Art director

• The art director reports to the production designer, and more directly oversees artists and craftspeople, such as the set designer and set decorator, who carry out the production design.

Education/Training

• Formal EducationThere is not really any way you can really prepare to become an art director. Although you need a bachelor's or master's degree. Suggested majors are art or graphic design. Other majors you might want to consider are Photographic arts or computer applications technology. What you want out of your career can pretty much let you know what major you are best suited for.

Education Requirements • -Ability and passion to create memorable moving images and

advertising for a wide range of on-air and off air programming promotion. - Minimum of years of ad agency, broadcast network, or major cable network experience. - Must posses a demonstrable aptitude in creative problem solving and information gathering, with the ability to take a project from concept to completion. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills, superior time-management and organizational skills, with the aptitude to manage multiple projects and the ability to work in a collaborative, creative team environment providing art direction for the department and overall on-air brand development.

Common career paths

• Art directing is not an entry-level job. Media of any sort would be a good place to start where you can gain experience and develop skills. Get experience by working as an assistant to an art Director. It really is a great way to get experience. Working on school newspapers or websites is a good way to prepare for entry-level jobs.

• What goes wrong with an art director is they can come up with ideas for the film and the director may not like them

• causing a disagreement between the two people which could delay the production of the movie.

Equipment used

• A lot of art directors can use computer software these days so the computer is the most used tool. The programs do quite a lot. When we researched it there was a lot of technical stuff that was hard to understand.

• The set designer is the draftsman, often an architect, who realizes the structures or interior spaces called for by the production designer.

Education requirements

• You need a BA in Interior Design and an AA in Architecture. Some have Architecture degrees and some have no degrees at all .The only thing abut a set designer is the more education and experience, the better.

• Photoshop and Illustrator or Corel Draw are good to know. Vector Works is popular, and Rhino is often requested.

• Set design is one of the last hold-outs for preferring pencil drafting, computers are very slowly catching on.

• There are not many schools around. You can take classes in Set Design, Art Direction, and Production Design at UCLA Extension.

• Theatre is a common path for a set designer to make and maintain the look of the sets.

• Another common path for a set designer is to design sets for a series of TV shows.

• Working with a film industry on making sets for a movie
