WELCOMEFrom Seattle Theatre Group, a non-profit arts organization

Welcome to the first production in the KeyBank Broadway at the Paramount

2013/2014 season!

THE WIZARD OF OZ is a great example of a purely timeless story. L. Frank Baum

wrote the novel, The Wonderful World of the Wizard of Oz, in 1900. With Baum

turning the novel into a musical himself in 1902, followed by the film release in

1939, we still look forward to this story that instructs us on the importance of

looking inward for our courage, heart, intelligence and a willingness to face our

own fears.

These qualities resonate universally and at Seattle Theatre Group, we regularly

experience the necessity for employing courage, heart, and intelligence as a

non-profit performing arts organization.

To care for historic venues The Paramount, The Moore and The Neptune certainly

takes courage, heart and innovation. We credit Ida Cole with the courage to see

her dream through all of the obstacles to establish a non-profit organization to

care for these beautiful venues. She knew and understood the significance of the

history contained within these walls and her determination to secure that history

for future generations is responsible for our ability to continue bringing the work

of people like L. Frank Baum and Andrew Lloyd Webber into our community.

While sitting in this beautiful 1928 structure, what may not be immediately

apparent is the current development work that also happens right here. Our

education and community programs give us the ability to broaden the hearts

and minds of young people. The programs presented in the community and

within the walls of these historic theatres are intended to deepen the significance

of performances for young people through interactions with artists, inspire their

dreams through training and performance, and assure that they have access to

the beautiful world of performing arts. This is how we build heart.

As a not-for-profit performing arts organization, we have to employ innovative

and smart techniques and planning to stay in the game, just like all of the other

wonderful arts organizations in our community. Seattle may not be Oz, but it

is the Emerald City and a place where intelligence and innovation inspires the

world. We are genuinely inspired by your presence and support of the arts.

Thank you for coming and we hope you enjoy the show!

Benjamin Schrader was raised in the Eastside community of Issaquah, Washington, and began his acting career at the regionally acclaimed Village Theatre. Working his way through the seasons on and off stage, Ben was able to branch out to the other Seattle area venues, performing in locally produced productions at The 5th Avenue Theatre (Hair, 1776) and The Village Theatre (West Side Story, Joseph…Dreamcoat). Ben relocated to New York City in 2002, and has returned to perform in Seattle a few times over the years. He is back Oct. 30-Nov. 3, with Peter and The Starcatcher. We took a few minutes with Ben prior to his return.

Q Do you have a favorite scene in Peter and The Starcatcher? If so, why?A The opening of Act 1 is a thrilling piece of staging. An incredible amount of exposition

delivered directly to the audience while establishing the rules of the play. When I first saw Starcatcher’s opening sequence on Broadway I knew I was in for a unique and exciting evening of theatre.

Q After being on tour, what have you come to appreciate about the Pacific Northwest?A The Northwest will always be my home. I grew up in Issaquah, cutting my teeth at The Village

Theatre and The 5th Avenue. Between the vibrant arts scene, the freshest food around, and the beauty of its landscape, the Pacific Northwest is a travelers dream.

Q Was there an influential moment, a “tipping point”, in your life that led you to a career path in acting?

A Again, being immersed in all the arts and culture that the northwest has to offer, I was fortunate to be saturated with great theatre. From the first moment I was exposed to the traveling tours that came through the Paramount and the 5th Avenue as well as the top-notch productions produced locally, I was hooked.

Q Where is your favorite place to unwind and relax in Seattle?A I love the Queen Anne area. The eateries and coffee shops there get better every time I visit.

Also, Capitol Hill takes me back to good memories of rushing to my scene study classes at Cornish College of the Arts and late night burgers at Dick’s.

Q Do you have a favorite coffee spot in Seattle?A Love the Bauhaus coffee shop near the Paramount. Grab yourself a good book and a

cappuccino and my rainy afternoon is spoken for.

Q If you were able to give the person you were 5 years ago a piece of advice, what would it be?A Enjoy the present moment. A life in the theatre and in the arts in general can be a challenging

road and sometimes all we focus on is getting to the next level of success. It’s so important to take a breath and take stock in the now.

Q What are you looking forward to in the upcoming year?A I’m excited about bringing this play to new audiences all over the country. There are regional

and socioeconomic differences from city to city but the power of imagination and the urge to play is in each and every one of us. Rekindling an audience’s capacity to pretend makes this a thrilling job.

Seattle City Light recently supported installation of new lights throughout The Paramount Theatre that will result in significant annual savings for Seattle Theatre Group. About 4,800 lights at The Paramount have been replaced with energy efficient LEDs, compact florescent lamps and T-8 tubing, a switch that will save STG approximately $43,000 per year.

The total lighting replacement project will save about 70,000 kilowatt hours, enough to power 79 typical Seattle homes, and cost $438,000. Seattle City Light supported the project with $136,000 in energy efficiency incentives.

“When you consider the number of bulbs in this theatre and what it takes to simply keep them all in good working order, this project is just good dollars and sense,” stated STG Executive Director Josh LaBelle. “Part of being a good steward of these historic venues, also means being a good environmental citizen, and this lighting project helps us accomplish such in great measure,” he continued.

In 2009, City Light helped to complete the retrofit of the signature neon Paramount vertical sign. With that project, City Light was also able to support the upgrade with utility incentives.

“The Paramount Theater demonstrates how energy efficient lighting can meet the needs of the most demanding professionals and audience members, while lowering operating costs,” Conservation Resources Director Glenn Atwood said. “We are excited to partner with the Paramount in another act in our long-running conservation program, in which helping our customers use electricity more efficiently provides the first-choice energy resource for the future.”

City Light offers numerous incentives for businesses and homeowners to increase their energy efficiency. Learn more about them at http://www.seattle.gov/light/conserve/.
