In 1903, composer W.C. Handy first heard the blues, ignit-ing an expansion of its influence that now reaches world-wide, both on its own and through its reverberations in themany genres of which it is a foundation, including jazz, rhythm and blues, rock 'n' roll, soul and hip-hop. In cele-bration of the hundredth anniversary of this encounter, and in recognition of the ongoing impact of the blues uponmusic and cultural history, both in America and aroundthe world, the United States Congress has proclaimed theyear beginning January 1, 2003 to be the "Year of theBlues." To mark this important occasion, ExperienceMusic Project (EMP), the Blues Foundation, Blues Inc. andVulcan Productions, along with other partners involved inThe Blues project, have designed a year-long series ofinterrelated events, multimedia projects, and educationinitiatives – to raise awareness of the blues and itsuniquely American heritage:
• Congressional Proclamation of YOTB.
• Launch of YOTB web site, a first-stop portal for allinformation on YOTB events, partners and sponsors.
• "Sweet Home Chicago" Blues Traveling MuseumExhibit, Produced by Experience Music Project.
• Develop partnerships with concert venues, festivalsand publications to promote the YOTB and specificblues activities and artists.
"The blues is at once American andworldly. It's a form of storytelling thatis so universal that it has inspiredpeople beyond our borders and contin-ues to influence music here andabroad. We're hopeful that the seriesand YEAR OF THE BLUES will introducenew audiences worldwide to this musicand also inspire kids, whether they likerock or hip-hop, to better understandthe struggles and genius that gave birthto what they listen to today."--Martin Scorsese, Executive Producer, The Blues V

The blues is a powerfully influentialmusic–an expression of the African-American experience that stirs uni-
versal emotions. The nation's mostprominent artists have credited the
blues with influencing their music. Inthis musical journey, we are able not
only to trace the actual journey ofthe music from Africa, across
America, and to Europe, but also tofollow the effects of the blues on allpopular music. It can be argued that
no other type of music has had amore lasting influence on today's
artists than the blues.
As Willie Dixon so aptly said, "Theblues are the roots; everything else
is the fruits."
The Blues will celebrate andincrease appreciation of blues
music; capture the essence and cul-tural impact of this genre throughstories of artists and their music;and inspire audiences to explore
their own personal ties to the blues.
