Palm Sunday Parade
March 29, 2015 10:55 am Worship Service All children and their families too,
are invited to be a part of our Palm
Sunday Parade! Please join the
celebration as we wave palm
branches together, remembering
and praising Jesus on this very
special Sunday! Along with the
wonderful joy of having our children
and their families, we would also
welcome any youth and adults (all
ages) who would like to join in this
parade. How happy and delightful it
would be for different generations to
come together for this parade – just
like it was on the day Jesus rode into
Jerusalem many years ago.
Important Note:
Please gather in the
Roy Johnson room by
10:45 am to line up for the
parade. Palm branches will
be given out at this time.
After the parade, any

welcome and look forward to Vacation Bible School being a church wide ministry involving children, youth assistants and
adults of many ages!

God wants us to move!
God wants us to act!
God wants us to care!
God wants us to follow!
God wants us to share!
Let’s go!
FUMC is recommitting itself to being healthier disciples for Christ. As a church we offer a number of physical fitness opportunities and support programs for prevention
and awareness and pastoral support about diseases and health conditions. This year the Congregation-
al Ministry Team will be aligning our programs into a more cohesive whole and offer new opportunities
to members to be healthier disciples.
We have been chosen to become a pilot program for Community Health Ministry through Pardee
Hospital Foundation. The Community Health Ministry will provide us with many services and benefits,
including:
* The integration of faith and health into a holistic healing process.
* Help in bringing attention to members' health concerns and encouragement to seek medical attention
for symptoms we might otherwise ignore.
* Acting as a liaison between members and appropriate community agencies and services.
* Recruiting volunteers and training them to support the overall goals of the health ministry.
* Coordinating support groups to meet specific needs of our faith community.
* Assisting members with access to the healthcare system, and ensuring we receive the services we
need.
As people of faith, we acknowledge that our body is the temple of God and that we are wonderfully
made to live an abundant life of health and wholeness (I Corinthians 6:19, Psalm 139:14, John
10:10). In order to live out the example of Jesus Christ - someone who dedicated his life to healing the
sick, guiding the lost, comforting the downcast, and even raising the dead - a church initiative in well-
ness and prevention seeks to provide people of faith with the tools necessary to lead healthier, more
fulfilling lives.
If YOU want to be a part of this new ministry, please contact Pastor Annie at [email protected] by
March 20th. We will host a Wonderful Wednesday presentation on April 8th to educate the church about
some options we can undertake as a church to become healthier disciples for Christ.

Recently a couple of us on the Spiritual Formation team were discussing our bottom line… If our team task is to bring a
variety of opportunities for spiritual formation to the congregation, how do we collectively define “spiritual formation” in our
vision? Our team leader, Rev. Alex Knight shared that he always goes back to scripture, specifically 2 Corinthians 2:16-18. So
this month, let us all contemplate the meaning of spiritual formation in our own hearts. Let us also ask what practices and
disciplines we each can make in this endeavor. May we suggest starting with these verses and read them through the lenses
of various translations and interpretations.
They suddenly recognize that God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. When God is personally
present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We’re free of it! All of us! Nothing between us
and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face. So we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives
gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him. The Message
When one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is
freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed
into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.
New Revised Standard Version
Whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is,
there is freedom. We all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-
increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. New International Version
How might you define “spiritual formation”? How might you write these verses in your words? How might you be transformed
in God’s glory?
Big Thank you!!
We have exceeded our goal in raising money for Stop Hunger Now! We brought in $3,770 and will
now be able to pack 13,000 meals (rather than 10,000) at .29 per meal on
Sunday, March 1. We also brought in $1,710.88 and 360 pounds of canned food for our local IAM.
That brings the total to $5,480.88 for the hungry. God is so good! Thank you all so much for your
Serve Sunday: STOP HUNGER NOW Sunday, March 1 from 4-6:30pm: Students will be
bagging 13,000 meals for Stop Hunger Now and we
will end with a pizza supper. Please mark this date
on your calendar!! You will need to sign up
by February 25 to participate.
Middle School Youth Conference: Our middle school students will be going to Charlotte, NC from March 13-14th for a youth confer-
ence, filled with great speakers, worship and dramas! The theme this year is “Stand Out.” Students
will leave the conference with a clear understanding that culture doesn’t have to sweep them away.
Like Daniel, they can be firm and stand out. Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to the pattern of
this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...”

Agape Feeding Program at Cherry Street Please give prayerful consideration to joining this outreach ministry which has been in progress for the past year.
On the 3rd Sunday of each month, from 3:30-5:30, volunteers from FUMC Partner with Providence Baptist Church to feed the
undernourished and hungry at a small church on Cherry Street.
There is a need for substitute/rotating workers. Our scheduling will provide opportunities six weeks in advance and avoids
last minute calls.
Once Joseph Outreach Ministry doors are opened, this feeding will relocate to the site on Seventh Avenue. At time we will
expand our volunteer list once again for the serving. For further information, please contact Mary Reeves, [email protected] or
call 828.749.9809.
Military Ministry Moments (“Boots On the Ground” Military Ministry Team (MMT) at First United Methodist Church)
Our Congregational Care Team and the Dietary Team, under the leadership of Bev Fredericks, has a wonderful history in
hosting the Honor Banquet for our 148 Veterans. Care-Boxes have been mailed to many active military personnel linked with
our congregation. We continue to distribute requested items Charles George Veterans Hospital in Asheville.
Colleen Schnitzer, Director of Youth Ministry asked the youth to make Valentines to deliver in February. Gently used books
and large bars of soap are on the request list. This list is posted in the Military Big Box located in the hall closet near the Re-
ception Desk. This year our MMT plan expanding to partner in support for active military personnel in harm’s way. Additional
focus is on the children and spouse. You will be seeing more of this acronym, NCARNG that is N.C. Caring “Guarding Families
on the Homefront. This is encompassing all branched of the military, active and veterans. As we meet with church, civic
groups and the Family Assistance Specialist, I will send more details, and of course, more request! For instance, the North
Carolina MVP (for all branches of the Military) will be naming a day in April as Military Child Day and in May for Military
Spouses’ Day.
These numbers show Who, Why and Where support is needed:
North Carolina has the third highest active duty military personnel.
N.C. is home to nearly 135,000 active-duty military members, reservists and National Guard personnel. We have 775,000
veterans living in North Carolina. Since December 2014, our state has deployed 1000 service personnel overseas.
Oh, my! Is Amy (or Amos) dying?" This is the initial reaction many people have when they see a new prayer quilt hanging in the hallway
outside the Royal-Allen Room.
That's really the wrong question. Prayer quilts are placed there for the members of our church -- and
others -- to say a prayer and tie a prayer knot for someone who is associated with First UMC and
who has had a life-altering event or illness. All you need to know is that someone in our church family
needs your prayers for healing, comfort, and care. Mary Ann Gooch received the very first Prayer
Quilt in May 2003 after a tragic accident that changed her life. She is still alive and active in our
church. Did you know that 75% of the 238 quilt recipients are survivors?
The next time you see a quilt hanging there, ask yourself if God hears the prayers of His saints,
instead of asking, "What's wrong with So-and-So?" Send the recipient of the quilt your message of
love and concern by tying a knot and praying for healing and comfort.
The names given come from our ministerial staff. They are consulted before a name is applied to the quilt and it is placed in
the hallway. These are usually members of FUMC or are in some way closely affiliated with the church. If you feel your life has
been totally derailed by an accident or illness, please contact Dan, Annie, or Christy at the church.
This is a ministry of blessing to those who labor lovingly every 1st and 3rd Wednesday from 9 am to 11:30 am in the Roy
Johnson room. If you'd like to participate in this ministry of creativity and sharing, to bring blessing and comfort to those in our
church family who are facing a life-altering event, please join us. Contact Leone Alexander at [email protected] or
828-697-1732.
Relay for Life ~ Circles of Hope, Love and Remembrance We all know that Cancer doesn’t discriminate individuals by age and as a result we are asking every member of our church
family to be a part of a planned activity. We (The Relay for Life Team) are asking each person, no matter how young or how
advanced in age you might be, to take just a few moments to write the name(s) of someone you know, on a strip of paper that
will be supplied, of a person who has had or currently has Cancer. We will construct an “old time” paper chain of all of the
names beginning Sunday, March 1st, and will continue through Wednesday, March 25th, and display it the night of our kick off
BBQ dinner on Monday, April 20, 2015, 5:30 in the Barber Christian Life Center. What a wonderful way to honor the lives of
those who have lost the battle and those who are still fighting. We are thanking you in advance for your support with this
project.
Missions Page 8 What is Hendersonville First UMC doing about cancer? A “Relay for Life” team has been formed at our church and is working to support our friends and
families who are dealing with cancer. Our goal is to raise awareness, through research, of the
causes, prevention, and cures for cancer.
This year, we are trying a new approach by having teams. Our team facilitator is Judy Nutwell.
These are the teams this year:
Circle of Support: Team leader TBA
Communication/Education: Leone Alexander and Ken Perkins, team leaders
BBQ dinner at FUMC: Carolyn Walberg, team leader
Fundraising: June Raube, team leader
Participation in the Relay for Life at Jackson Park, May 15, 2015: Steve Babcock, team leader
You can be in on the support by joining our team and becoming active in one of these teams, making the job so much easier
for our team. For more information, call Judy Nutwell at 828-388-1096. Remember: cancer touches everyone’s life in some
way! Research is VERY important. For more information, go to http://www.cancer.org/research/acsresearchupdates/index
Research updates from the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society is the largest non-governmental source of funds for cancer research in the U.S. It gets results
by investing in various research efforts to help us understand cancer’s causes, determine how best to prevent it, and discover
new ways to cure it. Funding groundbreaking cancer research has put us at the forefront of the scientific battle against this
disease.
Joseph’s Center Update Work on the Joseph’s Center is moving with a steady pace as electricians, plumbers, and carpenters complete their work for
bringing the building up to code. While they finish up the things which must meet code for an occupancy permit, many church
and community volunteers are installing cabinets, carpet, painting walls and scrubbing floors. With donations of paint,
bathroom and kitchen fixtures, stoves, refrigerators, washers and driers, office and kitchen supplies, tables and chairs,
Joseph’s Center is moving closer to opening every day. Transforming a space which had been empty for two years and once
the home of plumbing supplies into a holy space for enhancing the spiritual, physical, and economic needs of persons has not
been an easy task. But with the support of many from FUMC and the community we have moved closer to opening.
Donations to Joseph’s Center can be made directly to Joseph’s Outreach Ministries at PO Box 2844 Hendersonville, NC
28793 or through FUMC. If you would like to volunteer at the Center, call or email Dee West: [email protected]
402.490.7012. If you would like to know more about Joseph’s Center you can contact Anita Oldham at [email protected]
910.515.3244 or Austin Watson [email protected] 803.463.5143.
ZOE ~ EXCITING NEWS! With your donations, FUMC has paid off our three year commitment to the three ZOE groups we partnered with in 2013
(Umugisha in Rwanda) and 2014 (Ikezere in Rwanda and Amani Athi in Kenya). Additionally, we have raised enough money to
partner with an additional group in Rwanda, giving us a total of three working groups there, and to join with another church in
our conference to partner with a working group in Chennai, India, the newest outreach for ZOE. This means that we are the
proud parents of nearly 500 orphaned children across the world!
Your amazing commitment to the empowerment of children who have lived with hunger, abuse and exploitation is a power-
ful example of Christ’s love for God’s creation. You are instruments of redemption to children who have known little of God’s
love previously.
Our two new groups are just now forming. They will pick their group’s name, elect officers, and choose an adult mentor from
their community. Then a series of training events will be held to teach them to grow crops, take care of their health through
good hygiene practices and nutritional cooking, and prepare them to start small businesses to sustain their families. Younger
children will be reintegrated into school. In a couple of months we will receive the name of our groups along with the mem-
bers’ names and pictures which will be printed in The WORD and available on our website.
The ZOE team is: Anna Hicks, Phoebe Timberlake, Christy Sharp and Carol Watson. For more information, contact one of
them or visit zoehelps.org. Carol Watson is leading a mission team to Kenya July 1-10. If you are interested in joining the
team to visit our group in Kenya, contact her at 685-1089. To donate to our new groups, write a check to FUMC and put ZOE
on the memo line.
Cuba Mission Trip On Monday March 9th at 5:30 Mark Siler will speak to all who are interested in going to Cuba this Spring to create a new
FUMC congregation to Cuban congregation relationship, and to research how we might send mission teams to Cuba in the
future. Please attend and bring your passport; we will need your commitment by March 11th in order to get Visas.

A big THANK YOU to Bob and Jane Barker for designing our new parking map for the church. This will
be helpful for visitors and members alike.
Dear Friends,
My sister Cathy Sigmon and I, along with Steve and Lee, send our heartfelt thanks to all you
amazing folks who lovingly rallied around us last month upon the death of our 98-year-old
father. Our entire family was deeply touched by all the love and kindness you showered on us!
Your hearty hugs, your comforting calls, your prayers of support, your thoughtful cards, and your absolutely outstanding
culinary offerings all sustained us so lovingly through those first difficult days. (Beth E – If you hear rumors that I HID your
delicious “blondies” from the rest of the family and ate them all myself for breakfast … five days in a row … I’ll have to plead
“no contest.”) Our hearts overflow with gratitude that God has so richly blessed us with such special friends as you!
Bless you all. Linda Harney
Fourth Quarter Financial Update As we begin 2015, please allow us to thank you again for your continued faithfulness in giving and your support for our
church. Summarized below is an up-date of the church financial results for the year ending December 31, 2014
INCOME $ 1,609,350
EXPENSES $ 1,579,133
NET INCOME $ 30,217
As you can see, income exceeded expense by over $30,000 during 2014. We did underrun our revenue projections this
past year with unpledged income running well below expectations. However, expenses were lower than anticipated which
allowed us to run an operational surplus.
As we start 2015, our largest budget issues will be our income projections and the continued costs to maintain the church
facility. In the income areas we will be closely monitoring our unpledged giving. Maintenance and personnel costs continue to
be the two major expense areas to track.
Thank you again for your giving and support of the church. Please let me know if you have any questions.

A NEW PICTORIAL DIRECTORY! Our church will be working toward a new pictorial directory beginning in March. Sign-ups for photo sittings will begin on
Sunday, March 22, with pictures beginning the end of April. Every individual/family who has their photo taken will receive a free
copy of the new directory. This is a great tool for our church, so plan to participate. For more information about the new church
directory OR to volunteer with this effort, please contact Evie Reynolds, 828.698.0505 or [email protected].

Memorials and Gifts of Honor Become a 2016 General & Jurisdictional Conference
Delegate of the United Methodist Church. Any lay member of the United Methodist Church may be elected to fill one of 10
lay delegates to the 2016 General Conference and one of 20 lay delegates to the
2016 Jurisdictional Conference. General Conference is concerned with the United
Methodist Discipline and the organization of the general church and the Jurisdic-
tional Conference is primarily concerned with the issues of the Southeastern Juris-
diction and the election of Bishops.
At our Annual Conference, June 17-21, 2015, our lay delegates will be elect-
ed. To be publicly considered as a lay delegate you have until March 1, 2015 to
submit your nomination and pertinent information to be published in a Lay Dele-
gate Nominee Booklet.
The General Conference will be held in Portland, Oregon from May 10-20, 2016
and the Jurisdictional Conference will be held at Lake Junaluska from July 12-16,
2016. Accommodations and travel are supplied by the church and all delegates
should plan to commit to these blocks of time.
All delegates should anticipate large amounts of time during 2015 and 2016 in
study of petitions, mandatory attendance to delegate preparatory events, and a
spiritual sense of calling to this most important mission of the church. For more
information or questions contact Dan.
