VERAGUA RAINFOREST IN COSTA RICA RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE Veragua Rainforest in Costa Rica recently received the Trip Advisor Certifi cate of Excellence for 2013. Veragua Rainforest Eco-Adventure is a 3,400-acre private mountain reserve bordering the spectacular La Amistad International Park, the largest nature reserve in Central America. Located less than an hour from the cruise port of Puerto Limon, Veragua hosts cruise passengers from leading cruise lines such as Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line. Shore excursion visitors to Veragua experience fi rsthand the natural wonders of Costa Rica’s breathtaking tropical rainforest. Activities at Veragua include gliding through the rainforest on an aerial tram while viewing monkeys and rainforest animals, learning about the rainforest ecosystem at the Frog and Reptile Habitats, experiencing the thrill of the Original Canopy Tour, or journeying into the rainforest on one of several walking trails.

DISNEY CRUISE LINE UNVEILS NEW 2014 ITINERARIES AND PORTS In 2014, Disney Cruise Line will offer new itineraries, including an expanded collection of European cruises highlighting the Greek Isles. Plus, Disney Cruise Line will depart for the fi rst time from homeports in Venice, Italy and San Juan, Puerto Rico. GENERAL TOURS WORLD TRAVELER NOW OFFERS FOUR TOURS TO JAPAN General Tours will offer new tours this year designed to showcase off-the-beaten path regions rarely visited by American visitors in Japan. Designed exclusively for intimate private car touring and congenial groups of only six to 16 guests, these unique, surprisingly affordable journeys feature active discovery and authentic cultural engagement not available to larger groups. Several departures have been planned to include Kyoto’s Gion Festival, the Takayama Spring Festival and Cherry Blossom time in Japan.

ROYAL PRINCESS DEBUTS IN NORTH AMERICA Princess Cruises’ new Royal Princess made her grand North American debut this fall at Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale and is now making seven-day Eastern Caribbean sailings to Princess Cays, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. The fi rst of two new-generation ships for Princess, Royal Princess’ prototype design received rave reviews from passengers sailing on the ship’s summer season. Among the features garnering attention are a dramatic over-water SeaWalk, where passengers can venture 28 feet beyond the edge of the vessel in a glass-bottomed walkway; a water and light show; and a soaring atrium that has become the social center of the ship with its many new eateries and entertainment options.

Royal Princess will sail from Ft. Lauderdale through April 20, 2014. The ship then will cross the Atlantic to offer a summer season of Scandinavia and Russia cruises.

SEAWORLD CELEBRATION: A ‘SEA OF SURPRISES’ In celebration of SeaWorld Park’s 50th celebration, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment will be rolling out a “Sea of Surprises” starting March 21, 2014. SeaWorld parks in San Diego, Orlando and San Antonio will share the excitement throughout the 18-month celebration.

Guests could receive exclusive access to rides or behind-the-scenes experiences, celebration T-shirts or Shamu-themed merchandise, reserved show seating and more.

PERU RISINGBy Dorothy Crouch

Sitting below the equator, on the Pacifi c Ocean, Peru has become one of South

America s̓ most desirable destinations. An ideal coastal location, nestled by Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile, Peru has grown to become South America s̓ perfect mixture of ancient civilizations, colonial history and jetsetter s̓ dream destination. Peru s̓ reputation as a gastronomic paradise has been cemented by accolades such as the World Travel Awards-Edition Central and South America s̓ “Best Culinary Destination” and through hosting Mistura, Latin America s̓ food festival. As South America s̓ third-largest country, Peru s̓ geography is varied and includes electrifying urban fl air in cities such as Lima and naturally beautiful landscapes in agricultural towns such as Arequipa. A capital, buzzing with many exciting activities and rich history, Lima is located in a prime location on Peru s̓ central western coast. The city s̓ colonial history reportedly began in the mid-16th century, though was inhabited by indigenous people for thousands of years. Discovering the historic infl uences of the city is still possible through visits to archaeological sites, such as Pachacamac, a religious area of extreme importance to the region s̓ ancient civilizations. Sitting on cliffs of Costa Verde, overlooking the Pacifi c Ocean, the JW Marriott affords access to shopping, outdoor activities such as paragliding and surfi ng, and the beach below. Contrasting the vibrant and sophisticated beach vibe of Lima, Arequipa boasts a more quaint setting and magnifi cent natural wonders. The cityʼs white-stone buildings are composed of ashlar, a volcanic sillar rock, refl ecting the regionʼs geologic composition. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Arequipa is home to architecture that was infl uenced by Spanish colonial culture, yet sculpted, carved and built by natives. Arequipa is surrounded by snowcapped mountains and volcanoes: Chachani, Pichu Pichu and the giant El Misti.

Located three hours from this fascinating city is Colca Canyon, named for its pre-Incan residents. This canyon, the worldʼs deepest, is one of the Peruvian Andes ̓most fascinating features. While Cusco might be thought of as a city dedicated to archaeological preservation and tourism, it is also home to hotel properties that have introduced luxury to this historical region. The JW Marriott Hotel Cusco is located within the cityʼs center, surrounded by Cuscoʼs most fascinating attractions, such as the Museo de Arte Religioso, Qorikancha and San Agustin Convent. Lying within the Sacred Valley, Urubambaʼs Tambo del Inka sits next to the winding Vilcanota River. The only LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certifi ed hotel in Peru, Tambo del Inka operates in a sustainable manner, thereby preserving the surroundings that comprise this natural wonderland. Luxurious accommodations and environmental awareness aside, this property offers an additional service that has become treasured by guests. As the only hotel in Urubamba to include a private train station for travel to Machu Picchu, Tambo del Inka allows guests to make the journey in comfort.Tourist can fully enjoy traveling to Machu Picchu without the burden of making the journey aboard a crowded tourist train, a trip that might be considered the best hotel amenity in the city. Extraordinary journeys to Peru can be enjoyed equally by solo travelers, independent groups and guided tours. G Adventures offers a few different itineraries to Peru, including a Peru Multisport package that is perfect for those who are satisfi ed only by adrenaline-fueled adventures. Abercrombie & Kent offers luxurious packages for families and solo

travelers. This luxury travel outfi tter reveals the highlights of Peru via intimate cruise vessels, comfortable trains or private jets, depending on the itinerary.

Four hours from Cusco lies Machu Picchu, an ancient citadel that was discovered in the early 20th century. The Quechua people preceded the Inca civilization, yet left this incredible village behind. Machu Picchu, which means “old mountain” in Quechua is a destination that demands at least two days. During the fi rst day visiting Machu Picchu, travelers should explore the ruins, which have been named one of the incredible destinations listed in “1001 Natural Wonders You Must See Before You Die.” While the authors of this guide recognize Machu Picchu as a manmade development, its location within the Cusco cloud forest at the end of the Inca Trail, as well as its varieties of unique fl ora and wildlife, have earned it acceptance onto the list. In addition to the ruins, travelers to Machu Picchu recommend arriving early to scale Huayna Picchu, the popular mountain that overl ooks the citadel. This hike should be reserved for the second day of a Machu Picchu journey to ensure a thorough adventure to this fascinating ancient region.

6 WINTER 2014

UNDER THE CARIBBEAN SUNBy Kimberly Thomson

Summer vacation may seem to be a ways off, but planning is in full swing. The Caribbean is the fi rst place families, couples and groups of friends think of when imagining themselves sailing through carefree waters. A Caribbean cruise marries sand and sun with the pampered elegance of cruise line amenities. Picture this: After hours of swimming with string rays, return to the ship where decadent dining awaits.

The only question is which route to select, as this determines the pace of the trip. The western journey

is more relaxed because the islands are further apart. Having more days at sea between ports allows travelers time to unwind, perhaps indulge in a massage. The eastern itineraries, on the other hand, deposit cruisers in a different port almost every day. Adventure-seekers enjoy this type of schedule because they can pack a lot of experiences into a short time frame.

WESTERN VOYAGE: EASY DOES IT

Cozumel, Mexico The water in Cozumel isn’t just clear. Visibility can reach 100 feet deep, which is comparable to seeing from one end of a basketball court to another, but underwater. On an especially clear day, visibility doubles, bringing into focus soft gorgonian fans and 230 fi sh species, painted in an array of Hi-Liter colors. Paradise Reef provides a chance to spot Cozumel’s illusive Splendid Toad Fish, while San Francisco Reef boasts larger inhabitants like rays and sea turtles. If diving is too much of a commitment (or too advanced for the little ones), Chankanaab National Park reveals equally captivating beauty to beginner snorkelers. A cruise excursion favorite, Chankanaab’s inland coral reef – the only one in the world – houses 60 species of fi sh.

Belize City, Belize Belize lays claim to the greatest concentration of Mayan sites in Central America, and Caracol is the prize

archaeological site. Caracol at one time maintained a population of more than 140,000 people, almost unheard of during the Maya Classic era of AD 250-950. The onsite museum contains artifacts and descriptions of the Maya: their occupations and relationships with neighboring polities. Offshore islands, as close as 12 miles out, offer unparalleled snorkeling. Belize has the largest barrier

reef in the northern hemisphere, spanning 185 miles of the country’s coastline. One

dive site, Blue Hole, is visible from space. Originally a cave that formed

10,000 years ago, Blue Hole is home to the largest midnight parrot fi sh in the world. So slip into the bathwater-warm ocean and lose yourself in the beauty of the underworld.

EASTERN VOYAGE: FULL STEAM AHEAD

St. Martin/St. Maarten This dual-island nation offers a unique

culture, as St. Martin is a collectivity of France and St. Maarten is ruled by the kingdom of the Netherlands. Only a welcome sign separates the two. The Dutch and French cultures mingle with native Caribbean heritage to form an exotic blend. The 37-square-mile island’s landscape is as diverse as its culture, offering mountain ranges, untouched villages, lagoons and pristine beaches. Shopping draws tourists to the eastern side, largely because St. Maarten is the only duty-free island in the Caribbean. Without the burden of sales tax or even a value added tax, prices are 20%-60% lower

than in the U.S. Designer clothes, diamonds, alcohol and even computers are all part of the bargain blitz that fuels shoppers from morning till night.

Puerto Rico Stroll the ballast stone streets of the Colonial City in a culinary and architectural adventure. The Old San Juan Food Tour treats the eye to Spanish and French buildings and delights taste buds with traditional Puerto Rican fare. During a tour that includes tastings at six restaurants and specialty cafes, sip piña coladas infused with local rum and learn to make mofongo, a dish of fried green plantains. Puerto Rico is full of natural beauty as well. El Yunque National Forest is a majestic piece of the island’s eastern countryside. The only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, El Yunque encompasses 28,000 acres and is home to hundreds of smaller species of animals, many of which exist only in Puerto Rico. Walk the beautiful trails and marvel at the giant tree fern or meet a Puerto Rican parrot.

Regardless of whether travelers choose a trip through the east or the west, a Caribbean cruise seamlessly combines activity with relaxation and history with present-day culture – some combination of which appeals to the traveler in everyone.

HAPPINESS AWAITS IN DENMARK

Whatever the actual reasons are, the atmosphere is bright – despite dreary weather half of the year

– and locals are known to have a sunny disposition, often nodding to complete strangers. In Denmark, innovation is a concept with myriad manifestations. Because the Danish are characteristically fulfi lled by their work – a fl exible work environment doesn’t hurt – they travel down roads of exploration and curiosity, likely the impetus behind master carpenter and joiner Ole Kirk Christiansen’s LEGO creation. Christiansen, a native to Billund, Denmark, dreamed up Automatic Binding Bricks, which were the building blocks for modern-day LEGOs. Decades later, the fi rst LEGOLAND was built in Billund and has since grown into the largest tourist attraction outside of Copenhagen, drawing tens of thousands of travelers to Denmark every year. The same creativity manifests itself in food preparation and presentation. A decade ago, Danish cuisine was unheard of outside the country save for bacon and potatoes – not exactly the most inspiring of foods. But in the last 10 years, the focus has shifted to local ingredients beyond meat and potatoes. The result has revolutionized Danish gastronomy. New Nordic Cuisine is ironically named as it emphasizes older techniques: drying, smoking, pickling and curing. Nordic dishes are easily recognizable, as they often include cellared vegetables, unripe fruits and conifers. As if that isn’t enough to distinguish itself, the food is often served with rocks, shells and twigs, artfully tousled with garden scraps such as radish leaves. René Redzepi of Noma, a world-famous restaurant in Copenhagen, is shepherding the global transformation of cooking seasonally and engaging with agriculture – one interpretation of which is bidding goodbye to fresh ingredients once fall arrives. Given this food movement, it stands to reason that Copenhagen would host Northern Europe’s largest food

festival every year. Copenhagen Cooking celebrates seasonal produce and high-quality ingredients throughout the last 10 days of August. On any given day, bikes far outnumber cars in Copenhagen. All of this endorphin-inducing biking must be a contributing factor to the Danish sense

of happiness. The city is built to accommodate bicycles, with more than 390 kilometers of

designated paths. Spurred by a sense of environmental responsibility,

everyone from men in business suits to young girls in stilettos go by bike. Innovation permeates this sector of life as well, and keeps people interested in traveling by bike when they could easily afford cars. Inventions are rooted equally in form and function, a

prime example of which is Danish manufacturer Yakkay’s stylish

fabric-covered helmet. It satisfi es the safety requirements of traditional

helmets, but the fabric covering makes it aesthetically appealing, allowing women to feel

fashionable and safe. As a visitor, biking offers a personal vantage point from which to see the city. Roll past the yellow, orange and sky blue vintage townhouses that line the Nyhavn Canal. Duck inside the nearby Copenhagen Opera House that sits on the water’s edge like a glass ship about to disembark. It’s a lot less likely that a major site or experience will be missed at a slower, two-wheeled pace. And travelers can witness the Danish culture up close and personal, allowing them to interpret for themselves what it is that makes the Danes tick – and tick happily.

CRUISNG THE GEMS OF THE BALTIC Cruising the Baltic Sea is a great way to visit a number of the countries in Northern Europe, including Denmark. Many Baltic cruises begin or end in Copenhagen, so arrive early or stay on after and spend a few days exploring. Enjoy luxurious cruise ship accommodations while watching the coastline sail by. Ports of call may include Amsterdam, Helsinki, London, Stockholm and St. Petersburg, but it is unlikely that all desirable ports can be visited in one trip. Cruisers can explore various itineraries, so they’re sure to hit the majority of their must-see cities. Cruises typically last four to 16 nights, though a few ships offer longer itineraries.

Move over Disneyland. Denmark is the happiest place on Earth. The World Happiness Report found that out of 156 nations, the Danes occupy fi rst place. And the reason is no longer a mystery. The Happiness Research Institute names trust, relative wealth and a decentralized democracy with a high degree of personal freedom to be among the top reasons for the overall feeling of well-being.
