    NITs decide their admission procedure:

Board scores and JEE Main to count

The word is out for everyone who is aiming to get an admission in NITs for undergraduate

courses in engineering (from 2013 onwards).

In a meeting conducted on July 4th

2012, NITs have embraced the new pattern by deciding togive 40 percent weightage to board scores and the rest 60% to JEE Main. The meeting was

    headed by Mr. Kapil Sibal.

Here are the key points of the procedure:

    1. Combined weightage to boards and JEE Main: 60% to JEE main and 40% to normalizedboard scores would be given.

    2. If you are aiming at NITs, no need for JEE Advanced: Initially the NITs had decided togive 40% weightage to board scores and 30% each to JEE main and JEE Advanced. As the NITs

dont wish to increase the stress of students, they have decided not to include the advanced test

scores. Students aiming at NITs wont have to appear for the advanced exam. NITs feel thatas the two exams would be on two separate days, including JEE advanced scores would just add

    to the stress of students.

    3. Normalization of board scores: As decided earlier, a formula for normalization would beused for making the scores across different boards comparable. A special committee comprising

NIT directors, CBSE chairman and other experts would look into the normalization issue.

The meeting was held a week after IITs and MHRD finally came to a compromise and decided

on a pattern for IITs. Read this article to understand the complete procedure for IIT admission

test:MHRD and IITs finally reach an agreement: New JEE pattern finalized.

Want to crack JEE Main and JEE Advanced?

How to begin the preparation for JEE Main

and JEE Advanced?Even though the argument between the government and the IITs about thenew JEE patternended late

last month, students are still perplexed. They are unsure of how to begin their preparation for JEE Main

and JEE Advanced. The advise to students is to start their preparation now without losing any more

    time.

If you have 2 years in hand, i.e. if you are in class XI:

    1. Start your preparation with Maths: To understand Physics and Physical Chemistryconcepts properly, you must have a basic understanding of Maths concepts.

    2. Starting point of Maths must be

    Algebra:

    a) To begin with Algebra, start with Quadratic Equations. You already have a basic

understanding of this topic from class X, therefore it mustnt be too problematic.

    b) The next chapter must be Arithmetic, Geometric and Harmonic Progressions. This must befollowed by Permutation and Combinations. Binomial Theorem must follow. This must be

followed by Logarithmic Series, and Exponential Series. Follow this up with Complex Numbers.

    3. Trigonometry is unit of Maths that you should study after Algebra. Its concepts are not

difficult to understand, but the problems are a bit tricky, so you must use good IIT JEE study

    material for it.

    4. Move on to Physics now, and kick-start with Units and Dimensions.

    5. Now, before you start Kinematics, get a basic understanding of Vectors and (Integral

and Differential) Calculus. This might be a little inconvenient, because these chapters are a part

of class XII Maths syllabus. But try to follow this sequence anyway, because once you have a

fundamental understanding of these topics, you can follow the subsequent Physics chapters mucheasily.

    6. Meanwhile, you must start practising the problems of the Mathematics portion that you havefinished.

    7. After you are done with the Kinematics portion of Physics syllabus, you can move on to

chapters like Newtons Law of Motion, Work, Power and Energy, Rotational Motion and

Gravitation. Study a little Electrostatics as well.

    8. This is when you should start with Chemistry. Atomic Structure should be the topic you

    must begin with.

    9. After Atomic Structure carry on with Periodicity. Follow this up with Bonding and then come

    back to Periodicity again.

    10. After this you can carry on with the rest of the syllabus of Physical Chemistry according to

the sequence of chapters in your NCERT book.

    11. The reason this sequence must be followed is because after you are done with the initial

Physics topics as mentioned above, itd be easier to understand the topic Atomic Structure.

This in turn would help you understand Periodicity better.

    12. After this, you can continue with the IIT JEE syllabus of all the three subjectssimultaneously, while solving the problems as well.

What if a student has just one year in hand?

    1. Students who have already passed class XII and are planning to drop: These students

must execute the same plan as above, but (as is obvious) at a faster pace.

    2. Students in XII class, who have a good conceptual understanding of the class XI portion, can

give a quick revision of the XI portion during their summer vacations, and then proceed with

their XII syllabus. These students have to prepare simultaneously for boards as well, and theymust try and finish the board syllabus as soon as possible. This would allow them enough time

later for the revision of JEE syllabus.

Students undertaking crash courses for 2-5 months

    1. Just follow the syllabus and solve previous year papers, because there isnt much time to do

anything else. You can go through simple concepts. Do not make the mistake of trying to

understand complicated concepts in such short time, because you wont be able to retain

    difficult concepts in such case.
