Where does the time go?! Dorothy and I just nished up our shift in the beer booth at the Seafood Festival. Tomorrow morning we leave for our 50th Anniver-sary trip. Our rst stop is Denver and then on to New York! Rest assured this trip has been discussed with Vice Commodore Rich Irwin and Rear Commodore Carol Buyvid and all things at PYC will be handled. Quick review of our involvement with the Seafood Festival. I’m the total optimist with our invitations to our club. On my shift on Saturday afternoon I handed out twenty invitations. My sincere thanks to Lynn Fogleman for getting our club involved with the City of Pittsburg and the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce. The last event we enjoyed before leaving town was the Italian Night dinner Ralph Tocci and Rich Irwin and crew put on as part of our membership week-end during Seafood Festival. It was delicious! When we left it looked as if everyone was enjoying the music of the live band. Please excuse the brevity of this report but I left town on 9-12-10. If you see something at the club that needs done, do it, or tell an ocer so we can get it done.

Well, Seafood Weekend has come and gone. Hopefully you were with us on Saturday evening – what a great time was had by Everyone. Good – no – it was excellent – food, music, dancing, horse races, camaraderie. We had it all.

I would like to Thank John and Kathy McNichols for running the Horse Races and Ben Blair and George Iaco-nis for calling out during the races.

Of course, I would like to Thank the Galley Crew and those who Decorated. Ron Kelley, Sharon Rintala, Rosie Romero, Susan Stincheld, Michelle Houston, John Correra, Carol Buyvid and of course my Beautiful Wife, Jackie.

This type of endeavor takes a lot of planning and hard work but is certainly worth it!! Thank you all once again.

As you can see the Clubhouse and Grounds are doing quite well. This as they say, takes a village. There are some notables who seem to always pitch in. I do hope that I have also done that in the past.

Many thanks to those who step up to set up and breakdown tables, chairs, etc., before and after events. After our General Membership Meeting in September, there were too many people to count helping out. The event the next day, by the way, was a huge success.

Thanks seem to always go to the Three Amigo Golfers – Rich Irwin, Carlos Jaramillo and Steve Simmons. They are always quite gracious in their endeavors to help – especially behind the scenes, not seeking out accolades but doing the jobs that need to be done. I think there are a couple of Guardian Angels who also do the behind the scenes tasks: Dorothy O’Connor, Wanda Dillon, Sharon Rintala and not to forget Ralph Tocci. He is a godsend.

As mentioned in the General Meeting, we have new Flags, Burgees, etc., now ying outside our portal. I would like to have a Work Party, but we seem to be “full up” for the remain-der of the year. This is of course, due to our hardworking Port Captain (Carol (Phil) Promessi) and the Rental Committee (Dorothy & Wanda). BUT please be on notice, we do need one and shortly. We will have little notice but hopefully it will be as successful as the last one.

We now have our slate of possible Ocers – so do not miss your chance to vote which will be Friday October 8th.

Remember if you see something which needs attention, please contact one of your Board Members and we will see that it is taken care of.

The Seafood Festival has come and gone and we had a great membership weekend here at the club hosting Marina West and Oxbow Yacht Clubs. There were volunteers from PYC that worked the beer booth at Seafood Festival including our Commodore, Dan who told me he passed out about 25 invita-tions to people to come and look at our club. As I write this I’m not sure if anyone has come by but will report about that in the future. A special thank you goes to my breakfast crew of Jeanne Pedersen, Dave Henderson, Floyd Harley, Ben Blair and of course my woman, Susan Burkitt. I appreciated all of your help! We cooked breakfast of scrambled eggs, country potatoes, sausage and toasted bagels with an assortment of juices and co¤ee for twenty eight including the crew. This was the morning after the great Italian dinner Ralph and Jackie Tocci and Rich Irwin and Rosie put on the night before. We weren’t able to attend but heard it was delicious and a sellout!

This just in – we have a new member, Susan Barber, who I have not met but will contact to get more information to share with you. If you see Susan around the club, please be sure to give her a good ‘ol PYC welcome.

RBOCJOAN MARSH-CLUNE

DELEGATE & PAST PRESIDENTWWW.RBOC.ORG

On Tuesday, September 20th I attended a Community Forum in Antioch sponsored by the Delta Protection Commission. The meeting was the fth public forum in the greater Delta area on the subject of an Economic Sustainability Plan(ESP). (This is actually much more interesting than the title suggests.) The ESP will address multiple issues relating to the Delta’s economy, safety and ood protection, recreation and tourism, agriculture and business, and infrastructure. Their plan is due to be completed by the end of December. The plan will be used for future planning by the Delta Protection Com-mission and will inuence policies of the Delta Steward-ship Council regarding the economic sustainability of the Delta. This is all about water. Several of the RBOC board members attended one or more of the other forums on the subject. Following are excerpts from the notes that I sent on to them reporting on the Antioch meeting.

The 6:00 p.m. meeting in Antioch was not well attended. Present, in addition to the consultants and former State Senator Mike Machado, Commission Director, were a representative from Federal Glovers' oce, from League of Women Voters, from City of Antioch, and from the City of Stockton (an Antioch resident). Also Bill Worrell, long time Antioch resident and boater, a cattle rancher from the Oakley area, a man from Bethel Island and a couple of late comers whose aliation/interest I couldn't deter-mine. Matt Kowta, ESP project manager, on the issue of economic sustainability, closely controlled the discus-sion. He shifted any discussion about the proposed barriers at Three Mile Slough and the Two-Gate Project to what the real or imagined nancial impact might be. I did have the opportunity to talk about public safety, access and the impact on water sports, fuel consumption and cost as being negatively impacted. Several people touched on quality of life i n the Delta, growing family

and business needs, and quality of recreational and boat-ing opportunity briey. Also, the growing need for all kinds of water-related recreation and the goods and services to support it. The need for fresh water for the City of Antioch and for area agriculture and ranching was a frequent theme. The cattle rancher is one whose land is sub-irrigated. Her cattle will die, as will her family business if the salt-water incursion continues or increases. I gave the consultants a copy of the front-page article in the Sunday, 9/18, Contra Costa Times entitled "Delta: A Lake in the Making" (lake as opposed to estuary.) I gave a copy to RBOC Vice President North, Linda Bendsen, for dissemination to the board members who may not have seen it. The value of their 1997 statistics on boating and shing expenditures in the Delta was challenged and the need for census information to be updated from 2000 was obvious. The next steps in the process were not as obvious. It was not clear how a draft report could be created by Decem-ber using the information that they presented to us. Seann Rooney, the other ESP consultant present, seemed to capture the sense of participants' comments as best I could see them on the ip chart pad that he recorded them on but he put many of them in his own words rather than those of the speaker. There was no summation from Seann's notes so no one could feel certain that his/her comments had been heard and recorded accurately. I hope that they will publish the comments from all of the meetings as they indicated that they would. I am on their email list and will stay involved. If any other Pittsburg YC members would like to attend future meet-ings, please let me know. As always, for up to date infor-mation on these and other legislative and regulatory mat-ters that challenge our boating rights, go to the RBOC website, www.rboc.org

When buying a boat, the most important thing to remember is speed. Unless the boat goes really fast, you might not get back in time to make the payments

October Member of the Month: Bonnie and Ed Stetson

How many square feet of boat does it take to live in harmony with one’s spouse? At least 1000 square feet of boat, according to Bonnie Stetson—and even then it occasionally is not enough! Well, this month’s members of the month, Bonnie and Ed Stetson, live aboard a lovely 58 foot Bluewater. You can nd the Stetsons and their boat at Oxbow Marina in Isleton, at the new Marina West Yacht Club at Tower Park Marina or at the Pittsburg Yacht Club Marina most of the time. Ed says that he has been around boats all his life. In his early years, the water and boats represented recre-ation on Folsom Lake and the American River. He said his idea of fun in those days was tying a plywood disc to the back of the boat and putting a kitchen chair on the disc and going for a ride. It was no surprise in a way that Ed did a tour in the Navy. When Ed was living in Missouri because work took him there, his wife passed on, leaving him with two teen-age daughters and a son and some wonderful neigh-bors. One of those neighbors was a recently divorced woman named Bonnie. Eventually, Ed and Bonnie merged their families. Once Ed was moved back to northern California, to Stockton to assume a plant man-ager position, it wasn’t long before the two of them decided to get into boating once more. They bought a Bayliner rst, then a Sea Ray Sundancer. As they approached retirement in 2001, they decided to give up land altogether and move onto their new 58 foot Blue-water, with the huge upper level entirely enclosed (Ed claims that’s his room). Bonnie says the most dicult part of moving from a house to a boat is to get rid of “stu.” She said you can’t accumulate on a boat. Ed’s philosophy is—if you buy something new, something old has to go.

When asked how he spent his working days prior to retirement, Ed says that he worked for over 35 years for Sigan Containers, the largest manufacturer in the United States of cans for food products. Bonnie said for a long time he’d go grocery shopping with her and then she’d locate him in the canned food section. He’d nd defective cans and take them back to the plant to quality control! Ed served as the plant manager in Stockton for a manufacturing plant of Sigan Containers for 22 years. Cans were big business then, with more than 450 million cans manufactured in a year at the Stockton plant alone.

Bonnie’s background was in commissioned sales in the radio and newspaper advertising business where she spent 22 years. She said that during the 1980’s that industry was fun when there were Mom n’ Pop opera-tions. But once the large corporations began to buy up media outlets, it was an entirely dierent culture where relationship building was not emphasized. That took the fun out of the business, Bonnie says. Bonnie and Ed have had some interesting experi-ences on their boats. Ed talked about a cruise to Mon-terey with one other boat one year. They hit really bad weather, but decided to try to make it home from Mon-terey. They had not anticipated the power of the waves—and found that the refrigerator door opened and, well you can imagine what a mess that was! They also found that water had seeped into the chain locker in the high waters because it had no cover—so water was also in the forward berth. Twelve hours later they pulled into the SF Bay and headed to Emeryville. The Pittsburg Yacht club was there on their down bay cruise. Some came aboard to look at the mess, but Bonnie said appetizers and drinks were calling louder than cleanup crew for their boat! Foam mattresses when soaked with salt water need replacement. They are better prepared for weather these days. Experience is a great teacher! When Ed brought their Bluewater home from Port-land, he says that he was on sleep tour as the rent-a-captain, Ed’s friend and brother manned the boat. They had decided to move at night since the waters seemed calm after a port stop. About midnight, Ed awoke

(Continued from page 10)startled as the sound of the engines slowed down to idle. He quickly got up, looked out the porthole, and saw a long line of lights. Not comprehending what that could be, Ed joined the crew and it became clear that they were on a collision course with a large, lit up, 150 foot boat. Ed’s crew altered their course to starboard. The other boat altered to port. Again, Ed’s boat turned to starboard—but the other board again maneuvered to a collision course. Beginning to get frantic, Ed and crew saw a series of £ashing lights from the huge boat and then it took o, resuming it’s original course. Ed’s assessment is that the captain was bored and decided to play cat a mouse game in the middle of the night along the California coast with the “little” Bluewater. Ed and Bonnie are an integral part of the rebuild-ing of the Marina West Yacht Club at Tower Park. The membership is growing and it has enabled them to secure a building which they have slowly out¦tted with a stocked bar, tables and chairs, a great view of the marina, colorful £ags and other interesting wall hangings, and lots of camaraderie and great BBQ’s. They have no bathroom or kitchen—but it hasn’t slowed progress for those who are bringing the Club back to life. Ed’s participation in that Club includes all the chairs and two years as Commodore a few years ago. So, in addition to a 10 year old grandson and a 13 year old granddaughter, Bonnie and Ed Stetson cruise the Delta and bring a cheerful presence to the clubs they frequent. They enjoy the First Sunday musical event at the PYC, and enjoy the people. You’ll ¦nd the two at the PYC frequently, so walk up and introduce yourself to this month’s members of the month.

This is the fth year that the Eddie Hart All In One Foun-dation hosted it’s annual Olympian Track and Field Edu-cation Clinic. This year over a hundred youth attended the event and twenty-ve parents received the benet of presentations provided by individuals representing colleges and the banking industry. The parents were impressed and said, “That the information they received was very helpful in preparing them in dealing with the rigors of getting their youngsters into college and how to pay their tuitions.” The youth spent their time receiving technique and training information about their various events from the Olympians, who facilitated the Clinic. Following a day of hands on train-ing, the Olympians shifted from the track at Los Meda-nos Jr. College, to the Pittsburg Yacht Club to settle into a great meal provided by the New Mecca Café. The Olympians had a great time at the club visiting with club members and taking in the wonderful delta view. Many of them said they are looking forward to return-ing next year and they hope they can visit the yacht club again. The Eddie Hart All In One Foundation, and the Olympians thank the Pittsburg yacht Club for the their warm and friendly hospitality.

The Coast Guard cutter tuned in to a faint distress signal from a sinking pleasure craft. "What is your position? Repeat, what is your position?" shouted the radio operator into the microphone. Finally a faint reply crackled over the static: "I'm executive vice president of First Global Bank - please hurry!"

THE DELTABy

P/C Phil Promessi(Excerpts taken from ”Looking Back” by Earl Holmeyer)

(Continued from last month)

Over the years there have been some discussions as to where the Delta truly starts. According to the NOOA Charts, the Delta begins where the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers meet at the North end of Broad Slough. The Eastern point is called “Point Sacramento” and the Western Point is called “Point San Joaquin.” On the West-ern side of the slough is Winter Island and on the Eastern side is Sherman Island. This area is located directly north of the City of Pittsburg. Other Cities have claimed to be the “Gateway to the Delta”, but the City of Pittsburg is the true beginning of where the Delta begins.

Many towns settled along the rivers between Pittsburg and Sacramento. Towns like Antioch, Rio Vista, Isleton, Walnut Grove, Locke, Freeport, and Ryde etc. Some of these have gained reputations and were included in some of Mark Twain’s books as he traveled up and down the Delta. Another famous author, Jack London, enjoyed the Delta and used to drop in to several saloons, including one in Pittsburg.

The town of Locke became famous because of the popu-lation of Chinese people that settled there when they were building the levees and working the farms. They could stave o loneliness by being among others speak-ing their native language. The chief entertainments were the gambling games, the wide open activities that were carried on before and after prohibition and the oerings of the Oriental Star Theater. The merchants who sold food and supplies and contracted for the labor gangs, head-quartered at Locke. The Chinese founders of the town built Locke around one main street of stores with their living quarters upstairs. Each building had a second story porch or balcony, which extended over the sidewalk. These upstairs porches provided families with a place to sit outside and protected the street level sitters and walk-ers from the heat of the summer and the wet of the winter. These sidewalks, roofed by the upstairs porches from one end to the other, became Northern California’s earliest shopping mall, long before the term was coined.

One establishment is still popular with yachtsmen today. Al’s Place has built a reputation as a bar and steak restaurant that reaches far and wide, always under the name lovingly called “Al the Wops.” It is a Delta institution.

There are more misconceptions about the establish-ment of Locke than there are facts in print. It is not very old. Walnut Grove came rst, and had its own Chinatown. The town burned down and was rebuilt several times. After one such re in 1914, some of the Chinese moved out and built the new town on prop-erty, which Clay Locke had been cultivating as a pear orchard. Locke is the only town in America actually built by Chinese. It is remarkable that they even built Locke because; in those days they could not own property. Today the buildings are still on the Locke Estate. Despite the lack of landings, the old Southern Pacic Railroad warehouse, one of the few of its kind still standing, is still used as “The Boathouse”. It houses trailer borne pleasure boats and gently drops them down 30 feet into the Sacramento River with a special sling and hoist arrangement.

There are many stories about the Delta and the Delta Yacht Clubs. Too numerous to tell in this short synop-sis, but no story about the Delta would be complete without the telling of the beginning of a club that is not a formal Yacht Club, but is one of the most color-ful groups of pleasure boaters ever to hoist a burgee. It is really the story of a man and a rowboat that came to rest on a tulle island in Little Potato Slough over 75 years ago. In the depression days of the 1930’s, Joe Attello, an old salt, decided he would seek content-ment and a less harried existence for his retirement by nding on the Delta, a garden spot and his own harbor. (To be continued next month)

Since their boss was an avid yachtsman, everyone in the office chipped in to buy him a sextant for a birth-day present. Henderson volunteered to make the pur-chase, and when he learned the marine supply store was out of stock, he phoned the local sporting goods store. When he burst out laughing and hung up, a co-worker asked what was so funny. "They transferred my call," Henderson explained, "and when I asked the woman who answered if they had a sextant, she said they had all kind of tents and what I did in them was my business."
