The Native American tribes in North America used masks mainly to cause fear and, as a result, respect. They were used a lot in shamanist rituals, especially for therapeutic purposes. Other rituals ensured success in hunting, or honored divine entities.

Asia

It seems that in Asia, masks have had a great artistic role, especially in theaters. Their variety is very wide, from the very simple masks found in Tibet or Borneo to the more aesthetically elaborate used in the Noh theater, in Japan. We've probably all seen the Dragon mask in the celebrations of the Chinese New Year.

Africa

Very important in various aspects of African culture, masks are present in all particular events of life, and in rituals. Their role is religious, as a symbol of sacred forces, educational, as they're part of the socialization of individuals, and even political, being a an instrument of pressure and authority on the society.
