Woodland families,
What a great place to be! Woodland Middle School is amidst beautiful trees
in fall colors! We have had a very productive 1st quarter. Woodland re-
ceived a gracious donation from Mark and Annette Johnson in association
with the Excel Foundation. The Excel Foundation also awarded Mrs. Ruch
and Mrs. Selby funding for their Digital Video Production class. These dona-
tions are greatly appreciated. Mr. Rogers and Mr. Emory had another suc-
cessful boat race/challenge at the McGrane pool. Over 200 students partic-
ipated and 460 parents came to watch and cheer. Great job science de-
partment! Woodland’s volleyball teams had a great season and we are
moving into basketball and wrestling. It is a lot of hard work and dedication
to keep up with both academics and athletics. We would also like to men-
tion a few reminders as we move into the colder temperatures. Please
make sure your students have clothing that will keep them warm when they
are outside in the morning and at lunch. We still go outside if it is raining
(depending). Our parking lot is still full in the morning, so please be kind
and courteous to other drivers so we get our students to school safely. Last-
ly, I want to remind you that our new advisory enrichment classes begin se-
cond quarter. This is a time when students are engaged in enrichment and
remediation classes. Our dedicated teachers have worked very hard in ways
to help all students learn. The enrichment program encourages students to
take “elective” style classes. Some of these include: rocketry, robotics, jazz
band, WWII history, and etc. Our enrichment teachers are excited to offer
these. Thanks for all of the support our wonderful community provides!
Have a great month.

The path toward higher education is often confusing and hard to navigate. Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a program designed to make that path a lot more clear and easy to follow for your students. Beginning in middle school we take day trips to various colleges, universities, and other higher learning institutions in the area. We do career workshops and field trips, financial aid workshops, scholarship workshops and a wide variety of other college-oriented activities. This continues throughout high school with the added bonus of direct one-to-one help with an academic Advisor that helps your student with FAFSA, scholarships, college applications, SAT/ACT, career exploration, tutoring and more. This program is designed to help your child develop a much deeper understanding of educa-tional opportunities that are available to them, and how they can access those opportuni-ties.
This is a FREE program for those who qualify.
Two thirds of our students are first college generation (meaning neither of their parents have a bachelor’s degree) and are income eligible. Just because you may not fit into either of those categories does not mean that you’re student doesn’t qualify for the program.
Please feel free to call 208-292-2539 or you can email the ETS Advisor for Woodland, Randy Palmer at [email protected] for more information.
You can also pick up an application at the front office of Woodland Middle School.

This holiday season, give the gift that never stops giving: literacy.
The “Jingle Books” book drive campaign is dedicated to placing books in the hands of Coeur d’Alene School District students from kindergarten through third grade. The program is devoted to promoting reading proficiency by the end of third grade.
Collection boxes are in the school office where people can donate new and gently used books. Age-appropriate books are requested to help foster a love or reading and allow the children who receive them to be interested in the topic.
Please bring your donation station in the school office. Donations will be picked up on December 11th.
For more information call Greta Gissel at 819-8345 or email
We would like to invite you to conference night on November 12,
2014 from 4:30-6:30 pm. This is a conference to touch base with
you on your child’s progress. These will be student-led confer-
ences with the teachers circulating to answer questions. Confer-
ences will be conducted in a group setting in each grade level
pod. Each conference has been scheduled for 15 minutes by stu-
dent’s last name.
The intent of student-led conferences is to have each of the stu-
dents lead the conference and take personal responsibility for
their academic performance. We feel it is important for each stu-
dent to self-evaluate his/her work and to use effective communi-
cation skills to inform you of his/her progress. We intend for this to
be a valuable interaction between you and your child.
If you feel the need to discuss anything with your child’s teacher
(s), they will be available in the pod area. Also, meetings can be
arranged before or after school if you need a more private set-
ting, or more time. Please, contact Mr. Brown or Ms. Valenzuela in
the front office to schedule an appointment.
Each student has prepared a portfolio of their work and has been
trained to conduct the conference. We look forward to seeing
you and your student at the conferences.
Thank you for supporting your child and their educators by partici-
pating in these conferences.
Sincerely,
Woodland Staff

PTA NEWS [email protected]
Hey! Glad to see you back at the PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) News Corner!! Let’s just dive right into the happenings of the PTSA! Yeah!!! I’m stoked to tell you that the PTSA now has a pretty sick (sick means sweet, cool, amazing) webpage thanks to our social media Mama and VP of PTSA – Jenny Duncan! Our webpage can be found on the Woodland Middle School website under Parents, then PTA. On our webpage you can find the following and SO MUCH MORE: how to get involved, meeting dates, meeting notes, Grizz Wear ordering link, pics of us in action and just recently we added a happenings section, which keeps you abreast of weekly happenings with the PTSA. This will be a great way to find out what’s happening in the PTSA world in between News Corners. Please note that there is still the vacant spot of Secretary on the PTSA Board of Directors. If this sounds like a position in which you would excel, drop us a line at [email protected]. Also, in our last edition we mentioned the need for help with fundraising! We are thankful to say that our Treasurer, Heidi Reasor, took on the enormous responsibility of heading up our school’s fundraiser! In the news to come we’ll share the results of our Jelly Belly fundraiser! Speaking of fundraising, we want to share the results of our Box Top Contest, which ended October 24. Our top three winners were Noah Coll with 613 Box Tops, Samantha Weaser with 236, and Benjamin Janke with 209 Box Tops! Our school sent in 2,300 Box Tops which earned Woodland Middle School $230.00! Thanks to each of you for clipping and sending in those Box Tops! But please don’t stop collecting, as there will be another Box Top Contest February 1-20! Also special thanks to the four Mama’s who clipped, checked expiration dates, and sorted in baggies groups of 50 Box Tops at the Box Top Cutting Party!
Did you know that every Tuesday during advisory your student is talking about bullying? Ask your budding teen to tell you the four school rules regarding bullying and if they are actively seeking to carry them out on a daily bases. If you want to know what your student is learning and discussing about bullying please join the Anti-Bullying Committee on November 3 at 3:00 pm here at Woodland Middle School’s Library!
Well that concludes another edition of our news. But before you go, here is a thought to ponder with your budding teen! “Character is like a tree and reputation is like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” ~ Abraham
Lincoln

Pumpkins: Good for the Plate…not just the Porch
Pumpkin, beloved for its role in fall décor and enjoyed by families everywhere when carved into masterpieces, is also an impressive source of nutrients when added to our diet. Pumpkins are very high in fiber yet low in calories. An amazing source of vitamin A, one cup of mashed pumpkin pro-vides more than 200% of your recommended daily intake. Vitamin A is important for healthy eye-sight. There’s more to the pumpkin than the flesh; roasted pumpkin seeds are a tasty treat that pack a good nutritional punch of their own. Research has shown the seeds, which are high in nutri-ents called phytosterols, help lower your bad cholesterol. For more information on pumpkin nutri-tion and yummy recipes, visit the Nutrition Services home page at www.cdaschools.org.
