb lines for each other, gently and lovingly measuring each other and helping make corrections as we build our lives to be just and upright before God. Our obligations are only the starting points, not the end of the journey. We grow and develop and build our lives in honor of God. If we do this well, we will act the way that we are commanded to:

8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.

And what does the Lord require of you?

To act justly and to love mercy

and to walk humbly with your God.

-Micah 6:8 (NIV)

Psalm 23 (KJV) by Rob Elsner, VEDGC

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Psalm 23 is not about death, but about life. This Psalm was not written for the funerals at which it is so often read. In fact, the Psalm only began to be used for funerals after the printing of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer, but many different denominations of Christianity began to use it for funerals after that. The only line that refers at all to death is an allusion to the Valley of the shadow of death, but God is protecting from death there. Because it has become so tightly entwined with funerals, it would be impossible to change its use, but we can expand by considering more. It is essential to look at this psalm in terms of what it was originally supposed to function as. This psalm is about life.

The opening line tells us that this is about life by referring to the Lord as my shepherd. This says shepherd, not undertaker or butcher or cook. A shepherd takes care of the living and keeps them alive. Lying down in green pastures is a wonderful, benevolent activity for sheep, as they get to eat lush grass and are safe. Still waters can be drunk from without fear of being pulled into raging torrents and swept away. If you are safe and fed and with your flock and family, life is blessed and good. Your tables are overflowing with food and your life has been anointed with the oil of joy.

There are times of life that are struggles. Evil will threaten us in this Fallen world, and evil can be like a valley that holds many dangers like wolves and bears that we cannot see in the darkness of shadow. However, God is always with us. He is a good shepherd, taking active interest in every one of His sheep. His rod gently goads and pushes us in the right direction away from danger, and His staff is ready to defend us from whatever wild animal tries to attack us. Knowing that we are protected by such a good shepherd is a great comfort to all of us. We are not alone. We are cared for and loved. There in the middle of verse four, a transition takes place. The psalmist has been talking in the first person about himself, then he switches to talking directly to God using the term “thou.” You, God, are with me protecting me.

After this switch in speech, the psalmist describes how much as a person God is doing for him. No matter what is happening in life, God is providing for us, even if we do not see. If we have faith in God, we can stop and partake of God’s bounty and trust Him to take care of our enemies, at least until we are refreshed. God wants us to live good lives but is not going to force us to live as He commands. If He did that, it would mean that we had no free will, and if we have no free will, our love for Him is meaningless, as we would have no choice. We are not really sheep, but loving beings made in His image. So, he gives us a choice and opens up options for us to trust in Him and love Him, and as our faith grows, we can start to understand more and more of life.

Look at 1 Corinthians 10:12-14 (NIV): 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he

will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. 14 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.”

Too often this is misquoted as “God will never give you more than you can handle.” Of course, this is not what is being said. God will not break your faith, only you do that. However, He will sometimes let you break your own heart. At times we are not focused on loving Him and one another. When we do not focus on love, we become idolaters focused on other gods, whether money or power or sex or anything else. When we recognize this, our hearts break in a good way: Psalm 51:17 tells us that: “My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.” This is saying that when we are humbled from rebelling against God, we can have a well-broken heart that is strengthened to believe in Him more and stop being idolatrous. This is where verse 3 of Psalm 23 is so poignant, as He restores my soul from being broken by sin.

If we live lives of faith and love, goodness and mercy will indeed follow you the rest of your life, and your life will be eternal. The Scriptures are clear about what this means. First, in Mark 12:30, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:5: “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” Second, Leviticus 19:18 tells us “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people but love your neighbor as yourself.” This is also quoted directly by Jesus in Mark 12:31. If we do these things, there can be no alternatives, but God’s goodness and mercy will be with your faith the rest of our lives.

Ecclesiastes 12 (KJV)

by Rob Elsner, VEDGC 1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; 2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain: 3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened, 4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low; 5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: 6 Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. 7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. 8 Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity. 9 And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. 10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. 11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. 12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. 13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Among scripture, this is one of the most appropriate topics for youth today. It is common to hear young people say, “I am spiritual, but not religious” or “I will worry about religion when I have children.” The Preacher who wrote Ecclesiastes is directly combatting these two ideas with wisdom directly from God.

The various verses depict the ravages of old age, from failing eyesight and hearing to loss of teeth, from brittle bones to frail muscles. Life itself becomes difficult for people who have no pleasure and passion left. To see that life is about pleasure and not about focusing on the God who gave us life is vanity. To think that we can enjoy life and not give thanks to God who gave us life is vanity. To think that we made ourselves and are more than dust without the spirit that God has given to us, and therefore owing all to God, it also vanity. Only in full relationship with God as our creator, sustainer, and redeemer can we live in fullness and joy. To say that you are spiritual is to acknowledge that there is a God and seeing the reality of God in our lives is overwhelming. Some might have such a view because they see evil in the church. There is evil anywhere that human beings are; we cannot put such offenses at God’s feet. If we are to have free will, then the love we offer God has to be voluntary, and we only have free will if we have an option to not love God. Some will take that option. Some will not see the free offer of grace and love that comes from God. They will say that they do not need it while they are young and healthy. They see religion as only eternal fire insurance that might save them from hell.

As people get older and start to see their mortality, especially when they have children, this is when people start to see religion again as important. They want to have their children brought up in the church to teach them good lessons and have the same socialization that they did. While this is a wonderful outcome, it is the wrong reason. God is not simply there for questions of life and death, He is there for all questions of life, as He designed life. Verses 13 and 14 remind us that the chief purpose of humanity is to love God and worship Him. This is what we were made for, and not just for when we are older and facing our mortality, but for every day of our lives. Those who heed God and love Him with all their hearts and minds and strength are those who will see the beauty and love of resurrection and life eternal. Doing as we please and not believing until we put on a show later in life does not fool anyone, especially not the Architect of the Universe.
