The World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships 2011 | 2 – 8 April, 2011 Brisbane, Australia

Welcome to Moreton Bay Boys’ College and the 2011 World Individual Debating and Public

Speaking Championships.

I am delighted to welcome you not just to the College, but also to Brisbane, to Queensland,

where it is indeed beautiful one day and perfect the next (despite the occasional flood or

cyclone) and of course to Australia, the land ‘down under’. As you can see, this is a beautiful

campus – one that hosts a rare and endangered orchid - and a lovely setting on the hillside

overlooking the sand islands of Moreton Bay.

Moreton Bay Boys’ College was founded in 2003, and has been built on the foundations of

research, reason and relationships. We believe that the future lies with those who know how to

acquire knowledge, wherever it is to be found, (research), and then apply that knowledge to their

circumstances (reason) and finally relate well to themselves and others (relationships). This

is one of the reasons that I am so delighted that MBBC can be your host for the 2011 Worlds.

To speak well, we need to exercise research and reason, as well as being able to relate to our

audience.

As an International Baccalaureate Candidate school, committed to helping young men become

successful productive global citizens, it is wonderful to have the world come to our door. We

all look forward to spending time with you so that we can all learn from each other, and create

wonderful memories.

It is said that one of the most stressful things in life is public speaking. No doubt you are feeling

this right now. Yet by knowing we can speak well, we can gain enormous confidence in life. If you

are feeling nervous, remember that you have already done extremely well to be selected in your

national team. I trust though that you will also look beyond the competition, and take the time to

get to know your competitors and host families.

So enjoy the College, enjoy the championships, and enjoy all that Brisbane and Australia has

to offer. It is my hope that through these championships you will not just have a memorable

experience, but more importantly that you will have built life long friendships; and return home

blessed in the knowledge that you have both given of yourselves and received in return.

Dr Roderick Crouch

Principal

Moreton Bay Boys’ College

Dear Guests:

There are three

things to aim

at in public

speaking: first,

to get into your

subject, then to

get your subject

into yourself,

and lastly, to get

your subject into

the heart of your

audience.

– Alexander Gregg

Dear WIDPSC Friends,

As you may or may not know, the indigenous people of this great land have a culture rich with

stories, songs and dance. Their stories and songs were carried from tribe to tribe through

600 clans who all shared a unique relationship with the land and everything in it. It is hard to

say how far and for how long these stories travelled in the course of time over the Australian

continent, but it is here that the great storytelling tradition of Australia began - with the

passionate sharing of heart-felt wisdom.

John Ford said, you can speak well if your tongue can deliver the message of your heart, and

I guess that is essentially what Worlds is all about – delivering the passionate message of

your hearts. It is your ability to communicate and gain recognition and respect for your ideas

and opinions, which is particularly important in the Twenty-first Century. It is also the value

that we, as a public speaking community, place on the importance of this art of expression

that brings us together as such a special collegial group.

Already this year, the people of our planet have experienced war, natural disaster and

rebellion. These events which take place around our globe sometimes make it hard to

fathom the human condition and experience, let alone articulate it. However, we know that

because we live in such a rapidly changing world, in a social crucible of such diverse cultural

identities, that the ability to articulate and engage sophisticatedly in the debate of ideas

is becoming a more necessary skill. In our world rich with cultural diversity, it will be the

ability to communicate with generosity, kindness and respect for each other’s human dignity

that will ensure we not just survive but that we thrive as a people. And this is the task that

lies ahead of you; to fervently and yet respectfully, debate your thoughts and ideas with your

international peers; to form friendships; and take home a greater understanding of each

other.

It has taken many months to pull together WIDPSC 2011 in the land “Down Under” that I can

hardly believe that April has finally arrived. My hard work is done – yours is but to begin.

So it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the World Individual Debating and Public

Speaking Championships of 2011. May your Australian experience be everything that you

thought it would be.

As George Washington said you cannot restrain the voices of the multitude and so I hand it over

to you. This is your event, make it fabulous and enjoy every moment of your days in Brisbane,

at Moreton Bay Boys’ College, at the 24th WIDPSC. I will not wish you luck; you already have

what it takes to succeed.
