THE WORLD’S LARGEST SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

AMAZING FILM, FOOD & LIVE ENTERTAINMENT

CGU Insurance is proud to welcome you to Tropfest 2018.

As Foundation Partner, we’re delighted to support Tropfest as they once again hold this festival that champions creativity and storytelling.

CGU shares Tropfest’s vision for an inclusive and culturally diverse Australia. In fact we’ve been passionate supporters of multicultural communities and small businesses for over 165 years.

We're thrilled that this year the focus is on telling stories that reflect the rich cultural tapestry of Australia, particularly amidst the backdrop of one of Australia’s most multicultural cities, the City of Parramatta.

We hope you enjoy the films from these entrepreneurial filmmakers, who are pursuing their passions, achieving their ambitions and working tirelessly, often against the odds, to pursue their dreams.

HEY TROPPERS!It’s truly wonderful to welcome you back to beautiful heritage-listed Parramatta Park in 2018 to celebrate Tropfest 26.

As many of you know, Tropfest started out in 1993 as a small screening of my own short film at a local Darlinghurst cafe, the Tropicana. Today, we are the largest festival of our kind in the world.

As well as wowing audiences around Australia and the world over the past decades, Tropfest has become an immensely powerful launch pad for emerging filmmakers, helping to propel the careers of literally dozens of Australia’s - and the world’s - most exciting talent. To date, we’ve held Tropfest in places as far and wide as New York, Abu Dhabi, Penang and New Zealand.

The festival’s core mission has remained the same since day one: to offer an accessible platform for undiscovered and unique filmmaking voices, and to provide a national and international audience for those people to tell their stories and showcase their talent. Over 26 years, we’ve continued to achieve this mission across our live events, TV broadcasts, online presence and more.

But that mission is only possible with the support of you and the tens of thousands like you who show up for us each year, so we thank you sincerely for that. We are also entirely reliant on the commitment of our filmmakers, and the passion and generosity of our partners.

I would like to express my enormous gratitude to CGU Insurance for continuing to stand behind Tropfest, our filmmakers, and our audience. Our foundation partner (aptly named!) stepped unabashedly into the fray when Tropfest famously fell on hard times back in 2015 through no fault of our own. CGU had heard the news along with the rest of Australia that Tropfest was in trouble, and they swiftly raised their hands and offered to literally ‘see us through’. I can honestly say had we not received CGU’s helping hand that day, Tropfest would now be banished to the history books of the Australian film industry. So thank you, CGU, thank you.

As if the partnership wasn’t already perfect enough, this year CGU and Tropfest unite around a shared passion: celebrating and encouraging cultural diversity in Australia. Like us, CGU believes we only strengthen as a nation when we embrace the many wonderful and diverse people - including those born elsewhere - that make up this unique country. For that reason, this year you’ll enjoy many wonderfully diverse stories within our Finalists, along with a gender balance in our filmmakers that helps lead the way to a new and improved reality in the Australian and international film and television industry - also a top priority for us.

I’d like to thank our other incredible sponsors and supporters as well, beginning with our new partner ABC TV - bringing Tropfest live to homes around Australia this year - and YouTube, who are webcasting us live globally. We’re deeply appreciative of new partnerships with Melrose Park by Payce and Holden Automotive, and we welcome back the Parramatta Park Trust, the City of Parramatta, Western Sydney University and Screen Australia. Each of these unique and wonderful partners has become an integral part of our event in their own way. Put simply, they are the ONLY reason we can usher Tropfest 26’s talented filmmakers onto the national and international stage.

We also thank our many other supporting partners for joining us on our journey, including our Friends Of Tropfest — which you will find acknowledged on our website and elsewhere.

Finally, without our amazing filmmakers - not just the finalists but all of those who made films this year - there would be no Tropfest celebration. And we thank our keen fans for their unwavering support of this iconic event, which may have its home in Parramatta but is recognised and loved around the world.

So whether you’re a filmmaker, a long-time fan, a sponsor, or someone who is attending Tropfest for the first time, we welcome you to Tropfest this year and hope you have a wonderful experience of great food, wonderful music and stunning short films.

Sincerely,

John Polson Founder and Chair, Tropfest
