- Suhani Tiwari A word no smaller than 'phenomenon' could describe Harry Potter for our generation. A be-spectacled , lanky ,little boy; ill-treated by his only living relatives, all alone in the world, fighting not just the loneliness in his life but also the feeling of being abnormal in some way; this character was drafted since the very beginning in a way that provoked sympathy in the hardest of hearts..

The journey begins when Harry is just an 11 year old. He fumbles with his new found identity, makes friends , encounters some phantoms of his unknown past, and experiences a head-on with the 'Darkest Wizard of All Time', the infamous He Who Must Not Be Named. The read-er weeps with Harry when Dumbledore tells him that it was the power of his mother's love for him that saved him from the killing curse when he was a baby. The emotions of a boy who wants to weep but does not want his tears to be seen register with the reader, his pain can be felt. While the first three installments of the series are Children's books essentially, J K Rowling achieves the amazing feat of making Harry grow along with his avid readers. The following in-stallments contain emotions like love, jealousy, darkness, fear, loss; and make us witness the coming of age of the protagonist so effectively- his thoughts echo in our heads, we can un-derstand why Harry yells at Hermione in frustration when everyone thinks he is a nutcase to believe Voldemort has returned from the dead , and why he insists on digging the grave for Dobby the house elf, rather than burying it using magic.

Page 4: The wonder that is Harry Potter

Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire is the turning point in the basic attitude of the series- it is here that Harry becomes the hero , and starts getting equipped to fulfill his destiny. Till this point Harry was just a kid whose life was in danger and everybody was out to protect him from any harm. It is here that he sets out as a man on a mission, who wants revenge for his parents' death.

Another USP of the series is the ease with which all the characters have been carved so dis-tinctly , it's difficult to absorb that all the characters are actually the product of one person's imagination. With Dumbledore's cryptic monologues ("..but in essence divided?.."), and Ha-grid's "..Arr..", Rowling has spun a web of creativity so intricate , the reader gets to know on his own , , which character is supposed to be saying the words that he/she is reading.

I fell in love with Harry when I chanced upon a book (Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix) that I was getting in exchange for a prized Agatha Christey that I owned. I had agreed to this exchange after much deliberation, needless to say, I have not enjoyed any book immensely after that, because subconsciously I start comparing the current writer's prowess to that of my idol , the lady who gave Hogwarts to our world . Being fully aware that these words give the impression of having been borrowed from a hard-core Harry Potter Fan page, I would still recommend Harry Potter to anyone who can read !! You are missing out on a literary experience of a lifetime!

To open the door to the world of magic, just say- Caput Draconis!

Had IMNU been Hogwarts, We'd always be on time for lectures thanks to our Firebolts We'd finish our assignments with Magic Quills, We'd send Howlers to our friends who top in exams We'd use a diluminator whenever the professor came to check our notebooks for case studies Use our invisibility cloaks to sneak out of lectures after attend-ance, We'd have Quidditch games insted of cricket and girls would be allowed to bully the boys openly! We'd use two way mirrors to copy assignments and in examina-tions, Hermione's handbag would be enough for the entire day.. lec-tures, sports, entertainment, all in one! We'd all wear wizard hats on our convocation. and in the end, we'd all go back home in Hogwarts Express and hope to get back soon to the magical world of Hogwarts!

1) I would have used broomstick to travel from hostel to classes and vice-versa. 2) Quiddich would have been main game for inter college tourna-ments. 3) Defense against dark arts would have been my Major and Potions making my minor. 4) Section names would have been Gryffindor, Slytherin and Ravenclaw instead of A,B,C. 5) Section average would have been very high since each year will have Hermoine granger. 6) Would have used Diffindo to cut grasses on Football ground to play a good match. 7) Accio books would have been best at the time when you realize in class that you forgot it in room. 8) We could have used the spell muffliato to talk as per our wish in class. 9) Stairs in our hostel would directly lead us to the room instead of using lift. 10) Instead of various events, all focus would have been on Goblet of Fire.

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.” ― Roald Dahl The disappointment of not having got an owl from Hogwarts has still not sunken in, yet why should it let us stop in creating & enjoying the magic in the world around us. No matter how far-fetched the idea may seem, it sure brings to life one of our deepest held fantasies; that of having a Hogwards-like institution. No doubt, the invisibility cloaks, the Time turners, the elves, the Forbidden Forest, the spells, the flying brooms have kept many of us hooked all these years. How interesting would it be to have a degree in “Magic in Business Administra-tion” where marketing classes would consist of lessons in how to use the Legili-mens Spell to get inside the minds of the customers and know their needs, and Fi-nance lessons taught us the use of Wingardium Leviousa spells to bring up the stocks of a company. The mere thought of having house elves come for your laundry pick up is motivation enough to get our clothes dirtier, after all “”Daag Ache Hai.” A dash of magic love potion spilt in the acrid tasting jaljeera juice or tomato soup of the person you pine for, could have spiced up the on goings at IMNU even more. The daily sight of students scurrying for the 8am morning lec-tures could be replaced by the sights of brooms fleeting by instead everyday.(Apparition inside the college allowed only for the 2nd year students having passed he Apparition tests.) Quidditch would surely have been the biggest eye catcher event of Parakram & National Champions League. The Monday routine of putting on the formals could have been even more exciting if the attire for the day were cloaks and robes. Imaginations are limitless when one starts daydreaming on the possibilities of a

Hogwarts-like-experience at IMNU, yet as professor Dumbledore said, “It does

not do, to dwell on dreams and forget to live, remember that..!!.”

Page 9: The wonder that is Harry Potter

Though Hermione tore a page out of a library book about magical creatures without being cursed, jinxed, or hexed by the book. How she did this is unknown!!

The more interesting library is the restricted section. Books from the Restricted Sec-tion require a signed note from a teacher to be checked out. Professor Dumbledore removed the books pertaining to the subject of Horcruxes, due to the fact that they involve such Dark Magic. He kept them in his office until his death, whence Hermione Granger summoned them before departing in her sixth year.

Imagine this library at IMNU… wouldn’t you be spending all your time here??

One of the best libraries in the

world is also The Hogwarts Library is located on the third floor of Hogwarts Castle. It contains tens of thousands of books on thousands of shelves. Overseen by Madam Pince, the library is where students can go to peruse or borrow books to supple-ment their studies (or for personal enjoyment). The library closes at 8:00 pm. The interesting part is: the library books havevarious spells on them to prevent students from defac-ing or stealing them.

Joanne “Jo” Rowling, with the pen name J. K.

Rowling is not a new name in this world. She is

a British novelist who created a new world

among our world, with her Harry Potter series.

Potter books have gained worldwide attention,

won multiple awards, and sold more than

400 million copies.. They have become

the best-selling book series in history, and

been the basis for a series of films which has

become the highest-grossing film series in his-

tory.

Born in Yate, Gloucestershire, Rowling was

working as researcher and bilin-

gual secretary for Amnesty International when

she conceived the idea for the Harry Pot-

ter series on a delayed train from Manchester

to London in 1990. For adult readers she has

started a new series The Cuckoo’s Calling and

The Casual Vacancy, under pen name Robert

Galbraith.

Rowling has led a "rags to riches" life story, in

which she progressed from living on state ben-

efits to multi-millionaire status within five

years.

Rowling has named Communist and civil rights activist Jessica Mitford as "[her] most influential writer" saying, "Jessica Mitford has been my heroine since I was

14 years old, when I overheard my formidable

great-aunt discussing how Mitford had run away

at the age of 19 to fight with the Reds in

the Spanish Civil War". n an interview

with Oprah Winfrey, Rowling gave credit to her

mother for the success of the series saying that

"the books are what they are because she

died...because I loved her and she died"

Rowling is very attached to her books. She said

that if she hadn’t written these books she

would’ve been very depressed. Harry Potter

brought her out of the dark phase of her life.

About Goblet of fire Rowling admitted that she

had had a moment of crisis while writing the

novel

Page 11: The wonder that is Harry Potter

"Halfway through writing Four, I realized there was a serious fault with the plot ... I've had

some of my blackest moments with this book ... One chapter I rewrote 13 times, though no-

one who has read it can spot which one or know the pain it caused me.". During a year peri-

od when Rowling was completing the last book, she allowed herself to be filmed for a docu-

mentary which aired in Britain on ITV on 30 December 2007. It was entitled J K Rowling...

A Year In The Life and showed her returning to her old Edinburgh tenement flat where she

lived, and completed the first Harry Potter book.. Re-visiting the flat for the first time re-

duced her to tears, saying it was "really where I turned my life around completely"

Her parting note to the wizarding world was,

We’ll miss you, Potty-wee-Potter !!!!
