FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to the students who had a great day at the
school swimming carnival yesterday. A big thank you to all of
the parents who came and supported their children on the day
and for doing a great job at following the COVID restrictions.
This was our first year at Granville Swimming Centre and I
would like to give a big thank you to the pool staff for making
us feel welcomed.
I would like to thank all of the staff for ensuring the students
had a great time on the day.
I would especially like to acknowledge the efforts of Ms
Johnston for organising the carnival over the past couple of
months.
Meet The Teacher Mornings
Next week, we will be providing parents with an opportunity to
meet the teachers. With a range of restrictions due to COVID,
we will be holding these information sessions before school
from 8:15am to 8:45am. Information about these sessions will
be detailed in a letter that will be sent home. At the session,
teachers will provide details of class routines, homework,
student expectations and general curriculum information.
Health Care Plans
I would like to thank the parents who have worked with the
school’s office staff to ensure that their child’s health plans are
up to date.
It is important that the school is aware of any medical
conditions to ensure that we can give all of our students the
best of care.
Skoolbag App and Facebook
I have noticed that there are a number of parent groups for
our school on Facebook and this can provide parents with a
great opportunity to connect with other parents. Please be
aware that these groups are not administered by school staff.
The school does have a Facebook page that we use to
celebrate things that have happened at school. If you have
any questions about upcoming events, can I please
recommend that the first point of call is the Skoolbag app
where notes are published. If you have any questions, please
do not hesitate to contact the school.
Congratulations
Aarush Goyal, Aarush Pare and Kaylan Mantara have been
selected to represent the Castle Hill PSSA zone at the Sydney
West Area Trials for cricket and Archa Chavan for tennis. All
four should be very proud of their achievements.

High School Information
All Year 6 students will be receiving a High School
Information Pack in the next week that will include an
Expression of Interest form. This package will have details of
your local High School and will provide parents with an
opportunity to apply for out of area schools if needed.
Please note that your child’s designated local high school, is
determined by your address, and will be indicated on the
form.
This form must be returned to the class teacher (not the
office) by Wednesday 17 March, 2021.
It is very important that the forms are returned before or on
this date as processing of the information begins
immediately.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Focus Area for Weeks 2-4
Our first PBL focus for 2021 is about being responsible at
recess. Students are reminded of this focus in assemblies
and in class, to ensure all students are sitting down at
recess when they are eating, waiting for the teacher to
announce when it is time to place their rubbish in the bin and
head off to play with their friends.
I have already seen how responsible WHPS students have been with this PBL focus. Keep up the fantastic work!

ACTIVITY This activity is always interesting to do with students as it makes them think about their friendships. You might like to ask
your child to write down their friends on the Friend-o-meter and see what their thoughts are. The results can
change over time, so it’s good to see if there is a pattern.
We’ll continue to look at URSTRONG this term in the
newsletter.
Take care

FROM THE CHAPLAIN
Does this friendship
bring me joy?
As we begin a new school year, it might be time for our kids to
take a look at their friendship circle.
Winston Hills Public School has just become a
URSTRONG school because we are committed to helping
students find healthy friendships that makes them happy.
URSTRONG is a whole-school strategy that empowers kids
with friendship skills to create communities of kindness in
schools. URSTRONG gives kids skills, language and self-
confidence to be better friends and develop healthier
relationships. It’s for educators as well as parents. Check out
urstrong.com and click on the PARENTS tab. Parent
membership is free at the moment and there’s a mountain of
resources that can help support you and your child through the
ups and downs of friendships.
Students will learn about the 4 Friendship Facts. Many
of them are surprised to find out that friendships don’t always
have to be perfect. As long as their friends are in the green
zone most of the time (check out the Friend-O-Meter). One of
URSTRONG’s 4 Friendships Facts is
“Friendships change… and that’s okay”.
Sometimes children will hold on so tightly to a friendship that
doesn’t feel good because they’re worried about being alone.
When a friendship is in the unhealthy zone, students are
encouraged to spend less time in that friendship and let it go.
URSTRONG teaches the student to acknowledge the
unhealthy friendship and feel grateful for what that friendship
gave them and then say goodbye.

Borrowing Books
Library borrowing is an important part of school life and all
students have the opportunity to borrow books from the library
each week. All classes from K to 6 have an assigned library
day so that they can borrow books for the week.
The number of books each grade is allowed to borrow is as
below:
K-2 - Two books
3-6 – Three books
Returning Books
We encourage students to enjoy reading their library books, to
take care of them, and to return them the following week.
Books can be returned at any time before the next borrowing
day. If children are away or forget, they can always pop into
the library during the first half of lunch to borrow or return their
books.
Library Bags
Every student needs a library bag in order to borrow books
from the school library.
Lunch Time Library Opening Times
The library is open for students, during the first half of
lunchtime Monday to Friday.

Uniform Shop
Thank you to everyone for their patience as we have set up
and learnt our new online ordering system. While we are still
learning, we have made some improvements, e.g. the shop
now shows on your bank statement as “WHPS Uniform Shop”
instead of “Winston Hills Pub”.
For the foreseeable future we are online only and all orders
are fulfilled during the shops opening hours on a Thursday
from 8.30am - 9.00am. If you would like your student to
purchase any second-hand items, send them in with the cash
during the shops opening hours and we will help them find the
correct size subject to availability. All second-hand items are
only $2 each.

Annual School Swimming Carnival 2021
Our School Swimming Carnival was at Granville Swimming Centre, on Monday 15th February. All the competitors were pumped for their events. Mrs Stewart did a fantastic job of motivating the troops for their events and so did the House Captains who enthusiastically encouraged and supported their House, throughout out the day. Whilst a number of students competed in competitive events, others participated in tabloid sessions. Awesome work, Mrs Faulks and Mr Johnson for their organisation of the tabloids, the students had a blast. Thanks to all students, staff and parents for making the carnival a success. Qualifiers will represent WHPS at the CHPSSA Zone Carnival to be held at Riverstone Swimming Centre, Thursday 4th March. There will be no finals night. Event placing will be based on competitor’s times from event heats. Melissa Johnston
