Mr Shimamura was invited to teach in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, Australia over the last 4 years for LOMNSS 2014 and TWOMNSS 2015 + 2016 + 2017, and has been continually impressed with the passion, enthusiasm, positive attitude and dedication of the attendees to date. Mr Shimamura is continuing to teach in Australia, the curriculum he has developed for practitioners and students to learn the unique skillsets he acquired during his apprenticeship with Master Nagano, and throughout his 20+ years of clinical practice in Japan. Who was Master Nagano?

In post-war Japan, Master Acupuncturist Kiyoshi Nagano began a remarkable and fruitful investigation. Despite being blind, Nagano memorized Chinese canonical literature and developed a unique and ingenious theoretical and clinical approach that incorporated classical concepts and emergent insights from Western medicine.

His ideas and methods did not follow an established group, which brought a certain stigma in Japanese acupuncture circles. Being mentally robust, he was proud of his ‘lone wolf’ status.

Over the next half a century - using his extraordinary palpation and pulse diagnosis skills as a guide - he crafted ingenious acupuncture strategies for all types of conditions.

He also became a mentor to two of the most important Japanese acupuncture teachers of our time: Master Acupuncturist Kiiko Matsumoto and Tsuyoshi Shimamura.

Master Nagano passed away in 2003.

Tsuyoshi Shimamura, L.Ac. (Japan)

Seishiro Hokazono L.Ac. - Interpreter

Born and raised in Japan, and now a citizen of the US, Seishiro graduated from the Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and undertook further studies in Meridian-style Acupuncture and Moxibustion with Aizawa Sensei in Tokyo, Japan from 2006-2007. Seishiro then studied modified KSA and Integrated Synergy Therapeutics under Nakano Sensei in 2008 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. From 2008 onwards Seishiro developed very sound knowledge and skills in Kiiko

Style Acupuncture. Due to his exceptional linguistic skills in Japanese and English and experience with interpreting specific to acupuncture, Seishiro has been selected by Qiology as interpreter to Mr. Shimamura, to assist English speaking students in learning Master Nagano’s Acupuncture techniques, diagnosis and theory through Mr. Shimamura. Seishiro is in full-time practice in Albany, Oregon, and also holds a 1st Degree Black-Belt in Judo.

Tsuyoshi Shimamura obtained licensure as an Acupuncturist and Moxibustionist in Japan in 1995 after completing studies at Meiji Acupuncture and Moxibustion College. Shimamura was fortunate to undertake a live-in apprenticeship with Master Nagano during the final years of Master Nagano’s life, living and working with Master Nagano between 1997 and 2000 as his closest apprentice.

Shimamura not only inherited a vast amount of Nagano’s teachings, techniques, and theories but also gained an important insight into his character. Tsuyoshi Shimamura is a member of the Japan Acupuncturist Association, and has also published articles and DVDs for Ido-No-Nippon. Since 2006, Shimamura has been teaching seminars on the Acupuncture and diagnostic methods he learned during his time with Master Nagano. Shimamura has also taught a variety of hands-on manual techniques to Shiatsu practitioners, physical therapists, Bone-Setters and cosmetic therapists in Japan.

Mr. Shimamura currently develops what he has learned with Master Nagano personally during their time together, and what he has learned from Master Acupuncturist Kiiko Matsumoto, as in his heart there is no replacement for their teachings, and as a result Mr. Shimamura focuses only on teaching openly and passionately to his students, that which he learned directly from Master Nagano and Kiiko Matsumoto, the most inspirational influences in Shimamura’s life.

In recent years, Shimamura has impressed international students with his clarity and depth of understanding, his mindful presence, and his commitment to sharing Master Nagano’s legacy. Tsuyoshi Shimamura runs clinics in Hiroshima and Ooita, Japan, and holds a 1st Degree Black-Belt in Judo.

Mr Shimamura has developed a curriculum for practitioners/students to learn the unique skillsets he acquired during his apprenticeship with Master Nagano. The core curriculum is designed to build the skills of the practitioner/student gradually to a high level of proficiency in the unique diagnostic and treatment methods Mr Shimamura uses in his clinical approach, that allow him to achieve outstanding clinical results.With each successive seminar, the skills of the previous seminars can be built upon, and refined, and the depth of understanding deepened.

Between Phases, it is expected that practitioners/students take what they have learned and apply it diligently in practice, so that they may build upon skills effectively during the next seminar. Practitioners/Students are also encouraged to form study circles with fellow attendees in their area (3-4 per circle), and meet regularly to practice and share what they have been developing to enhance their skills. Practitioners/students will be assessed on their understanding and application of principles, progressively as they proceed with training. The further the progression, the more rigorous the assessment. Please be advised that we have altered some of the Phase 2 & 3 sections of the curriculum.The steps in progression of training are outlined below. The final Phase 2 class is being offered in 2018:

Phase 1:

Introductory 1: 3-day Seminar: Qi (Stomach Qi), Blood (Oketsu: Blood stagnation), Water (Pain Treatment), Discussion of the Tree Model with Post and Pre-natal Qi, Adrenal treatment, Immune treatment, Autonomic nervous system treatment. Teaching diagnostic skills and specialized needle techniques, unique point locations, and foundational Oriental Medicine theory in order to achieve more efficacy in treatment. This seminar teaches the foundations of the core curriculum treating the body to promote movement of Qi to bring the rising heat and Qi downwards, to resolve stagnation of Blood, and to deliver pain relief via constitutional treatment.

Phase 2:

After Basic 1, Phase 2 classes must be attended in the order: Introductory 2, followed by the Musculoskeletal Course. Introductory 2: 3-day Seminar: Review of Introductory 1, Application of Extraordinary channels, Autonomic nervous system treatment (review). Psycho-emotional disorder pattern differentiation, advanced technique of treating Stomach Qi including visceral manipulation and treatment of Stomach Qi via head points. Advanced treatment of descending “heat & Qi rising”. Further strengthening and refining of needle techniques, diagnostics and unique point locations (including Dao Hui and Qian Zheng). Acupuncture treatment with fewest possible points needled to achieve effective results, while understanding the appropriate amount of stimulation for patients in order to prevent over-treatment. Musculoskeletal- Upper Body + Lower Body: 4 day seminar: Diagnostic skills, treatment strategies, and effective treatment of Upper Body: Neck, shoulders, upper back, scapulae, ribs, arms, elbows, hands, and fingers + Lower Body: SI joint, lower back, hips, legs, knees, ankles, feet and toes.The Lower Back Diagnostic Map as an additional diagnostic tool for the whole body. Covering the concept of muscle membrane and its reach, application of knowledge of origin and insertion of muscles of the Upper and Lower Body, function and dysfunction of muscles.Unique “Muscle-Adjustment” Manual Techniques for the Upper and Lower Body.Use of Luo-Yuan Treatment and Horary Treatment.

A Basic Elaboration on Mr Shimamura’s Core Curriculum:

“This curriculum is based on the acupuncture of Nagano Sensei and Kiiko Sensei” -Tsuyoshi Shimamura

Phase 3:Phase 3 classes must be taken in order:Application 1: ½ day Group Skills Assessment + 2 ½ day Seminar:½ day Assessment: 100% Hands-on treatment of fellow attendees for Skills Assessment2 ½ day seminar: 75% hands-on component. Connecting certain muscle groups to organ issues and vice versa (somato-visceral & visceral-somatic connection). Methods of inferring organ issues based on certain movement restrictions or pain using body observation. Whole body movement observation and palpation-based diagnosis for somato-visceral & visceral-somatic conditions. Understanding correct archetypal body posture as a basis of understanding deviations from the norm. Educating your patients with specific exercise methods for specific conditions. Treatment of the Chest. Tips to determine where to start the treatment from. This class includes group assessment in order to evaluate the areas of improvement required in skillsets of attendees related to palpation and needling techniques. Mr Shimamura will also critique and assist attendees with treatments on the seminar days. Treating various patients (fellow attendees on the 2nd day, volunteer patients on the 3rd day).

Application 2: 3-day Seminar: 75% hands-on component: Knowing and understanding the correct posture as a bipedal being vs the correct posture for the needs of a particular individual’s life requirements: Treatment based on this unique understanding as to not disturb the functional aspect of the individual’s unique posture, as opposed to forcing that individual to have the biologically ideal/correct posture. Understanding psycho-somatic/visceral and somato/visceral-psycho presentations, and diagnostics that we can link in with current acupuncture diagnostic tools. The usage and locations of all lectured acupuncture points treating somatic-visceral, visceral-visceral, and psycho-visceral issues. Putting all the previous material together (review of all concepts of past seminars) as a whole treatment system. How to “short cut”/simplify treatments: what presentations warrant skipping basics, enabling shortcut in treatments? Mr Shimamura will provide you with possible difficult patient scenarios that are expected to arise in clinic, so that you will be able to identify these difficulties in treating certain types of patients, thus, not getting lost or confused in the process. Critiquing and approving of certain skill sets to make sure that practitioners have the right skills to treat intuitively without too much “thinking.” Treating various patients (fellow attendees/volunteer patients on the 2nd day, volunteer patients on the 3rd day).Reverse presentation: Why does it take a long time to treat certain patients? Identification/diagnosis, progonosis and treatment of Reverse presentations.

Phase 4:Various unique training opportunities will exist as part of Phase 4, only open to those who have completed all previous Phases. At this stage of development, Certification will be given. Details to be announced at a later date.

Futher developing the skills from previous classes, combined with effective Musculoskeletal Diagnosis and Treatment strategies for the whole body, plus new treatment methods!

To be covered comprehensively in the four-day seminar:

• Introduction of Horary Acupuncture based on Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen Chapters 66-71 & 74. These are the 7 Canons that mention the connection of the 12 Channels to the 12 Sectioned Chinese Zodiac and Clock System. This is a different system from the simple movement of Qi from Lung to Liver. Master Nagano most likely borrowed this idea from Yanagiya Sensei’s articles, and incorporated it into his own style and understanding. Mr Shimamura will elucidate his methods of utilizing these concepts in acupuncture practice.

• Use of Unique “Muscle-Adjustment” Manual Technique to Diagnose and Treat certain imbalances of muscles and joints.

• Covering the concept of Muscle Membrane and its reach, application of knowledge of origin and insertion of muscles of the Upper and Lower Body, function and dysfunction of muscles.

• Musculoskeletal Diagnosis and Treatment strategies for the Upper + Lower Body: Neck, shoulders, upper back, scapulae, ribs, arms, elbows, hands, and fingers + SI joint, lower back, hips, legs, knees, ankles, feet and toes.

• Application of Yuan (Source) Points combined with Luo (Connecting) Points for certain conditions of the Lower Limbs. Utilizing Magnets and Moxibustion as adjunctive methods.

• Usage of the Lower-Back Diagnostic Map. Correlating and comparing with other diagnostic methods to determine the patient’s condition.

• Treatment of the Chest: A unique method that can be used after all basic treatments and Horary Treatment. Touch-up treatment methods to clear up residual pain at the completion of treatments.

• Case study demonstrations of difficult cases with local patients brought in by attendees for Mr Shimamura to treat (Attendees will be contacted prior to attending to organize bringing patients who consent to being treated in demonstration for the learning purpose of attendees).

This seminar is recommended only to practitioners/students who wish to further their development under the training of Mr Shimamura, and have completed the Core Curriculum: Introductory 2 of Phase 2 Class.

Mr Shimamura’s words to Phase 2 attendees:

Viewing demonstration is one thing, but doing the actual treatment is another thing. In these seminars, I hope to lead everyone to become accustomed to performing treatments as I do. I intend to train you until your hands can understand fluently what I teach you. Tactile intelligence is extremely important.

Learning this material should lead to a better technique and an eventual effective outcome. In order to achieve this goal, we will work on angles of palpation and feelings of how we should find the points. In order to gain the results in clinic, and the trust, and smile of your patients, we must achieve this level of palpatory technique.

1. Importance of palpation:Accurate palpatory technique is essential: I will ask you to be more precise on your skill to locate the points in order to be able to detect the change in tissue and movement of acupuncture points.

2. We will focus on anatomy and physiology, as well as Oriental Medicine:Fluency in Oriental Medicine theory is important. In modern times, you must not omit the knowledge of anatomy and physiology. However, none of these disciplines are to be studied for memorization purposes. These disciplines should be directly correlated to what you do, and guide your thought process during treatment. I intend to integrate both medical worlds with various perspectives on treatment approaches.

3. Importance of basic skills:It is hard to apply the more advanced techniques and knowledge without having a strong foundation of very basic skills. I will review skills taught previously, to make sure you understand the material well, then I will offer plenty of material for you to further your technique and skills passed down from Master Nagano in this seminar.

"Te A Te Hari"“Pour passion and heart into your hands.” This unforgettable command is what Master Nagano told me as I started my three-year apprenticeship with him. I always wonder if I am properly executing his command as I needle myself every morning. One of Master Nagano’s patients told me: “Just having a touch of Sensei’s hands makes me feel better. His hands remind me of my mother.” I still remember his warm hands when I first received his handshake. I cannot do the same acupuncture treat-ment like Master Nagano. But, I feel the calling to pass his command to other fellow colleagues. I would like to bring in the passion as I diagnose patients with my hands. I pour my heart into every needle to help alleviate the suffering. If I can transmit this message via how I show my treatment style through seminars, I feel comfortable naming my style: Te A Te Hari. Te A Te means “laying a hand”, “treatment”, and “appropriate preparation or allowance”. Hari = Needle. I believe that actual treatment can start by touching a patient.
